Audi A8 owners have reported 58 problems related to engine and engine cooling (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Audi A8 based on all problems reported for the A8.
The coolant is leaking out and onto engine. My safety was at risk due to the car overheating and smoking. This is a on going problem that many Audi’s had a recall for except mines. Yes the vehicle was inspected and the warning that came up was “coolant level low turn off engine”.

Car went dead on the hwy without any warning. Dealer has the vehicle for a month now and says there is metal shavings in fuel and need more than 15000/- in repairs to replace fuel pump, 6 fuel injectors fuel line and fuel rail. Metal shavings come from fuel pump failure there should be micro filters in line to stop them from entering the fuel line and injector with sudden death.

Yet another beautiful Audi 3. 0tfsi with the rocker arm failure … how is there not a class action lawsuit already ? I have a knock in my valve train and I just bought this car two days ago …. Audi should be liable to fix this because I didn’t know nothing about this and with a quick search it’s alike a epidemic of the same problem. .

I was driving along on the highway, at normal speeds. When my engine started surging, causing me to speed up and slow down rapidly. Putting the safety of others behind and in front of me in danger. No check engine or any light of that nature turned on. Then after another mile or so my engine sputtered then just died. I had to pull to the left side of the road since there way a semi truck to my right and it was rush hour here on [xxx] in denver, CO. I don't know what the issue was but I was worried if the people behind me could easily get out from behind me as I almost caused a rear end collision. I'm taking my A8 into the mechanic this coming Monday to find out exactly what was wrong. But engines shouldn't just die out on you on the highway. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Driving up an inclined road at night. Car engine started to sputter and jerk and lost power. Was able to get to the side of the road out of traffic at the top of the hill? I was able to coast down the hill to a gas station. Carl would not drive without jerking or accelerate, add check engine, light on and flashing. With the smell of burning from the engine, compartment waited two hours for a tow truck towed it home, the following day, I had to take off of work. I checked all the spark plugs to find multiple spark plugs completely soaked in oil, took an uber to parts store to buy new spark plugs. At this point I had found out about the recall for the same problem. On the same engine. In all of Audi's cars, except for the A8 line was excluded, do not know the reason why it's the same engine in multiple vehicles that were listed in the recall for the piston rings. My other Audi a 6 has over 200000 miles and does not have this issue. Get these low tension piston ring failures that have been recalled. On the issue with all of Audi's in this year.

Audi, A8l 2013, also has the stuck piston. Rings end oil blow by like the other Volkswagen, defected engines of the same year yesterday while driving my car ended up stalling on a road with traffic behind me going up a hill because too much oil I'd burnt in the cylinders, causing the spark plugs to become completely coated in oil and the cars. Electronic system registered multiple misfires, multiple cylinders. Are misfired and multiple other safety epc codes, causing the vehicle to not be able to drive more than 5 miles an hour, stuttering. Which also caused the engine to almost stall, losing power steering. If this was on the highway this could have been exceptionally bad. I request the Audi ah. L and 8 series to be added to the current recall. For the a6q5a4 a seven with the exact same problem.
The contact owns a 2013 Audi A8. The contact stated that while her son was driving at highway speeds, the warning lights on the instrument panel flashed as the vehicle shut off. The contact's son managed to pull over despite the failure. The vehicle was initially towed to one dealer; however, the dealer failed to service the vehicle promptly. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed with a defective ecm(electronic control module) that needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained in the dealer's possession for a month before the vehicle was repaired. Despite the repair, the contact was notified that the failure persisted and was then informed that a defective engine cylinder now needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle remained in the dealer's possession and had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
Total electrical shutdown over about 2 minutes. Stranded on road. All electrical systems failed rapidly. Strongly suspect this is part of known bsg/alternator issues with this model.

Me and my son were traveling on a business road trip from my home in Lincoln, CA to do business at several companies and end up at a customer located in anaheim, CA. We started on highway 5 in roseville, CA highway interstate 5 traveling towards anaheim with stops along the way. We were coming down highway 5 on the southside of the grapevine at the speed limit of 70 mph, when the engine began to stall, and the steering also began to lock up. We began losing control of the vehicle and engine power was failing and stalling. In addition, the stall was impacting the car battery. We had difficulty steering the car and controlling the direction of the car and getting the car to the side of the road. Once we were at the side of the road, we looked up the closest Audi dealership, fortunately we were 3. 9 miles away from Audi dealership in van nuys, CA. Once on the side of the road the vehicle initially would not restart the engine stalling had drained the battery. We waited on the side of the road for approx. . 40 minutes and were able to restart the car and drive with much difficulty to the keys Audi van nuys dealership. We were able to barely get into the dealership parking lot when the car completely stalled, we went in and met with the service manager. We explained what had happened, and with the service teams help we pushed the vehicle into a bay to get reviewed. I have purchased eight (8) Audi’s over the past years for me and my wife. The service manager promised to review the problem. Typically, Audi service will give you a vehicle to drive but the had no vehicles available, so they told us they would take us to a rental car company and cover the cost of the vehicle except for the insurance on rental car, which we had to pickup at a rate of $ 35. 00 per day. As we were on a work trip we had to hustle to our customers as we had a meeting scheduled for 2:30 pm at manna beverage in anaheim, CA. We went to our meeting and then returned to the Audi dealership in van nuys.
Unknown at this moment service vist is next week. The problem is a know piston ring issues on other years of same engine with massive oil consumption 1 qt a week with minimal driving less then 100 miles. Spent 3k on pvc and coolant pump that are a known issue of totaling engine but burning oil non stop and risk or seized engine if on highway.
The contact owns a 2013 Audi A8. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 22v178000 (engine and engine cooling) however, the contact had scheduled three separate appointments with a dealer and was cancelled after each scheduled appointment. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.
Ecu starting to malfunction as a coolant leak valve is leaking into it. There is a recall for these models but not for my specific car but I do believe my car is affected because my car has a coolant leak that I personally can’t find and my car was just worked on by Audi indianapolis and they did not see any coolant leaks either. It was mentioned to me by another Audi A8 owner and it’s making sense to me as the way everything began to fail on my car until I detached the battery and attached it back it worked fine but sometimes the ecu will begin to fail for adaptive cruise control randomly, then it will work again. These are symptoms of coolant leaking and affecting the ecu, and I can’t afford to pay for that to be fixed because it would cost more than what the car is worth but I would like to see if my car was affected by this recall because I genuinely believe this is what is happening.
The oil strainer needs to be replaced in my car. This is a known issue with Audi and there are many recalls on Audis, with the exception of mine. I read that this can lead to the engine stopping and causing an accident and it can ruin the engine. This has been problem has been reported to me by an independent service center.
Message appeared on display Jan 7 2023: "electrical system: malfunction! please contact service" the trunk lid opened while I was driving, the a/c quit (I am in key west!), the auto start/stop quit. I had heard of many other Audi owners whose car just quit, so I scooted home and parked. I had it towed to coral gables FL at my expense, and the dealer told me it was an alternator problem that needed to be replaced. None available in the us, could be months before it's repaired. Car is 2019 Audi A8 with 42,000 miles.

My car was schedule for the 21h7 recall. I received 2 letters this year to have the recall work done. Audi of pittsburgh's only available date was 12/08/22. I took the car in and later that day I got a call stating the recall was done back in March of this year. I told them it was not. Later I got a call saying it was done in April of 2019. I asked for the repair order and no one will provide it. To me it seems that Audi is looking for a reason not to perform the work.

There is an open recall: 16v619000 which applies to a set of VIN numbers. This same issue happened on my vehicle and my VIN is not part of the recall. Other VIN numbers should be included in this recall like mine. I had to get the repaired on my own for $2500 because this recall isn’t showing up for my VIN number.
The contact owns a 2016 Audi A8. The contact stated while driving at any speed the vehicle will hesitate, also when starting the vehicle in the mornings the vehicle will shake until the engine warms up. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to a local dealer, where it was diagnosed and the failure was not determined. The contact researched online and related the failures to NHTSA campaign number: 22v178000 (engine and engine cooling), NHTSA campaign number: 20v397000 (structure), and NHTSA campaign number: 19v057000 (fuel system, gasoline). The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 42,000.
I was told the recall wasn't yet active, but the dealer had the parts to take care of the recall. Now I am being told I must pay for the recall repair and wait an undetermined amount of time to get reimbursed through the manufacturer. Meanwhile I can not do anything with the vehicle as if I sell it I cannot collect the monies from which they want me to pay ( over $8000 ). Please advise as this is a lot of money to tie up not knowing when it will be refunded. Thank you, laurence ouellette 603-493-7924 rideav8@yahoo. Com.
My car don’t get the full power & it whistles they say it’s the oil seperator .
Manufacturer recall number21h7 NHTSA recall number22v178 this recall was issued in may 2022. I emailed Audi USA, who advised me that they do not have a repair they can implement to address this recall. This is surprising because, according to an Audi enthusiast website, repairs under this recall are being made in the united kingdom. See pdf attached. Why is Audi telling me they cannot repair my car when they seem to be doing just that in other countries? it appears that this is not a complicated repair and seems to involve only replacing a mesh oil strainer.
The contact owns a 2015 Audi A8. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated and the vehicle that stalled. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the engine failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
In March of 2022, a safety recall number 21h7, was issued for my 2013 Audi A8l regarding the oil strainer which could clog and result in the turbocharger failing and subsequent consequences. I have contacted my Audi dealer numerous times since first receiving written notification with the most recent contact being today October 31. The dealer says they still don’t have the necessary parts and even though there is still supply chain issues internationally, quite enough time has passed and when I reached out to Audi USA, they said parts have been available since August! I have not had any issues yet in driving the car but still feel reluctant to do so and would like this fixed ASAP. Thank you.
The car has only 60,000 miles and it is gently driven. In the middle of the interstate it started making a rattling noise. Immediately the car ceased to run. Luckily there was no vehicle otherwise it would have been a disaster. I managed to start the car back and bring it to my home which was nearby. I called a friend who is the mechanic and he mentioned the turbo had failed.
Vehicle engine would suddenly stop working, warning, "drive system malfunction: stop vehicle safely. " it has happened 3 times within 3 days in the middle of the intersection. Dealers wouldn't take this issue seriously and they asked me to make an appointment online, which is scheduled to be 1 month away. The issue almost caused an accident twice. Adaptive cruise is also malfunctioning, engine random misfire, sunroof rattle, etc. This car is just so problematic it only has 20,000 miles on it and had scheduled maintenance performed just a month back.
With out any prior warning the car began to sputter and then lost power while I was on the highway. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership and found the turbos failed which caused the problem. This car has been well maintained and serviced by the dealership. It now has a $14000. 00 repair bill.
Turbos failed. Was traveling home on a highway, when I pulled off the engine suddenly stalls out and loss of steering occurs as the engine system automatically puts you in park. Switching to neutral leads to a very 'leaden'/heavy driving feeling (kind of like with no power steering, but a little better). Able to get it restarted again with some effort. Car will stall out at any point in time when rpm is 1200 or less (you have about . 25s to get it back out of that range or it stalls again). Power is sluggish. To avoid stalls, shifts must be rapid and neutral-shift+gas needs to be applied to prevent rpm from being below 1200. Made it home safely, but had it towed to dealership. Dealership notified me that it was a turbo failure, both impellers have become lodged in the side of turbo casing and are stalled out. Nothing preceded this; no engine lights or anything. Effect was sudden and drastic. Temperatures were fine. Attempt to drive to repair shop led to total loss of coolant. It is believed this is a seperate issue.
Turbo chargers failed on highway at highway speeds leading major loss of power in a passing situation nearly causing an accident then the car stalled at exit ramp.
Car is not blowing hot air. I have a transmission fault code related to this which is p2753. Coolant is leaking and has run through the control valve to the wiring and connector causing corrosion.
My Audi certified preowned A8l, 4. 0 tfsi suffered a complete turbocharger failure without any notice. The car went into service 9/30/2013. I purchased the car from the same dealer that originally sold the car in stratham, new hampshire on 12/26/2016. I purchased an extended warranty from the dealership for 8 years, 100,000 miles. Thus, the extended warranty expired on 9/30/2021. Car has always been serviced by this Audi stratham dealership. During a routine trip, car stalled, went into neutral upon entering a stoplight/intersection and would not re-start. Had to be towed. No modifications ever made to this vehicle. Recently had 75,000 mile service interval completed by Audi. Car now has 81,000 miles. Audi technical service bulletin [21 engine difficult to start, turbocharger damaged, v8 4. 0tfsi 21 17 27 2044640/2 November 21, 2017. Supersedes technical service bulletin group 21 number 17-24 dated February 2, 2017] describes this problem. Audi refuses to cover the ~$9,000 repair.
Engine stalled as I approached departure terminal at newark airport. Dealer has inspected and determined the turbo impeller is bent and requires replacement. Car will not run. This is a known problem on Audi turbo engines apparently. Just prior to stalling the oil low light came on then the car stalled out creating a hazardous safety situation for a perfectly well maintained car.
Failure both turbos purchased Audi naples Jan 2018 maintained at Audi ft myers Audi while on a vacation from our home in florida to new england our Audi A8 experienced a major turbo failure while on an interstate highway. On 8/6/21 I was traveling in the middle lane of i495 at 65 mph, when traffic slowed, the car stalled. With cars passing me on both sides I eventually managed to get the car started and made it to exit 15 (rt44) going toward Plymouth, MA. This truly was a scary situation, waiting to be rear ended. While on rt 44 it died again in traffic. I managed to make it into the breakdown lane. At about 2:55 pm a state trooper stopped and asked if he could help me get to a safer spot but by that time I had called aaa. At 3:30pm aaa arrived and towed us to a safe spot. At no time before, during or after this failure did I receive any message or warning that this failure was imminent. The car was taken to Audi norwell and diagnosed with defective turbos due to failure of turbo shaft bearings . The screens were clogged preventing oil from reaching the bearings. The turbos were the original equipment. I have read in the Audi forum this is not an uncommon problem. I understand the screens have been redesigned as a result.
The car start chugging and lost power while driving. My safety and the safety of other drivers were at risk, because the vehicle stalled immediately. This issue happened while exiting off the highway. The vehicle was inspected by an Audi dealer and the issue reported was turbo charger issue. There were no warnings prior to the failure.
I was driving and my turbos blew causing my car to shut down and not be able to restart. I was in the middle of traffic and was lucky to pull over. There was no warning and I had my 2 young kids in the car and it could have caused an accident. This was dangerous for myself and other motorists. I use this vehicle as a daily driver and this should not happen. I have not had it repaired yet but I can only imagine it will costs thousands of dollars.
After exiting the highway the car just stopped running. There was no warning and all power was lost. Engine would not start up and vehicle had to be towed from the road. It was at night and the car stopped dead at an intersection (safety). We are grateful that the problem did not happen on the ohio turnpike we just exited. There was a clunk sound before it stopped. I suspect the turbo let loose. This has not been confirmed yet by the dealer. There was no warning.
