The contact stated that his wife smelled like the brakes were burning. The contact stated that his wife did not notice any warning lights being illuminated. The driver pulled over and turned off the vehicle; however, the vehicle failed to restart. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the clutch flywheel had fractured and separated. The mechanic also stated that the clutch plate needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. A few times a year, my 2005 Subaru Forester with stick shift will not start after parking. However, after shifting the gears a few times, it will start. It appears to me that the sensor sensed incorrectly that the car was in gear other than neutral and hence it would not start despite the gear was in physically in neutral and the clutch was fully depressed. After shifting the gears a few times, the electronic might have corrected itself. I am concerned if other electronics problems may happen while driving, as what happened to Toyota. Too bad that there may not enough data with stick shift.

Our 2004 model, manual gear-box Subaru Forester 2. 5 x stalls far too
easily in first gear. Recently, my wife narrowly escaped a horrendous
accident when the Forester's engine stalled on a busy highway trying to
accelerate onto the highway from the side road which she has to use to
access the highway from her place of work. We have spoken to other manual gear-box Subaru owners, including the Subaru
wrx and liberty, who have told us that they experience the same problem. We believe that this may be a fundamental design issue affecting most
recently built manual gear box Subaru passenger vehicles, built by Subaru at
their main factory in japan, and distributed globally, including but not
limited to the USA.

In early 2008 my Subaru began popping out of fifth gear. This is very inconvenient and unsafe as it causes an immediate loss of speed. On a freeway grade for example I have almost been rammed from behind by vehicles following too closely even though I was traveling at the speed limit in the right lane. Upon investigation I learned that this is a common defect in this model of Subaru and is covered by technical bulletin 17 01/01/2002. My mechanic removed the rear of the transmission and tightened the loose mainshaft nut at a cost of $417. This solved the problem for a while but a year and a half later the problem has returned. The car routinely pops out of fifth gear to the point the vehicle cannot be driven in that gear on the highway. I emailed Subaru about this but they say it is not their problem because the car is out of warranty. I believe that this is a design and/or manufacturing flaw which is expensive to repair and is a definite safety hazard which should be made right by Subaru.

The contact owns a 2009 Subaru Forester. When engaging the clutch, the manual transmission revved up to approximately 4000 rpms and seemed as if it would surge. The failure occurred 85% of the time. The dealer also duplicated the failure. The manufacturer advised the dealer that they would write a computer program to remedy the issue; however, the dealer has not followed up with the contact. Problem 1: date 5/22/07 date out: 5/23/07 problem: brakes or transmission locked up; I had to have the vehicle towed to the dealership. Problem 2: date 6/22/07 date out: 6/22/07 problem: brakes or transmission locking up. The way that the dealership handled this issue is by disengaging the hill holder function. Additionally, the driver's side frontal airbag did not deploy during a front-end collision; yet the impact of the collision was serious enough to cause $9,200 worth of damages. Furthermore, one week prior to the accident, the passenger airbag detection light was not indicating initiation when there was a passenger, using the seatbelt, in the passenger seat. We had planned on taking the car in to have passenger airbag system assessed. I sent a request to the flatiron imports on 12/5/07, requesting that the entire airbag system be assessed for proper functioning while it is being serviced for the mechanical damages caused by the accident; however, I have not received a confirmation of this request as of 12/12/07.
This is a repeatable event that could lead to an injury:
purchased a new 2006 Subaru Forester 2. 5x end of October 2005. After approx. Two weeks car began to experience unexpected engine rpm increases immediately after a "cold start. " when car is first started, engine rpms are at around 1500. Put car into reverse and back out of parking space. When the clutch is depressed, engine rpms shoot up to 3000+. Then, after putting car in 1st gear, and releasing clutch, engine rpms drop to about 1500 but slowly increase to around 2500-3000 rpm and vehicle speed increases without foot even being on the accelerator. Problem usually clears up after driving a few minutes except on one occasion when car had been operating for around 15 minutes. . . When I came home for lunch and pulled into our drive and put in the clutch, the rpms shot up to around 3000. Turning the vehicle off and restarting will "reset" the rpms to around 1500 until it is put in gear once again and the clutch depressed. A couple of times this happened: after the rpms shot up to 3000+, I kept the clutch pressed to see how long the rpms would stay around 3000. The rpms did a decaying sinusoidal oscillation of about 6 cycles over a period of about 30-45 seconds, finally leveling out arount 1500 rpm.

After being told that it is normal for Subaru clutches to have clutch judder, and now out of my 60,000 warranty, I find that Subaru has issued a TSB to fix the clutch judder problem. I feel this is a recall issue and I should get a warrantied repair of my clutch as should other Subaru owners with this maufacturer's defect.

Manual transmission. Clutch shudders (chatters) in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear. Problem occurs after car has not been used for a while (such as overnight), and especially in the morning. Car was bought used with 14,000 miles, and had this problem from when it was bought. Dealer replaced clutch assembly which appears to have remedied the problem.

Engine started to race while driving,transmission won't engage without grinding. Needs new clutch. Not sure why a clutch should go in 2 years of having the car.

Vehicle delayed then jerked into reverse, running into a building an causing significant vehicle damage.
Clutch cannot handle engine torque. Clutch chatters on engagement when cold, resulting in vehicle not starting up and accelerating as expected. This could cause accident if vehicle cannot move out of way of other traffic. Clutch vibration on hard acceleration first noted at 8653 miles and reported to dealer. Noticeable chatter when cold (under 40 degrees outside temp) until used several times. Chatter continues to become worse and occur at higher temperatures as mileage increases. Reported to delaer at 30,110 miles and dealer could not duplicate. Reported again at 35,913 miles and dealer noted but siad did not require repair. Reported again at 48,000 miles and dealer wants to repair at customer expense. Problem would have been covered under warranty if repaired at original report (8653 miles).
The hill-holder feature on the manual transmissio activates while backing into a parking space and utilizing the foot brake--as a result in order to resume backing up too much force on the accelerator pedal must be used causing the vehicle to lurch backward.
