Power Train Problems of Audi A3 - part 1

I was driving on the freeway at 60 mph when I received a warning code of a transmission problem. The code said the car was driveable but I should take it in for service. About 1-2 minutes after that the car lost all power. Unfortunately I broke down in the left lane in a construction zone without a shoulder. The state patrol had to temporarily shut down all three lanes of the highway to push me out of the traffic lane I was blocking. That was unsafe for me and for the state patrol and for the tow truck driver. The car was up to date on all recommended service, had been acting normally until the moment it failed, had not given me any warnings and is only 6 years old. I had the car towed to the dealer and the dealer reported that the mechatronic unit (transmission computer) failed. Replacing the mechatronic took a week and cost $5000.

Car has 50,000 miles and vehicle has a bulletin on the vehicle from Audi, where the vehicle goes into limp mode and only shift through certain gears, rendering the vehicle, unable to drive and creating a safety hazard due to the fact that it can’t drive at highway speed and or jolt and skips gears. Code for the p173600 known issue by Audi, went into mode while merging onto freeway and a lost control of vehicle.

The contact owns a 2020 Audi A3. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the transmission malfunction warning light was displayed, and the vehicle failed to shift into reverse. The vehicle was driven to the local dealer who diagnosed that the transmission mechatronics had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 17,525.

Car throws p2884 and the internal combustion motor will not start. The issue is gone into detail here: [xxx] recommendation is swapping out mechatronic unit for the upgraded unit. Since the unit is prone to failure this really should be a recall. It happens on all cars 2016/2017 years right around 60k miles. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? power train system failed also engine light is now on how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? me and my toddler were in the vehicle when it started to jerk in bad traffic. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes, the mechanic said this is a serious problem and I should be concerned. He stated I should not drive my vehicle. It was inspected by a certified mechanic. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no, everything happen at one time.

About once per month my car will rev when the accelerator is pushed but the car will not proceed. On multiple occasions this has put the safety of myself and other road users at significant risk. This is because I'll be attempting to pull into traffic and the car will fail to proceed. This is a known issue documented by Audi in TSB #2060146/3 (https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2023/mc-10232753-0001. Pdf). I've described the issue before to my dealership but only found out about the fix myself via researching on NHTSA's site. Further, this should clearly be a recall - the vehicle does not move when it is needed. Audi should not be charging customers for this update and it should be applied to all effected vehicles. My 2023 Audi A3 with less than 3,000 miles completely stopped in the middle of a highway in saugerties, new york. 4 hours away from home. I had my dog and my little sister with me and in the freezing pouring rain we had to get out and redirect traffic/ try to find help. I called roadside assistance. They never came on Sunday may 28th and didn't call back till 10pm to say they couldn't get to us because of the 8 inch snow storm. We had no heat because the car would not turn back on. 5 ubers/ 3 lyfts and all taxis didn't come. Finally 1 uber came and took us to a nearby camp site where they allowed pitbull dogs. The next day, I had to call over 60 times to get someone to just tow my car to Audi albany. Audi albany would not drive me a loaner car because it was an hour away. With a lot of arguing Audi roadside/tow services finally allowed me to drive with the tow truck driver to Audi albany. They gave me a loaner but said I had to book another hotel night because I was not allowed to drive the loaner back to my home yet. I was stuck in saugerties NY for 2 nights 3 days. We both got sick from Sunday waiting for roadside assistance for over 5 hours.

The high voltage battery no longer charges to full. Only 7 out of 8 possible indicator bars are illuminated, the car now only shows 17-20 miles available. When I purchased the car 3 years ago, it showed 28-29 miles available. Car was at Audi dealership, got tested, Audi says it's within tolerance. I disagree, 30% to 40% of the capacity is lost so far. There are many more owners that are reporting the same issue on the facebook Audi A3 group.

I was entering the interstate and accelerating to merge with the traffic. When I reached about 70 mph the car stalled and a message appeared, transmission faulty, no reverse, safe to continue to drive. The car was drivable at a low speed and a high rpm. After having it towed to an Audi dealership, I was informed that the transmission would need to be replaced. According to the dealership, the mechatronic unit was faulty due to an unknown short in the transmission.

Transmission module! started jerking when switching gears, to not switching gears at all and this happened while driving so I was on the road stalled with no gear changes! car is inoperable, due to this and it’s still being paid for yet not able to be driven from practically the day I bought it! the manufacturer knows this is an issue and we are still out here in unsafe non gear changing cars! very dangerous.

Gearshifter sensor going off. Been told this shifter issue can cause car to shift into a different gear at any given moment. Read plenty of forums reporting the same thing.

The contact owns a 2017 Audi A3. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle started to make abnormal sounds and inadvertently downshifted. In addition, the reduced power warning light, check engine warning light, and the esp warning light illuminated. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

Fault codes: p072c00, p072b00, p174a00, p072600, p179d00, p173400. Name of codes in order above, stuck in gear 1, stuck in reverse, valve 3 in partial transmission 1, engine speed inp. Circ. , cooling oil valve, starter release from the selector level sensor system.

Consumer bought this car at 30,040 miles. The car currently sits with 89,000 miles. I have had 18 recommended service visits totaling $19,240 and then on July 15, 2022 with no pre indicators or warnings the engine dies after a 95k full multipoint inspection that consumer had 3 weeks prior. The car has an impeccable maintenace record. I did everything the dealer told me; and I still almost died on the 101 fwy going 70 mph on a conference call; the flashers didnt even work; the car dead and came to a hard halt and trucks were screeching around me with smoke coming from their tires because of the extreme hard stop and slamming on breaks, I was screaming for my life praying no one would slam into me. Metro who roams the fwy saved my life; without him I would be dead because of Audi's horribly manufatctured vehicle. It seems as though the dealer purposefully sabotages my car as a woman; I have no alternative but to fix it and now they want $27,000 more for a new engine and starter. So, in total; to drive 57,000 miles I've paid $37,000 cash for the car (I own the title)/ plus $19,240 in maintenance /repairs and now they want another 27,000 for the engine. I have no more money to give them. I recently returned my 3rd rental vehicle and I am out of funds on transportation. 2017 Audi A3 etron sportsback- engine light turned on at 50k, when scanned for errors no codes. Then around 55k miles started to stall when slowing down or at a full stop. The car must be turned off then immediately go into drive. Felt very dangerous when driving in high traffic areas and areas with many stop lights/signs. Car error say transmission malfunction first then says something about limited power. We had changed atf and filter, still had issues. Then it started to not allow to go into reverse. Issues were intermittently happening then became more constant. Finally towed to Audi dealer they are not 100% but they say a new transmission is needed. After seeing complaints of similar situation I think this should be a recall on the transmission for these cars.

Car stalled in fast moving traffic, and then lurched forward. In the stall the car behind me almost ran into me. In the lurch, I almost rear ended someone. Fortunate that both times there was no collision. Took the vehicle to Audi and the car has been diagnosed with failed mechatronic - a $4,000 repair. It was shared that this is a known issue with Audi for my model year (faulty mechatronic), and as such has been recalled in several countries, but not the us. I called Audi USA and was informed that yes it is a known issue and has been recalled in other countries, but that NHTSA has not required Audi USA to open a recall here, and so they can't help me. The contact owns a 2017 Audi A3. The contact stated that while placing the gear shifter into park, the vehicle would reverse. The "put vehicle in park immediately" warning message was displayed, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The contact was able to restart the vehicle and drive it to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer scheduled for the vehicle to be towed to an authorized dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 57,000.

Dsg transmission will abruptly shift down to first gear and would not respond in any other gear. The shift indicator in the dashboard will light up and blink and the check engine light will come on. There are no warnings before this happens and it will happen at random times. It has happen in separate occasions while traveling at different speeds. When this happens while traveling it creates a dramatic reduction on vehicle speed almost causing the vehicle traveling behind me to rear end me. Once stopped the car will only engage when put on d and will stay at a low gear causing the rpms to red line even at low speeds making it unsafe to drive due to only being able to reach 5 to 10 mph. A scan was performed and codes p1814 press. Ctrl. Valve 1 open circuit/short implausible signal, and, p1835 press. Ctrl. Valve 5 short circuit to b+. This fault is random and there is no warning or indication of when it may happen making the vehicle unsafe at any speed.

I had purchased the car back in August 17th 2021 my power steering my brakes my airbag light and the fuel system fuel leak started happening all at once water was draining out of the middle of the engine . It overheating the engine speed ball down and I automatically I instantly pulled over and turned it off and towed it home 2 days after I bought it. The engine low oil light keeps coming on, the oil has been changed already, I’ve had the car for more than 7 months I haven’t even driven it over 5000 miles yet. Audi needs to fix this. The power train is also the same, some days it works okay and some days it doesn’t. The cars struggles sometimes to even reach speeds up to 50 mph. I’ve taken this vehicle to the Audi dealship as well as to a foreign certified mechanic shop. They can’t figure out the problem. The engine light should not be coming on randomly when I have fully serviced the vehicle. Audi please fix these problems.

“transmission malfunction/no reverse gear. Okay to continue driving” comes on constantly the past 2 years now. I’ve only had this vehicle 3 years. Yes , it is available for inspection. This puts my safety and the safety of my other passengers at risk because my vehicle will abruptly slow down in fast flowing traffic and it will uncontrollably accelerate when it’s time to come to complete stops. A local mechanic used a sensor to check for faulty defects and confirmed that my transmission is having sensor issues. There has never been any warning lamps , regarding this problem. There have been no prior warning messages regarding this issue. I purchased this vehicle from Audi dealership in van nuys, CA in November 2020. I have had this vehicle less than 3 years & as of now , it has less than 35,000 miles on it.

2017 Audi A3 sedan- with around 47,000 miles -stalled out in drive thru and at a red light intersection. Twice. Almost got in 2 accidents while driving once on the highway and once on a city road. Engine light on dash was blinking. Code reader initially was reading p0300, p0301 and p0302 . . Multiple cylinder misfires. Towed car to Audi, and they did complete maintenance service. Ran codes and now all of the sudden it need a new transmission and the code is p0172 bank 1 system too rich. I noticed there was a recall for the the engine control unit (ecu) software and which can affect air / fuel mixture which makes me think that this recall was probably the cause, because po172 code can be due to the air/ fuel mixture getting too far from factory specs. My car has been at the dealership for 6 weeks, the transmission was finally replaced by Audi but they are still saying that I need a new fuel canister (there was a recall for this in 2016, and my car was manufactured in 2016 but is a 2017 model) ? I have seen several other 2017 Audi A3 sedan owner complaints having this issue with very similar problem on this website and other websites. I was under warranty until 1/25/2021, but I live 2 hours away and I was under quarantine so booked appointment locally (I think on 1/22/2021 with Volkswagen but scheduling was a week out and on appointment date their entire service department was out because of covid outbreak by that time it was too late even though I have a time and date stamped video of the car having issues.

This concerns a recall issued. Audi issued a recall/reimbursement for transmission failure. Mine failed. Car stopped in the middle of roadway. I had transmission repaired before recall was issued. I have attempeted reimbursement and am denied by Audi due to my vehicle being a theft recovery. However they have performed multiple recalls on this vehicle since I have owned it with the theft recovery title. They also performed the transmission reprogram after I had it fixed at no charge. Nhsta itself states salvage/rebuilt title is no reason for not performing a recall except in exceptional circumstances when car is no longer drivable. I am asking for help in getting Audi to honor the recall. Had I been on the highway I would have been smashed when the car shut down.

My car stald on me at a shopping center located on 32nd street north of mcdowell rd in phoenix,az. It anti locked on me and was not able to start vehicle. Due to this my car was towed from establishment to a tow garage and is still thier. Im unable to take it out due to I dont have the amount to pay it due to I am a single parent and I dont have a job at moment and I recieve unemployment and the car I still owe to car company called second chance auto sales located on 34thst and van buren in phoenix arizona and from my undrrstanding this vehicle has 3 recall issues that I wasnt aware of. My vehicle started acting wierd prior to incident but no mechanic wanted to look at it and I requested help from the company own mechanic and he too never helped me out. Transmission goes into neutral while at highway speeds. Engine rpms jump to redline while car is in neutral, then goes back into gear. Has happen several times while on the highway. Transmission also kicks down to lowest gear when coming at stop, jerking the car while braking.

Water pump / thermostat housing failure causing coolat to leak. All of my coolant was drained before low coolant light came on.

Excessive oil consumption car has 2,300 miles left to the 10k oil service check change and showing low oil. This is not normal Audi is trying to say to just top off the oil, yet excessive oil consumption will cause the car to need engine replacement earlier than it should at about 70-80-100k miles at best. There are many complaints and a class action that involved this issue but they refuse to do more than change oil and check for leaks when they know it is due to defective parts and I am under a certified warranty until October 2019.

I have an Audi A3 manufactured in 2009 presenting severe issues with the abs control module. Audi has a recall for several Audi and vw models manufactured the same year, recall number 16v913000. Audi of America was notified however declined responsibility allegedly because my vehicle was not in the specified VIN range. Although my vehicle is presenting the same symptoms as those on the recall Audi is unwilling to accept responsibility. The experience was very unnerving as the car suddenly stopped while driving and suddenly accelerated. Fortunately the cars following behind were able to stop on time avoiding a serious accident. Aside from losing control of the vehicle, the steering loses position and the speedometer stops working. Furthermore the part needed for the repair has been superseded, this is very suspicious as to why there will be a new part number to replace the original if allegedly there's no problems with mine. . . ?.

Car stalled when driving on highway! would not restart. Broken cam chain!!!!! very expensive repair at this point!!!!!.

Defective cam timing chain tensioner resulting in broken chain, missing time and bent valves! very pricey repair.

Hesitation changing gears with dsg transmission when moving from a standstill to low speed. Strange and erratic behavior on highway when shifting gears. Jerkyness in traffic and low speed gear changes. General drivability and safety issues with automatic transmission.

Twice I have experienced the random loss of power. The first time occurred on a local street, driving approximately 40 mph, and all of a sudden the vehicle stuttered and lost power. It appeared as if the vehicle was slowing down, not even coasting but slowing down considerably. I was required to pull onto a side road. I restarted the car and the issue disappeared. The second time occurred on the highway driving in the left lane at approximately 70 mph. Same issue, car stuttered and then loss power. The car's speed slowed considerable fast, from 70 to 30 in apprximately 5-7 seconds. With the inability to accelerate on a three lane highway, it was difficult to make my way to the shoulder on the right side of the road. After the stutter, you can press the gas pedal and not acceleration is experienced. I did not notice any warning lights on the instrument panel. Brought the vehicle to Audi to address this issue, and their response was "we don't see any fault codes, therefore we have no record of it happening", and sent me off with a "good luck" vehicle had apprximately 12,000 miles and 15,000 miles when issues occurred. All dealer recommended maintanence was performed.

At slow speeds & when stopped with vehicle in gear (drive or revers) the transmission jerks, clunks, feels like it's engaging and disengaging. It is dangerous - especially when stopped or parking as the vehicle will suddenly lunge forward or backward depending on the gear you are in. Unfortunately it has only resulted in damage to my own vehicle - not to another vehicle or person.
