My son was driving my 2011 Audi A3 tdi to the gym at night when he called me the car would not accelerate and had a warning light come on. I told him to google it and he found out it was a glow plug indicator. I told him to continue driving it in the limp mode. The car died while moving and my son was able to coast into a parking lot. This could of been a different story on a busy interstate. I had to pick him up and had the car towed in the morning. To find out this car is notorious for catastrophic high pressure fuel pump failure and that is exactly what happened. When I say catastrophic, metal is shredded and goes into the injectors and contaminates everything that carries fuel. It is about a 7k to 8k repair. I have used nothing but low sulfur diesel. It's ridiculous a recall hasn't been issued to prevent this issue. Since this happened I have found complaints scattered throughout the internet.

High pitch noise you can hear from the fuel pump. Car stalled on me. My VIN is not apart of the current NHTSA campaign number: 15v229000. Would like to get my fuel pump replaced before it stalls or won't start again on me.
No recalls connected to VIN, despite recalls showing according to NHTSA. Org website for "2015 Audi A3" and visible complaints for issue. Issue is low pressure fuel pump failure and fuel tank. Per dealer service documentation/ receipt "faulty low pressure fuel" pump. Car at 29000 miles would have a no start or start and immediately shut off, at times run but engine power cutting out while running normally below 50 mph, sputtering. Check engine light on. Dealer first replaced high pressure fuel pump, which did not resolve issue. The replacement of low pressure fuel pump did fix the issue. Now vehicle at 33000 miles and is unable to take fuel from any gas station pump. Per nhsta. Org website, for "2015 Audi A3" there is a recall for the fuel tank. Remedy to fix issue per certified mechanic is fuel tank replacement. Per nhsta. Org website again, four recalls showing for "2015 Audi A3" of these four 1) suction pump may allow fuel into the evap system and 2) improper plating may cause fuel pump to fail are more than likely what is affecting my vehicle but not connected to my specific VIN. Current mileage of car is 33540. All physical documentation / receipts available.
Nhtsa recall 15v229000 dated 04/17/15 does not show up in Audi system, however, Volkswagen group of America, inc. Has listed it for my Audi A3. I am experiencing this defect as of January 9, 2018 with VIN #wauacgff8f1004393. I never received a recall notice. On occasion, the car will not start, or starts for a minute and shuts off with an inability to restart. After sitting for an hour or so it will start. I believe there may be a defect with the fuel pump as described in recall 15v229000. How do I get Audi to accept the recall? I have already been stranded once and needed a tow to Audi dealer who stated fuel pump was the issue, but vehicle has no recalls. I believe this to be in error and would like it resolved.
Car gas 60,000 miles on it and the high pressure fuel pump on the vehicle failed!!! as well as I cannot put gas in my car. Audi has note of both problems affecting numerous vehicles and chooses to not do anything concerning it. This is absurd!!! these vehicles are unsafe especially since the issue is a fuel issue and these cars should not be on the road like this!! do something!!!.
The contact owns a 2015 Audi A3. While driving various speeds, there was a strong fuel odor in the vehicle. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (Audi north miami, 1995 ne 142nd st, north miami, FL 33181) where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-411-9988 and stated that the VIN was not included in the recall, and asked the contact to speak to the general manager. I was at the tail end of a 400 mile trip-all freeway driving. After exiting the freeway, the car was slowly losing power. The glow plug light came on. Car stalled after 1/2 mile. I tried to restart it. It would not start. The glow plug and check engine light were on. Towed to dealership to find the high pressure fuel pump send metal into my fuel system and engine. I have just over 50,000 miles on the car. The repair is covered due to the faulty part. Audi should have to take the car back because they knew about this problem. Instead of doing a recall, they allowed the car to be driven and now my engine is affected. I tried to arrange a trade-in at a local Subaru dealership and they offered me low blue book minus $10,000. My car is not only undesirable, but worthless.
While driving at 40 mph on evening on April 16, 2015, the engine noise was noticeably more pronounced. One mile further, a flashing glow plug light illuminated followed by a dramatic loss of power (limited to 25 mph). Drove remaining short distance home at a low speed due to engine failure. After towing vehicle to Audi dealership the next morning, technician reported that the high pressure fuel pump had disintegrated and sent metal shavings throughout the entire fuel system requiring complete replacement of all fuel system components.

Loss of power at speed in traffic due to a high pressure fuel pump failure, just avoiding a serious accident. I was told it was caused by either incorrect/contaminated fuel or incorrect oil by the dealer service department. I have used only diesel fuel from national stations, have never used bio diesel and have used the correct Audi approved oil. This is apparently a wide spread engineering issue that has now dictated the complete fuel system replacement on this vehicle (and numerous others) at a sizable cost with no guarantee that it will not occur again. This is a dangerous situation that could lead to loss of life if occurring at highway speeds. Audi is not offering any solutions nor do they state on their service schedules that the pump should be checked, replaced or additives used (although if you call they strongly suggest). The tdi models need to be recalled and the effected parts replaced. This was a 2012 A3 tdi model with 71,000 miles.
During the morning rush hour commute, while traveling at 60mph on east bound highway 70 (at the 70/270 interchange) in st. Louis, mo the glow plug light started flashing and all engine power was lost. I was lucky to have been able to safely maneuver the car 4 lanes to the far right shoulder and turn on the hazard lights. Any attempt to restart the car was not successful. As the outside temperature was 3 degrees (-9 with windchill) I immediately contacted a towing service. The vehicle was towed to an independent vw/Audi shop, where they informed me that the hpfp (high pressure fuel pump) had failed and will require its replacement as well as the rest of the fuel system ($6,000-$8,000 repair estimate).

While departing a parking lot onto a primary road, the check engine light illuminated and the glow plug light began flashing; the car immediately began losing power. I returned to parking and the car was towed to an Audi dealership where they diagnosed the problem as a failed high pressure fuel pump.
Purchased used 2013 Audi A3 tdi 3 months ago. Only use diesel fuel. Driving onto i80 west when I heard/felt car hiccup, lost power. Coasted to stop sign, tried multiple time but would not start. Towed to dealer who informed me that fuel pump (hpfp) had come apart spewing metal shards into system and that entire system had to be replaced. Research showing documented failures in vw tdi (same engine) hpfp in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Is system safe?.

The vehicle started loosing power and stalling. The engine light came up. I took the car the the dealer. They diagnosed the problem as a high-pressure fuel pump that has disintegrated and damaged the entire fuel system.
My A3 2011 Audi 2. 0 tdi diesel would not start in a parking lot. Not the battery: towed to the dealer. The dealer in honolulu,hi says I need the entire fuel system ( tank, lines, 2 fuel pumps ) replaced due to 'glitter like' particles in the fuel line. Fuel is being sent for analysis. I am using the recommended brand of diesel fuel ( shell ) . Fortunately I was not moving. Several other complaints list sudden engine failure due to fuel pump failure. Also fortunately, it is still under warranty.
On my way to work my car stalled /lost power ,glow plug light went on then I couldn't restart my car. I had to tow my car to my my dealer where I bought my car. The next day they called me that they have to order alot of parts and replace entire fuel system: fuel pump, hpfp, fuel line injectors and seals and they have to clean the tank! I would like to inform you that I am the original owner and only me was using that car. I have never used anything but high quality diesel fuel from shell gas station located on dempster street in skokie,IL. I buy ulsd once a month and have all the receipts from this year ( and if necessarry from day one from my bank credit card history) beacause of this I am 100% sure that any claim that I used wrong fuel is without base. If the ultralow sulfur diesel fuel recomended by car manufactureer doesn't much specyfication this should be resolved before putting diesel car on the market. I would like to mention that all maintenance on my car was done on time at autorized dealerships. I change oil evry 4k miles instead 10k as manufacturer recomending my Audis' warranty expires next month and I hope that Audi will extened my warranty for another 4 years/50k miles!!! if not I have to get rid of my car that I was planning to keep for long time. Bad hpfp craftsmanship and design should be corrected as soon as posible if Audi/vw wants to sell diesel cars in us!.
Fuel pump imploded and sent shrapnel throughout the entire fuel system. Everything had to be replaced.
The contact owns a 2010 Audi A3. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the vehicle suddenly failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 83,000. Updated 04/29/lj.
Check vehicle (coil) light flashed. Vehicle lost power and stalled while driving on California hwy 1. Was able to coast vehicle to safe place. Dealer diagnosed failed diesel fuel pump, said pump was disintegrated. Service advisor advised that entire fuel system would be replaced by Audi.
Car started but made horrible rattling sound then died and would not start again. Car left me stranded over 60 miles from home on a Sunday night on the memorial day weekend with a young child. The car had to be towed to dealership in austin. Due to the late hour and holiday, no way to rent a car to get home, so I had to have someone come and get us. I was told by the dealership the fuel pump went out and bascially exploded sending metal fibers into engine and other systems. Given estimate of $7,500. 00 to fix the car. Service department acknoldedged that this has happened before but refused to pay for the repair since my extended warranty ended at 100,000 miles, and my car was out of warranty by 4,600 miles. It is a design flaw, that if the fuel pump goes bad in a diesel engine that it will do so much damage to the engine.
Was driving along at highway speeds when glow bulb indicator came on immediately followed by loss of power to accelerator. Was able to get off the highway after about 4 miles and car then experienced complete engine failure and was rolled to the side of the road. Engine would not turn over after two attempts to restart the engine. Car was towed to local service at Audi dealership. Service department from local dealership described the cause of engine failure was due to metal filings found throughout the fuel system caused either by fuel pump failure, or bad batch of diesel fuel.
This complaint relates to a tdi version of the Audi A3. While driving my kids to school, the car stopped dead and would not restart. On inspection by an Audi dealer it was determined that the high pressure fuel pump had failed. The pump failure caused metal particles from the pump itself to circulate in the fuel system doing catastrophic damage to the fuel system and power train. As of this date, the car has been in the shop for repair longer than two weeks with no estimated date of completion. We experienced a similar catastrophic fuel pump failure with our Audi q7 tdi in June of 2012 which required a new engine, fuel system and other parts (see odi # 10480946). According to the dealer, the reason for the delay in repairing the A3 relates to the large number of cars with similar fuel system failures which has caused a scarcity of parts. We have been told by the dealer that this same problem is happening to tdi vehicles from both Volkswagen and Audi. I am no engineer, but widespread fuel system failures seem potentially dangerous to drivers and their passengers. This problem deserves an investigation.
Driving on the freeway back to the hotel in las vegas from the west rim of the grand canyon, 100+ deg outside temp. Sudden fuel cut off/loss power for about 1 sec. Took it the dealership and the in tank fuel pump/control module failed thus cut off sending fuel to the engine. Upon picking my vehicle the service advisor commented that several cars from California with cooler temperatures have had experienced this issue. This put me and my family in a very dangerous situation and compromised our safety. I've done some research and found out problem occurred on same year has my vehicle.

High pressure fuel pump failure. Sitting at a traffic light. Second time was in may 2014 at about 40,000 miles. Both times the car stalled without warning. Audi replaced the entire fuel system from the injectors to the fuel tank. I have spoken to a few other Audi owners at the dealer who have had multiple diesel fuel pump failures on tdi cars and suvs.
