Body Problems of Acura RDX - part 1

On March 5, 2026 my son and I were sitting parked in my 2019 Rdx a-spec SUV when we heard a loud cracking sound and my rear windshield shattered. We got out of the car and did not see anyone or anything nearby that could have impacted the windshield. There were no objects on the ground or inside of the car that could have caused the break. I called 911 to get emergency assistance because at the time we weren't sure whether it was possible that someone had thrown or shot something at our car. I also called my insurance company while onsite to file a claim. The police arrived and could not find any sign of foul play but noted a comment report to document the incident. We had to drive the car home with shattered glass falling into our car as we drove very slowly home. We were shaken and very confused as to why and how this could have happened. When I got home I googled, "rdx" and before I could type in anything else, hundreds of customer complaints including news coverage of the very same incident I experienced showed up. Acura/Honda knew about this and had issued service bulletin (22-014) on 10/28/2022 but never directly informed customers that this could happen. There is no recall, no light indicators, no warning. I was in the car with my son. We could have been on the highway or anywhere when our windshield shattered. I contacted an Acura dealership and they indicated that I was responsible as the customer. Now, I am having to pay $500 out of pocket in order for my insurance to cover the damages. This may also cause my insurance rate to increase. This is a terrible safety issue and Honda/Acura failed to inform customers and take responsibility for a known, well-documented safety issue.

Component or system failed: rear liftgate glass (rear window) shattered unexpectedly. The glass is available for inspection upon request. Description of incident: vehicle is a 2019 Acura Rdx located in massachusetts. I started the car from my remote. While the vehicle was parked, I closed the driver-side door and the rear liftgate glass immediately shattered without impact. There were no prior cracks, chips, or visible damage to the glass. The shattering appeared spontaneous and was not caused by an object strike. Safety risk: the sudden shattering of the rear glass created a safety hazard due to flying glass fragments inside and around the vehicle. If this had occurred while driving, it could have caused driver distraction, loss of visibility, or potential injury to occupants or nearby individuals. The failure appears to be spontaneous and without warning, which raises safety concerns. Problem reproduced or confirmed: unknown. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer at the time of this report. However, similar incidents involving 2019 Acura Rdx rear glass shattering have been widely reported by other owners. Inspections conducted: the vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer. Insurance will be inspecting the damage as part of a comprehensive glass claim. No police report was filed as there was no collision or vandalism suspected. Warning lamps or prior symptoms: no warning lamps, messages, or symptoms appeared prior to the failure. There were no visible cracks or damage before the glass shattered. Additional notes: the failure occurred immediately after closing the driver-side door. No rear defroster warning or malfunction was observed prior to the incident.

Sudden breaking of panoramic glass on sun/moon roof. I believe this is related to the clicking noise that is caused by the improper bolting in this model. There is an active service bulletin for the improper bolting/flexing in the panoramic glass. I called the Acura dealership where this was bought and they didn’t acknowledge that. I had my two children, toddler and infant, in the back. They like the panoramic open. If this broke on top of them this would be a very serious injury.

The rear hatch glass exploded when the driver door was shut. Was parked outside out house in our driveway. Not driven all day.

1:sunroof frame shifts creating a popping noise during certain driving conditions. Turning and going up a drive way. 2:distracting for the driver and passengers stay concerned the whole time. 3:there is a service bulletin with Acura 23-004 but no recall to the matter. 4: unknown 5:no warning lamps.

Rear window randomly exploded while sitting in the driveway. Last driven 12+ hours prior. Completely shattered with no impact.

The vehicle was parked overnight safely as always outside of my home. The rear tailgate windshield shattered without warning, incident or contact. The vehicle was inspected and the windshield was replaced by an automobile window company in maryland.

The sunroof of the vehicle spontaneously shattered while driver was driving on I-5 south in orange county, California. Driver’s safety was compromised due to the potential for glass to have entered the vehicle while vehicle was in motion. The safety of other motorists on the road was also compromised, as pieces of glass appear to have flown off the sunroof into traffic. The sudden shattering was also extremely loud and startling, which was also a safety hazard because driver could have panicked and lost control of vehicle. After calling to report the incident to Acura, owner was advised the vehicle’s sunroof has not been recalled nor is it under an extended warranty, despite evidence of a class action lawsuit against american Honda motor CO. , inc. For related incidents in 2015 to 2021 vehicles. Per the lawsuit, which is a case out of California, the alleged defect in 2015 to 2021 model year Honda and Acura vehicles, referred to in the complaint as the “class vehicles,” puts drivers and their passengers in “serious danger,” as the sunroof explosions can cause “shards of glass to fly through their vehicles, sometimes while driving at high speeds,” and “the loud explosion and flying glass distract drivers and create a hazard to the people in the class vehicles and those around them. ” the complaint alleges that the sunroofs in Honda and Acura vehicles are made with tempered glass that, because of the pressure created during the tempering process, has been known to “explode suddenly” if the outer layer is compromised. The lawsuit also claims Honda’s use of thin tempered glass for its sunroofs is “substandard, dangerous, and inadequate” given the material’s propensity to shatter or explode.

While driving over a bump or curb to enter parking lot, I hear a popping noise coming from the sunroof at the front passenger and rear driver side of the car.

Got into my car started it and the back window burst I might add it was not to cold out but the rear window wiper was on due to the rain sensor.

This is the second time my rear windshield spontaneously blew out in cold weather after using the rear deicer. This is a known problem pursuant to Acura service bulletin 22-014. Instead of replacing the windshield with the. Oem, the component should be redesigned. And recalled.

Vehicles rear windshield shatters on its own without any impact. It's is a known problem for the manufacture cause they have come out with a service bulletin. It's a safety issue due to when driving or even staying stationary rear windshield will break. All 2019 and 2020 have this problem. Windshield shatters due to manufacturer making poor quality product and does not want to make it a recall even tho it's a safety concern.

My CA was parked and the rear glass just shattered. Nothing hit it vehicle was just parked in my driveway and the glass made a popping noise when to check it and it was broken.

Back windshield shattered out of no where. This is a common problem for this specific model.

Spontaneous rear window shattering twice. Danger to the driver and passengers.

The rear window spontaneously exploded while parked in our garage this is the second time this has happened in two years.

The rear window shattered on its own!!!. I had it replaced but not all the glass debris could be removed and it is trapped inside the trunk door (lift gate), unreachable, because the way the door was manufactured. The body shop says the entire lift gate needs to be replaced. How is it possible that the customers have the pay for the repairs of this manufacturing defect! every time I open the lift gate I can hear a lot of glass moving inside. I will never be able to resale this car if this is not fixed. As it stands, many Acura Rdx owner have this huge issue!!!!.

My car was parked in a garage untouched for hours I turned on remote start and came back to find my back window completely shattered. I looked inside the vehicle to see maybe if someone through a rock or anything but I found nothing and the way it cracked shows it came from the defroster. I have seen multiple complaints about Acura Rdxs back window randomly shattering after using the rear defroster on the vehicle. I called an Acura service shop and they confirmed this is a re occurring issue but refused to compensate or assist in fixing the matter. They claimed my warranty ended or there is no recalls for my vehicle but this is a known issues with Acura Rdxs.

While we were driving we heard what sounded like a shot, when we pulled over we noticed the rear window was shattered, and noticed nothing had gone through or hit it after inspecting it. My daughter was scared to stay in the car so we had to call someone to pick them up and give them a ride. The dealership told me my vehicle is no longer under warranty only drivetrain warranty and that it was not their problem to call my insurance is what I got told. Hundreds of others have had the same issue after doing some research online. There was no warning or cracking of any kind before this. Incident happened on 11/17/24 at 7:45pm.

I came outside my house at 10am to go to church, to see that my back windshield was completely shattered. The vehicle had been parked and backed into the driveway for more than 10 hours in front of my house and it was not currently running. There's no way a rock or ball or anything could have hit the windshield and there were no signs of someone trying to break in or forced entry into the vehicle which has been verified with ring doorbell camera. The rear windshield had spontaneously and unexpectedly shattered.

The rear windshield shattered and the reason was unknown, vehicle was parked in a location and in a position where it couldn’t have gotten hit by something passing by. After replacing the windshield, there is still shattered glass inside the liftgate panels and are unreachable.

The sunroof spontaneously shattered while driving the car. No other vehicles were around and no debris caused the sunroof to shatter. Glass blew in to oncoming traffic and into the car while it was being operated, which posed a risk to myself and other drivers. Upon further investigation, this is a know issue by Honda/Acura and a class action lawsuit has been file, yet the company is unwilling to make repairs to effected cars. There were no warnings etc prior to the sunroof shattering. The car was taken directly to the dealership for repairs and photos are available.

The panoramic sunroof makes popping sounds when I drive the car up or down ramps or curbs at angles that twists the chassis. This could potentially break and shatter the glass on top of the driver and passengers or worse dislodge from the mounting bracket and fall into the cabin of the car.

There is rust on all door hinges and the vehicle is still under warranty. Crown Acura in clearwater, florida said they will not fix it under warranty. Outside sources caused the rust on the inside of the door hinges was their statement.

Our 2020 Acura Rdx windshield spontaneously shattered. After reading a bulletin that this is a common issue we contacted our local dealer. We were told it was not a recall and was not covered. We contacted Acura to speak about the issue and were told we could take it to a dealer to determine if a small portion would be covered but even that was not a guarantee. This is an obvious issue with this vehicle.

Suddenly back glass shattered by its own . Just in cold weather . While kid was in back seat . . No reason it happened by its own no gurantee if we replace it won’t happen again . I saw others also complaining same on Acura Rdx 2019 same model.

After my shift at work. I got in my 2019 Acura Rdx and closed the door. Right when the door closed the rear tailgate glass shattered. Leaving a big hole in the glass on my drive home. While it kept breaking into thousands of smaller pieces while driving home. Mind you I live in chicago and the temperature was 20 degrees fahrenheit outside. Called my insurance company to file a claim. Had the rear glass replaced by safelite after a week and half. But the tiny pieces that broke off fell inside the tailgate and now when I raise the tailgate/hit a bump/ turn the vehicle I hear the pieces of glass that fell inside the tailgate moving around. I was told there was no way to remove this.
