The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. The contact stated that while driving at night the headlights would dim making it difficult to see the road at night. The contact looked at the lights and noticed that they were foggy. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they advised that he would have to replace the entire headlight assembly. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000. The current mileage was approximately 90,000. The VIN was unavailable.

42 Headlights problem

The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. The contact stated the headlights shut on and off while driving. When the failure occurred the instrument panel would display headlights dipped on the instrument. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was told the engine vibration caused the headlights to shut off. The dealer placed rubber pieces into the casing in order to minimize the vibration. The failure mileage was 43,000 and the current mileage was 62,000.

43 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

Dipped headlight on 2005 Audi A4. Had issue with left headlight which Audi USA eventually replaced, now right headlight is doing the same and Audi refuses to repair under warranty.

44 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

On my 2005. 5 Audi A4, the driver's side headlight flickers, then the illumination terminates. This is a problem that the dealership has been made aware of, however they don't find the problem during service . The illumination flickers, causing other driver's to take their attention from the road and focus on my vehicle. Additionally, as is a law in illinois, I am not able to have a vehicle equipped with flashing or strobing white or blue light, which this malfunction ultimately does. Finally, the light being out, causes the roadway to be darker and thus, more difficult to see. Illinois law requires two properly functioning headlights, which I do not have.

45 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 05/11/2010

I own an Audi A4 2. 0t 2005. 5 (b7). The driver side xenon headlights flicker intermittently and shut off. This is not a headlight bulb issue the problem is getting worse. The dealer aware of this and is not taking responsibility because of the cost. I have read of many other owners of this make and model having the same problem. This has the potential of creating an accident.

46 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2010

2005. 5 Audi A4 with xenon lights. Both headlights flicker constantly and frequently turn off. By turning lights off and on, the bulb comes back on. It is dangerous for other drivers (flashing headlights) and for me (no headlights!). It is illegal, too. Dealerships and independent mechanics have suggested a range of repairs but no one seems to be sure without spending thousands (ballasts and bulbs) on a repair which may or may not work. Has been happening this way for years.

47 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2010

The headlights on my Audi A4 flicker and then I get an error message saying that the "headlight dipped" and then it turns off. I then have to turn off the headlights and turn them back on to get the light to return. I have tried replacing many components of the headlight system and nothing has remedied the issue. The dealer does not know how to fix the problem either.

48 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2010

Headlight flickers and goes out "headlight dipped" warning.

49 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

My Audi A4 2005. 5 left headlight flickers.

50 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

I own a 2005 Audi A4 and my headlights keep flickering and then go out. Either the right one or the left one goes out. I'll get either a left dipped headlight out or right dipped headlight out warning on the dash. It's recently been the right one going out but it started with left going out most of the time. This happens more than 50% of the time and is becoming a safety issue especially on the dark roads I travel on at night. I've already hit a deer in this car once, so this issue really concerns me, and I can't seem to get it fixed. I've notices this issue is happening to many other Audi owners in the forums and blogs I've read about it. I have taken it to the dealer but the don't get an error code and have been unable to fix it. Others have replaced the bulbs but the issue will continue after a couple of months I've noticed. Something needs to be done about this issue or at in the dealership being able to detect an error code for this. They want you to take it to them when the headlight is out and that is to inconvenient and dealerships are closed at night anyway.

51 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

I will be driving my 2005. 5 Audi A4 2. 0t at night and randomly my headlights will start to flicker than completely fail. I have to turn them off than back on the problem will go away then it will happen again sometimes more often. The parts are ridiculously expensive so I"m putting off getting it fixed.

52 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Audi A4. The contact stated that while driving at 25 mph, the left front headlight on the drivers side of the vehicle flickered on and off. When he turned the vehicle off for fifteen minutes and then back on , the head lamp would function normally. The failure occurred intermittently. The contact stated that he called an authorized dealership and the dealer explained that they were aware of the problem but did not know how to correct it. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000. The current mileage was approximately 67,000.

53 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Dipped head light message with headlight flashing on and off then goes out. . . . . If you turn off the lights and put them back on it works again. Was just on an Audi form web site and I'd say hundreds of people are having the same problem with no fix from Audi. It is not safe to have your headlights going out while driving at night.

54 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

"intermittent headlight malfunction. Over the course of a four months of ownership, the left headlight has malfunctioned (turned off), with no consistent cause apparent. The specific error message that appears in the driver information screen is "left dipped headlight". This condition is both unsafe, and illegal - as many states will issue a traffic violation for driving with a non-functioning headlight. It has happened about 30 times, the headlight flickers, then goes out, but will come back on when the car is restarted or the lights are turned off and then back on, then could be fine for a while. Now that it is cold outside the problem is much worse. Haven't tried replacing parts yet since internet research indicates that many people have had the same issue and after much expense the problem just comes back or is not resolved. Still looking for the correct solution. Anecdotal evidence (conversational, and via internet owners' forums) suggests that the problem is widespread among a substantial portion of Audi's model range and years. ".

55 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

Headlights on my 2005. 5 Audi A4 equipped with xenon headlights suffer from intermittent failure. While driving headlights can begin to flicker for no apparent reason. Flickering can get worse and one headlight will go out. A warning reading either "left or right dipped headlight" appears on the car. The other headlight that did not fail typically remains on and continues to function properly although it has also failed leaving the car with no functional headlights on two occasions. When the lights are cycled off then back on the headlights turn back on and may function properly or may flicker and fail again. The problem began under warranty and was very infrequent. The problem now occurs 50% of the time while driving at night. The car has been in for repair numerous times and the problem has not been corrected. Typically while experiencing the flickering headlights I find that the safest way to drive is one failed headlight as there is then no flickering of headlights which I would assume is highly distracting to other drivers. A google search for left or right dipped headlight returns hundreds of thousands of results with numerous people having trouble getting Audi to correctly repair the problem. As the xenon headlights are optional equipment on the cars the percentage of cars with xenon bulbs and headlight problems might be fairly high.

56 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

On 2005. 5 Audi A4 with hid headlights, the headlights will flicker and then will turn off. Console will report "left/right headlight dipped". This is a common problem with the vehicle, however, Audi has taken no action to rectify the problem.

57 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

Headlights flicker and shut off during driving of the vehicle. Dipped headlight error displays, and happens to both headlights evenly.

58 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

Headlights on my 2005 Audi A4 sedan vibrate and fail, sending an error message reading "dipped headlight failure". This happens more when it's cold or wet. Various items have been replaced. Issue is intermittent. Now out of warranty. This dangerous condition is very expensive to repair, if the dealer is capable of repairing. I'm learning than many other Audi owners have this same problem.

59 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2009

I have a 2005 A4 and for the past year have been getting a 'dipped headlight' warning on my dash lcd. While driving or idling, the driver's headlight will flicker & sporadically go off. My dealership said to shut off car, wait a minute, and turn car back on. This seems to temporarily fix the situation, but when you are driving and the lights go out or flicker, it's not consive to pull over and shut your car off. The dealerships will not address this under a recall as there is still not one set up. Audi is letting their loyal consumers down by putting us at risk of harm should we be driving and the lights just go out. This is a serious issue that needs immediate attention to ensure drivers are equipped with functioning equipment.

60 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2009

The left headlight of my 2006 Audi A4 quattro has this annoying -- and dangerous -- problem: 1. The left headlight flickers 2. It then turns itself off 3. The message "left dipped headlight" appears 4. The message is changed to a sign indicating that the lightbulb has failed. If I turn the light off (note: we're talking about driving at night here) and turn it back on again, the light will become normal again, for about a few minutes and then the cycle repeats itself. This problem is intermittent. It has been occurring a lot recently with the cold weather. I can't tell for sure whether it is temperature related. My Audi dealer said that Audi knows about this problem but doesn't know how to fix it -- changing the light bulb doesn't solve the problem.

61 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2009

My certified pre owned 2005 A4 had the xenon headlights changed 3 times in 1. 5 years while under warranty. Six months after the 50,000 warranty, the lights started flickering and then dimmed and flickered while driving at night with no warning on the display. I went to the dealer and both had to be replaced at a cost of $430 for the two lights and $236 dollars installation cost. I have owned the car for ~ 1. 7 years and had five new headlights. I am not Audi's quality control department. I also was able to turn the lights off and on to get them back on and its very dangerous at night driving down the highway at 65 mph. Its is scary to say the least.

62 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Headlights constantly flicker and then go out. Turning them off then on will only bring them on for a few seconds. I have had bulb replaced no results, though very expensive. My last Audi burned to the ground due to similar defect. Couldn't imagine this would happen again. Have reached out to Audi with no response.

63 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2009

Excessive moisture in both headlights. Dealer stats that an "o" ring has failed and infers that this is a design problem. States that most headlight assemblies will clear up within about 10 minutes. Mine have so much moisture in them that I have water drips. This causes the light output to be very dim. Audi has a TSB that states the light assembly should not be replaced, and has no other repair suggestion (just live with the problem I guess). Also, it appears that this happens on the 2002-2005 models as well as the 2005. 5 - 2009 models of the A4. This is a known issue that Audi doesn't seem to want to address. Dealer has estimated the "o" ring replacement to be about $250 (for a $1 part!).

64 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2009

Headlights randomly go off while driving at night. A warning message comes up saying "left/right headlight dipped". This can be corrected by turning the lights off and then back on. This has been happening on my 2005. 5 Audi A4 quatro 3. 2 since about 24 months after purchase. I have asked multiple dealers about the problem with no resolution. Dealer said no codes are in the system.

65 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The right headlight will dip and then turn off while driving. You can turn the lights off and back on and it will temporarily solve the problem but will turn off again randomly. This problem has happened since I purchased the car cpo in late 2008 but has continued to get worse to the point where now it generally happens once every few minutes while the lights are on forcing me to continually turn the lights off and on the while driving which is very dangerous, not to mention extremely annoying to not only myself but other drivers as well.

66 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2008

The interior surface of the headlight lenses on my 2005 Audi A4 are normally 50% to 80% covered with moisture condensation and water droplets. Audi claims this is normal and refuse to warranty the lights. Audi states in technical bulletin group: 94, number: 05-04, that "the affected headlight lens surface should clear after approximately 10 minutes of light operation, although the entire surface may not clear. Audi further states that "condensation does not affect performance of light assemblies". I have found that no amount of light operation provides significant clearing of the lens surface.

67 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

I own a 2005 Audi A4. One of my headlight constantly flickers then turns off. This problem happens in any and all situations. Cold, hot, day, night, morning, evening, raining. The only solution at the moment is to turn off the headlights for about 10 seconds then restart them. This is incredibly dangerous as it is night time. The bulbs themselves are not bad. It is an electronic module problem or something of the sort. I am an ase certified mechanic so I have diagnosed the car numerous time. The headlight system is extremely expensive and the problem seems to be widespread. One can easily find hundreds of cases on the forums by searching for "Audi flickering headlight". I believe Audi needs to recall these vehicles for the safety of the all drivers on the road. Driving at night should not involve turning off your lights and restarting them to reset the computer.

68 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Front headlights flicker on either side and I get a headlight dipped error on my dash. As a result either right or left light goes out completely. Problem occurs daily and the only way of turning lights on back again is to complete turn lights of off then on again. A safety issues when driving at night and early morning.

69 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2007

When driving down the city street or highway, I would get the "dipped light" warning on my display, the headlights would flicker and then shut off. I have had this checked at teh service dept and no faults were found on more than one occasion initially. Then, the headlight bulb was replaced at one point as advised by the service dept of the dealership. However, it did not solve the problem. I noticed that it occurs more frequentyly in cold weather. The only way to temporarily resolve it during driving is to pull over, turn lights off and turn back on. Sometimes they would dip again after driving for a short distance and I would have to pull over again. I complained to aoa customer service in early 2013. I was told that unfortunately the vehicle was out of warranty and that I would receive a "courtesy partial reimbursement" of the cost of headlight bulb replacement. T I have not yet seen the check to date. The problem began within the first few years after purchase of the new vehicle and continue/repeats every winter for the last 7-8 years. I found many owners having the same problem in many online forums including this NHTSA database but it is disappointing that no recalls have been made thus far. This is a huge safety issue since the headlight would suddenly go off while driving.

70 Headlights problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

I drive a 2005. 5 Audi A4 2. 0t. When I turn my headlights on nearly half the time the right headlight shakes, then flickers, then turns off only to turn back on a few seconds later and the process continues the entire drive. Unless I turn the headlights from auto to off and then back to auto and it seems to fix the problem during this trip. I've taken the car to the Audi dealer which I purchased from and they told me they fix it, the problem now the car is out of warranty. This problem still continues to this day.
