4 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 12/13/2010

Acura Cl 3. 2 2003 w/ 60k miles, maintained on a regular basis exceeding owners manual recommendations and driven conservatively by a professional female: car being driven on heavily trafficked road normally, and very abruptly/suddenly geared down to low gear from high gear. Violently jerked and shifted, causing the car to instantly go from around 50 mph to only around 10-15 mph. No warning lights or previous problems. If car had been being driven on the busy, high speed interstate leaving san francisco at 60+ surrounded by traffic (luckily had just exited the interstate and was on secondary road), it could easily have caused fatal accidents. Luckily, I was able to immediately access a shoulder to pull over. Drove car to Acura service on side road with flashers on - took nearly an hour to go 6 miles. Warning light finally came on a half mile from the dealership, although problem had happened several miles before and could easily have caused major accidents, based on driving situation. Acura service determined that transmission was defective and replaced it. Even though I later learned that the same model and year had been put under an extended warranty and was the subject of a Class action lawsuit, I had never received any notifications. Further, I was told by Acura corp and the dealership that my VIN number was not part of the problem/ lawsuit and I was required to pay for the new transmission, on the Acura with 60k miles that was in otherwise excellent condition. .

5 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 07/26/2010

The contact owns a 2001 Acura 3. 2cl. The contact stated that when she drove in second gear, the vehicle seemed to buckle. She would have to let her foot off the accelerator pedal in order for it to gain momentum. Other times, it would not connect into the second or third gear. The vehicle had previously been repaired according to recall 04v176000 (power train: automatic transmission) and the dealer refused to repair it again. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 205,000. The failure mileage was approximately 198,000.

6 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 06/03/2010

While driving my 2001 Acura Cl type s to work (about 10 miles) my car would not go above 45 mph, then only 30 mph, but was able to make it into the parking lot. An hour later wanted to take the car to an auto shop and all seemed normal until about 6 miles after when the car would no longer move (engine still running ok). Tried all gears but to no avail. Let the car sit for 10 minutes and car worked ok again and was able to drive it to the auto repair shop. The next day they called and stated the transmission is "shot". All Clutches are bad. They installed a jasper remanufactured transmission. I was told that Acura only used this transmission type for the 2001 model. It was the first year for that transmission and the last year. I assume there were a lot of problems with it and Acura went to a different transmission for the 2002 model year. It cost me $4500 to replace the transmission. I had about 102,000 miles on the car at the time of this failure. Note: there was a recall on the transmission from Acura and I did bring the car back to Acura for the recall notice.

7 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 05/03/2010

2001 Acura Cls (VIN [xxx]). When pulling out onto a major road (55mph) with oncoming traffic the car paused as the trans slipped, the engine revved to 5000 rpm, the trans then locked into gear, the tires squealed and the car lurched forward. Thank god that my wife didn't run into someone or lose control of the vehicle. Now I read that this is common with this model year and transmission. The NHTSA knew of the problem and a Class action settlement was offered. However nothing was done to make owners and the general public safer. It seems to me that at a minimum the NHTSA should have mandated Acura to warn owners, and mandate Acura to perform more routine inspections on this poorly designed transmission, and perhaps more frequent fluid changes. I read that the NHTSA was considering additional action on this issue and hope you do. This incident occurred with no prior warning. Allowing a 240 hp car on the road with this type of known failure is unsafe to owners and the general public in my view. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

8 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I have a 2001 Acura Cl-s, having severe problems with the transmission. There was a recall, but they say it is out of warranty, by time. Problem is when I bought the car 2 years ago I brought this to someone's attention at Acura , and was pushed away as if I knew nothing, and now they want to charge me Close to $5000 to replace the transmission.

9 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Acura CL

Failure Date: 09/18/2009

The contact owns a 1997 Acura 3. 0cl. While driving 50 mph, the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road when the check engine light came on. The dealer advised the contact that it would cost $3000 to repair the transmission. There are no related recalls or warranties available. The failure mileage was 88,000.

10 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 09/10/2009

Transmission in my 2003 Acura Cls had shifting problems. It would downshift randomly for no reason and throw you hard against your seat belt. It was so bad I had to take it to the Acura dealership where they said the transmission needed replaced. Other Acura Cl's and Acura products had a recall for this transmission problem that required them to replace the transmission, but mine was supposedly a vehicle that was not affected and not covered under the recall. The Acura dealer replaced the transmission and covered 1/2 the cost after I asked them to contact their local Acura dealer rep.

11 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 08/03/2009

2001 Acura Cl 3. 2 automatic transmission, accelerating into the freeway and it automatically shifted into neutral. Pushed the gas and it wouldn't accelerate and the engine revved up. The drive was still in d5. Car in the back almost hit me.

12 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 05/20/2009

The car would not take off when it's on drive fell like it on neutral for a few seconds and would not reverse when it's on r 2003 Acura Cl type-s automatic transmission faulty. According to the Class action law suit against Acura they are liable to repair or replace the faulty transmission. Acre has offer to extended the warranty to 7 years 9 months or 109,000 miles. I called acre to report the problem and asked about the extend warranty and was told that my car was fixed on recall 2004 and it was a one time fixed only, no extend warranty because VIN does not qualify.

13 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 03/07/2009

I purchased new, a 2001 Acura Cls, and gave it to my mother, about year later in 2002. At only 39,620 miles the transmission started to severely slip, and required towing to the Acura dealership, where, at a cost of $5,076. 66, required replacing the complete transmission and ecu. The dealer service department associate could explain specifically what caused this damage.

14 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 03/06/2009

The transmission on my Acura Cl-s was replaced @ 66k miles under the recall. I just took the car in for service (@132k miles) and they informed me it needs the transmission replaced again. I have to buy tires and brakes as often as transmissions at this rate.

15 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

Transmission does not shift from first to second gear resulting in high rpm status.

16 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 10/03/2008

Automatic transmission started missing shifts into 3rd gear, especially when under load, like going up hill. Two weeks later it won't shift into 3rd at all. Dealer says I need to have transmission replaced. Only 62,000 miles on a very well taken care of car. Honda agreed to replace some of these model year transmissions, but not all of them. Anecdotal information, but in speaking with a non Acura related transmission shop, he knew exactly how my problem manifested itself, and what it was, with only the model year. Clearly Honda should be forced to extend their service coverage to at least the balance of the 2003 model year if not beyond.

17 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 09/29/2008

When we heard about the recall, we took the car in to have the recall problem fixed. We took it to sierra Acura on main street in alhambra, California. We were told by the service department to bring the car back when the recall problem starts giving us trouble. So we waited until it gave us trouble which was around Monday September 29, 2008. We tried to take it to sierra Acura yesterday around 3:30 p. M. We were told to bring it back the next day because they were Closing in about an hour. We could have gotten the car there in about 15 minutes, and were willing to leave it there until it was fixed. So, we were very disgusted with the service there and took it to another dealer thomas Acura in covina. They told my son who is the driver of the car that he would have to pay 75% of the cost which is about $4,000. 00 because he brought it in past the due date of the recall. First of all, we never got a recall notice so we didn't know when the date of the recall notice was. We heard about the recall by word of mouth. Second, when we did take the car in a timely manner, they told us to bring it back when the transmission starts giving us trouble. Third now we have to pay 75% of the cost because of the error of the Acura service department .

18 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 09/17/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Acura 3. 2cl. On September 17, 2008, while driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle lost power and stopped. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that a new transmission was needed. The contact wanted a second opinion and had the vehicle towed to another mechanic. A diagnostic was performed and the second mechanic confirmed that a new transmission was needed. The manufacturer stated that her vehicle was included in NHTSA campaign id number 04v176000 (power train:automatic transmission); however, they would not cover the cost of the repairs due to the mileage that was on the vehicle. The contact was also informed that repairs were made to the vehicle on September 27, 2004. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 124,000.

19 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 08/26/2008

No events. Without any warning, at 60 mph steady speed my 2001 Acura Cl's automatic transmission seized up, causing my car to dramatically lose speed, and almost caused the car behind me to rear-end me. The Acura dealer has said that since it has 130,000 miles on it they will not repair it. Acura Claims it was recalled in 2004 for this problem, and they "fixed" it that year. I have been unaware of this defect until now, since I purchased it in 2005. I believe this problem should be made public, and to warn the hundreds of second-hand owners like myself who do not know how potentially dangerous this vehicle is. I can only thank god I had my seat belt on, or would have gone through the windshield. You have no idea how terrifying it is to have a car do that with no warning whatsoever. This defective transmission will now cost me over $3,000 to fix, even though I have had the transmission serviced regularly.

20 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Acura CL

Failure Date: 07/04/2008

I purchased an 99 Acura Cl in 2003 from the Acura dealer in charlotte, north carolina, before I had 100,000. 00 miles on this car. They have replaced the transmission 3 times. Now I am at 196,000. 00 and having transmission problems. The dealership stated that they would not repair my car because they did not keep up with the servicing of my car. It shouldn't matter where I get the service as long as I am getting the car service. It's going to cost me over 3000. 00 to get this car fix. This can not be so because no one should replace a transmission this many times.

21 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2000 Acura CL

Failure Date: 11/21/2007

In October 2007, I began to have problems with my 2000 Acura 3. 2tl. The car jerked when I put it in reverse and as it changed gears it started shaking. I had it checked during an oil change that month and was told it was ok. The problem continued an din November I took it in to mcdaniels Acura in columbia, SC. I was told there was a recall on the transmissions and that the recall expired due to vehicle mileage. I informed the general manager I did not receive recall information. After contacting the Acura corporation, I was informed since I was not the original owner, I did not receive the information. I am the registered owner and information was not sent to me. Now, I am facing $4000 in repairs on a vehicle I am still paying on.

22 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 11/14/2007

1) rough shifting. 2) gear would not change, erratic shifting, and then car would not move. 3) 01-some 03 Cls had many problem w/ transmission so transmission warranty was extended to 109k but I have an 03 that is not covered and transmission blew. Dealer paid for the transmission but I had to pay for labor.

23 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Acura CL

Failure Date: 11/10/2007

Acura is knowingly putting defective transmissions in these cars. When my first trans went out, I was doing 50 mph on lake shore dr. And if I weren't wearing my seatbelt, I would've gone through the windshield. They admitted that they knew all these trans were bad and replaced the 1st one @ 103,000 miles and said they would "good will" these trans as long as im the original owner. My husband was a master tech. Mechanic at Acura for 10 yrs. And said they never came out with a good trans. For these cars. They just keep rebuilding them and replacing them when they go out! now my replacement trans is going out @ 30,000 less miles than the 1st and they refuse to replace it without me paying for it! pay for another bad transmission? they wrote on my car work order "test drove vehicle found trans slipping - customer advised of trans operation, not recommended to drive vehicle!" they put me back on the street with their unsafe transmission. It's not right that they are putting 'accidents waiting to happen' on the streets. Is it cheaper for them to pay for peoples deaths than to take all these vehicles off the street? hondas biggest settlement cannot replace somebody's loved one. There has to be justice somewhere. Please help save someone's life, thank you. .

24 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Acura CL

Failure Date: 09/07/2007

My transmission has been determined by an Acura authorized dealer/service as damaged and requires replacement. It was determined to be unsafe for use on the road as the transmission erratically downshifts. The Acura service / dealer in bridgewater notified me that the transmission / vehicle was not covered on the recall transmission repair/replacement. I have to cover and pay the entire transmission replacement cost of $2,300. In researching the web, the 1999 Acura Cl 3. 0 transmission is the same as the transmissions recalled by Acura for years' 2000, 2001, 2002.

25 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Acura CL

27 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 12/16/2006

The contact owns a 2001 Acura 3. 2cl. While driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle intermittently down-shifts. A technician stated that the failure occurs between the second and third gear. 28 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Acura CL

Failure Date: 08/25/2006

Had to replace transmission after 89,000 miles.

29 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Acura CL

Failure Date: 04/15/2006

Started to notice a slight slipping of automatic transmission when going from low to high gears. Was infrequent but noticeable. Recently, transmission also began to emit a low and steady humming or droning sound. Alerted my mechanic and had transmission flushed/serviced. He informed me that fluid was very burnt and appeared to him that transmission will require a rebuild (mechanics is Honda/Acura certified). I recently set an appointment to have transmission rebuilt. However, I was urged by a friend to look into this further, as the low mileage on my vehicle does not necessarily warrant a transmission rebuild. I believe the automatic transmission system to be defective.

30 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1997 Acura CL

Failure Date: 12/17/2005

My transmission on my Acura 3. 0 failed after only 68,000 miles. The dealer and Acura headquarters refuse to handle the issue.

31 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 07/22/2005

Consumer has a 2001 Honda Acura 3. 2 Cl the recall was for an inspection of transmission 2nd gear. The more miles heat build up may cause gear tooth chipping and may cause gear failure and cause the transmission to lockup. The dealer replaced the transmission in the vehicle with a remanufactured transmission and 40000 miles later the transmission locked up. The consumer says this is the same problem he experienced before. Consumer says that he had a hard time with the manufacturer and he feels that they failed to remedy the defect in the vehicle with out charge, because he will have to pay for labor and a loaner vehicle to have his vehicle repaired.

32 Automatic Transmission problem of the 1999 Acura CL

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

Early 2005, my vehicle had difficulty shifting from low gears to high. This event occurred for a few months recurring from time to time. Finally, my vehicle could no longer be driven safely due to the inability of the transmission shifting properly. I had to have the transmission replaced. Recently, it was brought to my attention that similar incidences have lead to a recall of Acuras under recall # pe0208. My concern is that the 1999 series may have been overlooked for that or a similar recall initiative.

33 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

I purchased a 2001 Acura Cl in June of 2003. Within the last 18 months, I have replaced the transmission 4 times. There is currently a recall of this vehicle for transmission issues, and as a result, the transmission has been replaced at no cost to me. However, I am tired of taking the care in every 7500 miles for both service and a new transmission. It is obvious that there is a serious problem, and instead of continuously getting the car fixed, I would like to just get rid of it altogether and save myself the headache. I have contacted Acura directly, and I hope to get this issue resolved ASAP.

34 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Acura CL

Failure Date: 06/26/2005

Acura 3. 2 Cl type s has had 4 total failures all related to transmitions problems. The failures occured while driving in the insterstate highway at 65mph. Dealearship has replaced four transmitions causing time loss at work and placing my self in a hazardous situations while the failures occured leaving standed in unsecure areas and far away from any kind of help or assistance even in areas with cell phone coverage. The date of the incident registered below is the last one.

35 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Acura CL

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

Transmission problem: erratic shifting, hard downshifts, shifts from 5th gear into 2nd gear at high speed: Close-to-death experience on the highway!! this has happened 3 months after the recall service was done concluding nothing wrong. From my research I have found that the recall - "band-aid fix" does not fix whats actually wrong with the transmission because it is a trick to make consumers think that the car is fine. The recall was put out but does not work!! this matter should be looked into properly and thuroughly again. I do not wish to injure or kill myself or others because my car is poorly designed. My car is out of warranty and will not be covered under recall since it was already provided. Furthermore, the symptoms of my problem are different than the recall symptoms. The Honda motor CO. Knows very well that all these symptoms are combined but does not want to recall the correct parts because it would cost too much and cover too many vehicles. Right now my choices are very limited but expensive: replace whole transmission with few other parts. Many consumers' transmissions fail multiple times so there is no permanent fix as the company Claims with the recall service and I'm sure this is not the first complain. Please look into the problem again and make them issue a real solution to this problem or refer me somewhere that I could get help resolving this matter.
