Audi Q5 owners have reported 31 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Audi Q5 based on all problems reported for the Q5.
Safety system malfunction message appears on dash. Passenger side air bag goes on and off while driving. Whole system chimes and random messages flashing on screen constantly. At times system doesn’t recognize that I have my drivers side seatbelt buckled. So system keeps chiming cars stanton. Random messages flash on dash. Traffic jam assist (3 cars symbol) unavailable and image flash on dash and does another chime. Vehicle has given random warning beeps when reversing 2 times since these issues started and has done automatic breaking both times as I was trying to reverse. Issues happen randomly and started about 300 miles ago (2 weeks or so) seem to be getting more frequent in past few days. I was trying to check today for open recall and was surprised to not have any for this issue / vehicle. I have not yet called the dealership but plan on doing so this week. This “safety system malfunction” and all the chimes, flashes, beeps, screen messages and the automatic vehicle responses is very dangerous!!.

While driving home from the dealership on route 65 at approximately 45 mph, the vehicle suddenly and forcefully applied the brakes without warning. My husband and I are experiencing symptoms of whiplash including back and neck pain. There were no vehicles, pedestrians, or obstacles nearby that would have triggered this response. This was a scary experience, and I am concerned it could happen again in traffic or at higher speeds. This incident presents a serious safety hazard to me, my passengers, and others on the road. The auto was purchased one week ago. Had it in for service. According to the service summary, the driver assist system had a coding error, and a hard reset of the module was performed. Unfortunately, after the braking incident, upon arriving home and restarting the vehicle, the same error message “initializing active front assist” immediately reappeared. I drove the vehicle for an additional five minutes, and the message remained. This suggests the issue was not resolved and may indicate a deeper fault in the system.
Audi pre sense has applied the breaks and cause dangerous situations a total of three times. This occurred twice within the first six months I had the car. I made a left turn and the car suddenly stopped in the intersection and applied the brakes with great force that I was jolted quite hard. I brought the car into an Audi dealership and they adjusted the Audi pre sense settings to be less sensitive but the issue happened again recently. The situation was the same where the brakes suddenly were applied while I made a left turn leaving me standing still in an intersection with oncoming traffic headed at me. It is not possible for Audi to completely turn off the pre sense system, the driver would have to do so each time they start the car which isn't realistic. I believe there needs to be a recall. I feel unsafe.

Component/system malfunction: the Audi pre-sense system has malfunctioned on multiple occasions. The system is available for inspection upon request. What happened: on two separate occasions, the pre-sense system erroneously activated while making an unprotected left turn at a signal-controlled intersection. In both instances, the left turn signal was activated. After waiting for an oncoming vehicle to pass, I began the left turn. Despite the vehicle having passed, the pre-sense system activated, incorrectly perceiving the passing car as a threat. The system abruptly engaged emergency braking, locking the car in place and stalling it in the middle of the intersection. This left my two minor children and me stranded in oncoming traffic, creating an immediate and severe safety hazard. On a separate occasion, while driving straight in a lane with no intention of turning, the pre-sense system activated again. This time, the vehicle next to me slowed to make a left turn in its lane, which triggered my car's system to abruptly stop and stall in traffic. Risk to safety: these malfunctions placed my family and other road users in immediate danger of a collision. In the left-turn incidents, the car stalled in the middle of an intersection with oncoming traffic approaching. In the straight-driving incident, the sudden stop created a risk of being rear-ended in traffic. Attempts to resolve: after the first two incidents, I brought the vehicle to the dealership for inspection. A full diagnostic test was conducted, and I was told the pre-sense system was functioning "properly" with no repairs needed. Dealership staff admitted they had experienced similar pre-sense malfunctions in their own vehicles but dismissed the issue. I was advised to ensure my left turn signal was activated, despite already confirming the signal was on during both incidents. Warning lamps or symptoms: there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem before the failures occurred.
I was coming to a stop. No objects were in front of me. At about 5mph I was violently thrown forward as the car applied full braking. I do not recall whether I was braking, coasting. This happened a second time as we were making a slow speed turn in an intersection, applying light acceleration. I have not taken the car to the dealership. There were no accidents in both cases. I did go into the vehicle settings and turned the aes off. There have been no further incidents.

While starting a left turn from the center left turn lane the car abruptly and forcefully applied the brakes and placed itself in park. There was a single vehicle in the oncoming lane of traffic but it was a more than sufficient distance away to allow the turn to be completed safely. We had not yet left our own lane and there was no risk of collision as a result of the incident. There was no warning from the vehicle prior to the event taking place and after the incident took place a pre sense warning was displayed on the dash. We were quite disoriented after the incident and it was several seconds before we realized what had happened. My passenger complained of not feeling well after the incident and still does not feel well several hours after it took place. The vehicle has not been taken for any inspection at this time. We found the option to disable pre sense in the Audi mmi settings and have since driven the car with the feature disabled, but it has to be disabled every time the car is restarted.
The panel showed vehicle lights malfunction. The side marker lights are on all the time. This happened without any accident or changes of the setting.
3 times this vehicle did not try to stop in time to keep from rear ending a vehicle. The imminent crash warning would come on but the vehicle did not try to stop. This model is supposed to apply the brakes on its own to keep from rear ending someone but it did not apply brakes. If I hadn’t taken hard and immediate braking action we would have rear ended vehicles. The vehicle has an $5800. 00 option to brake in emergency situations. There have been at least 3 instances where the vehicle will not engage with lane keeping attempts while being on. This vehicle will also not notify the driver that the vehicle is leaving its lane even though it has lane keeping technology options turned on and purchased.

Such incident happened two times: when I was driving at normal speed, another vehicle quickly approached me from back while switching to my lane. Out of any instruction, my vehicle applied brakes to decelerate. This almost caused crash and put my safety at high risk!.
When making a left turn at green light, 4 lane road with oncoming traffic, part way into the turn SUV abruptly slammed on brakes came to immediate dead stop; driver & front seat passenger were restrained by seat belts. Literally SUV was almost rear-ended, plus oncoming traffic "was still oncoming" at 40+ mph and had to steer clear of SUV that came to dead stop partway into intersection. Clearly a defect with the driver assistance automatic breaking system. Easily could have been serious, multi-vehicle, possibly fatal accident.
The Audi "pre sense" automatic braking system engaged without warning and without reason bringing the vehicle to a sudden and complete stop in the middle of an intersection and slamming my body backwards and causing my head to go forward nearly hitting the steering wheel. A school bus was directly behind me and was able to stop in time before it ran into the back of my vehicle, but it could have caused serious injury or death to multiple people. It caused a considerable amount of pain in my neck the day after and soreness in my ribs. The vehicle gave no prior warning. It did display a message simultaneously when it applied the brakes and locked the seatbelts that the "pre sense" had been engaged. It has happened three times prior to this incident. The vehicle dealer has told me that they see record of the system engaging but it does not appear to be faulty by the manufacturers standards despite numerous complaints and frequent occurrences.

Happens weekly, the car breaks randomly when making a left turn, but it slams on the breaks to where you feel like you’ve made impact. It does this in the middle of the intersection and we could be hit head on or rear ended. It continues to happen, it has been in for service at least 3 times over the past year and Audi continues to say there isn’t a problem. Yet people are complaining about this all over social media, and Audi does have a fix for this on their other models, just not the Q5 which is what we are leasing. Please help! we are in danger and are nervous every time we drive this car!.
Audi pre-sense slammed on brakes on a dry empty road while I was driving between 45-50mph. Had there been a car behind me, as there usually is in this location, I would certainly have been rear-ended. As it was, my head, neck and back got a heavy jolt, and of course the whole thing distracted me from safely driving the car. I had to pull over to catch my breath (just because it was scary) and figure out how to turn the thing off for the drive home. The dealer checked the computer system and reported that there were no "faults" recorded there. In other words, the system is working "properly". Dealer cannot turn it permanently off because it's a safety feature. The only way to prevent future dangerous deployments is to navigate through 3 layers of touchscreens to turn it off *each time I start the car*, but this has to be done every trip. I have had the brakes erroneously applied several times at lower speeds, one of those times (in the 2018 model) the seatbelt reeled me back into the seat squeezing my chest. Again, no obstacle or hazard of any kind was present, just the hazard of erratic and aggressive car automation.
Car suddenly applies brakes and sounds alarms when driving out of a sloping driveway or parking lot. It appears that the sensors point at the pavement at the inflection point of the sloped driveway/road and detects that as an obstacle. This happens regularly at certain parking lots - all the blinking and braking make it very difficult to navigate into the traffic lane safely. Audi dealership assures me this is normal. It also suddenly brakes (sometimes) and sounds alarms as I back out of my own gently sloped driveway. I am always paying attention to my surroundings and not operating a phone or doing other activities while I'm driving. There is unquestionably no hazard or obstacle. The risk for damage to my neck is fairly low at these speeds, but when I'm backing I generally look over my shoulder, and a good jolt (even at low speeds) is pretty unpleasant and could definitely cause injury.
My vehicle does a few things that are dangerous. Number 1 the emergency brake went on automatically when I was driving the parkway in new jersey telling me to watch my surroundings. I was driving late in the evening and no cars were in my immediate distance. Another issue, the emergency warning light just came on my dash telling me my light above my license plate was faulty and I was almost rear ended by the vehicle behind me. My tail lights just stopped working out of no where. Also, when I am backing into a parking space the brakes will automatically slam on when there is no need.
This was unintentional acceleration case: when I got into the parking space, the car was almost stopped and I was about to press the park button (gear) and the car suddenly accelerated and in a fraction of a second, climbed the curb, crashed into the fence, broke the fence and crushed on a tree. I was still applying brake to stop it and I could not do anything else. The following facts show that the acceleration was totally out of my control. 1. Vehicle climbed the curb 2. And climbed the dirt part, shrubs 3. To hit the fence and broke it; it looked like something mall functioned. As a matter of fact, no safety feature worked and no sound signals went on ! even vehicle's collision system did not kick in when car was climbing over the curb. Fortunately, I could get out of that car and my body was aching due to the seat belt and airbag explosion. (driver side bag exploded for sure. I do not remember if the other side bag exploded. ).
We were driving today at around 11:30am and all of a sudden the “Audi presense” light came on at the same time the car brakes abruptly slowed down the car for about 5 seconds or so and then released. Today is a beautiful sunny day and there were no vehicles anywhere or anything in roadway on the road we were traveling on. The jerking /abrupt slowdown really surprised us. We will go to Audi dealer ASAP but now we don’t trust when it will happen again. A car could have hit us from behind.

My wife was pulling into a parking spot when all of a sudden the cars engine accelerated causing the car to jump one curb, hit a step and striking a pole before finally the brakes stopped the car from going through a storefront. None of the safety crash features stopped the vehicle. My wifes foot was on the brake, not the accelerator. Previously we had the vehicle in for service to reset the computer that kept freezing. Unfortunately we did not research Audi in detail before we bought. Since this occurrence, we have seen that some of Audi's models have had a history of "unintended sudden acceleration" and that there was actually a class action lawsuit years ago. After reading about those occurrences, we believe that this is what occurred. Audi corporate sent their engineers to download the computer data. They concluded that there was no computer error and no evidence of impact. Clearly there was impact since the car had to be repaired. I have since driven the exact route into the parking lot to see if possibly my wifes foot could have been on the accelerator. I made a right turn, quick left turn and quick right turn into the parking spot and my foot was on the brake the entire time. All third parties that have looked at the vehicle don't believe that there was a computer acceleration malfunction because the engineers said that they didn't identify a problem. I will never drive an Audi again. After this incident, I have spoken with other Audi owners and there seems to be issues with the german engineered "safety" controls. Apply brakes when not necessary, lane control jerking back into traffic when in an exit only lane. I am thankful that no person was in front of my vehicle when this occurred.
When stopped and proceeding to make a left turn the pre sense system activated the emergency braking almost causing the car behind me to hit me. . There were no vehicles approaching me in front or on the left side. . A car was passing me on the right at a slow speed. This has happened numerous times. It has been into the Audi dealership previously for the same problem. I spoke with Audi USA today who said there is nothing they can do and that maybe I should shut the pre sense off. . A less than brilliant and acceptable solution.
Recently on a number of occassions the car stopped because the pre-sense sensor went off prematurely. There were no cars within 500 feet of my car on all occassions. Now the pre-sense has completely turned off and will not turn back on.
This has happened several times. After waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn, as I start to accelerate, the Audi presense triggers (message comes up) and slams on the brakes. There was no traffic that could have caused any hazard. It could have left me stranded in oncoming traffic. There are many other people reporting this same issue on Audi forums.
Regarding my 2018 Audi Q5 34000 miles. Driving on a busy highway a few ounces of water spilled in the backseat. Car lights up like a xmas tree and car came to a screeching stop. Two lanes of high speed traffic on both sides. Fiance just had both hips replaced, ends up popping one of them out of socket during ordeal. Recall was issued for installation of 'protective cover' over gateway control module. Car received recall work. Part still failed. Audi won't cover the part. I'm out of warranty. Total bill $1800. Dealer has had car 3 weeks. I've been out of pocket for rental car.
We purchased our 2018 Audi Q5 in may 2018, which currently has 31,567 miles. Having done the majority of the driving, I am pleased overall, and continue to be a proud Audi owner. However, as with all new cars, we had some glitches. For example, when backing out of the garage, the pre-sense would activate for no apparent reason, causing the brakes to lock up this happened three times and each time the service department was able to recalibrate the system. I felt the problem was resolved until recently when it occurred for the fourth time. This is not the reason for my letter but is intended to provide background information I feel is related to a more serious problem. Recently I have experienced situations that concern my safety and the safety of my passengers, not to mention other drivers, especially those immediately behind me. On two occasions while driving on the open road, the brakes have slammed on even though, fortunately, there were no other vehicles or impairments near us. (incident dates: 05/28/2023 and 06/09/2023. ) it was indeed a frightening experience, to the point where my wife will not drive the car believing that the potential for another incident could occur (reference previously mentioned backup issues). My Audi advisor, whom I highly regard, has provided me with a five step procedure for bypassing the associated emergency braking pre-sensor(s), which requires being activated with each drive cycle. I did some online investigating and discovered that this is a known problem since at least 2016 as you will read in the attached article. Also included is a related Audi technical service bulletin. . Traveling north interstate 95 about 40 miles south of jacksonville, FL. 4/7/23 at 8 am. Traffic slowed , brakes flailed , no emergency brakes, hit others cars and travelled off road, car flew into a tree 10 ft up, cut off the top of tree and landed on nose upside down against a tree.
Please note that this exact same issue has been previously reported by another driver . . . While the car was fully stopped at a red light, in drive, and with the brake pedal depressed, the Audi pre sense system falsely triggered. There were no vehicles or pedestrians in close proximity and there was no apparent reason for the trigger. The seat belts were forcefully retracted and the pre sense light came on on the dash. If the car had been moving, this could have caused a serious accident. There have been multiple reports on this on Audi's discussion boards. . Read more...
Accident occurred in the parking lot as I was trying to park, sudden unintended acceleration occurred that caused the car to hit the building. Neither front nor back airbags deployed, as well as the automatic emergency break of the collision safety system did not work or activated to stop the car. Both my wife and I were hospitalized. The auto emergency system of the Audi Q5 is not reliable, and the need for recall.

The issues all relate to Audi's "pre-sense" system. On several occasions the car has either pulled hard and caused me to swerve - apparently incorrectly sensing that I am veering out of my lane - or has stopped suddenly - apparently incorrectly sensing that I was about to hit (or be hit by) something. These incidents have happened on the freeway, narrow mountain roads and side streets. All of these incidents could have caused serious serious bodily injury or death to persons and/or damage to property. I have been in touch with Audi numerous times and they have been unable to correct the issue.
I have experienced two false activation of emergency brakes on my 2021 Q5 in the past 3 months. Both have been very scary incidents for my family - Feb 2022" driving on a highway with no vehicle in front at 60mph, going through a shade under a bridge where emergency brakes false kicked in - 4/30/22 around 2pm: driving on a street with no vehicle in front at 30mph where emergency brakes falsely kicked in.
The cars emergency brake system malfunctioned on our 2018 Audi Q5 premium plus, causing the brakes to lock up for no reason while traveling on a busy street at 35 mph. The force of the braking was enough to cause a bruise from the seatbelt. The risk is potential loss of control of the car, especially if this occurred at a higher speed, or being rear ended. We immediately took the car to an Audi dealer who could not id an issue from looking at fault codes. We have been experiencing other bogus warning messages: light system warning (nothing wrong), engine rpm exceeded warnings (engine rpms never close to being exceeded), phone sos errors. No warnings or symptoms regarding the brake system. Dealer says to monitor. We have been driving the car for about a week since, and have not experienced the same issue again.
It says driver system malfunction. Day before that it says auto start and stop malfunction failure. When you are the traffic light and slow down and take a turn then the car gives kinds of couple of pushes as if the it gearbox is not able to adjust the speed automatically . You need to accelerate to keep the balance of the car. Every passenger of the car feel the same. After 2 days I started getting driver system malfunction warning. The car is not safe to drive on highways or local road as gearbox has some issues. There is a class action lawsuit for the similar problem which Audi did not address yet. Https://margarianlaw. Com/Audi-class-action-lawsuit/.
Tl the contact owns a 2018 Audi Q5. The contact stated that the forward collision avoidance system engaged independently on two occasions. On February 12, 2019, while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle sensed a potential front end collision. The brakes automatically applied and the contact lost control of the vehicle. There were no other vehicles around at the time of the failure and the contact assumed the icy road conditions contributed to the failure. The second incident occurred on March 4, 2019 while idling at a stop light. As the light changed and the preceding vehicle began to accelerate, the forward collision avoidance system engaged. The brakes did not engage; however, a false positive sensor warning was displayed. The second failure was reported to an unknown dealer the same day, but no response was received. The contact stated that the failure was a safety hazard that could result in harm to the vehicle occupants or others. The vehicle was taken to Audi of rochester hill (45441 dequindre road, rochester hill, michigan 48307, (248) 997-7400) where it was diagnosed that the vehicle's collision system malfunctioned due to ice on the sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 600.
