Failure Date: 10/27/2010

I own a 2003 Audi A6 quattro 4. 2l which I bought used and have driven it since 2004. On October 27, 2010 I started smelling gas and after checking found a leak at the base of the gas tank. I checked the web and found out that there is a recall on other sub-models. I called Audi USA who contacted a dealer I chose to fix the problem. But the dealer is saying that although the recall problem exists it is due to an accident which happened 6 or 7 years ago. I think this is not fair. Thank you VIN [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

I have a 2002 Audi A6 with a 3. 0 v-6 engine. When the gas tank is filled up more than 3/4 full the gas tank on the drivers side leaks all over the place. On the internet there are many complaints explaining the same exact problem. Audi has a recall program for 2001 to 2004 Audi A6 3. 0 litre models, but tell me my car is not one that got recalled because of my vehicle code number. I explained that my problem is exactly like they explain on their website and it matches the other complaints on the web also. The dealer said they were sure the gas tank has dissolved because of the gasoline and said they want $2,200 for a new gas tank and a $100 per hour to fix their engineering problem. This is a major safety and pollution problem that is wide spread throughout our country and needs to be addressed ASAP. Help !.

11 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Audi A6

Failure Date: 06/25/2009

Aoa has failed to take responsibility for a safety related defect in my Audi A6 fuel system. Given a NHTSA product safety gas storage tank recall, I believe aoa are liable for this safety related defect. On June 26th, 2009 hoffman Audi, east hartford CT, service manager jim orman orally informed me that aoa will take no further action in this matter, the reasons provided were: 1) recall was on other side of the tank - this particular valve was not part of the recall and they've seen only a few others with issues. ?there was no possible way this could occur during the recall repair. ? 2) fuel tank was out of 4 year, 50000 mile warranty. 3) aoa disregards the unsafe condition caused by fuel vapor/fluid leaks resulting from the defective/worn out valve. In discussion it was referenced that ?there were only four other instances of this problem? and cited age of the vehicle. I was told that after reviewing images of my claim, the final decision was made by karl krug, new england regional service manager aoa. Background: in late 2008 I was made aware of a safety recall regarding the potential for fuel tank leakage resulting from cracked nipples on this plastic gas storage tank. A reinforcement repair was performed on my vehicle in December 2008 (NHTSA campaign id number:08v157000). Roughly one month later the check engine light illuminated and the diagnostic fault code related to the tank ventilation system was identified. Last week I isolated the p0456 16840 tank ventilation system pinhole leak code to the fuel tank. Given the complexity of the ventilation system in the fuel tank area, I decided to get the system tested by a dealer. A cracked valve nipple atop the gas storage tank was identified by a Volkswagen service center. I have filed a complaint with the CT attorney general and asked they forward to the appropriate state and federal agencies for further investigation.

Problem relates to Audi A6 quattro 2. 8l model year 2000. Gas odor from outside vehicle is extremely strong, especially after filling tank. Gas leaks and pools under car, posing extreme fire hazard. Failure has not been corrected. Audi recall [08v-157] describes this problem exactly, but only covers model years 2001 through 2004. The VIN range does not cover this vehicle. This request is to expand the coverage of this recall to include Audi A6 quattro 2. 8l vehicles with model year 2000.

13 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Audi A6

Failure Date: 08/04/2008

There is a recent recall for certain Audi models as referenced in NHTSA action number : pe08008. This begins with model year 2001 A6 Audi cars with the 2. 7 engine. I own a 2000 model A6 2. 7 and am having the same problem. There is a gasoline smell that just began and by inspection from underneath the car it appears that there is a slight leak (not dripping) from the top area of the tank as described in this recall. It seems like more than a coincidence that my car is also having a very rare slow gas leak but it was not included in the recall. The gas tank part number (as printed on the bottom of the tank) is 4b0 201 085. This is the same part number as used in the 2001 and 2002 models as referenced from a n online part search. Thank you for your assistance and further research.

14 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Audi A6

Failure Date: 07/14/2008

There has been an Audi recall (opened 1/31/-8, closed 5/30/08) for Audi A6 models manufactured from June 2, 2001 to June 1, 2005. Your NHTSA action number is pe08008, recall campaign number is 08v157000. This involves very dangerous fuel tank cracks and leaks. The problem is, I have a 2000 Audi A6 with exactly the same problem, but no recall. It will cost me about $2,000 to repair, my mechanic says I'm lucky no explosion. If you will check the internet chat rooms, these problems are extensive back to 1998 models, involving plastic fuel tanks. Audi tells me 'not enough complaints' of my year model to warrant recall, even though the defect seems exactly the same thing as the defect causing the recall, and is a terribly dangerous situation for Audi drivers and their families. If there is a defect, there is a defect, it should not matter whether more complaints were filed for the 2001 years than mine. Is safety a matter of the number of complaints, or whether the product is truly defective and dangerous. Please help! thanks, ken williams.

16 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Audi A6

Failure Date: 02/18/2008

January 15, 2011 defective investigation pe08008 Audi 2003 A6 leaking fuel from gas tank assembly attached, please find evidence I reported my fuel tank leaked fuel to a los angeles Audi dealer. I bought the car in 2006 with 66,000 miles and remains with no damage history. In 2008, fuel began dripping at the lower driver side vacuum nipple flange which shifted off the rim of the fuel tank. When the tank was filled passed half full, it would drip onto the ground. There is a valid recall for most 2003 sedan models and the 4. 2l off-road quattro. This model is a 2003 sedan with the 4. 2l engine size and should certainly be included in these two related recalls. Due to no fault of my own, the nature and severity of the defect, I questioned the problem was a manufactures defect warranting repair and potential recall. They disagreed, said it was out of warranty and quoted me a repair. Valentine asserted the condition was noted to my VIN in their system. Later that year, la Audi made different repairs and the fuel leak condition was again put on the work order. Finally in June 2010, a neighbor wrote note the car was leaking fuel. It tank was pouring fuel after filling to the three-quarters mark and parking in our subterranean parking garage. Repair could not be avoided. Based on la Audis position, a local mechanic replaced the entire tank with a salvage one he found. Attached are photos, work repair orders, a hazard note from neighbor of the fuel leak, and signed declaration these item as authentic and all assertions above are truthful. I appreciate assistance obtaining recovery from Audi for the repairs as they refused to when presented twice. Your assistance in this matter is appreciated. Updated portable 02/18/11.

19 Tank Assembly problem of the 2000 Audi A6

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

There was an overwhelming lecel of gasoline fumes inside the car. The problem: the fuel tank breather hose is connected to the fuel tank by a plastic connector. The plastic connector was broken. It is physically located where nothing can contact it. It just broke over time. It's clearly not a warranty issue (the car is out of warranty), but a safety issue. The connector can not be procured separately from the entire fuel tank. The cost to replace the fuel tank would be about $2,000. A repair (hopefully) was made by epoxying the connector, after dropping the fuel tank to reach it. A call to Audi to report the concern as a safety issue was not rewarding. They insisted that the only way they will pursue this further is if we take the car to the Audi dealer (the repair was made at an Audi specialty service center), that we pay them (approximately $500) to drop the fuel tank to just look at the connector to see if it indeed was broken. If we do not pay them this money, so they can see it, they will not believe us and will not pursue this further as a possible safety concern.

20 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Audi A6

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

This complaint is related to an Audi recall #pe08008 issued in may, 2008 and relates to the failure of the a plastic nipple on the gas tank that fails due to stress. According to Audi, my vehicle did not fall within the parameters of the recall per my VIN . According to your notice it covers my 2002 Audi, but only for the 2. 8, 2. 7 and 3. 0 engine on the quattro sedan and the 2. 7 and 4. 2 on the allroad. My Audi is a quattro 4. 2 sedan. 2 years ago, I noticed the smell of fuel around the rear of the car and took it to my repair facility where they diagnosed the exact same problem as described in your recall. My repair involved dropping the back-end to access the tank and actually welding the plastic nipple. I only found out about the recall by chance and called Audi, but they tell me my car is not part of the recall. I don't understand how it can't be.
