2 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/02/2015

Our 2006 chevy Malibu low coolant light came on. It was checked and coolant was put in the vehicle. It continued to come on. It was taken to our regular chevy dealer in March 2015 who misdiagnosed the problem and replaced the coolant reservoir. The low coolant light came back on and we were loosing more engine coolant in June 2015. It was taken back to our dealer. We were told it has a cracked head gasket and the leak is internal. The chevy dealer recommended the entire engine be replaced as a precaution because it has over 100, 000 miles. Our 2006 chevy Malibu have been maintained well and kept up with all maintenance. . And for the gasket to be leaking is beyond us. The leak could not be seen to the visible eye. The only way we knew their was a leak was because the low coolant light came on, which was the reason why we took it to the mechanic. We are disappointed with the misdiagnose of our vehicle and with the problem. The chevy dealer did refund us for the misdiagnose of the problem but nothing else was offered or done. Now we have to figure out what to do because we need our car.

3 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/13/2011

Just bought 2001 chevy Malibu, its leaking coolant and the engine is overheating to the point of smoke. So the gasket is shot, I've taken this car in before over this problem but still seems to come back to the car overheating and smoke. No one seems to know how to fix this one guy told me to just get a new engine, the coolant dianostic didn't help and all of my coolant can't seem to stay in there it just leaks as soon as it's in, so now what??? there should have definately been a recall for this gm needs to fix this considering my engine was tested and refurbished by chevy no more than 8 months ago at the dealer. This car finally stalled out on the highway and almost killed me, there is no damage other than the ones I mentioned above.

4 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/12/2011

Having coolant leak, did not see any coolant leaking on the ground. Changed water pump, thermostat, and radiatior; still did not fix the problem. Found out intake gasket was cracked and had it fixed. Coolant still leaking, having to add coolant every day to every other day. Was told reservoir cap did not fit well. Replaced reservoir and cap and had vehicle bled. Ran fine for 3 days, then coolant starting leaking out again. Cant seem to find the problem of what is wrong with this vehicle. For a 2002 this vehicle does not have bad mileage, only 84,000 miles. This vehicle was bought brand new. I have read so many problems with this vehicle on the internet. Someone should do something about this. Chevrolet needs to do something about this. Chevrolet sold lemons when they sold these cars, thats for sure!!!.

8 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/26/2007

Defective gaskets causes engine coolant to leak into engine and mix with engine oil. Common problem for years on Chevrolet Malibu's and gm has never issued a recall. Or contacted consumers to notify them of this issue? I have always well maintained my car and done so to manufacturers specs. This is obvious disregard for their customers.

10 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 11/22/2006

At 62,000 miles I noticed that my engine coolant light was on. I filled the coolant. The light continued to come on and I filled it a few more times, but could not pinpoint the leak. Then, I realized that this was the same problem that I had earlier this year with my 2002 chevy impala. The head gaskets needed replaced. I was leaking water into my engine. Can you imagine buying two new chevy automobiles in the same year and 4 years later having both engines fail for the same reason. Seems like chevy is hiding a major problem. I see other complaints like this on the internet. I did not contact chevy since the warranty expired. Now, because of my internet research and the same problem with my impala, I know this is a common problem. So, I took my 2002 chevy Malibu at 62,000 miles to the same garage and they were able to replace the head gaskets and give me a price break and fixed it for $252. 00. Boo to chevy.

11 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/01/2006

: the contact stated when the vehicle was started, the check engine light illuminated. When an oil change was performed by an independent service dealer, a coolant leak was found on the engine next to the intake gasket. A second opinion was sought at another independent service dealers and when the leak was confirmed, the vehicle was taken to a service dealer and the manufacturer was notified. The contact continued to add coolant to the vehicle. The interior of the windows were coated by the coolant vapor, entering the vehicle through the ventilation system.

12 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/23/2006

My 2001 Malibu is starting to over heat and leak coolant from the engine. I have to keep putting coolant in constantly. I went to a mechanic, he stated it was a known problem but Chevrolet/gm will not recall the problem. I have a real problem because I don't feel that I should have to pay $600 for a known problem and it should be recalled. I was thinking about buy a new chevy, but after this issue I will never buy an american car again!!!.

14 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/17/2006

The incident is the failure of the water pump, a slapping noise coming from the engine, at one point the leakage of coolant, and also the oxygen sensor. All of which were taken back to the dealer to be fixed by their mechanic except the oxygen sensor. However, the car still had a problem with idling as the car was being driven away from the mechanic. My husband had to jump out of the car because of the issues, on his way to work and the car was stopped by a pole. This is the second time that the vehicle was taken to the dealer to be fixed however, I believe that the first time that it was taken to the dealer the problem were just masked only for us to be brought back to them for them to get more money out of us.

17 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 11/17/2005

When I went to the store I noticed a smell coming from my car I pulled over and noticed that coolant was leaking from my car. I opened the hood to cool down the engine since I assumed it might have overheated or something of the sort and it was only the run off. I added more fluid (everything was fine) and noticed the next morning it leaked again. I took the vehicle to the mechanic (to get my hazards module replaced since they began to start a fritz) and he told me it was the lower intake gasket and would be $850, not to mention he refused to offer the recall claim because I didn't have any papers.

18 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/07/2005

Took my 2000 Malibu in for an oil change. Was told the intake valve cover gasket was leaking. Could repair it for $825. Took it to the dealer the next day. Was quoted $765. Had dealer fix it. But had to use the "updated" gaskets. Which needed "updated" bolts. (approx. $40 extra) water pump was leaking from weep hole. Replaced. Total cost $966. 56. My car had 51,xxx miles on it. I feel that gm has had enough complaints about the intake gaskets leaking and that they should pay for the repairs. They know that there is a problem as there is now an updated gasket to be used. Was told by one shop that is the dex-cool eats away at the gaskets. If the coolant is good for 100,000 or 150,000 miles. Gm should cover any damage that is caused by it within that milage.

19 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/27/2005

I have been advised that the "intake is leaking coolant" on my 2000 chevy Malibu and that the cost of the repair will be approximately $825. 00. There are numerous articles of other Malibu owners on the internet that either currently have or have had this same problem. It would seem apparent that the intake is defective. The mechanic has advised that unless repaired, the engine will be destroyed. Can you imagine that happening on a freeway during rush hour? the loss of life would be terrible. I bought this car for my 17-year-old son thinking that I was purchasing a car that would provide him some added protection and now I find out he is driving a time bomb. In light of the numerous reports, I would like Chevrolet to repair my car at no charge to me.

20 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/17/2005

Our 2001 Malibu developed a coolant leak and in may of 05. The dealer replaced the upper intake gasket and said it was fixed. The engine would not maintain compression and kept stalling. I am disabled and I felt there was a safety issue. After 3 or 4 trips to the dealer without results I took the car to another mechanic who pointed out that it was the head gasket that was leaking. I am out a lot of money for a car that's not very old. After reading the other complaints from other Malibu owners I am convinced there must be a defect with these gaskets. I have also had to have the air conditioner completely replaced as well. I don't know if one has any thing to do with the other but it was at the same time. Now my heater won't turn off so it's over riding the air conditioner. Because of all of these repairs I have over $1000 in rental car expenses. This is a matter of safety as far as I'm concerned.

21 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/05/2005

Dex-cool coolant leaked into engine of my 2000 chevy Malibu. This is an ongoing problem for many gm owners, and it is well known by everyone expect gm. 23 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/02/2005

I have had problems with my engine coolant having to be replaced constantly. I took it to crest Chevrolet (san bernardino), they charged us to check the coolant problem, but did not find any. The problem persisted. On Jan 2, 2005 while traveling on the freeway, the engine overheated and caused a piston to misfire. I now am stuck having to replace an engine on a 4 year old car with less than 85,000 miles on it. According to mco tires, a head gasket was leaking coolant and caused the engine to overheat. The estimated cost of repair is $2300.

24 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/14/2004

Recently purchased a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu with 61k miles. Discovered multiple problems as others have described and covered under recalls, but some which are not. Worst problem is intake gasket is leaking resulting in coolant leak and coolant mixing with oil. Gm dealer states there are no campains or recalls on this item, although I have seen numerous complaints of the same problem on dozens of websites.

25 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/22/2003

This concerns the quality of a 2001 Malibu purchased new. This car has had a new engine, two ignition systems, two brake jobs, and now a major coolant leak that is to cost over $800. 00 to repair. It has had two sets of tiresand the vehicle only has 40,000 miles on it. It has had turn signal problems, injector fuel problems, and emergency light switch problems. In other words the cost of operation is more than the car payment per month. The quality of this vehicle ranks as a lemon.

28 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/12/2003

Intake gasket failed in my 1998 chevy Malibu, causing coolant to leak. I know this a huge problem with the plastic intake gaskets, should have a recall on this. Obviously a known problem on this car. Chevrolet should recall it.

29 Coolant Leaking problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/15/2003

The lower intake is leaking coolant, causing loss of coolant over a short period of time causing it to overheat. With the extended warranty it would not cover it unless the loss of coolant caused a head gasket to blow or another type of major damage. I work with 2 other people that have Malibu's and they had the same problem.

30 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/15/2002

Cars add engine coolant light came on, no obvious leaks; taken to auto repair place and was informed that I had an intake leak; then informed by another repair shop there was water in my oil ; possibly because of a problem with gasket; basically same situation as odi-id758781.

32 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

33 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/01/2001

Four different mechanics gave estimates on intake gasket replacement. All stated that this was a very common problem with the 3. 1 litre gm engines and they were surprised that gm has not issued a recall on these engines. One mechanic suspects it may be the dextron anti-freeze that GMC requires in there vehicles that is eating away at the gaskets and causing the coolant leakage. He had a Chevrolet lumina in the garage with the same problem when I got the estimate. Gm would not cover any of the repair cost unless we paid a gm dealer to evaluate the problem which other garages provided free of charge. I have a Ford and have received excellant customer service from Ford and their dealerships. I will not buy another gm product.

34 Coolant Leaking problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu
