Vehicle Speed Control Problems of Acura RDX - part 1

I was going from an on ramp to the hwy traveling approx 55 mph and my Rdx lost power, the steering wheel either locked up or lost all power steering and warning beeps started and so did lights and brake warning systems. I was able to get it a few feet onto the shoulder of the hwy. After calling roadside assistance and turning the car off and back on I was able to get the steering wheel to turn freely again and pulled my car further off the hwy to safeth warning messages that popped up brake system - "brake system problem. Brake performance may be reduces see your dealer lane keeping assist system problem- see your dealer collision mitigation braking system problem- see your dealer low spped braking control problem. In googling this issue its a known issue on 2025 Rdx and had caused some accidents. Some people have had it happen to them in 2 2025 Rdx's since Jan and their loaner did it to them. There needs to be a reall on this.

Drove into parking lot and as I was pulling into the parking spot next to the building, the vehicle started to surge forward as if I had my foot on the gas instead of the brake. The sudden surge caused the vehicle to plow into a brick building causing about $10k damage to the vehicle and $5k to the building. This was not the first time this sudden surging occurred. It happened at least 3 times previously, and one time since. Fortunately, the other occurrences did not lead to any damages, but just some anxious moments. I took the vehicle to the dealership to get checked out after the last occurrence, but they said they couldn't duplicate it. I thought it might be some sort of "unknown" problem, until I started reading on facebook and other internet websites of other people having the same scary "surging" engine issues. I believe there's more to it now, and an investigation is warranted.

I am writing to report a concerning issue with my Acura Rdx 2017, which I believe poses a significant safety risk and requires immediate attention from your organization. About five days ago, while driving at approximately 20 mph, my vehicle began emitting loud, thunderous sounds, accompanied by intense vibrations that shook the entire car. Additionally, it seemed to struggle when shifting gears, particularly into second or third gear. Despite my careful and gradual acceleration, the car exhibited signs of a malfunction within its transmission system. Furthermore, at around 35 mph, the engine suddenly revved to over 3000 rpm, causing the vehicle to accelerate without any input from me. This acceleration occurred even though my foot was not on the gas pedal, making the car difficult to control and putting me at risk of colliding with other vehicles or objects. The unpredictability of these incidents is deeply alarming and could lead to serious accidents if not addressed promptly. I purchased this vehicle in December 2023 and have maintained it according to the manufacturer's recommendations. However, when I inquired about the timing belt at the dealership, I was assured that it had passed inspection. Despite this, the recent malfunctions suggest a more serious underlying issue that needs immediate attention. Crucially, there were no warning lights, messages, or other indications of a problem prior to these incidents, underscoring the sudden and unexpected nature of the issue. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter urgently and thoroughly. I request that you initiate a recall of affected vehicles and implement necessary repairs to address the identified defects. Swift action is essential to ensure the safety of all motorists who may be affected by this issue.

On 2-10-2024 I was driving the 2021 Rdx sh-awd on I-40w in TN with my daughter in the passenger's seat. It was raining. After about 2 hours of driving, at about 3:00 pm, I took a break at a rest area near buffalo valley. After ~20-min rest, I restarted the car and tried to merge back onto I-40w. I was accelerating towards the speed limit of 70 m/h, but suddenly, at about 65m/h, I felt the car losing power. I could not speed up anymore: the car did not respond to the gas pedal and the speed dropped to about 40m/h. The orange engine light started to flash on the dashboard. A truck nearly piled on me from behind. Cars and trucks from behind had to switch lanes quickly to avoid collision. I was able to pull over to the shoulder and stopped with my emergency light on. I turned off the engine for about 10 minutes, then I restarted the car again and got back on the road. This time, everything seemed normal, but I was so scared and worried the car might suddenly not respond again. Fortunately, I was able to get home eventually without any additional problems.

My car lurches when I put it into gear, drive or reverse. When a red light turns green and I put my foot on the accelerator the car will lurch forward. I was in my garage when I started my car and my foot was firmly on the brake as I shifted into reverse with my foot on the brake the car violently lurched backwards.

Upon entering the cross driveway at a mall parking lot, car suddenly veered right, accelerating & unresponsive to stepping on brakes pedal, steering wheel locked, gear buttons did not respond, seat belts tightened, but air bags did not deploy. Speed was slowed when car ran over a large rock and crashed into the wall of small store front. I, the driver, have not been in any accidents, had not taken any medication of any sort.

When I am stopped the vehicle routinely lurches as I touch the gas. I’ve complained to the dealer about it and they can’t reproduce the problem. It does lurch for my husband also. It hasn’t caused any injuries or damage, so far.

While accelerating on the highway the vehicle lost power. Pressing the gas did nothing. Engine light blinked.

On 12/22/22, I was driving in a 2021 Rdx sh-awd with my pregnant wife and 2 year old son from media PA to pittsburgh PA . It was rainy and 35-40 degrees f the whole drive. Approximately 4 hours into the drive we stopped at a rest stop on the PA turnpike to get gas. While attempting to merge back onto the turnpike from the service road to the right of the turnpike, a truck was coming up behind me in the right hand lane of the turnpike. I was traveling approximately 40mph on the service road, so I went to accelerate to safely complete the merge in front of the truck. Near the end of my acceleration sequence (I estimate I had gotten to approx 65mph) my car went into “limp mode”. I felt an unexpected and immediate loss of power and my check engine light/“mil” began flashing yellow. I was luckily able to barely avoid a collision with the truck that was approaching. After the light started flashing I was unable to turn the knob to switch drive modes (it was in snow mode at the time this all happened). I was unable to do anything but attempt to drive to safety with severe power loss. I was able to coast my car with minimal accelerator response to the next exit off the turnpike and into a motel parking lot. I shut down the car and then turned it back on. When I turned it back on, the mil light was no longer flashing and I had normal power restored to the vehicle, but interestingly the auto stop/start feature no longer worked. I was able to drive the remainder of the way to pittsburgh without any further loss in power, though I was anxious the entire drive considering the major malfunction I had just experienced while attempting a merge at highway speeds. The vehicle only had approx 10,500 miles on it at the time of the incident. The vehicle is currently at the dealership being diagnosed. A case has also been opened directly with Acura/Honda.

On September 6, 2022, at 7:45 am I was traveling from my home to work in my 2020 Acura Rdx. As I was merging on to an interstate in heavy, high-speed traffic, my Rdx suddenly lost power and started to decelerate with absolutely no warning at all as high-speed traffic was approaching from behind. My vehicle decelerated to a speed of about 20mph on an interstate in the midst of heavy, high-speed traffic. The malfunction indication light began flashing in the instrument panel. I was able to drive at slow speed of about 15-20 mph, with 4-way lights flashing, until I could exit the interstate. I turned the car off for a few minutes and then was able to proceed. This created an extremely dangerous situation.

5 different occasions where the car enabled the emergency braking system for collision when there were no possibility of collision. This has occurred twice on the freeway, where all of a sudden, the vehicle slams down on the break, coming to a screeching halt. No vehicle or other object in front, side or back of vehicle that should cause this. The other instances happened on city roads and similar to the freeway instances. Hard braking for no reason, jolting me and passengers forward and causing vehicles behind me to not understand why we stopped randly and took so long to get going forward again as the emergency system doesn’t have a quick override.

On July 24, 2022, while driving from champaign-urbana, illinois back to our home in lisle, IL, in a heavy rainstorm, our Rdx suddenly started flashing the engine light and lost power on interstate 57. We were fortunate to be able to maneuver it to the side of the road, and off the nearby ramp at bradley, IL. We ‘googled’ the circumstances on our iphone, to learn that this is considered a serious, potentially life-threatening situation, and that Acura recommended immediate service bulletin 20-053, dated may 25, 2021, states the symptom as “the mil is flashing with loss of power. ” it indicates “corrective action” for the Rdx as “update the pgm-fi and replace the intercooler, the intercooler outlet pipe assembly and the intercooler outlet hose. ” affected vehicles include “all” 2019-2020 Rdx models. ” despite the service bulletin that was issued, many Rdx owners, noted the same response from their local Acura dealer. They note that the dealers “played dumb,” claim they could not locate a service code, nor “replicate the conditions and response” in the shop…. Precisely my experience! in fact, the service receipt, indicates the car was driven less than one mile, hardly sufficient to replicate conditions. Acura client relations has refused to assist. I contacted the ceo jon ikeda but his office has not responded. I fear driving the car in wet conditions.

My experience is in the attached file. My concern is Honda (Acura, same company) issued a service bulletin with VIN ranges (which my vehicle falls in) and yet there is no diagnostic error code to show it happened to the car, repair persons/dealerships can and have denied fixing anything because they can’t diagnose it and it’s in the owner’s manual directing the owner to take it to the dealer for repair. That’s a big disconnect. Luckily, I was able to dig to find the bulletin and provided it to my dealer with the description of what happened and they’re going to fix it. But that doesn’t help anyone else. You really should put pressure on american Honda motor to issue a recall and do it right.

The contact called on behalf of her mother who was the owner of a 2017 Acura Rdx. The contact was reporting the complaint based on verbal information she received from a police officer. The contact stated her mother was driving out of her driveway when she drove into an embankment and the vehicle was stuck. The contact stated the police officers informed her, that the cause of the fire was due to the driver attempting to drive out of the embankment and reverse out of the embankment several times. The vehicle had caught on fire and the driver passed away in the vehicle as she was unable to exit the vehicle. The fire department was called and extinguished the fire. The contact stated she was awaiting the police department and fire department report. The vehicle was towed to the police towing lot. The failure caused has not been determined by the insurance company, independent mechanic, or dealer. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

One week ago 6-20-22, my car started to ‘chug’ and slow down as I was accelerating up a hill on a highway. It was almost as if my car was losing power. When this happened about 10 warnings signs came up on my dash. I drove it directly to the dealership. They replaced my oil saying the pressure was low. All was well for the day after 6-21 when driving it home from dealership. On 6-22 I went to merge onto a local highway from a stop sign with traffic coming at 55-65 mph. My car would not accelerate over 25 and I was unable to pull of. Thankfully I pulled off onto the next exit. I could have easily been rear ended and hurt. This issue since will go away if I shut off my car and turn it back on, but not every time. It is still chugging and losing power when I drive and all the errors on the dashboard are coming up randomly. I drive a lot everyday for work and this problem is really scaring me knowing I or others could get hurt.

The car kept stalling while I was trying to accelerate on the highway. I pulled over and turned it off and the problem resolved itself.

11/6/mid way home from a trip from washington to connecticut on the new jersey turnpike in the left-hand lane the car lost all ability to accelerate. Concurrently the engine like came on and multiple warning signals came on regarding traction control, breaking, and steering. One can imagine how unsettling that could be but at that moment. Being in the left lane it was apparent I needed to get off the road. With cars traveling at 65+ mph and my car decelerating continuously changing lanes was nearly catastrophic and the last lane I needed to move over to nearly resulted in a multi car accident 11/8/2021 I was contacted by the service manager at the towed to Acura dealer. They informed me that the evaluation determined a need for an “intercooler" this breakdown of my car with less than 20,000 miles on it was under warranty . More importantly, my understanding of this problem is that the car is engineered to power down under these circumstances to protect the engine and or transmission. I would have imagined that when a warning like comes on it would not result in an instantaneous power down action. Put quite simply it appears the car was more interested in protecting itself than the occupants. This is egregious. Acura has failed to address my concern or help now about 1 month out.

Last week I was driving the 2020 Acura Rdx on the massachusetts turnpike during very wet weather. Three hours into a planned four hour drive, while accelerating up a hill, the car power cut out. Engine was running, but no oomph. Check engine light, and other lights, flashing on dashboard. Car kept slowing, and there was no place to pull over at that point on the pike (mile 68). Finally, car made it to crest of hill (at that point going 15 miles an hour in the right hand lane and still slowing), and a pull out spot appeared. Pulled over, but a very harrowing experience. Had the car towed to the closest Acura dealer (this was clearly an issue that would be covered by warranty. . . ). They checked out car, and said that they had seen the same problem before, and that fix was to replace the "intercooler kit", which required a part that was on a long back order. Researching other threads, I find that this has happened to others. . . And that a "fix" can be to turn off the car, and restart after a few minutes. Car seems to drive fine again. . . In any case, I later moved the car to the dealer where we bought it, and they had the part in stock. Apparently, when it is very wet and a driver accelerates hard, the old part lets some water enter the turbo charger, at which point the car goes into "limp" mode. Apparently, Acura has an outstanding service bulletin on this issue. The reason for my filing. . . I think that this a recall issue. I love the car, and am glad that it is fixed (at least, I hope it is!), but this is a very bad problem and should not happen. Any questions, please let me know. But I would encourage Acura to do a formal recall. . .

I own a 2021 Acura Rdx that was purchased new in February 2021. In the 11,500 miles I have driven it, there have been zero problems until yesterday. However, yesterday, when driving on an interstate highway at 70 mph, in the rain, while passing a semi truck, my Acura Rdx suddenly went into limp mode and the check engine light began flashing. After pulling over to the berm, and driving in the limp mode to the next exit, I turned the engine off. When I turned the engine back on it functioned normally and the check engine light went out. The engine has functioned normally for the approximately 100 miles I have driven since that time. Since there is no problem now, I have not taken the vehicle to the dealer to be checked since I felt that they would find nothing. When looking up this problem I found that mine is not an isolated case, and this same thing has happened to other Acura Rdx owners. For that reason I am reporting the problem. I have also written to Acura to tell them of the problem. This was a very scary situation to have the engine suddenly, and without warning, go into limp mode while on a busy interstate highway. Fortunately, in this case I was able to safely get to the berm of the road, but that might not always be possible. I have no idea when this might happen again, which is also scary. It is also very strange that by turning the engine off and then back on the problem disappeared. If requested, I would be happy to have Acura look at my vehicle if it would help to find the root cause of this problem. Thank you for your review of this problem.

Vehicle went into limp mode while I was accelerating up to speed onto a highway crossing lanes and driving uphill. All acceleration stopped, and the vehicle quickly decelerated due to being on a steep hill. It was not raining at the time. I had moved into the leftmost lane, and luckily there was a left shoulder to pull the car onto. The check engine light came on and was flashing. I turned the car off and back on, and it started. There could have been a very bad accident.

It was mildly raining and I went to accellerate onto the highway and all a sudden without warning the car started to violently shake and stutter and the car lost all power and I was almost hit by another car because I lacked power. The vehicle then refused to accelerate and I had to dangerously glide off the highway without power and the vehicle had to be towed. Every check engine light came on. I then had the vehicle fixed and they said it was a problem with an engine coil. Three weeks later in the same situation in the mild rain the exact same problem happened again. I went to get on the highway in a mild rain the car broke down the exact same way. I am waiting for it get diagnosed again.

Failure date 4/15/21. Client driving a 2020 Acura Rdx at 75mph at night with light rain returning home on us281, south texas. Vehicle suddenly began decelerating to about 45mph, with no response through the gas pedal to maintain speed. Vehicle check engine light came on and was flashing. Vehicle pulled over to off ramp and idled to a gas station that was near. . Vehicle was towed to dealer the next day. Dealer initial response was that no issue was found and attributed it to "bad gas". Vehicle owner did not accept this answer and asked dealer to search service bulletins. The next day, it was found that there had been several incidents reported on this failure mode, and the repair/replacement of pn# 19710-6b2-a01 which includes an intake intercooler kit pn# 06198-5yf-305, and lubricant pn# 08734 was the fix of this issue. The fix prevents moisture from entering the intake intercooler asm and causing the vehicle engine to decelerate into "limp mode". Note: also, vehicle pgm software was updated. .

~tl- the contact owns a 2020 accura Rdx. The contact stated while driving around 75 mph in the rain the contact had depressed on the accelrator pedal to past a semi truck the contact stated the vehilce began to lose power in the engine causing the vehilce to slow down . The check engine warning light did illuminated in the vehicle. The contact was able to move the vehicle from the far right lane to the left side of the road where the conact was able to pull the vehicle of the side of the road. The contact was able to continue to drive in a idle speed where the contact was able to get off the highway and pulled over to a gas station. The contact called a local dealer Acura of columbus (6549 whittlesey blvd, columbus, GA 31909 phone: (706) 576-6700 ) who diagnosed the failure over the phone turbo charges inter cooler system that allow moisture into the turbo charge when it rain which caused the engine to shut down. They advised the contact to slowly to drive around the the gas station once it stop raining for the vehicle. To drive correctly which the contact did which allow him to drive the vehicle. To their residence. The contact was able take vehicle to their local dealer Acura columbus (4340 w dublin granville rd, dublin, OH 43017) who replace the intercooler kit fix the failure on the vehicle and repaired the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 7,300. Vw.

My SUV has been in service over 15 times stemming from electrical issues with the dash harness, multi times for loss of power while driving, loss of infotainment systems, and piping noise coming from the speakers. The loss of power and �limp mode� has happens 3 times. Once at highway speed after an out of state trip, and twice on my way to work during humid conditions. The electric issues have happened multi times during all driving conditions. I was on my way home from work today, and I started to smell something burning. I worked my way out of the main highway when smoke started pouring out of the ac vents. A few moments later I could see flames coming out of the dash behind the infotainment screen.

On 2 occasions while accelerating from a complete stop, the vehicle would barely accelerate beyond 5 mph even while attempting to reach normal speed of 35 mph. The vehicle rpm's were at 6,000 - 7,000 indicating the accelerator was telling the engine to produce propulsion, yet the only way to correct the issue was to park, turn off the vehicle, and restart the engine. This appears to be a re-occurring issue with the transmission / drivetrain / software that has been known with Acura transmissions since 2016. Dealer could not find a fault code, drove the vehicle for over 150 miles and could not reproduce the issue. However, there are numerous complains online showing the same issue including a class action lawsuit that was filed in 2020. Yet Acura has issued no recall alert or permanent solution (confirmed by dealer). Issues with the vehicle quickly deaccelerating and entering "limp" mode have also been reported which appears to be similar in nature and root-cause being the transmission / software related issue. This problem can result in unexpected engine failure or inability to operate the vehicle in a high-risk situation such as highway driving, crossing an intersection, causing a vehicle pile-up, or worse. After 4+ years and thousands of reports of the same issue, a federal investigation should be initiated before a larger widespread even occurs similar to what happened with Toyota.

November 22, 2020 10:15 pm route 287 (in route to edison rte 1 exit). 2020 Acura Rdx a-spec - a few minutes after accelerating safely onto a merging lane (with trucks) the engine performance light starts blinking and car started to slow down almost to a roll. As the truck's headlights got closer, it managed along with several other cars to switch lanes as I turned hazard lights on and steered the car into the shoulder. I turned the car off (hazard lights still on) waited a few minutes and when I turned it back on the engine performance light was off and I was able to drive home. Acura needs to address this before something tragic happens. Car was purchased in June and was under 6700 miles when this happened. It was also serviced with maintenance b a week prior to my trip.

I was driving on the interstate at about 65 mph. It was raining. I needed to accelerate quickly in order to avoid a car that was trying to merge into my lane. When I hit the accelerator, the car cut off. This caused me to loose speed and almost have an accident. I had to restart the car to get it back into drive.

Car lost all acceleration and went into limp mode attempting to overtake someone on the freeway, accelerating from 60 to 70 mph (in a 70). I had to navigate from left lane to right shoulder across 3 lanes of traffic. Terrifying. Car was remedied after turning off for a few minutes. Of note, this was a long (3+ hour) trip in the rain. A quick search revealed a ton of other Acura owners with a similar issue� noting specifically that it doesn't generate an error code thats stored that Honda/Acura can use to troubleshoot. My car was cpo, under a week since purchase, 6,000 miles on the odometer. Crazy there isn't a recall. Very dangerous.

Car stalls while accelerating. Must turn off and restart to drive again. While entering freeway with signal, car jerks hard to correct lane transition. Car breaks hard with large distance between 2 vehicles.

While driving northbound on I-75 through the leading edge of the remnant of hurricane sally on 9/16/2020 my vehicle suddenly lost speed control and the check engine icon started flashing. I managed to safely pull off the interstate onto the shoulder and stopped the engine. After reviewing the owners manual I verified that the gas fill door was closed. Started the engine and had no icons or warnings. I then got back on the interstate but about twenty miles later the car again lost speed, 9 maintenance warnings and multiple alarm icons lit up. This time the max speed obtainable was about 20 mph. I managed to drive on the shoulder to an exit and stop. I called Acura and they had aaa send a tow truck to take car to the dealer in macon, GA. The dealer said two cylinders were not firing and numerous codes were reported. They were able to reset the computer to eliminate the alarms and take it out of "limp mode" but they could not say what caused the problem or what the permanent fix would be. My vehicle had 4314 total miles and had only been owned for less than 3 months when this occurred. This could have caused a multiple vehicle wreck resulting in injuries or deaths to my family and other motorists.

When accelerating on the expressway, the car suddenly lost propulsion without warning. The car would not maintain a speed or accelerate. After the car started to slow down, I had to coast to the shoulder of the expressway and power cycle the car. After restarting the engine and two attempts, the car would still not accelerate.

I purchased this car from a certified dealer in 2016. Multiple times, the vehicle lost its ability to accelerate and maintains its current speed. As it it became sluggish. Yesterday, on my way home from work, the engine stalled suddenly.

I had the cruise and lkas on and set to 75. I manually cancelled cruise and began to increase speed to get into another lane. While pressing the accelerator, my Rdx coasted and decelerated instead of gaining speed. I made an emergency stop (as safe as possible) and put the Rdx in park. Shifted into drive again and the vehicle started moving. When pressing the accelerator, speed would not increase and I could hear my rpms going up but you wouldn't know it by looking at the gauge. Keep in mind the malfunction light is blinking, solid, blinking, and then stops altogether (never have saw this orange light until this happened). I turned the vehicle off and back on, and drove away like it never happened and the light was gone.
