1 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 09/17/2025

I own a 2004 Volvo Xc70 that is experiencing the same fuel pump defect described in recall r220 / NHTSA campaign 09v483000 (fuel pump leak). My vehicle exhibits fuel system problems consistent with the recall description. However, my VIN is not included in the current recall population. When I contacted Volvo, I was told my case (id #250827-000998) was escalated to corporate, but I was later informed that no goodwill assistance would be provided because my VIN is not covered. I specifically requested written confirmation of this determination. This defect poses a safety risk that aligns with the existing recall, and I believe additional vehicles outside the current VIN range may be affected. I am requesting that NHTSA review whether the recall should be expanded to include vehicles like mine.

2 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 04/17/2025

My car kept getting a light for its coolant levels despite me filling it with proper coolant-I noticed a leak of coolant on the ground & upon getting it inspected from an independent service center, they told me the issue was my radiator so we got the part to fix it and a week later fixed the radiator and I didn’t get the light for coolant again. Although the independent service center told me that I actually had a fuel leakage due to my pump and described the issues I’ve been having with my car for a few months as signs to what problems this is causing, this meaning a funky fuel smell, my car struggling to fully turn on-needing multiple tries to actually fully turn on etc. This puts my safety at risk because fuel leakage is extremely dangerous for multiple reasons. Not inspected by manufacturer police or insurance reps. Other than the coolant light issue and the noticed continued leak after the coolant leakage was fixed. After looking into this issue online I found a recall notice from Volvo and called them and they claimed my car wasn’t on this recall notice but my year and model is indeed listed and since im having the same problem as the recall listed its concerning me.

9 Other Fuel System problem of the 2007 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 01/31/2019

Started my car in the morning and it sounded normal (it had driven perfectly normal the day before). When I tried to back out of the driveway, it had no power in reverse and barely crept onto the road. When I put it into drive, it had no power either-only crawled very slowly. When I put it into manual drive, it went normally. Back into automatic and it was creeping again. Haven't taken it to a garage yet because I don't trust it on the road now.

14 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 12/04/2016

I purchased this vehicle from a used car lot on Saturday, two days ago. Last night I was hammered by the presence of a nauseatingly intense fuel smell, both inside and out of the vehicle. It doesn't matter if the car has been sitting for hours or if I've been driving it, the smell is equally intense and I have to say that, I am frightened for my safety. I have no recourse with the car lot, "as is" seems to cover selling me a death trap. Now I find out that there is a recall on the exact make and model of my vehicle but somehow Volvo has gotten away with not covering the known issue in all but a few states. Is it going to require a firey death of a family before this is addressed?? there are posts all over the internet of other people facing the same prospect. I cannot afford a new vehicle, now that I have bought this one. I have no choice but to drive the possible means of my destruction. This needs to be addressed!!! why have they not been held accountable? why are only certain states included in the recall??.

15 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

I have a copy of recall 220nhtsa#09v483 for a 2004 Volvo Xc70. The reason being fuel smell and/or fuel seepage. We have been smelling fuel for several months and on 7/29/17 I noticed a couple of drops of fuel hit the pavement while looking at the car. I have called Volvo twice concerning this matter and I have also called NHTSA (reference number 1122416) and have been advised that my VIN number does not match the recall, even though it's the same year make and model and is exhibiting the very same symptoms included in the recall. I'm extremely concerned about the safety of my vehicle I. E. Fuel ignition and I don't understand why I am responsible to pay for the necessary repair when my vehicle is clearly included in the recall. I would really appreciate your help in rectifying this safety issue. Thank you, ralph e. Sparks.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2001 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 01/25/2013

This 2001 Volvo Xc70 has never failed to start until this occurrence when attempted to start it chugged horribly & engine failure & engine system service urgent code appeared the car died & repeated attempts to star it failed diagnosis reveals a non-service listed issue as we have always had this car properly serviced promptly as needed. The issue is a "throttle body failure". According to the Volvo service shop this will cost me $800 to $1000 to fix!! last January I had to purchase a wire harness for this car that was $1400!! I have read many complaints on this throttle body issue and wish to add my complaint for this as well as the wire harness I paid so much for last year. For a car that costs this much and more than 50% more to maintenance than any other vehicle I have owned in 40yrs these kinds of failures should not be absorbed by the consumer Volvo should offer some kind of compensation to help properly replace these kinds of faulty systems and bear at least 1/2 the cost.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

My 2008 Volvo Xc70 spontaneously accelerated as I prepared to park. This happened on two occasions so far, and I am frightened to get behind the wheel again. The experience in both cases was almost identical. The car lurched forward suddenly as I slowed the car to park it. In both cases, my foot was depressed firmly on the brake. The car only accelerated to a few miles per hour, but both times the car stopped only once it collided: the first time with a fence, and the second time with a porch. The brake was seemingly useless. A field engineer inspected our car after the second crash but concluded that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. My research online has revealed that sudden acceleration is an issue that Volvo did struggle with in many of their european models; however, according to Volvo, it was likely related to the fact that they ran on diesel fuel. I have found acceleration issues like mine reported with unleaded fuel engines in the us, but never with a 2008 Xc70. Volvo has yet to make reparations and we have been without a car for a month.

24 Other Fuel System problem of the 2001 Volvo XC70

Failure Date: 02/10/2004

Engine failed on 2001 Volvo v70 xc on trip to north carolina. Subsequently, it restarted, operating under "reduced power". I brought the car to a Volvo dealer in myrtle beach who diagnosed the problem as a throttle module failure and repaired it at a cost of $656. 00. The car had 61,685 miles (beyond the 50,000 mile warranty) and was purchased on 9/9/2000. It is my understanding that there have been widespread failures of this component and that there are various actions in process that might result in recall. I would like to add my problem to the list.
