Was driving on small town road, pulling into gas station, and 'steering malfunction, stop car immediately' notice popped up, with red steering wheel icon above message with line across wheel and exclamation mark. I lost power steering at the same time, immediately. Very difficult to drive, and thankful it was not on busy, interstate road, and that nothing more happened. Very tough to drive, and so far, need to tow to Audi dealership to check and repair. I have been in touch with Audi, nothing they can do over phone, they suspect electronic issue. Very dangerous and disappointing. Just happy it did not cause death or injury.
Driving down the road at 50 mph and warning light came on stating "steering malfunction" and lost all steering capacity and had difficultly safely exiting the traveled road to safe location. No steering and avoiding a rear collision due to unexpected breaking to handle car.
02/04/2025 after work I was driving on local street in rush hours, suddenly the display panel popped out the warning message: steering: malfunction! please stop vehicle. Then I found out the wheel couldn't turn right or left any more. I turned on the emergency light immediately and moved my vehicle close to curb pending tow truck. Luckily it was raining evening, traffic was slow at 15~20 mph, this incident didn't cause crash or injury but blocking the traffic more then one hour for the tow truck. If it happened on highway, I couldn't imagine what the serious fatal accident would be. . . After the Audi tech inspected, it was the electrical steering failed / the internal control died out--a defective parts.

The vehicle was brought to a stop and was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the steering rack had failed due to a loss of communication with the steering module. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 64,851.

1. Steering malfunction, yes. 2. In the course of driving on 1-70 through a mountain pass in colorado with snow and poor driving conditions, the steering mechanism on the vehicle failed resulting in not being able to maneuver the vehicle out of the lane or off the road safely. If this happened while other vehicles were in front/behind or to the side of us, or if this would have happened in another mountain road without emergency curbing/exits - we could have easily been killed. 3. The vehicle is at the Audi denver dealership (had to be towed) and they confirmed the code "steering: malfunction! please stop vehicle" that displayed on the panel. 4. No, tried to call Audi but there was a 2 hour wait to talk to someone and even then, not sure I would have reached anyone that could have helped. 5. Warning message "steering: malfunction! please stop vehicle" displayed with red steering wheel icon and exclamation mark. No other warning or sign of failure. This is the problem, driving at highway speed, get a steering malfunction warning, can't steer or control the vehicle - have to stop "safely". This could have been catastrophic. In any other vehicle if rack/pinon slips or power steering fluid fails, you can still manage to steer and avoid collision, this Audi under these conditions gave no such option.
My car first had a warning “electrical system: malfunction! please contact service. ” I made a appointment at my Audi dealership 2 days later, but the next day I got more warnings. “automatic start/stop system: malfunction!” then my power steering was not working. I decided to drive straight to the service department that afternoon, but never made it. In rush hour traffic on a busy street, my Q7 started beeping every warning - “electrical system: malfunction! safely stop vehicle”, “drive system: malfunction! stop vehicle safely” and the vehicle decreased speed then abruptly turned off. I was so scared that I would get hit by the traffic zooming around me. It wouldn't go into neutral and my parking brake was engaged blinking. I put on my hazard lights and called 911 for traffic assistance while sitting in my car. I was able to safely exit and after calling Audi, I could get my car into neutral and move it off the busy street with the help of some good samaritans. I had the car towed to Audi. The service department said they have seen this a handful of times and that it's a problem with the accelerator/generator.

There is rapid pecking noise / vibration when traveling during all right directional curves in the road. When I head in to a slight curve where the steering wheel only needs to be moved a few degrees to the right, the noise is such that I can feel it around the firewall and footwell of both driver and passenger side not to mention it is very loud and annoying. I notified bill jacobs BMW along with the brakes squeeling while backing up) where I bought the vehicle and they said to take it to an Audi dealer. I went to Audi of lexington ky and they were wanting to charge me over 8k to replace the exhaust. I did have the exhaust replaced and new front brakes completely replaced and the issue for both are still present. Very dissapointed since I found two TSB's relating to my vehicle after paying so much for the work. There is a TSB for the exhaust downpipe and mounts as well as a TSB for squealing brakes. Being told, all german cars have squeaky brakes is bs.
The contact owns a 2017 Audi Q7. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the steering wheel became difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering shaft bolt was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired and the failure was remedied. The contact was informed the VIN was not included in the NHTSA campaign number: 20v149000(steering). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced that same failure listed in the recall. The manufacturer was not yet contacted regarding the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.
Battery light on dash red and yellow abs light on. . Multi electric faults. On my massage board and car died on the road.
Power steering assistance unit stoped working suddenly while driving. Then car was very difficult to steer. Fault could not be reseted, unit was not accessible with service computer in Audi shop. The steering unit was replaced. Just by luck that did not happen while driving at high speed. This could have been resulting in crash with casualties. While browsing the internet for advice it shows multiple incidents with the Audi electric powered steering unit. In the attached pic’s it shows a wet rubber seal and a corroded drive shaft of the replaced part (note the part numbers). Water and oil can find its way into the resolver unit and render it useless, cause lost of feedback signal hence kill the unit. Additional observation: month before this incident happen, while driving at low speed in warmer/hot environment, a stepper motor feeling was noticeable on the steering wheel. Also a sound can be heared similar to rubber scratches over a dry surface. The disturbance went away when the car cooled down for some hours. It would be advisable to investigate the issue further as the consequences of loss if steering power could be very serious. Wishing everyone a safe travel.
Start/stop system malfunction. The vehicle gave me this warning and the vehicle almost stopped completely in the interstate while doing 65mph. The warning disappeared after couple of times of turning the car back on, but it appeared once again. It looks that their are many complaints and a class act lawsuit on Audi about this problem but no recalls. It's dangerous and really mind blowing that nothing has been done on this issue.
Summary Volkswagen group of America, inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2019 Audi q8 and 2017-2019 Audi Q7 vehicles. The bolt connecting the steering shaft to the steering gear may loosen, possibly resulting in a loss of steering control. Consequences a sudden loss of loss of steering control may increase the risk of a crash. Remedy Volkswagen will notify owners, and Audi dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering shaft bolt, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2020. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 36a1. Apparently my VIN is not covered but others are. My car is telling me that this is the issue. Why are others covered and mine is not?.
Multiple warnings indicating to contact dealer (lane departure, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, electric system malfunction, steering malfunction) then a few minutes later transmission failure and engine failure imminent. . . . Attempted to move out of traffic. Luckily, I made it to the right lane before the steering shut down, then the transmission failed (stepping on the gas caused the engine to rev, but no power was delivered to the wheels), and last the car completely died. Had to have it towed to dealership. Dealership confirmed that the starter/generator failed.
Driving about 25 mph power of steering wheel was lost, steering became very hard. I stopped, no accident. Not reported yet. Messages appeared: 1. Steering: malfunction! please stop vehicle 2. Audi pre sense 3. Lane departure warning 4. Emergency assist.
My Audi with 42k miles ran out of gas on the interstate highway without any warning. Failure was a fuel sending unit which provides fuel quantity info and the low fuel light. The erroneous display indicated just less than half tank and the display indicated 185 miles to empty. This failure of the engine to suddenly quit on a busy freeway is potentially catastrophic! at a minimum there should be a safety recall requiring the Audi company to design the low fuel light to be on a separate circuit.

Steering wheel intermittently gets really hard to turn. Like a total loss of power steering assist. This only usually lasts a moment or two, then functions as normal. Always while driving, but not always while navigating a turn. Might only happen once or twice a week. . . Really frightening. Dealer has performed numerous repairs, including even a new rack (at my expense) it doesn't happen again for a while, and then it does the same thing again.

On intermittent and at unpredictable times while the car is in motion, the vehicle will show a series of two warnings while it appears to turn the steering wheel in the absence of any input from the driver. The first warning light indicates an electromechanical steering failure (indicator light flashes red for approximately one second) and the second states, "distance warning: currently unavailable. See owner's manual. " unfortunately, there is not a description of a "distance warning" in the owner's manual to refer to for guidance. This has been a long-time issue and I have taken it to the dealership several times over the last two years to have it evaluated; however, since it is an intermittent issue they have not been able to replicate it and have not been able to offer any insight on fixing the problem. These occurrences are also sometimes coincident with with a separate warning that states, "Audi pre-sense: currently restricted. See owner's manual. " these warnings also sometimes occur when the vehicle is stopped.
While driving my Audi Q7 2017 SUV on highway with my family (spouse and two kids), I got alert on Audi dashboard that steering wheel is malfunction and was not able to use power steering, it immediately feels like manual steering. I also lost adaptive cruise control, lane assistance and object identification assistance. I took car to Audi dealer and they refused to admit that there was a recall regarding this issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Audi Q7. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the power steer malfunction warning light illuminated, and the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering control module and steering gear were faulty and needed to be replaced. The steering module and steering gear were replaced, and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 20v149000 (steering). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 47,000.
When turning the steering wheel there is a noise that sounds like something rubbing. It can be felt in the wheel.
~tl- the contact owns a 2018 Audi Q7. The contact stated while driving 25 mph at a warning light illuminated on dash board stating steering malfuntcon please vehicle. . The contact pulled over the vehicle to a book store and attempted restart the vehicle, however the message was still there. The contact left the vehicle at book store parking lot over night. The conact had the manufacture towed vehicle to local dealer bell Audi (782 us-1, edison, NJ 08817) who diagnosed the failure as steering wheel system issue that would need to be replace, the vehicle was not repaired due to cost. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 60,328.
While driving down a local city street, the car began to lose power, flashed a bunch of error codes and then lost power within a few seconds. The steering wheel locked when this happened so the car could not safely be steered off the road. They did initially replace the battery thinking that that was the cause but it happened shortly after leaving the mechanic so it we took at back which is when we were told that a software update was needed but that only the dealership can do this. The car is now sitting at the dealership but that are now telling us that we must buy their battery otherwise they can't work on it.
While turning onto an exit ramp from the highway at a low speed, my son said the steering wheel suddenly locked up (it stiffened to the point of no movement) and he couldn't turn the wheel and crashed into a guard rail.
My son driving at low speed could not maintain control of the vehicle to avoid hitting the guard rail coming off a highway. It was like he hydroplaned without a puddle in existence.
Beginning at 1,700 miles (happened three times), then again just two days ago at 4,700 miles, just after starting the car, the electronic waning messages and lights on dash went crazy. The following messages appeared in a rotating sequence (1) safety system malfunction (2) tire pressure malfunction (3) transmission malfunction (4) drive system malfunction (5) adaptive light malfunction (6) brakes malfunction - stop vehicle safely (7) Audi pre sense currently limited (8) stabilization control esc malfunction. In addition, the power steering stopped working for 5-10 seconds while attempting to drive at low speed. The messages appeared first while stationary, but continued while driving at low and highway speeds. Each time, over the course of 24 hours, the warnings lights and messages went back to normal.
Vehicle stability while driving on automatic driving /lane keeping system failed 3 times almost causing vehicle to loose control and crash. On 4 other occasions the vehicles lane keeping failed to keep between lanes and instead vear vehicle in different steering directions, forcing me to pull against the stearing wheel to go back straight. Audi America and local dealer continue to say everything is ok but on all three occasions I had witnesses in my car.
Crank pulley hard rubber core or so called harmonic balancer broke and serpentine belt fell off causing to loose power steering and not be able to steer. I was pulling out of a highway ramp and thankfully other cars were able to avoid me due to the low traffic at the time of the incident.

Was driving new used vehicle on 55 mile zone n my land assistance pulled my staring to right hard on single lane to the intersection. May be one side line was getting wide for intersection. But it was sudden pull.
Since day 1 of ownership 9/29/19 the 2019 Audi Q7 has had an intermittent electronic steering issue where steering automatically becomes heavier. This results in more effort to effectively steer the vehicle. Audi of beaverton or where the 2019 Q7 was purchased new has attempted to fix twice. The second attempt resulted in full replacement of the electronic steering rack. Issue randomly presents itself while driving. Current mileage on vehicle is 3,885 miles.
Main pulley or so called harmonic balancer broke and serpentine belt fell off causing to loose power steering and not be able to steer I was lucky that just made it the turn and I was on straight pat and low speed to stop safely.
Purchased a new 2018 Audi Q7 late June 2018 with goodyear eagle all season tires (285/45r20). After about 24,000 miles, notice steering was drifting towards the passenger side while driving on highway and road in normal conditions. Then notice both front tires started to "chunk" on outer edges of tire. Rear tires are still in good shape and wearing evenly at 7/32 tread depth. Dealer at fremont, CA acknowledge this is a known issue and will not replace tires after 12,000 miles. Per dealer report, lf and rf are "5+ cupping". Dealer service advisor recommended to call goodyear. Call goodyear toll free number to file a warranty claim. Goodyear also acknowledge Audi is aware this is an issue on vehicle and provided a warranty claim number. Very surprised both goodyear and Audi acknowledge there is a design defect but dealer is not willing to replace tires under manufacture warranty especially since car is drifting to the right under normal driving conditions. Drifting could be a safety issue and potentially create an accident.
After 10k miles we started noticing abnormal wear on the outside of the tires. I have the 18" goodyear runflat tires. The tires are chunking severely posing a serious safety concern for my family. Audi has a TSB for the same condition on the 20" tire. I do not know why the do not cover the same condition on the 18" tire??.
