No reverse, transmission does not engage reverse gear.
'2000 BMW 323i, 108k, transmission would not engage in reverse. Engine revved up, but no engagement. This is so far intermittent and has taken place three times within 1 week. All other gears appear to work fine. All instances I had to manually push car out of packing spot. Took to repair shop and reverse worked at the time so could not determine fault. I have since seen many identical reports listed on web.
Car fail to engage to reverse while stuck in an situation. With the zf transmission on the 2000 3 series, the reverse drum is made of aluminum and very easy to crack, each time it cracks, you are not able to engage the car in reverse at all. To have this problem fixed, you either need new transmission or I heard there is a new reinforced drum that fixed the issue, my concern is over thousands of people have the same issue and each time it costs 4 or 5 thousand to fix because of the faulty part inside the transmission, why are there still no recalls yet? this is a pretty dangerous situation when your car can't move backwards and you are stuck in the lot, please read my reference link, as this is my 3rd transmission. I was parked facing downhill in my 2000 BMW 323ci when I selected reverse to back out of my parking spot. The reverse gear did not engage and the car rolled forward unexpectedly striking the car in front of me. Fortunately, damage was inconsequential (a few scratches/scuffs), but had there been a person in front of me, that person would have been seriously injured. The reverse gear has failed completely and without any warning. My BMW dealer says the car needs a new transmission at 60k miles!.
Transmission failure on a 2000 BMW 323i. The car simply will not engage in reverse. This is a very common problem that BMW knows about but refuses to acknowledge. Something must be done.
Reverse gear started not engaging and finally has given out completely. All other gears work fine and engage properly. Car has always been properly serviced and maintained. There are currently 93,000 miles on the vehicle, average for its' age. It is very frustrating to have to push this otherwise wonderful car out of our driveway!.
The car is a 2000 BMW 323i with 34,000 miles. There were no problems with the car/transmission prior to the reverse gear suddenly failing to engage while the car was in traffic and needed to be reversed to get out of the way of oncoming cars. The reverse gear continues to fail, although there are no problems driving forward. Dealer states the transmission must be completely replaced to fix the problem.
