Oil filter housing gasket leaked on to alternator causing the alternator to over heat and melt internal components which causing lack of power and multiple false check engine codes to come on and smoke clouded my view while driving so very common problem is the heater core leaking too.

When I push the brake for a complete stop, it will stop but miliseconds after that I will get jumpy. It is a safety concern for someone that is not used to the vehicle, it feels like the car is about to hit another vehicle in front of it. It happens when there is a traffic light or when I am going to park my vehicle.

I have a 2003 325i when coming to a stop with the foot on the brakes (lightly), as the transmission downshifts I can hear a thud/clunk coming from the rear end of my car along with a increase in the rpm's. I also hear it as soon as I let off my foot of the gas pedal or accelerate causing my car to not drive properly and my transmission to hit my suspension very hard. So, I've searched this issue and other BMW forums and found that other people had the same complaints and this exact problem which is dangerous & very scary.

After you enter 5th gear, the shifter will not return to the neutral position and prevents access to 3rd gear. This will ultimately cause the driver to downshift into the incorrect gear causing engine damage, damage to the gearbox, and/or cause an accident while driving during certain conditions.

My car was functioning perfectly fine the morning of the incident. I went into a restaurant and when I came out and got into my car and tried to back out of the parking lot my car would not move. The engine would rev up but no movement. I pushed it out and put it into drive and the car works fine but there is no reverse. I took it into the dealership and they told me that it is a transmission problem and the entire transmission has to be replaced. The quote I was given is $6000! my car high books at $5400. I have searched the internet and found that this is a very common occurrence for these cars and BMW refuses to recognize it as a problem. Now I'm stuck with a car that I can't afford to fix nor do I want to put more money into the car than it will ever be worth. I need help!.

My vehicle one day decided to stop going in reverse. It acts as if it is in neutral even though the display shows it is in reverse. Nothing of my doing would cause this. The vehicle has been meticulously maintained and there were no signs of trouble. I did extensive research to find out that BMW outsourced their transmission to france through gm from the years of 1999-2003. The faulty transmissions through gm were recalled however BMW being a third party never took responsibility. I have sorted through hundreds of pages of consumer reports stating different mileages that are experiencing or did experience the "no reverse" problem. It is very evident that this is not about driving habits and it is a widespread issue that BMW denies any part of. I may be facing several thousands of dollars in repairs (along with many other disgruntled BMW owners) for defective equipment. Please assist us consumers in holding BMW responsible for their actions. They cut a corner and it is the consumer that is paying for it. Immoral, unethical, unsafe and certainly poor business tactics.

My car's transmission light came on so I pulled over to the side of the road. I turned the car off and on but the warning light wouldn't go away. After the car was turned on, it would not shift into drive even though I could hear that the engine was running. I had to have the car towed and was informed by the dealer that my transmission would need to be replaced. This would cost approximately $6,500-. It seems that several BMW owners have had similar issues with the transmission. This is a huge safety concern since I was on a 2-lane highway through mountains without any cell phone reception.

Vehicle routinely stalls when engine is cold and car is placed in reverse. We back out of the garage and go over the slight bump at the threshold, and the car stalls and must be re-started. Seems as if engine is idling very high as well. Once re-started, the car seems to run ok.

Xenon lights went out shortly after the 50,000 mark. Shortly after car kept going into fail safe mode, kept getting low voltage readings on diagnostics. One BMW dealers kept telling me I needed to rebuild transmission. All they would do is plug the car into the computer and see the tranny reading on the scanner. The reason there was a tranny reading was because the car was in fail safe mode. I eventually had the tranny rebuilt and I still had the same issue. I would cycle the ignition and restart the car and car would drive fine. It keeps going into fail safe mode everytime I start the car. Its harder to get it out of fail safe mode in the winter with colder starts.

Problems with transmission on 2003 BMW 325i. While driving the vehicle's transmission lagged followed by surging when shifting from park, neutral, reverse then drive when the engine was cold. Initially the dealer indicated that the transmission needed to be replaced, but three months later it was determined that the transmission needed to be reprogrammed. The dealer has not contacted the consumer in almost 2 weeks to perform this service.
