BMW 328 owners have reported 6 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When I start a trip my car makes an strong noise on the back. I'm pretty sure it comes from the rear differential axle-final drive assy. My car has 123206 milles. I usually make any maintenance on time. I'm really worry about this strong noise, cause this car is driving everyday by my wife with our baby inside.

Rear driver's side subframe mount point failure. The car has gone through class action suit in 2009, and was inspected by BMW in 2010--was told everything is ok and it will not fail since only ones with visible defect will fail. But mine failed anyway 5 years later. This shows even if the damage/defect is not visible it can manifest itself at any time. I was driving about 20mph on city streets going straight, accelerating from a stop, shifting gears from 2nd to 3rd when a loud explosive bang was heard from the rear with an alarming jolt that triggered an interial lock on seatbelts, made all occupants scream in shock and children crying. Inspection of undercarriage revealed that the floor pan where the rear driver side subframe attaches to has completely shattered, leaving driver side of the subframe, differential, and rear axle floating with chunks of sheetmetal from mount point missing. I have been advised by two independent mechanics that this is a dangerous failure and I should not be driving the car, and the only reason of failure is defect in the car. Mechanics believe this failure poses serious safety hazard saying it can easily separate the rear axle and if this happens while driving, the separated rear axle will pull on the emergency brake cable and lock it up, immediately stopping the car. If this happens on a freeway it can cause catastrophic collision incident, endangering lives. They were shocked the car was never formally recalled for safety. . Read more...

Under normal driving I started to hear and feel a 'clunk' type noise when engaging the car into gear. Took the car to my mechanic to inspect and he found some cracks in the rear subframe along with the differential mounts being pratically torn off.

Differential mounts to frame have 'torn away' @ 40k miles and a second time @ 60k00miles. BMW is fixing it a 2nd time and covering cost. Car is 4door, manual and otherwise has been the perfect car. Estimated time to fix at BMW is 4-5 weeks.
Rear differential failure at 33k miles while traveling at 65mph, causing loss of control and near accident with other vehicles. Bmwna states no liability for incident and ignores the factory warranty on a 2000 module year 3 series. I was required to pay for all damages and new parts. I have the original differential showing the shattered pinion gear. I was lucky someone else might kill someone on the road because BMW refuses to accept a problem.
