Every 15k miles or so the right rear caliper sticks and destroys the pads and associated rotor. I have replaced that specific caliper and both rotors three twice already. After around 25k to 30k miles I can no longer get the caliper to unfreeze. The vehicle now has 93k miles on it and I am about to replace it again. Once the outside pad gets to less than 30% the wheel tries to lock up. Once while driving in the country my wife nearly caught the car on fire because of overheating brakes. This form only allows for one entry, but as stated this has happened a multitude of times. The worst being when the rotor was glowing red before it was noticed by another person at a gas station. That happened in 2015.

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while at a stop light, the vehicle did not move. A smell of burning metal and tire was perceived and the contact notice smoke from the front driver's side without warning. The vehicle was taken to tires plus dealer (610-616-5256, located at 820 baltimore pike, springfield, PA 19064) where the technician replaced the calipers and rotors. The contact stated that about six months ago, the vehicle was taken to the jeff d'ambrosio Dodge Chrysler Jeep dealer (484-364-3777, located at 1221 e lancaster Ave, downingtown, PA 19335) where the technician diagnosed and replaced the rotors. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Mileage was 99,000. Fe.
My car has 132k miles and I'm replacing the brakes on the front for 8th time and the back for the 3rd time. Can't seem to get more than 15-20k miles out of a set of pads and rotors. Last two times I needed service the brake calipers had seized shredding the fairly new rotors which were so hot that I feared the car would catch on fire.
Multiple electrical systems malfunction from interior lights air conditioner blend door headlight indicator switch and window switch. Car has had several calipers fail within owning the used car in less then 2 years. Loss of power while driving. Fuel indicator malfunctions. All electrical issues started at the same time. Radio and interior screen malfunction. I am scared to drive this car. The key for will set off alarm when hitting unlock.

Since I have purchased the vehicle 4 years ago, I have had the brakes replaced 4 times due to premature ware. The calipers have also been replaced due to rear brakes not releasing and pads wearing and heating. One mechanic showed me where they were stressed from the high heat of this issue. Now my rear drivers side brake pad is gone completely unlike passenger sdie, though replaced at the same time including calipers. I believe it isn't releasing again.
Over the last 3 years I have had an excessive amount of work done on my brakes. On the front wheels, both have had 3 new sets of rotors, 2 of which had to be resurfaced, 3 sets of brake pads, 2 new calipers for the left and 1 for the right, 1 brake hose and 1 hub bearing for the left. The rear tires have had a new set of rotors, which were resurfaced today, and a new hub bearing on the rear left. The vehicle has never been wrecked, and I can confidently say my driving is not the cause of this issue. When the brakes have gone bad, I hear a squeal, there is vibration in the wheel and the brake pedal, and the car would pull to the left or the right, depending on which caliper needed to be replaced. This is a serious safety hazard that needs to be addressed on a much higher level than on the consumer's dime.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that the front suspension failed. The front end shook and vibrated out of control. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front end tie rod, brakes, calipers, and rotors were prematurely worn. The reason for the failures was unknown. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 61,653.
The braking system has been a serious problem from the first month of my purchase. Car was purchased in 2011, rotors & pads front replaced. Every year I replace rotors, pads calipers, even the master cylander. Recently an entire team of machanics worked several hours on the car, all were frustrated that they could not correct the brake problems. Said they have never seen anything like this before in their experience. Cost me $1000. 00! another problem showing up is the car just shuts off while driving. This , after the key was recalled and replaced. This has just happened twice.

The vehicle has a 100000+ miles never realized that I would have to change the brakes nearly 30 times in that time frame almost 4 or 5 times a year they shake vibrate I replaced the rotors the calipers shoes and anything to do with brakes including booster and fluid checked the brake pedal and everything they seem to lock up and at once so hot it melted my drivers side hub cap off they locked up in the middle of the freeway and almost caused an accident I feel the breaks are too light for the weight of the vehicle the car is paid for and out of warranty and can't replace the amount of money I paid fixing but is there a recall? has anybody filed a lawsuit?has anybody got hurt injured or even lost there life to these breaks?.
I bought my 2010 Dodge Journey new after an accident totaled out my previous vehicle. I am a single mom with one vehicle for our family of 4 and thought this would be a good safe vehicle for my family. Quite the opposite! I have spent so much money on this car for repairs, have had 2 recall issues (one of which left me and one of my daughters stranded on the side of the road at night), and have also had to replace the brakes, rotor, caliper, more times than I can remember. The last time was in Feb. And now my car has already recently started shaking again when I apply the brakes. I have only driven about 9,000 miles since replaced last. This is not a single incident but a repetitive safety issue. I cannot keep up with the extremely high amount of repairs and costs it takes to keep this vehicle safe to drive.
Our awd Journey had to have the back driver side braking system fixed at around 35000 miles. This included replacing the caliper and brake line. Now at 38000 the brake is sticking on the back driver side and will have to be worked on again. The vehicle is in motion on city and highways. It happens when it is both a curvy and straight road.
Purchased at monroeville Dodge pittsburgh PA. My brake calipers had become discolored and I became concerned. I asked the service representative to inspect my brakes and brake calipers. I was informed there was nothing wrong. I did take pictures of the brake calipers on all four wheels and found the discoloration through out the car. I find this unacceptable for a new car and forwarded my complaint to Dodge. Com. I have yet to receive a recall or notice that my complaint was registered. At thirteen months I had to have my front rotors resurfaced for a fee $125. 00. The service manager stated I just missed the one year on brakes on I had to pay. My brake calipers are still discolored now.

Brakes have been a major issue on this vehicle. We have had to replace brakes, rotors and calipers multiple times since the vehicle was purchased not to mention the tires also. The first time they were replaced, the car had less than 36,000 miles. Since that time they have been replaced multiple times, with the last time being in the last 30 days. It is like there is some type of design flaw in the braking system, that causes the brakes and tires to both wear out quickly. Last night the braking system caught fire on this vehicle, lucky I had just pulled in my parking spot when they started burning and didn't have my children with me. Fire department was notified and the fire was put out by them. I have noticed that I am not the only person with the Journey that has had brake and tire issues. Now I am stuck without any means of transportation thanks to the brakes catching fire (warping rims and melted tires from it). Thankfully no one was injured.
We have had our brakes/calipers/rotors/brake lines checked and/or replaced "3 times" over the past 4 months. Each time the mechanic was not comfortable with me driving the car in that condition - so he kept the car each time until it was fixed. Back in July - the brakes sounded horrible - grinding and squealing - and very very hot. In July, our mechanic said - brake pads were gone - rotors shot, caliper shot, so we paid over $400 to have all of that repaired. So, new rotors, brakes and calipers on the rear of this car. . . . . We thought the problem was fixed (although we are still puzzled at why the brakes/rotors/calipers were so bad). Well, 2 months later (September) the problem was back and worse this time. The rear driver side brake was insanely hot, you could hear it ticking with heat and could feel the heat from a foot or two away - the squealing sound was back and even worse. That we have had the same problem (brakes/rotors/calipers shot) 3 times in a four month period. Again in November, needed new brakes, calipers and it even ruined the brake line with the heat!!! the caliper "broke", the brake pads were worn down again - in only 2 months!!! our mechanic researched the problem and said Chrysler put the wrong brake system on the Dodge Journeys (years 2009-2013 I believe) and corrected it in 2014. The current brake system is not adequate for the weight of the vehicle. He said there is a class action lawsuit right now - but no recalls as of yet. He said it would be $400 for a new break system. Our mechanic also said auto zone will not longer keep replacing our brake pads for free (they did this 3 times as we thought it was faulty brake pads/calipers at first) as there is nothing wrong with their product - the problem is with the brake system in the Dodge Journey. Please help! how do we get Chrysler to replace this brake system to make it safe to drive?.
We were on our way to church and the steering wheel started shaking at about 55 mph so we slowed down and it stopped. As we continued on to church the wheel started shaking again and we drove a little faster and then slower. We made it to church and as we parked the car we noticed a burning smell. When I got out of the passenger side of the car there were metal plates popping out of the wheel. I noticed the cap on the wheel was melted. The metal plates were too hot to pick up and the wheel was extremely hot. We did some research on the internet and found complaints on lemonlaw. Com. There are also 12 reported complaints on carcomplaints. Com. If Dodge knows there is a problem like this; why isn't there a recall? I just had the oil changed at the Dodge dealership and they did an all point check up. The only thing they recommended was a tune-up. No problem was found with the brakes. The mechanic told me that the caliper got so hot it damaged the ceramic brake pads and rotor. He said the caliper could have locked up and we could have gotten in accident. We are fortunate that did not happen however it certainly could have. The repairs were over $400. I should not have this expense on this new of a vehicle. This is the first Dodge I have ever owned and loved this vehicle until now. Now I am not sure I will ever own another one. Very disappointed to say the least.
For a while now, randomly my Journey will get stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear after taking off. I will have to stop, put it in park, shut off the engine and restart it for it to reset itself. The steering wheel shakes when applying the breaks, but I've have a complete new set of brakes put on it, rotors and new calipers in the front. The brakes also make a knocking sound. I also got a complete set of tires and they seem to be wearing quicker than normal. I have had 3 different shops look at the breaks for a diagnoses and all of them say that the right parts on it and they don't see and reason for the noises.
Had rear brakes pads and rotors replaced because of frozen calipers. Took to dealer and said that caliper pin needed to be greased.
While driving vehicle at highway speeds right rear wheel locked up due to rear caliper failing to release . Caused large amount of smoke to pour from rear tire . Brakes were checked numerous times for noise under warranty . No faults were found according to the service department . Previously vehicle has had two sets of front rotors, three sets of front pads . Rear pads replaced at just over 31k miles . Now at 39k rear calipers are seized which caused damage to the rear rotors and pads . Dealership paid for the rear calipers . Chrysler refuses to answer my concerns . Just had to shell out $416. 00 for rear pads and rotors. Should have been taken care of while under warranty when it was first noted . Clearly this is a safety issue which should be investigated .
Upon doing routine brake inspection found both rear calipers to be not working and seized up.
Went to have my brakes inspected due to a screeching sound. The sound at 1st lasted about 2 weeks. By the time I made it to the brake shop it of course stopped. Upon inspection of the breaking system we were told that in 3 more days the brakes would have went out. We do not drive hard or ever have to stop fast. My husband & I learned that the brake system has an known issue with the brake shop. . We were told the brakes will screech & then stop working if not fixed right away! that's very scary as we don not want to crash & kill someone or our selves. The brake system failed starting with the calipers & was rubbing in the pad causing extreme wear & is was said the manufactured brake are not made to stop a vehicle so heavy as ours. And for that reason we were told to file a complaint. I called Dodge & was told the warranty has expired & we would had to pay for it on our own. Also when we bought the Dodge in 2010 brand new the alignment was off & was pulling to the right. After having the alignment & brakes repaired for a second time in under 2years it is clearly an issue with the the brake system. This time it will cost us $575. 00 to repair just the brake system. . This needs to be recalled ASAP! before someone is hurt or killed!! and Dodge should own up to this issue! in addition the a/c has a loose connection & will stop blowing for no reason. And other issue to deal with in hot weather!.
The contact owns a 2013 Dodge Journey. The contact had not experienced a brake failure until the vehicle was repaired for NHTSA campaign number: 15v675000 (electronic stability control, service brakes, hydraulic). After the dealer's repair, there was extensive moisture. The dealer later determined that all the calipers were rusted and corroded. The dealer stated that the parts needed to be replaced. The manufacturer's remedy for the recall failed to provide a solution and the condition continued. The manufacturer was notified of the failure several times and provided no solution other than for the contact to replace the parts. The dealer did not indicate what caused the moisture after the recall repair was completed. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

Have had the rack and pinion fixed 1 1/2 years ago and it is leaking again. Have had to put 3 sets of brake pads on in 3 years. Also had to put new rotor and brake caliper on right front due to brake locking up! this car only has 53,600 miles on it and has been one thing after another breaking down on it. Been told by two Dodge machanics this should not be happening. Would like for the dealer to do something about it. Been told there were recalls on this car and we have never gotten one in the mail. Help!!.
After 45 minutes of combined in-town and highway driving (approx. 16 miles total) during rush hour car began to smell hot. When stopped visible smoke from right front wheel well. Car pulling to the right and slight vibration in steering wheel. After inspection it was discovered the caliper was locked-up. Replaced front right brake pad and caliper. All 4 rotors were turned 01/2013.
After having the brakes & rotars replaced in June of 2012 at 47k miles, I started hearing a little screech from my brakes. I took it to my mechanic and paid for an inspection. He found the brake hose had failed because it was not suitable for this big of a vehicle. In return that caused the caliper to compress against the rotar causing abnormally fast wear & tear on the brake pads. My brakes, rotars, calipars & brake hose need to be repaired after 13k miles. I am having to replace the whole brake system every year.
Vehicle failed state inspection third year in a row all for same reason and it gets worse. In Feb 2011 which is first year I owned the vehicle and got the inspection myself, it failed for rear brake rotors and they were not able to be resurfaced. In Feb 2012 the vehicle again failed for rear rotors and again they were to bad o be resurfaced. In Feb 2013 I checked my brakes before going in cause I had heard noises and screaching from them for about a couple months leading up to inspection time. Rear rotors were indeed bad again. The right rear rotor wore a 7 mm groove into it and the pad incidently had a mirroring groove where it had not worn. Next both rear calipers I found were seized (I do know these are screw type calipers instead of compression calipers). 3 years in a row I have changed rear rotors and pads. Front brakes are fine and have had normal wear. I have only changed front pads once and had the rotors resurfaced once. Calipers are fine.
On 2 separate instances the brake calipers locked up and caused the brakes to smoke badly. The first time was in heavy traffic going slow and it was the right rear brake. A week later, also in heavy traffic, the left front locked up and started to smoke. In the second incident, the wheel was too hot to touch which I feel could cause the tire pressure to build up causing the possibility of a blow out at speed.
I brought car used Feb 2012 with around 78500. Shortly after I got the car I started noticing the vibration when I applied the brakes. So I took it and had the brake pads and rotors replaced on the front. Well it still was vibrating when I would apply the brakes. So I was told that maybe the calipers was bad. So a couple weeks later they put on new pads, rotors and calipers. Well the vibration stopped. Well at least for about 3 months and the vibration when I apply my brakes came back. So I took it back and was told that they are going to put ome dealer pads and rotors on and that should take care of the problem. So im waiting to get those put on and see if it will make a difference like they say.
The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Journey. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle, he began to engage the brakes and the steering wheel began to shake violently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and stated that the calipers were too small and it would heat up the rotors. As a result, the calipers and rotors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 2000.
We had to change the brake pads and/or rotors three times in 70,000 miles. The last brake job required replacing the rear caliper, along with the rotors and pads - which was very costly. The mechanic told us this was fairly common, with this car. My only complaint with this vehicle, is the brakes. They are simply terrible. Dodge really needs to fix this mistake.
Brakes have squealed intermittently since purchasing this car. I have returned to dealer at least 4 times. Dealer replaced pads twice and rotors once. Continued to squeal. Replaced pads and rotors with high quality aftermarket parts. Now after 4 months pads and rotors are glazed and squeaking again and has a burning smell after driving for short distance. Took back to another dealer to check the calipers for sticking. Dealer says that calipers are working properly. I feel that this problem can develop into a safety concern. I have two small children so I am concerned for their safety. Something is very wrong but no one seems to want to take care of the problem. The vehicle has only 27500 miles and now needs it's 4th set of front brakes.
I experienced shaking/pulsations on the brake pedal when slowing down for a stop (the faster I was going before decline in speed, the larger the shaking/pulsation would be). I took the vehicle to a local mechanic who informed me that the calipers on the front wheels were sticking and that the pistons were getting hot and would eventually crack. He also informed me that this is not normal for a vehicle that is less than 2 years old with only 15k miles on it.
We have had our car for 15 months now, brake pads and rotors need to be replaced every 3-5 months! caliper on front end was so damaged from brake system the mechanic almost wouldn't let us drive home. This is our only car we have 2 kids and one income, we can't afford to risk our children's lives, and we can't afford to keep making payments on a death trap on top of all the repairs.
I live and bought the car in guadalajara, mexico. But since it is essentially the same as those sold in the USA, and other countries I hope my experience with the car problem I am describing below, helps other owners. Only a few months after we bought a brand new 2011 Dodge jouney noticed a strong steering wheel vibration when braking from any speed. Car stopped ok, but annoying and felt unsafe. Took to dealer, they found a warped left front rotor and prematurely worn front pads, had to fix on my expense. After only 5000 or so more miles same failure again, this time took car to a specialized brakes shop, they again found warped rotor (replaced new), worn pads, etc. Again after another 6k miles, same failure. Took the car to the same brake shop. They were so puzzled by the repeating failure and low mileage in between that this time they did a very thorough disassembly and inspection of the brakes system. This time though, we successfully found the root cause of the problem: warped and worn pins where the calipers sit and slide to grip the pads when braking. This, under some conditions apparently caused caliper to "stick" (due to warping and noticeable indentation from excessive wear), causing some permanent braking on rotors with obvious overheating, rotor wear, warping and excessive (and notoriously uneven) wear of brake pads. So, the pins were replaced along with the pads and rotor, I am happy to say that at least in my car this completely solved the problem for good, this last time I had the brakes serviced the pads lasted over 14k miles prior to replacement and no vibration was felt again, (we live on a hilly area and use a lot of braking downhill, so 14k miles pad life is acceptable and comparable to other cars we owned). Hope this helps the hundreds of owners experiencing this same problem as seen in many forums over the internet.
