4 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

My complaint is about my 2002 chevy Trailblazer. On the front right (passenger side) of the vehicle. Whenever I hit a bump there is an almost uncontrollable vibration. I have to bring the vehicle to a complete stop to make it stop. This started about two months ago and is gradually getting worse. I took it to a number of shops and they're all telling me the same thing. Transfer case. The cheapest estimate is about $1300 , and that is for a used transfer case. I love this truck and I really have not had any problems until recently. Then I started to read reviews and realized that I'm not the only one having this problem. I take very good care of my vehicles because I can't afford to keep buying new vehicles all the time,or very costly repairs. Just about every vehicle that I've owned has been 4 wheel drive and I've never had this problem before ,even on trucks with twice as many miles. I am hoping that there is something that can be done that may help me with this problem . I really can't afford a new truck and I don't want to repair it with used parts . By the way,the cost of repair with new parts is roughly around $2900 .

5 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 06/22/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While attempting to place the vehicle into reverse, it failed to move and a whining noise was coming from the engine. Through online research, the contact found NHTSA campaign id number 01v283000 regarding the transfer case, but the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact feels that this is a safety issue because the vehicle cannot operate in reverse. The current and failure mileages were 142,002.

6 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving approximately 40 mph on normal road conditions, the engine revved up without warning. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal, but there was no response. In addition, the four-wheel drive indicator was flashing intermittently. Roadside assistance was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing. The dealer stated that the encoder motor in the transfer case was the cause of the failure. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 01v283000 (power train;transfer case,4-wheel drive). The vehicle has been repaired. The failure mileage was 122,117 and current mileage was 122,250. The consumer stated the vehicle slipped out of gear and would not move. The 4ed drive indivator light illuminated. Updated 04/16/09.

7 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

I have 2002 chevy Trailblazer that transmission failed at 113,000 miles. Rebuilt at a cost of $2,000 by dealer. Also transfer case electronic modulator went out and replaced @ $800 by same dealer. Also replaced the fan clutch at same dealer for $800. Within 1 week I have spent $3,600. I have owned 6 new gm products and have never replaced this much expensive equipment. I know the transmission is a major issue and felt gm or the dealer should help on the repair. Dealer refused and would not request gm's help. The other items I am sure are related or replaced at a very high rate. Evidence of these repairs are all over the internet. My Trailblazer is driven by my wife to work and they are all road miles. I did not expect to pay for all costs but they could have worked with me. I paid $25,000 for this vehicle and expected a lot more. Gm does not deserve a bail out. They need a good ass kicking for the dumb asses that tried to support them all these years by buying their product. If there is help from all the bail out money they get include my $3,600. I would not expect a free repair but with the number of complaints there are they should be made to repair or reimburse on some kind of scale.

8 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While attempting to shift the gear into reverse, the contact heard a loud noise. She continued to drive the vehicle and, once at her destination, unsuccessfully attempted to shift into reverse again. The following morning, she attempted to drive the vehicle again and it made very loud noises under the hood. In addition, the gear would still not shift into reverse. The contact discovered that she was experiencing the same failures mentioned in NHTSA campaign id number 01v334000 (power train:transfer case (4-wheel drive)). The manufacturer informed her that her VIN was not included in the recall; therefore, she would be responsible for the repair costs. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 141,660 and current mileage was 141,694.

9 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2008

The first major problem I had with this Trailblazer I was driving down the road at 65 mph when for some reason the 4wd decided to shift into 4 low on its own. Well, this ripped out the cv joint half shaft on one side, destroyed the transfer case internals and broke off the axle housing from the aluminum oil pan on the engine. Ok, I got that fixed, added a new selector switch, then a few thousand miles later the transmission goes out while I'm on the interstate. It was completely destroyed inside. The transmission shop had to find a new core because mine looked like a bomb had went off inside it. So , I'm thinking it could have been caused by the first problem, maybe a delayed reaction? ok, we get a rebuilt transmission in it and just out of warranty it goes out again. No towing mind you, just easy highway miles with a mind on trying to get the best fuel mileage possible by driving like there was an egg between my foot and the accelerator pedal. So, I go to another transmission shop this time. Maybe the first guy didn't do a good job I'm thinking. So the 2nd transmission guy tells me that's not uncommon for the 4l60e to go out like that, they're garbage. So he puts me in a new tranny. Well, sure enough 6 months later it lost 3rd and 4th gears. The local shop is not to blame, these transmissions are junk. Many have flaws in them and gm knows it. So what are they going to do? unless I receive a recall notice on the transmission, the Trailblazer will keep its place in the backyard. Until the junk man comes around.

10 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2008

The 4 wheel drive randomly engaged and the selector lights would switch between awd, 4hi, & 4lo. This occurred on three separate occasions. The 4 selector switch now has gone out completely.

11 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2007

This vehicle would go out of gear without warning because of a faulty 4 wheel drive switching system. This occurred in traffic, and an unoccupied park situation. The vehicle went out of park and rolled into a door while in the garage. The vehicle also went out of gear in traffic situations causing the driver to find the road shoulder. If the driver manipulated the switch it would sometimes re-engage the transmission. An encoder motor sensor was replaced, then failed in two weeks. It was then diagnosed that the encoder motor was faulty and causing the encoder sensor to fail. Replaced motor and sensor again. This is a defect that should be part of the existing recall for all 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazers, not just the select few as prescribed today.

12 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2007

My 2002 chevy Trailblazer is having problems with the 4 wheel drive system. About a year ago when my vehicle was still under warranty I had a problem with my 4-wd system, the dash said service 4 wheel drive. I took it to the dealership and they plug it in to the computer and said they recalibrated the system because it was a computer error not equipment failure. On Dec 5 of 07 the roads were snowy so I put my vehicle into 4 wd, but the 4 wd did not engage and I slid off the road and almost ended up in a ditch. After that incident the service 4 wheel drive light came on again, on Dec 6 of 07, I took my vehicle in for service, and now my vehicle is out of warranty, this time the dealership said my 4-wd actuator was shorted out, my bill came to $838. 07. I contacted seven of my friends who have the same make and model, a couple with newer models, and they all except two of them, have had the same problem with the actuator shorting out. I then contacted gm corporate office on this matter and ask for assistance in paying for this repair due to faulty equipment and I said there is no reason for this part to go bad with 70,000 miles on a 2002 Trailblazer, they told me that due to my year of vehicle and miles there was nothing they would do for me. I told them there are other cases in the area with this same problem and I asked them to investigate this because it needs to be a recall, or find out what the problem is and fix it before other newer models are sent out with the same problem, and somebody actually gets hurt because of equipment failure. Gm stated there is nothing they will do with this unless it turns out to be an actual recall. So here I am making a complaint and asking for help. This needs to be investigated and solved before somebody is seriously hurt due to gm equipment failure!!! please help!!!!.

13 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2007

Jan/Feb 2007. Switched Trailblazer into 4 wheel drive high for first time since purchase (April 2006), and would not transfer into 4 wheel drive. Took to local gm dealer, replaced control module, cost around $700. October 24, 2007 while Trailblazer was in park and running the vehicle changed from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive low. The switch was still in the 2 wheel drive position. The vehicle would not change back into 2 wheel drive at all. I took the vehicle to the gm dealer and they replaced the encoder motor. November 20, 2007. Left vehical running while in park. Went into a family members house, then returned to vehicle and began to back out of driveway. As I was backing up, the vehicle stopped, as if I had backed into an object (ie, another car), I pulled forward back into the driveway, and looked around, saw nothing, and was going into the house to get a flashlight when they noticed that yet again, the Trailblazer had changed into 4 wheel drive again. This time I was able to get the vehicle back into 2 wheel drive, and drive the vehicle home. I have made an appointment to have the 4 wheel drive system checked again. Total cost for repairs to 4 wheel drive system January to date is more than $1200.

14 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 03/17/2007

- the contact stated that while having the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer parked in the incline driveway with the emergency brake engaged the vehicle rolled from the park position and crashed into the house. This failure happened to the contact's vehicle twice. The first time on January 29, 2007 , and the second time was on March 17, 2007. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and felt that the vehicle should be cover under NHTSA recall campaign id number: 01v334000 for the power train: transfer case (4-wheel drive), but the dealer stated that the vehicle did not fall under the recall. The current and failure mileage were both 40,000.

15 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2007

I was pulling a trailer with a 2002 chevy Trailblazer and it switched into 4 lo on its own causing me to loose control of the vehicle. I have had this problem with the 4 wheel drive for over a year. I have been turned away by gm and gm dealerships when I brought the problem to their attention.

16 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet trail blazer. While driving 10 mph including making left and right turns the 4 wheel drive engaged and became difficult to steer the vehicle. The contact attempted to accelerate and was unable to due to the 4 wheel drive. The warning indicator 4 wheel drive light was illuminated and remained on until the engine was turned off. The current and failure mileage were 57,610.

17 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2007

This will be the third time I have had my Trailblazer to the dealer for the same problem. When driving, the car will shift itself between 2hi and 4 hi. Also, after utilizing the selector on two occasions the car got stuck in neutral and had to be towed. After being treated like an ignorant woman who doesn't know how to operate the controls I am finally changing dealers. Maybe they should read this and see that apparently I am not the only person having these problems.

18 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2007

Service 4wd light came on after numerous attempts to change the transfer case from awd to 4wd. Dealer telling me that its a motor sensor that encodes the transfer to shift. This is the second repair on the same part. I would like this part recalled and to be reimbursed money for repairing it myself.

19 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2006

At 34000 miles 4 wheel drive transfer case failed and the rear differential had to be replaced, still under warranty. At 70000 miles both repairs are needed again along with others- sway bar worn, short in headlights (previously repaired), interior lights shorting. Dealership quoted around $3000 to fix everything. Nothing they can do about any of the problems. So the vehicle is without 4 wld and often only has 1 working headlight.

20 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2006

: the contact stated the range shift collar fractured resulting in failure of the transmission. The vehicle would not go into drive or reverse and would not stay in the park position. There is an NHTSA recall, # 01v283000, regarding the power train: transfer case (4-wheel drive). The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. The vehicle was repaired prior to the recall.

21 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2006

: the contact stated while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle slipped out of gear. The engine revved up to 4,000 rpm's; however, this did not cause the vehicle to accelerate. The vehicle was pulled over and it went back into gear. The transmission slipped again, but the vehicle was taken to the contact's residence. This happened 2 more times. The vehicle was then towed to the dealership. The dealership stated there is a broken gear in the transfer case and the transfer case must be replaced.

23 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2005

1. We have always had problems with our 2002 Trailblazer. At times, mostly when cold, the gas pedal would be unresponsive. We continually took it to the dealer who told us there was nothing wrong. In December of 2003 we could not get the vehicle to go into 4wd, took it to the dealer and they changed the transfer case control module. 2. In may of 2005 with approx. 80000 miles on our tb, the transmission failed. It would not shift beyond second gear. At the time we were driving somewhat slowly so it didn't create a dangerous circumstance. 3. We took it to the gm dealer who rebuilt the transmission for approx. $2200. Ever since the transmission was rebuilt, it has shifted hard in 1st and 2nd gear.

25 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

'02 Trailblazer-I bought the vehicle used at 30k. Every once in awhile when pulling it out of the garage the 4x4 selection lights would go out and the red "n" would flash. When I put the vehicle in neutral the red "n" would go out and the 2wd light would come on. At approx. 40k miles it did it one day when I was pulling out of the garage. Later that day I was just exiting the interstate and heard a loud grinding noise coming from the transfer case/transmission. The noise changed pitch with my speed. When I pulled over to the shoulder I put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine. When I took my foot off of the brake the vehicle started to roll down a hill. I re-applied the brake, started the vehicle and switched it from 2wd to 4wd then back to 2wd. The vehicle then was able to move and I took it directly to the dealership. After they looked at it the next day they said "could not duplicate the problem. " they also said that the flashing "n" was not normal and to bring it in if it did it again. After looking at this site I am very concerned for my family's safety in this vehicle. I spoke with Chevrolet customer service on 5/3/05 on this and another issue and was told that my vehicle VIN was not part of the list of those affected by this problem and that it would only be added if the dealership saw the problem.

32 Transfer Case problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2003

2wd 4wd selector switch changes position randomly. Caused a repair to front ring and pinion assembly in differential. Selector switch acted up at 50-70 mph range. Cost of repair: $2000. 00! gm will not cover under any warranty. Based on other consumers complaints. I would think if gm was aware of this many complaints for the same thing, should there not be a recall! my father and father-in-law both worked for gm. I agree with another consumer that gm has no regard for the safety of their buyers. I'm considering going to Ford!!! unless gm will stand behind their "bread winner"??.
