The passenger restraint system is malfunctioning, which may affect the airbag. It does not recognize that the passenger has their seat belt on. Red lights are flashing and it states that the passenger restraint system is malfunctioning. I feel that the manufacturer should provide repapirs for a safety system at no charge. Not sure if it is a bad sensor or what. This happens when the car is turned on and a passenger is seated with their seat belt on. Date below is approximate. I have not taken it into a BMW dealership yet because over the phone, they said it may cost about $1,400 to fix.

Passenger restrained system light came on. It is something very common in vehicles like mine. I heard a lot of people have the same issue as mine. It is very unfortunate because BMW should have an extended warranty regarding this issue.
Restraint system faulty warning came on.

As soon as the vehicle is started a warning will pop up for passenger restraint system malfunction caused by the seat occupancy sensor failing on the front passenger seat. The warning will stay on and not go away. A previous recall for similar year models has been announced but it didn't cover all affected vehicles due to similar sensors being used across all these year models. BMW wants to charge 1000+ dollars for this sensor repair due to them saying this is an unaffected vehicle. Without this sensor working properly, in the event of a collision, the passenger airbag could not deploy which can cause serious injury or death. BMW refuses to do anything about this without a recall announced, or without thousands of dollars being spent just for the safety of my passengers.

I am receiving a 'passenger restraint malfunction' message on my dash and the seatbelt and airbag light are stuck on. Online BMW states "the oc3 mat needs to be replaced. Check with your dealer, we extended the warranty on some models. " I checked with my dealer and this does not qualify. They will not cover this safety repair. I cannot safely have anyone ride in the passenger seat, and the seat ceases to move as well. My dealer states it costs $1350 to fix and they would need to order in the part and have my vehicle for 2 days. This is a safety issue. Safety issues should not have an 'expiration date' as to when the dealer will or will not cover it. The care is 7 years old and has 63,000 miles. This defect was covered for the 2006 and 2007 models and became a recall. I see online in forums others are experiencing this in the 2011 model. I am forced to pay a mechanic to fix this now.

Stopped after exciting freeway with traffic flow. SUV came up behind me and didn't stop and hit me from behind going 40-60 mph. Impact threw me back then headrest deployed and punched me in the back of head which I then hit searing wheel. Instantly felt pain in neck and head. Taken by ambulance to hospital. 2 c. T. Scans done, chest xrays, and 2 mris of neck and brain showing spinal stenosis of cervical region, bulge of cervical disc without myelopathy. I also sustained a concussion and whiplash which is still present as of today. Car totalled. One of doctors stated impact from headrest deploying was same as being punched in back of head from a 200 lb. Man.
Vehicle at approximately 36,000 miles started exhibiting an intermittent warning for passenger restraint system malfunction. BMW of ontario, CA diagnosed the issue as a faulty seat occupancy sensor, but declined warranty coverage due to vehicle age and exclusion from 3rd party warranty. This appears to be a fairly widespread issue based 1) many of the online owner forums cover this problem. 2) the problem is widespread enough to support several manufacturers making and selling bypass\emulator devices to circumvent the failed sensor. A critical safety device for controlling airbag deployment should not be failing so early or frequently.
Getting an intermittent passenger restraint system malfunction. It states the passenger airbag will be deactivated. The error is occurring when a passenger is in the passenger seat, and also now when the seat is empty. After searching this error message, this appears to be a common issue with different years and models of BMW.

Passenger restraint malfunction.
Every so often I get an error message that says 'passenger restraint system malfunction'. I know this is a common error message for BMW vehicles & their owners. I have taken it to the dealership and been told that it could be repaired at my expenses. . . Why?! when so many vehicles have the same issue and it's not user error. . . Time for a recall! come on!.
Getting "passenger restraint system" error for no apparent reason at all. I'm afraid the airbags won't deploy in case of accident.
While making a left turn, to proceed up the street leaving work, several malfunction lights displayed on the dash and than my car shuts down completely; no inside nor outside lights (it was dark outside), no dings or anything. I thought maybe I needed a jump. Called a CO-worker before he left work, whom also has a BMW. He said it was not a jump I needed and proceeded to go in the trunk to locate my battery. As soon as he was able to remove the plastic screws and wiggle the panel, trying to get it from under the wall panels that was holding it in place, all my lights came back on. However, a restraint system malfunction light remained on the dash. Thank god I was driving at a low speed and on a residential street, no cars around me nor had I made it to the hwy to head home, some 30 minute ride. I don't want to think of what could have happened! the restraint system malfunction is said to have something to do with the passenger side and the airbag. I feel I am driving in a very unsafe high costing vehicle, and either way, I, my passenger or someone else could seriously get hurt with this car on the road with these issues.
Driver restraint system malfunction keeps coming on since I purchased vehicle and hendrick BMW has tried to repair my car multiple times but issue still continues after multiple parts of seat and wiring has been replaced and air bags removed and reinstalled.
Passenger restraint malfunction. Nhtsa campaign number 13v564000. My vehicle matches the criteria exactly. Sport seats. Yet BMW claims it is not applicable to VIN. A simple internet search shows a flood of people having the exact same issue yet they are all being denied by BMW even though their vehicles fit the exact profile of the recall.

Car has a passenger restraint system error. This appears to be a very common problem. Warning comes on as soon as the car is started until the vehicle is shut down. The airbag may or may not deploy in the event of a crash.
