1 Equipment problem of the 2010 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 10/01/2022

The windscreen seal has failed. Water leaking into the overhead lighting fixture and main cabin. This will ruin the car, and shouldn't happen to any car. The windscreen, when properly attached to the body, contributes to the structural integrity and crashworthiness of the vehicle. If the screen is only partly bonded, any stress could detach it and the upper part of the body would suffer reduced strength integrity. I can push the windscreen out with my hand.

3 Equipment problem of the 2006 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 04/12/2021

Original keyfob erased itself after battery was disconnected for two weeks while replacing a failed engine. I worked with visteon automotive systems as an electrical engineer, manufacturing their remote keyless entry systems. I know very well that the keyfob should be programmed in non-volatile memory chips. Volvo does not seem to be doing that. This could be a public hazard issue when having to jump-start such a vehicle to get away from a natural disaster. The car may not start until you tow it to Volvo to re-program it. In my case, courtesy Volvo of scottsdale, arizona sent me a bill for 10 hours of labor for keyfob re-programming. Ata rate of $68/hour. Visteon's programming procedure takes minutes. Volvo's takes many hours. This is another hazard issue in itself.

5 Equipment problem of the 2005 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 11/20/2018

My check engine light flashed while driving on Tuesday November 20th at about 4:45pm. I was nearest my local mechanic shop (eldorado automotive) and the tech plugged in the computer gadget that reads what is happening and told me a housing under the hood needed to be removed to investigate further. I took the car in the next morning and found out the my timing belt was about 1/2 shredded and ready to break at any moment. I was told I couldn't drive it and that the repairs would not be completed until Tuesday November 27 following the thanksgiving holiday. I have a 2005 wagon and the timing belt was replaced by Volvo at 125k. The car now has 165k miles. I was very lucky that I did not have a catastrophic failure and a ruined engine. It was just coincidence that this unrelated issue required a more thorough investigation of the housing where the timing belt is. Timing belts are not warrantied by the Volvo 2015 lifetime warranty plan (no surprise there) but an average belt lasts upwards of 100k miles and is recommended to be replaced at/near that time. I have all documents showing when the belt was replaced and yet Volvo is not standing behind this product. I don't see any grey area here. This could in no way be something that was done by me. It looks as though the local Volvo dealer either did not install the belt at 125k or it was clearly a faulty unit. I submitted a claim to Volvo corporate for reimbursement and was denied. I have requested a written accounting of why the claim was denied. I have been unable to speak with anyone other than a customer service rep who has zero authority to do anything. I have also requested names of the persons in management who made the decision. Feels like a huge safety risk. Thanks in advance for your help.

6 Equipment problem of the 2016 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 03/12/2018

Owner on interstate at posted speed (65) heard explosive sound of the sunroof exploding. No other cars were ahead or alongside, and no evidence of a thrown or dropped object was apparent at that time or afterward. Fortunately the sunshade shielded her from most of the broken glass. Dealer called it an act of god and would not honor a warranty claim for the damage estimated at over $1,100. Insurance company is covering all costs, including rental car, until repairs are completed.

9 Equipment problem of the 2012 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 03/14/2017

Recently, my husband's Volvo Xc70 began leaking water. We took it to overland park Volvo for a diagnostic check. They state the windshield seal has broken and that is why it is leaking water. It is a factory installed windshield. They stated it is not covered under warranty and that a glass repair company would need to fix it. So, we took if to safelite. Although out insurance is covering replacing the windshield, because they cannot simply reseal it, safelite states they do not understand why Volvo didn't cover it under their warranty due to defective installation. In addition, the service advisor at the Volvo dealership advised us and safelite that the seals routinely break on Volvos and cause water to leak in the vehicle. There is no reason why the seal should not last the lifetime of the windshield or lifespan of the vehicle, because there are products on the market that guarantee this will not happen. While we are fortunate to have a $0 glass deductible, other Volvo customers that do not have this deductible will have to pay out-of-pocket to repair Volvo's defective workmanship. In addition, water leaking into a vehicle can cause all types of corrosive damage. In our vehicle alone, the water leaked all over the floorboard, all over the leather seats, all of the gear shifting mechanism, etc. If the water were to go into the gear shifting mechanism, it could cost thousands of dollars in damages. Same goes for components that are located under the floor board. It could also pose as a safety hazard on the highway if the seal is broken or if the vehicle mechanically fails due to corrosive parts.

10 Equipment problem of the 2015 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 12/07/2016

Factory installed hitch almost failed. After 16,000 miles of towing a 21 foot travel trailer, the hitch appeared to have excessive movement. When inspected by a mechanic in branson missouri, it was found that 2 of 4 nuts had fallen off and the remaining 2 were significantly loose. Had they fallen off too, a catastrophic failure would have occurred, with the hitch falling off, along with the rear bumper and a portion of the exhaust system. The trailer could have dropped off at highway speeds, causing a serious accident. Please consider a recall to force an inspection of all factory installed hitches on Volvo Xc70, year 2015. 5.

11 Equipment problem of the 2004 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 08/26/2016

I have had the same failure 3 times with this car. Started car up after it was sitting in parking lot on a very hot day. Within 1-2 miles started experiencing inability to roll windows up or down, car started losing power and instrument control panel went blank. I was able to get the car safety off the road. It would not start until the next morning. It has been towed twice. The last time to a Volvo dealer who could not replicate the failure; no codes were stored or found. The car is back to running great. . . Until the next time it dies.

12 Equipment problem of the 2012 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

The seal for the windshield has failed along the top passenger side. From the inside of the vehicle, one can push the windshield enough to see a gap. Water enters when raining; I believe this is also a safety issue is the seal completely fails. It started at about 55 months after delivery and 24,000 miles.

13 Equipment problem of the 2004 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 07/03/2015

I was driving along the highway and suddenly my car just quit running. . . In the middle of a busy highway. . . I didn't know what to do. . . 2 nice men pushed me over into the turn lane to be out of the road. . . My windows worked, lights and so I knew it wasn't the battery. . . It just wouldn't start. . . . Actually this had happened a couple of weeks before, however, after letting it sit about 5 min. It started up and I was able to get home. . . I thought maybe it overheated but none of the warnings went on. . . So I ignored it and wish I wouldn't have as we had to leave my car in a vacant lot off the highway for two days as it was the 4th of July holiday and no one was working. . . We went back to check to see it on July 5, and it started up. . . As I was driving home (July 5)Sunday. . . It quit again at a stop sign where I had no place to turn off. . . Of course, the steering locked when the car stopped. . . It was scary. . . I then waited for about 5 min. And it turned over and started again. . . I drove fast to get home (about 4-5 miles) and made it home. . . So relieved as it is very scary to be stuck in the middle of a busy highway and road. Luckily my husband was following me so I wasn't alone. . . I am over 65. . . I like my car but can't be burdened with a problem like this. . .

15 Equipment problem of the 2005 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 12/10/2013

My wife's 2005 Volvo Xc70 problem is that periodically when you shut off the car and attempt to remove the key you can't. The car makes a noise like it continues to run for several minute's and sometimes you can then remove the key. Unfortunately this problem is happening more frequently.

16 Equipment problem of the 2005 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 10/04/2013

When attempting to latch our child's car seat in rear facing position to the car's latch system anchors, one of the latch anchors broke off completely from the car. We retrieved the broken off anchor piece and it had broken off completely from the car at the solder points.

17 Equipment problem of the 2003 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 04/29/2013

I was driving on the highway when suddenly my gas guage dropped below empty and all my guages stopped working including the clock, blinkers, speedometer and the digital information computer panel that indicates how many miles left to a gallon, etc. This was quite dangerous as I could no longer see the speed of travel, how much gas I had left, the time nor could I use my blinkers to indicate lane changes. There was no warning or indication that the speedometer panel would just die out!.

18 Equipment problem of the 2007 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 05/11/2012

When driving through puddles of water, slush or snow, the exhaust may cool down fast enough to change shape and touch the propeller shaft, causing a high pitched squealing noise. This noise will be noticed by the driver for only a short time; once the exhaust temperature equalizes the noise will disappear. This creates a high-pitched, siren like noise, which can scare the driver causing his/her to swerve or lose control of the vehicle. The is a design defect recognized by Volvo with repair kit available pn# 30742265. As this is a design defect and a serious safety issue, this should be recalled by Volvo and not a $250. 00 repair by the customer.
