1 Warnings problem of the 2025 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 08/27/2025

When arriving at the high school parking lot to pick our grandson up from band practice, we experienced sudden unintended acceleration of our vehicle as we attempted to pull into a parking spot. This resulted in a collision with another vehicle that had backed into the parking space in front of us. That driver was inside her vehicle and claimed injuries. As you can imagine we were pulling into the space at a very slow rate of speed when all of a sudden the car lunged forward at a high rate of speed, jumped two parking lot cement barriers and slammed into the rear of her vehicle. The car is equipped with all the latest collision avoidance equipment, but did not stop before hitting the other vehicle . . . And no automatic warning sounds went off that I am aware of. A police report was filed and a tow truck had to be called to tow the vehicle. The vehicle had less than 5,ooo miles on it and had only been owned by us for 4 months (it was new when we purchased it). The accident happened on August 27, 2025 and we did not get our vehicle back from the body shop until Monday, November 17. Not only was our safety at risk, but the other driver and several students in the parking lot at the time. This incident could have been so much worse, or could have ended in a fatality. Volvo did an inspection of the vehicle, but the results were inconclusive and our insurance company paid the claim. As soon as we got our vehicle back we took it to our local Volvo service manager to have him check it over. He has indicated the car is safe to drive . . . But I am very nervous about driving the vehicle now. The cost to repair the vehicle was $14,145. I was not distracted at the time of the accident and I am certain that I did not hit the accelerator pedal. Note: I never received a copy of the accident report, but I believe our insurance company has a copy.

2 Warnings problem of the 2025 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 07/16/2025

I am writing to formally express my significant concerns and dissatisfaction with the recurring software and system issues I have experienced with my Volvo Xc60, purchased on 1st February 2025, approximately four months ago. The vehicle’s vehicle identification number (VIN) is [xxx] . Since taking delivery, I have encountered multiple persistent problems that have severely impacted the vehicle’s functionality and my overall driving experience. These issues include: car sensors: the sensors frequently malfunction, leading to inconvenience and raising serious safety concerns. Heads-up display: the display intermittently shuts off, limiting access to critical driving information. Cruise control: this feature is entirely non-functional, significantly detracting from the driving experience. Sound system: following a recent service visit, the audio system has completely stopped working, with no sound from the music system, indicators, or system alerts. Check engine light: the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) repeatedly illuminates, suggesting potential issues with the engine or related systems, likely triggered by sensor malfunctions. This persistent warning heightens my concerns about the vehicle’s safety and reliability. Despite multiple visits to your service center—exceeding ten occasions—these issues remain unresolved. The service team has typically reset error messages or updated the software, only for the problems to reoccur shortly thereafter. Most recently, the sound system failure emerged post-service, further compounding my frustration with this brand-new vehicle. 4 Warnings problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

Feb. 1, 2024: a short drive on electric during below zero weather, a car wash & a couple 100ft drive into a parking lot. Pulling into a parking space, foot on the brake pedal, ice roared on accelerating the car over a curb, down an embankment & into a 3ft snow drift before I could stop it by pressing the brake pedal with both feet. We stopped 6in from a power pole. If forward crash avoidance system worked, didn't register in the eeprom per the service tech! Feb. 17, 2024, during below zero weather, no electric charge, operating on ice over about 2mi, pulled into a parking space, foot on the brake pedal, ice surged accelerating the car up over a 6" high curb onto sidewalk. Stopped car by depressing the brake pedal with both feet. Car stopped 2in before hitting a brick building. It didn't seem the forward crash avoidance system functioned to stop us. As a 35-year electronic design and repair professional, I have attempted to merge the two situations to try to find similarities. Two things: unexpected ice engine acceleration surge & forward collision sensor not kicking on brakes. Per Volvo tech, Feb. 1, no register in eeprom of forward crash avoidance or ice issues. Second visit Feb. 22 to service will probably yield same. Obviously, this is not normal operation. We have been in two near collisions caused by the car doing things not designed to do.

5 Warnings problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/13/2023

My car continued to move even with the brake pedal pressed, and collision avoidance systems did not turn on. This is very unsafe - a car that doesn’t respond when the driver brakes puts everyone else on the road in danger. The first time this happened was on Sep. 6, 2022. I was driving on the highway when the car in front of me stopped abruptly. I started to brake. The distance between our cars was large enough that I should have been able to stop safely, but my car continued to move. I was unable to stop the vehicle and crashed into the car in front of me. At the time, I thought it was my fault. Although there was damage to my car, luckily no one was injured. (this was resolved, and my car was repaired, with help from shelter insurance. ) on June 13, 2023, I was pulling up to a red light behind another vehicle. I stepped on the brakes and my car jolted to a stop (I had to push the pedal down very hard to get my car to start slowing down). Then my car began to move again, even though I had not released the brake pedal. It was moving at about 1-2 mph. My car got so close to the car in front of us that the parking sensors began to beep. We would have run into the stationary vehicle if I hadn’t put my car in neutral. When the light switched to green I put my car in drive again. At the next intersection the brakes were back to normal, and my car was driving as before. I had my car towed to the local Volvo dealership. After an inspection, I was told they hadn’t found anything wrong. I left my car at the dealership for further investigation, and was given a loaner. I don’t know if there is a connection, but both times this happened, I had been driving on the highway at high speeds (70 mph) for a few hours before trying to brake.

6 Warnings problem of the 2017 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 01/23/2023

I pulled my car out of the garage, I saw I had not taken the trash out and had my foot on brake. The car has an automatic shut off at stops to save gas. It shut off, I jumped out thinking it was "off" as there was no engine sound. The car started back up and started going forward. I attempted to jump in to hit the brakes . . . It kept going and hit side mirror, door, me and then kept going! it never stopped! crushed me half in half out of door. My friend jumped in stopped it from passenger side and then started it up to back it up and remove me. I was taken to trauma with fractured pelvis, broken lumbar, cracked ribs and a concussion and stitches! this is supposed to be one of thee safest cars. My family owns 3! the sensors did not stop the car! period! called Volvo and they blew me off after several drawn out forms. Said the car will not stop in reverse. I was going forward! I paid for the black box to be downloaded and it shows no collision recorded but I need two new doors its so bad! it has been since first week of Feb that I have been rehabilitating and several of my doctors have asked why this was not a case with a lawyer? so far most do not want to fight Volvo I guess. I need help with this. I have proof it did not stop or even show collision from sensors. Thank you kimberly bradshaw.

7 Warnings problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 11/11/2022

The vehicle is basically new and I have only had it a few months. It has already been with the dealer three times because of technical/computer/infotainment issues. The dealer had the vehicle for about a week on each occasion. Today, I started to break so I could turn the car around and park it in the parking lot. I was moving very slowly, as you would expect in such a case. However, the car didn't stop but instead lurched forward in full throttle causing me to crash into a breezeblock wall. The automatic warning system did not sound and the crash detection system never engaged. I haven't been in an accident for 30 years and was not distracted when this happened. If the vehicle hadn't already had issues, I would accept user error as the problem, however in light of the car's history, I have doubts.

8 Warnings problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 07/24/2022

The car is only a few months old with less than 10k miles. After parking the car for about 2 hrs, came back and the battery was completely dead. This left me and my family stranded unexpectedly. After jumping the car, a warning displayed "stop safely, 12 v battery critical charging fault". I decided to try to make the short drive home as I was stranded with my family otherwise, the vehicle was in a limp home "turtle mode" which was not safe. The acceleration was surging unexpectedly and without warning. I realize that there was a warning not to drive, however I didn't have a lot of good options given the electrical failure. Also, in thinking back, there was a warning sometime in the last month regarding collision detection that needed to be fixed, but warning went away. In researching this issue online, seems that there are other complaints similar in nature (11472450, 11469166).

9 Warnings problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 06/09/2022

Continuous problems associated with the computer of the car that are affecting its ability to drive safely. While in reverse and in motion, the car's camera will often, an unpredictably, shut off. Additionally, the car's forward collision warning system will initiate when there are no cars in front of; rather, it sometimes engages when oncoming traffic going the opposite direction. Lastly, the car lost all power while on the highway due to a "battery error". It required a redownload of software; however, these other safety problems persist.

10 Warnings problem of the 2021 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 04/18/2022

The car started to move and accelerate with brake pressed. Accident prevention system did not activate itself. It did not display any warnings as it typically do during parking and being close to other cars. The car caused an accident with mild injuries to the driver of the other car, but could have hit a pedestrian or go to the intersection and involved with an accident with a car moving perpendicularly at a higher speed. I am waiting for an investigator from Volvo and travelers insurance. Prior to the accident the electronic display of the car started to malfunction. I have a video of the whole accident , but it is in mp4 format and thus I could not upload it. The dashboard camera's microphone picked some electromagnetic interference that increased as we got closer to the accident. Description of the accident: we pulled to a red light behind another car. After not moving for a few seconds, the car started to move on its own, accelerating and hitting the car in the front, continuing to move forward. I was able to put the shifter into the park, stopping it. The road conditions were good. Roads were dry. The sky were cloudy overhead. The vehicle is not drivable ( radiator leak ). The car behaved usually before the accident, except for some reason, for the first time, all the displays dimmed significantly ( it was hard to see anything, and I could not increase brightness ). The screens went back to normal brightness right before the accident. Also, the dashboard camera that recorded the incident, for some reason, picked up audio evidence of electromagnetic interference which was increasing as we were getting closer to the intersection.

11 Warnings problem of the 2022 Volvo XC60

Failure Date: 02/07/2022

While driving on the inside lane next to the median of a 4-lane road and without warning or any other vehicles in my vicinity, any debris or objects in the road, and while I was maintaining the vehicle in my lane, the car swerved to the right. It felt as though someone in the passenger seat (I was alone) grabbed the steering wheel and forcefully yanked it to the right. At this time the words collision avoidance assistance or something similar appeared on the dashboard screen. Thankfully there was not a vehicle in the lane to my right and I was able to correct the vehicle back into the appropriate lane. I turned left at the next opening in the median, pulled into a vacant parking lot, and called the Volvo service department. I described what happened to the woman taking my information and made arrangements to leave the car that evening for it to be repaired the following morning. I missed a voicemail from the technician on February 8th stating that the car was inspected and test driven and the issues reported could not be duplicated but that the software had been updated. Several phone calls occurred between myself and the dealer and it was established that the problems reported (this one as well as the ones described in a previous report regarding rear auto braking intervention) could not be duplicated. Had a vehicle been to the right of me, had I been in the right lane and a person been on the sidewalk, had I been in a neighborhood in which a child was riding a bike or a parent was pushing a child in a stroller, the results could have been tragic. There was no warning prior to the swerve and the words on the dashboard.
