1 Body problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/21/2025

Spontaneously the left back side door has failed to close on several occasions. It happened first while parked in the driveway and I had to use my body to get it shut. I went to have it checked out at the Volvo dealer and when I described it they told me several people had been in for service with the same issue. They told me one lady had it on 2 doors and another realized her door was open when it flung open mid-drive. They told me the car was just cold and that I needed to make sure the handle was flush with the door when trying to close it. The next day, I picked up my dry cleaning and hung it by that door and drove away. I wasn’t aware it failed to latch yet again and only realized it when it flung open while I was driving on the road. This is the same door next to my son’s car seat which is terrifying to think about. I ensured the handle was flush and it still wouldn’t close until I hip checked it shut 3 times. Without a clear cause or reasonable solution (it is not reasonable to expect this just because it’s cold out), it is imperative that Volvo address this on behalf of the safety of its customers.

2 Body problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/14/2024

My 2018 Volvo Xc90 had repeated water leakage from the panoramic sunroof. In most cases, when the vehicle is parked flat or the front is at a slight angle, water leaks in and collects in the cargo area. It collects into a plastic compartment over the battery located on the right side of the cargo area and/or on top of the rear cargo mat. When the vehicle is moving and it is raining, water leaks in from the rearview mirror, making the entire dash, screen, shifter and both driver and passenger wet. The rain also comes in from the rear right side of the second row making the entire seat or any passenger sitting there wet. Volvo is not acknowledging this defect nor are there any solutions in place. This is extremely concerning.

3 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 08/12/2024

I am filing a safety complaint regarding a failed rear door latch actuator in my 2016 Volvo Xc90. This is a known issue among Volvo owners, yet there appears to be no recall or corrective action. The defect causes the door latch actuator to seize, rendering the affected rear door completely inoperable from both the inside and outside. This means passengers seated in the rear are unable to open the door to exit the vehicle. This is an extremely dangerous and potentially life-threatening hazard. In the event of an emergency—such as a fire, collision, or submersion—rear seat passengers would be trapped inside the vehicle with no way to escape. This failure compromises basic vehicle safety standards, as all doors should be fully functional to allow for emergency egress. I strongly urge the NHTSA to investigate this recurring defect in Volvo vehicles and require Volvo to address it promptly before it results in serious injury or death.

4 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/09/2024

The exterior door handle stopped being able to open from the outside. This poses a serious safety risk; as well as an overall inconvenience for the driver. To get inside the vehicle, one must crawl through the passenger side to open the driver's side door from the inside.

5 Body problem of the 2019 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/15/2024

Rear passenger door won’t open. We had freezing temps in colorado, when I tried to open the rear door to get my 2 month old out of the car the door would not open. Apparently this is a known problem for this vehicle the rear door motors spontaneously stop working.

6 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

In cold weather, doors will not close back once opened. It just bounces back at you. Thought door was closed a few times and it flew open on highway when exiting. My niece was in the back seat. How is this not recalled with multiple complaints on the Volvo forum?.

7 Body problem of the 2023 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/29/2023

On April 29th 2023 while washing my Volvo Xc90 I opened the trunk to clean out the crevasses around the car. As I continued to wipe down/dry the vehicle I placed my hand at the top of the trunk opening and moved my way downwards to wipe the bumper and side of car. Unfortunately, the handsfree tailgate feature activated and the trunk began to close on my hand. Due to my hand being so close to the the spring and the speed in which the trunk door closed I was unable to move my hand fast enough. My middle, index and pinky finger were all crushed inside of the car trunk. No one was able to render aid to me for several minutes. I was able to contort my body enough to push the trunk button and unlock it but the gate itself would not lift. I even in a state of panic tried to kick under the car to initiate the lift, I tried lifting as best I could to get relief off of my hands. Finally about 5 minutes later a passerby came and rendered aid to me and he had to manually lift the trunk up to free my fingers. The experience has been traumatic and I am taking all necessary steps via the Volvo dealership and Volvo to have this matter checked out and resolved. The car has no sensors around the trunk with the exception of something blocking it from closing completely. Also, if you are not carefully and are leaning into the trunk and trip the handsfree tailgate sensor it can close on you if you are leaning into the trunk - this is an issue I saw with my xc60 (2021) that clearly was not resolved. I did go to the er and wound up with thankfully a bruised hand/tendons but no broken bones but I will need to follow up with a hand surgeon to ensure I do not have tendon/nerve damage.

8 Body problem of the 2004 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/07/2023

The rear right door cannot be open from inside the car. It opens fine from outside. I am aware there is a child safety lock, but in this case the problem is somewhere else. Regardless of the child safety lock position, the door cannot be open. This is a hazard, because in case oof an accident the passenger will e trapped inside the car.

9 Body problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/29/2023

The secondary hood latch release cable is not functioning, preventing the hood from opening. Thousands of owners complaining about that. There is a Volvo service bulletin action but they are pretending to charge for that. Quality bulletin service action: s89651 what can I do?.

10 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/15/2023

Rear doors will fail to latch shut in cold weather. Repeated closings of the door (slammed or gentle) fails to latch shut for up to 10 minutes or more. On last occasion door appeared to be shut, but while driving door came open (almost hitting 2 children waiting for school bus). TSB exists for this problem but some claim problem to persist after repair. Do not feel safe driving the car anymore for fear of a repeat incident of door coming open, especially while moving at speed with passengers in the back.

11 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

The door locks freeze shut in the winter. You cannot open the affected door(s). This is a widespread, serious safety issue and Volvo has done nothing about it. A passenger could die if unable to exit the vehicle. Note that both of my rear passenger door locks - not just the door seals, the locks - have done this repeatedly during my ownership. The vehicle is kept out of the elements in a garage.

12 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/11/2023

The 2017 Volvo Xc90 hybrid regularly experiences these two issues when it is below freezing in montana: 1) doors do not catch in the latch so they do not close and/or will fly open when turning. This occurs every time the temperature is below zero. 2) when below zero temperature occurs,.

13 Body problem of the 2018 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/28/2022

The rear doors can inadvertently open in cold when driving down the road without warning. This has happened on a few occasions, even when the dash lights are showing the doors are closed and locked.

14 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/24/2022

When temperatures drop below freezing, the rear door latches will not latch closed. Our children have to hang onto the doors to keep them from swinging open on corners while they also try not to fall out of the vehicle. Dealer says this is a common problem on this model, and is known to Volvo. They’ve attempted to regrease, and advised that the technical service bulletin provided by Volvo does not fix the issue (attempting to reseal window above latch to keep from water intrusion/freezing).

15 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/01/2022

The contact owns a 2016 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that water was entering the vehicle through the sunroof. There was an abnormal odor of mold inside the vehicle. The carpet was not wet. There was an abnormal swishing sound detected inside the vehicle. After it rained, the contact noticed that the passenger side front floorboard had an accumulation of water a quarter inch deep. The contact noticed the water was leaking on the airbag from the exterior a-pillar. The contact moved the headliner, and the rubber boot was intact. The call/sos warning light was illuminated. The contact called the local dealer, who informed about diagnostic testing and scheduled an appointment. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

16 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/01/2022

Rear passenger doors would get locked stuck, and can not get unlocked from inside or outside. This issue would remain even after locking/unlocking car multiple times or enabling/disabling child lock multiple times. Dealer suggested this is common issue in this model of the car, and needs an expensive repair of the latch mechanism. This is a safety hazard as this would would trap the passengers inside the car in case of accident or any other emergency. Please look in to this matter, this should not be happening in a relatively new(5 years), low mileage, always garaged car like Volvo.

17 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/16/2022

Same issue as complaint #11416043. Leak in sunroof has caused several electrical issues with the car. I had noticed occasional drips from the rear view mirror but had no idea that water was pooling under the spare tire in the trunk where several electrical components are located. When I originally brought it to the dealer (when I noticed the occasional drips) they said I needed to replace a major part of the sunroof which would have cost around $2,000. They did not mention that the water could/would reach the under carriage (not sure if that is the correct term) and could cause major electrical issues. I've since noticed that many others with this vehicle have had issues with the sunroof. I also had multiple times when my battery had to be replaced in the rear of the car when it should have been fine (was relatively new) which looking back could have been a result of the sunroof leak.

18 Body problem of the 2019 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 05/07/2022

The rear right passenger door is stuck in a locked state. It's not possible to open that door from the interior or the exterior. Locking and unlocking the doors does not solve the problem. Activating and deactivating the child lock system does not solve the problem either. Turning the engine on and off does not solve the problem. This is extremely unsafe in case of a collision where the passenger needs to be evacuated from the car with no access to the other side of the vehicle. The car has not been inspected by anybody, yet. I'll take the vehicle to the dealership for repair. The door has been like this for a several days now, as of 05/11/2022. There were no signs or other symptoms prior to this problem. There are no signs or messages about this malfunction. Upon looking online on some Volvo owners forums, this problem has occurred to more people before on different models as well. To be clear, this is not a case of the door being stuck due to low temperatures. It has been well above the 40's in the last week at my location in south county, rhode island.

19 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/10/2022

In freezing weather conditions the rear door latches become inoperable. They close fully, but do not latch. My wife was backing out of the driveway this morning an a door opened next to my son. This is unacceptable and Volvo has not responded in an acceptable manner. I was told to bring it in for service. . . . It has only 3 functioning doors at the moment!.

20 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/11/2021

Door lock unable to open. Door is unlocked and the outside and inside fail to open the door. Door lock actuator is jammed.

21 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 11/12/2021

Rear door lock failed with the first symptom of not being able to open the door. Once door was opened the door failed to close/latch. I think this is a safety concern because it would be impossible to get at the rear seat occupant in the event of a crash/heath issue. Then once the door finally opened it failed to latch which made it dangerous to drive the car at all because the door would fling open.

22 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/19/2021

When driving my Volvo after it has rained and I begin to break, while on a road with a minimal decline, rain water pours into the cabin. I was told by Volvo service technicians the water is not able to channel through the sunroof channels correctly due to corrosion or clogging in the drainage tubes/sunroof tray assembly. The water pours into the cabin near the intellisafe/rearview mirror area. This event creates a distraction to the driver especially if breaking while on a right hand curve as the water pours out towards the drivers field of vision. For fear of water damaging any electrical safety components, or the integrity of the interior materials I pull over to dry these components. This event occurs when ever it rains.

23 Body problem of the 2020 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/18/2021

The spoiler cover over the third brake light came off on I-95 in the middle of the freeway for unknown reasons.

24 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 03/02/2021

My passenger rear door handle broke internally where it could not be opened from the inside or the outside of the vehicle. Both rear door handles failed and after driving around with my kids having to go in and out of the car through the front I finally received a loaner for 5 weeks until the parts were available to repair the doors. It appears the front driver and front passenger handle may fail. It is very scary to have your kids in a car and not be able to open the door from the inside or the outside. I looked online and there were lots of recent accounts of Xc90 and xc60s having this issue in europe and America. The dealership said it wasn't covered under the warranty. I ended up paying for the labor and Volvo corporate paid for the $900 part inside the door.

25 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/11/2021

Rear left door spontaneously unlatched and opened while driving with 6-year-old daughter in adjacent seat. Door will subsequently not latch.

26 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/02/2020

For 5 months now, there has been leaking from the rear side of the intellisafe module located by the middle top of the windshield. I have taken the care to the dealership in multiple locations, they have not found the root cause. I have paid for multiple replacements of the rubber trim and cleaning of interior parts. The water leaks directly over the head unit, and I fear that might cause damage such as a electrical fire or replacement of parts that might become very costly. It happens while still in park and while driving.

27 Body problem of the 2006 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

Water leaking from an unknown place gathering in passenger side floor ! causing many electrical problems! vehicle was in idol and cut off will not restart leaving my young daughter and I stranded! while investigating and removing carpet came to realize they were 30 gallons of water under carpet!! looking into it more online noticed many many many others have expressed this same problem! why is not an important issue to Volvo to want to fix this problem?? why wasn't this problem issued for recall???? does son have to die of physically harmed for their to be a recall for this ongoing problem.

28 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 12/30/2019

Vehicle experiencing sun roof leakages during rain or snow. This makes driving dangerous when it is raining or snowing. Defects due to poor sunroof design and components causing water to enter vehicle when raining or snowing. Discussions panels on line identifies other owners experiencing this problem with no concrete solutions as most are trials and errors.

29 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/06/2019

The contact owns a 2016 Volvo Xc90. Each time the contact attempted to fuel the vehicle, the fuel tank door did not open. The contact attempted to open the fuel tank door with the key fob and manually. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,000.

30 Body problem of the 2016 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

Rear doors on the 2016 Xc90 can become unable to close/latch under certain circumstances. If the weather is extremely cold and water has made it into the rubber door seals due to either melting snow or rain, the water can freeze preventing the door from closing enough to latch. This can leave the driver and their passenger stranded on the side of the road or at a remote location and unable to drive their vehicle until the passengers are able to remedy the issue by either melting the ice or removing the ice from the rubber door seals. Note: the ice expanding doesn't cause the doors to open on its own, but if ice is built up in the rubber door seals, once the door is opened (whether the vehicle is moving or stationary), the doors may not close again due to the expanded rubber door seals with ice built up inside.

31 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 09/23/2018

While driving with two young children in car, Volvo hood started to smoke. No warning lights or signals went off. We pulled over, turned engine off, removed kids from the car, and within a few minutes, the entire hood of the car was in flames. The car was completely destroyed, even though firefighters extinguished the fire. We have no information as to the cause of the fire - engine, electrical, etc - but the car only had 18,000 miles on it. Volvo had already replaced the rotors twice in two years - highly unusual - but otherwise we had no reason to suspect a problem. We were very lucky we were on city streets and not on the highway where it would have been difficult to impossible to pull over.

32 Body problem of the 2010 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 07/06/2018

Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Volvo Xc90. The contact stated that the dasboard had deteriorated to the point that it was structurally unsound with if buckling in the area of the front passenger air bag components so the contact was uncertain if the failure may affect other components in the area of the dashboard. The dealer Volvo escondido 1938 auto park way, escondido, CA 92029 was notified, had not provided a diagnosis as to what was causing the failure and had only indicated that extreme heat in the area of the dashboard caused the failure. The vehicle was not repaired yet. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was not available. Dyd.

33 Body problem of the 2005 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 06/28/2018

Passenger door intermittently swings open while driving, even while locked. Faulty latch.

34 Body problem of the 2017 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/23/2018

New vehicle (less than 19000 miles) - vehicle was stationary - in a parking lot, ignition off. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes later, fire ignited in engine bay, rapidly spreading to the whole car. . . Entire care burned to shell.

35 Body problem of the 2013 Volvo XC90

Failure Date: 01/15/2018

I was driving down an old highway at 45mph. The driver's door opened while in motion while the door was closed and locked. The door did not fly open, I think locking mechanism helped keep the door from swinging out. There was an immediate rush of air coming through my door and the warning light came on saying driver's door was open. I was able to unlock and pull my door back into the closed position while in motion.
