3 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 05/28/2019

My son and I were leaving a parking lot when suddenly and without warning the power steering went out. I got a warning chime and the wrench light came on with the message "service pwr steering" on the dash. Luckily (I thought) I was near a auto parts place so I slowly drove there. I pulled in, took out the manual and realized that there is no power steering fluid reservoir to check or fill (as would have been my quick solution to the problem). Driving was slow and potentially dangerous due to inability to turn (at speed). The vehicle was initially purchased for my mom, who was 75 at the time. The loss of power steering for her would have been much more serious. Driving with manual steering is difficult and muscle building. I had to drive 25 back home on curvy, mountain back roads. Luckily there was no accident/injuries as a result of the power steering failure. I read through many complaints of similar incidents and realized that there is a problem that has not been resolved. I plan on contacting the dealership in the morning, but am not holding my breath for results. During a past issue I was told that the dealership had only one service technician that was trained on the hybrid vehicles. That time, they said I needed a new battery! haha! that issue was resolved due to a recall. So maybe enough complaints for power steering issues will finally get a recall too. Please take notice.

4 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/03/2019

Power steering fail no dash codes e s p failed no power assist to turn the steering.

5 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 03/13/2019

The power steering assist has gone out. Ford did a recall on this part but if you weren't having any problems with it at the time they did the recall they would just flash your ecu and call it good. This doesn't actually prevent the failure from happening. So eventually the power steering fails like it did to me while I was driving on the freeway, which is a known problem. They then want to charge you to have the steering angle torque sensor replaced. This is a safety issue and should be replaced by Ford at their expense.

6 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/03/2019

Power steering failed during very cold temperature. Could not turn the wheel.

7 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/27/2018

While driving the power steering just failed, the steering column became very hard to use and needs replaced. I had felt a small chimy in the steering wheel at a stop a day or 2 beforehand, that is the only possible warning, but didn't repeat. It just failed while running errands in town, dashboard problem lit up and is worse than a car without any power steering. Even though I was told it is safe to drive without replacing the power steering, the difficulty of it makes me wonder how safe it really is for most drivers. Date is appx, but very close to end of Dec 2018.

The vehicle was taken to friendly Ford (2250 south rd, poughkeepsie, NY 12601, (845) 462-1900) and no failure code was found. The contact stated that the vehicle was currently experiencing power steering failures. The dealer diagnosed that the power steering module needed to be replaced, but they would not cover the repairs because they already addressed the recall during the earlier visit. The contact was advised by the dealer to escalate his complaint to a tier 2 level. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall. The manufacturer and the dealer later stated that a tier 2 inquiry could not be done because the case was closed. The failure mileage was 155,000.

Long mcarthur Ford of salina, kansas located at 67401 3450 south 9th st (785) 823-2237, reprogrammed the power steering control module, as outlined in the recall campaign. The dealer later recommended that steering wheel be replaced but could not perform repair due to an absence of the necessary dtc (diagnostic trouble code) which would authorize a steering wheel replacement or a torque angle sensor replacement. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: cas-15217422. The failure mileage was approximately 91,000. Ad.

17 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 07/21/2017

. In 2012 and 2013, I had power steering failures while driving, luckily resulting in no collisions. Both times I took my vehicle into a Ford dealer. Both times, I was told that nothing was wrong with my vehicle. In 2014, Ford issued a recall for a faulty sensor in the power steering. I immediately brought my Ford to my dealer for service. Instead of replacing the steering column, they choose a 2nd option (cheaper) and simply reprogrammed/ rebooted the sensor. On July 21st, 2017, I parked my car and when I came out a started the car, I had no power steering. I was lucky I wasn't on the highway. I had the car towed to a local service center and they told me that according to the computer the same part failed again. They re-set the sensor and we took the car into our Ford dealer to have it serviced for the recall. Both the Ford dealer and Ford na toll free service center (I spoke to darren in August 8th) told me that because Ford had already performed the recall service that they will not honor this issue as part of the recall. However, since the Ford dealer took the cheaper option and reprogrammed the sensor, Ford should honor the recall and replace the steering column. This is the service that our Ford dealer stated is now required to fix the issue. We are faced with spending thousands of dollars or driving essentially an unsafe vehicle because Ford was allowed to offer this 'cheaper' recall service to Ford owners. It's a disgrace.

18 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

While driving the power steering will completely fail unexpectedly and a yellow wrench will appear on the dashboard. This is very dangerous as it comes unexpectedly but will come back on when the vehicle is turned off and on again. The steering is extremely difficult to muscle through when the power steering fails. The steering can fail at any time while driving or parked when the vehicle is on and it happens almost 100% of the time that I drive the vehicle. It seems to be worse in hot weather.

19 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

Received a safety recall notice 14s05. Took to local dealership who performed sensor reset. Two thousand miles later the power steering failed while driving and the vehicle lurched to the right nearly hitting a cyclist in bike lane and startling me as I was barely unable to manhandle to now manual steering vehicle to avoid the collision. I am quite strong and it is likely anyone w/less body strength would not have been able to command the vehicle. That is when I reviewed the voluminous complaints filed and determined Ford is completely unwilling to accept responsibility for what was a faulty part subjecting to owners to great risk of injury. It appears based on my research that the recall service done was a farce and waste of time for consumers w/no real reduction of safety risk. Furthermore, it seems the NHTSA is weak in response to the safety risk and not requiring Ford to replace the part and reduce the chances of a serious vehicle crash.

20 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/04/2017

Was getting in vehicle to go work. Started engine and put into reverse to pull out of driveway and noticed how hard it was to turn steering wheel. Couldn't turn steering wheel hardly at all. Pulled back up on driveway and turned vehicle off. Started vehicle again and tried again. Was able to drive vehicle but the power steering was not working. It was like diving a old manual steering vehicle; very stiff and took all my might to make turns. During the day; Wednesday called Ford dealership and talked with a service mgr. Who looked up information on our service records. He told me we had brought the 2009 Escape Hybrid for the 2014 recall back in sept. 2014 and had it serviced. They had reset the computer and said it was fixed. It is now April 2017 and have had power steering failure and Ford service mgr. Told me to bring in vehicle the would hook up and run diagnostic on vehicle which will cost me $127 plus the cost of whatever is wrong. Ford will not cover any costs that may be incurred. My vehicle did not give any warning of power steering failure while I drove it or did it ever have any sensor lights come on. As this is a problem that was recognized by ntsb and Ford to cause recall in past and Ford didn't fix problem so wouldn't happen they should be responsible to cover any repairs and costs so I do not have any accidents with the vehicle now or in the future. I should not have to worry every time I get into drive that I could have power steering failure.

21 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/11/2017

Remedy recall 14s05 -- power steering control module (pscm) software update performed (as directed) did not adequately remedy the safety defect (the torque sensor itself) and may in fact cause further issues with the vehicles power steering. Ford currently does not provide assistance for repairs under the safety recall. Perhaps they are waiting for more injury /civil lawsuits before addressing these critical safety concerns. The NHTSA also partly shares the blame for this . . . After issuing recall 14v-284 (voq 10670665), they have been informed of the continued pscm issues and have neglected to grant a decision that directly addresses the steering wheel torque sensor defect. Shame on you. Date of recall performed on 9/3/2014 at odo 116,044. Electric power steering assist failure observed and taken into dealership on 1/11/2017 at odo 139,151. Ford customer care denied assistance in replacing the torque sensor as noted in recall 14s05. I was told, "the recall addressed the software issue, not the defective part(s) and too much time has elapsed for our company to help you pay for the repair. " Ford would rather its drivers (vehicles) operate in condition that is unsafe and at an increased risk of crash or injury, than go the extra mile to ensure the safety concern is resolved. Seeing as other petitioners have had the same issue and this is an open and ongoing investigation, myself and other drivers would appreciate an expedited response from the NHTSA to reconcile and re-mediate this issue. Thank you.

22 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/03/2017

The power steering completely failed while driving my 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid, the steering instantly became extremely stiff and I was forced off the road and immediately stopped on the side of the road. I could not turn the wheel without extreme amount of effort. The yellow wrench symbol lit up and a warning message came "service pwr steering. " the fail was instant and nearly caused me to crash into another vehicle parked on the side of the road. I had just completing a left turn when the power steering failed and almost lost control of the vehicle when it steering seized up. I checked all 4 fused related to the power steering and all of them are good. Upon further research this is a common problem with Ford hybrid vehicles and it requires the entire steering column to be replaced (a $1500-$2000 job). There has not been a recall on this issue, but needs to be ASAP.

23 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

The contact owns a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. While driving approximately 75 mph, the power steering assist faulty message suddenly displayed. Also, the power steering suddenly failed and caused the steering wheel to become very difficult to turn. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact indicated that the vehicle was previously repaired per a recall for the same failure in November of 2014. The recall information was not available. The failure mileage was 154,000.

24 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 12/01/2016

While driving and parking, the power steering failed. A warning light came up on the dash board saying stop now. Power steering fail.

25 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2011 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/25/2016

The power steering failed as I pulled my escape from a parking space on a city street; I could go forward or back but only turn the steering wheel with great effort. I drove home with great difficulty, barely able to turn the wheel for the turns I had to make -- it was a very dangerous situation. I checked the nhsta website and learned that Ford has issued a recall for model year 2008-2011 escapes made in the kansas city, mo. Factory due to power steering failure and that NHTSA has an open investigation into the issue. The dealership manager towed it the next morning and told me that it would cost $2100 to replace the power steering column and housing. When I asked why it wasn't covered under the the recall when it met all the criteria, he said because it's a hybrid - the recall only applies to non-hybrids. However, the manager said he would try to get it covered. He was able to get Ford to cover two-thirds of the cost; I still had to pay $500. The manager was great, Ford was not. I'm extremely upset by Ford's position that hybrids aren't covered under the recall when the problem is exactly the same and the car met all the criteria. It was a terrible way to treat a life long Ford owner. Things would have been even worse if it weren't for the manager who was very customer-oriented.

26 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

I was driving low speeds in a parking lot and crashed due to a power steering failure. I was trying to turn 90 degrees but it was extremely difficult to turn the steering wheel even with both arms. I had a low-speed crash that wrecked my front end. I checked with Ford dealer but they stated the power steering recall did not apply to my Ford Escape Hybrid. I'm disappointed that the same faulty steering system in my hybrid is not covered.

27 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

When driving at all speeds, but more so at slower "city" speeds, the power steering has failed and control can only be maintained via manual steering which is difficult to control and maneuver. This vehicle had been "reprogrammed" without any reported symptoms in 2014 and has now experienced these issues approximately 10k miles later. This reprogramming was done through a previous recall program that did not have an adequate repair to solve the problem.

28 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 04/05/2016

Power steering failed suddenly while driving nearly causing a serious accident. This appears to be a known problem for 2007 Ford escape vehicles and there is a recall - but for some reason it only covers 2008-2011 even though the message boards show dozens of 2007s with the exact same problem. In fact, my vehicle was manufactured in the same kansas city plant during the covered period (after August 18, 2006), yet it is inexplicably not included in the recall. After having the power steering module replaced with a used one. The steering failed again after barely a day. This is a widespread problem that should be included in the Ford 14s05 recall NHTSA campaign number: 14v284000.

29 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 11/24/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid. The contact stated that while parked. The power steering failed. The contact stated that when the vehicle was driven to an independent mechanic, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the power steering car module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 137,000. VIN was not provided. Ed.

30 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 06/03/2015

My 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid has a power steering recall out. The vehicle was taken in to a local dealership to be repaired in accordance with the recall. However, within three days the power steering shut off without warning. The point of the recall was to address this issue of sudden power steering shutoff without warning. After talking with the dealership, they acknowledged that the recall does not adequately address the problem and multiple customers have complained that the power steering is still failing after being "fixed" in accordance with the recall. There are 1. 1 million vehicles affected by this recall and Ford has yet to properly address the issue. This recall has been in effect since may 2014 and the problem is not being fixed.

31 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/23/2015

While driving at 30mph the power steering failed making the vehicle extremely hard to steer. After about 2 minutes the "pwr steering service" message was displayed and the wrench light was lit. After getting the vehicle to a safe area I restarted it and there still was no power steering. I then let the vehicle sit for approximately 2 hours, restarted it again and power steering had returned.

32 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/23/2015

I was driving and without any warning or indicators the power steering failed causing sudden loss of power steering assist. I was able to steer the vehicle to the side of the road with great effort. It is the same thing that happened with some 2011 Ford escape models made at the same plant in kansas city and those vehicles where recalled.

33 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/20/2015

The electric power steering failed to function on start up. After several attemps to restart the vehicle power steering activated. If this happens while driving could cause a serious accident.

34 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/15/2015

Abrupt loss of power steering assist. Electric power assisted steering system failed. Does gives message "service pwr steering" on dashboard, but provides no useful function. Car did not crash at time of failure, but controlling it was very difficult, requiring high physical effort to move steering wheel. Though manufacturer has recalled 2008 model for this problem, 2006 is not on the recall and manufacturer refuses to provide repair.

35 Power Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid

Failure Date: 02/07/2015

Local Ford dealer complied with Ford recall notice two months ago on steering column. They said there were no problems with the sensor. Last weekend, "power steering assist fault" light came on. Never before hand a problem with steering or had ever seen this indicator light. Within 24 hours of first seeing the warning light, the power steering failed completely. I took it to the dealer yesterday. This morning the dealer tells me I need to replace the steering column, to be paid for by me personally, as it is not covered by this recall (which incidentally stated it would replace the steering column if necessary). Approx. Cost $1200, which I have authorized. Googling around the internet, it seems I am not alone.
