Steering Problems of BMW 328 - part 1

Received recall notice 5 months ago from BMW. Why is it taking so long for them to address this issue?.

BMW issued a recall 10/23/2023 for vanos assembly (engine) bolts and I have been trying to get my vehicle repaired since January 2, 2024 when my care started having a rough running engine with the check engine lamp illuminated and the car was barely maintaining speed on the interstate. I was fearful of having a wreck or being run over by the other cars since my car was not responding to giving it gas to accelerate on the road. I have contacted BMW on 1/2/2024, 4/15/2024, and gain today 5/21/2024 and they are telling me the remedy is still not available. I had groves automotive, a certified BMW repair shop, who are my automotive repair shop call for the repair too. My car was just serviced at groves in the last 3 weeks and passed inspection. The check engine warning lamp came on again this morning while driving to work and again the vehicle was not able to accelerate and was running very rough. I am fearful of my safety and the safety of others when I have to drive back and forth to work.

I got up to leave my house and entered my vehicle and proceeded to start my car. I started it and moved the gear shift so that I can reverse out my driveway. With my foot on the brake I attempted to put the car in reverse and soon as I took the car out of park, my car accelerated forward and the brakes completely locked up. It accelerated so hard and fast that it broke through my gate and knocked down my other gate. I turned the car off when it accelerated because the brakes locked and even with the power off the car accelerated. There is no possible way my foot was on the gas because I was pulled in my driveway facing my house and had that been the case I would’ve went backwards not forward. The very second I took the car out of park it accelerated forward and would not stop. Luckily I thought to turn it off as a last resort and even then it continued to accelerate and knock down my second gate as well. I was very scared and as a safety precaution, I will no longer drive the car. Had I been anywhere but home this could’ve caused serious injury to myself or others and had it been parked a few feet over it would’ve accelerated into my living room where my son was sitting.

The contact owns a 2009 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while driving on a highway exit ramp at a moderate rate of speed, the steering wheel had harden without warning. The contact used excessive force to steer the vehicle home. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where they discovered metal shavings found in the steering pump. The dealer informed her that they were unaware of how the failure occurred; however, upon investigation, the contact linked the failure to the takata airbag recall(NHTSA campaign number: 16v071000) that included her vehicle. The contact believed that the metal shavings that could be deployed from airbags may have entered her steering pump. The manufacturer had yet to be notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.

The steering rack in the car failed prior to 100,000 miles. BMW has had issues from models 2012 to 2015 and recalled their steering racks. The same issue was happening in the 2016 year.

You guys have aluminum bolts that hold down the cylinder head they corrode or become loose thus pulling up the cylinder head and the head gasket is protruding out the front of the cylinder head causing oil and coolant to leak on to the belt causing the serpentine belt to slip off while it's raining and eventually causing a blown head gasket it's because of the aluminum bolts on the top of the engine that hold the cylinder head down the head gasket protrudes out the sides on the front where the camshaft sensors are and leaks onto the belt plus causing the belt to come off the track and possibly get sucked into the engine it's not something easy to get to or to fix for a person with low income.

Car doesn’t hold a battery wants to start 2% of the time engine shook the pulley off so have troubles steering it’s under recall for a few things I would love a new car from BMW because this one is a nightmare the BMW tech advised me not to drive it so have been carless all year pretty much.

The contact owns a 2014 BMW 328i. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the steering wheel locked up not allowing the contact to turn the steering wheel. The contact stated the chassis stabilization warning light was illuminated on the control panel. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it has yet to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 13v454000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

Tl the contact called on behalf of a client who owns a 2015 BMW 328i. The contact stated that while the vehicle owner was starting the vehicle, the vehicle loss power steering functionality. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle owner had the vehicle towed to a. R. T. S. Auto service (1899 grand central Ave, horseheads, NY 14845) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that corrosion caused the steering rack to separate and detached. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,115.

After the vehicle had been driving for about two hours I drove onto a highway. As the vehicle approached speeds over 65 mph the steering wheel became "notchy" almost as if it was jumping from 15-20 degrees but not smooth. It became incredibly difficult to drive and change lanes. It seemed almost like an electrical problem and not mechanical. Once I exited the highway and went below 40mph the steering returned back to normal smooth operation.

My vehicle began making a very defined rattling sound over small cracks and bumps in the road and the steering became extremely sensitive at the same time that problem occured. I took it in to get an alignment at belle tire, and it is up to spec. I took the vehicle to a BMW and nobody is able to figure out the issue. When driving on a highway or street, the car tends to pull in one direction. The car has not been in a crash, and it only started occuring after a a year of ownership. The car feels very unsafe and "sensitive" to steering. It is very challenging to stay in the center of the lane will sway left and right.

When turning left or right, the power to the wheels is not engaged. However, when the tire is straight, the power engages. This action prevents you from driving normally. To drive, you have to straighten out the wheel straight. Then as you increase velocity, you make your turn. Can be very unsafe as you are driving if this happens (breaks) on the road.

Failure of electrical assist power steering (eps) while vehicle stationary - 2013 BMW 328i, 89,500 miles upon startup, while turning steering whell tomove car, steering system emitted whining noise, bangs and thumps, then high pitched whine. All power steering was lost, and car had to be towed to BMW dealer. Diagnosis was mechanical failure of bolts holding power steering box to the steering rack, thus causing damage to both components. Damage required entire steering system to be replaced at $5k+ cost. Cause, as diagnosed by BMW dealer: extensive corrosion of aluminum bolts holding components together caused boot failure and subsequent component damage. Nhtsa issue: unsafe component design, as bolt failure at high speed could cause catastophic accident. Remedies: 1) NHTSA require general recall of all affected vehicles for bolt checking and replacement if corrosion present. 2) NHTSA require BMW to provide type 316 stainless steel fasteners with suitable dis-similar metals protection where safety-critical components exposed to roadway salt exposure. 3) if the above is not warranted due to small number of affected vehicles, NHTSA require BMW to issue service notice for all affected VIN numbers to check condition of steering box mounting bolts as part of standard interval maintenance procedure. Attachments: pictures of two affected units: my 2013 328i coroded power steering unit, and a similar on from a 2012 328i, downloaded from enthusiast forum on internet, suggesting a pattern.

The car now has approximately 50,000 miles on it. The steering wheel has increasingly deteriorated, becoming very sloppy and eventually led to a knock in the steering wheel rack. It is well documented in hundreds of online chats, videos and forums, that BMW has been changing the entire rack. They have recently released a kit with and upgraded bushing to repair the rack, thus acknowledging a common issue due to a failing thrust arm bushing. The original bushing is plastic and smooth, the new bushing is metal and rigid.

I purchased my vehicle and my 3rd top center brake light has never worked. My tires the tread seems low and I should have had new tires on the car when I purchased it. The steering seems more difficult when turning than it should be. Also I didn't receive 2 keys. My owners manual says I should receive 2 keys. I also had to order my owners manual and my car didn't come with it's owners manual.

Steering wheel is locking up which causes the car not to start. BMW has a service bulletin on it but it has not been recalled.

My car burst into flames ahile driving down the highway. The electrical system went off immediately and I was trapped in car. A nearby passenger broke my window to me out. If it wasn't for the man I would have lost my life!!.

I have a problem with BMW 328i my steering wheel, it is blocked and I can not turn it on or move and I think that is BMW problem because those parts are very expensive and it is not something that we customers have to pay for something that is defective of fabric.

At stop light, warning on the dashboard "drive moderately, increased steering effort required. Consult service center. " the steering was very tough to rotate and it created panic. After a couple of hours, restarted car and the steering was more manageable. Dealer came back suggesting the car needs "reprogramming" and despite under BMW platinum extended warranty 236 usd was charged . Should have been covered or an outright recall instead of charging as if it is a feature. I would request NHTSA to look into the matter and make BMW responsible for such mistakes instead of consumer paying. I could have been in an accident on the freeway for a software bug which BMW created. If this is how BMW intends to make money of service, it is a serious corruption and should be investigated. Suspension fault when drive feels like the car its lowered and feeel everithyng with no reason and the stavility its wear I almost kill myself BMW have to check this error on suspension oxnard California 93033.

On the way home yesterday a red warning light "steering wheel with a pad lock on the top left corner" came on, after parking at home I got the manual out and found that this is an electric steering-wheel lock fault and now the car will not start. This is an issue with most BMW's manufactured between years 2006 to 2007. I learned about the issue when I did a search in BMW forum's. Both european and north american markets are effected with this fault.

Tl the contact owns a 2007 BMW 328i. While driving approximately 30 mph and approaching a stop sign, the vehicle lost power and the steering wheel seized. When the vehicle was restarted, the service engine soon indicator illuminated and the failure recurred. The contact called BMW of wilmington at 910-338-2149 (located at 4920 new centre dr, wilmington, nc 28403) and the technician recommended a diagnostic test. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.

Driving my car for short distance makes engine hot and smell electrical wire burning. The same model and year with different VIN has recall of problem described. Attached photo describes same problem I have. Please provide a solution.

I was driving on a busy highway between 70-80 mph. The engine stalled and I was unable to press the gas. I managed to get the car off on an exit due to momentum. After sitting in a parking lot for 30 minutes, the car cranked back up without any issue. The stalling issue has occurred twice.

BMW would not start causing me to jump start my car. Upon starting my car, message on screen says that steering wheel lock malfunction. This happened today, may 18,2018 at 3:30. The car was stationary.

I left my car in my driveway for nearly 2 months without driving it over the winter months in new england. Upon starting the car on nicer weather, my steering wheel would not move. I can drive the car in a straight direction but the steering wheel just wouldn't budge. Had a BMW dealership diagnose the issue and fingers were pointed at hitting a pothole that caused impact and therefore damaged 4 bolts holding the steering rack to the motor. However, they could not figure out how I was driving it perfectly fine before storing it for winter, and how 3 bolts was already missing and the last bolt was corroding and eventually fell off. Nice, not a mechanical issue so not BMW's responsibility. This means I was driving the car with 1 bolt holding the steering rack to the motor for an unknown period of time. The car gave no warnings whatsoever and I am lucky that the last and final bolt held together until the car was not being driven. If the last bolt gave up when the vehicle was moving, then I may not have been so lucky. Why would an impact that strong, as described by the BMW technician, not fully rip apart the bolts? why was I able to drive normally for weeks without issues? how did it not cause any other issues around the wheel or suspension and only 4 secluded bolts were affected? what would have happened if all the bolts gave up while the car was being driven? how does a BMW cannot withstand normal impact with its fine german engineering? Ford had recently recalled almost 1 million vehicles because their bolts were faulty and would corrode under water/snow with salt. Tesla did the same recall earlier this year. Please note Tesla uses the same manufacturer for these aluminum bolts which are susceptible to corrosion as BMW.

The airbag light is on in red. The airbag is on recall for the takata recall airbag. The steering wheel with a lock sign over it is illuminated in red. The car was stationary the light illuminated and the car would not start all systems were locked including the steering wheel. BMW stated it will cost you $100 to put it on lift and an additional $100 for the diagnostic. I ended paying $100 for the diagnostic.

The engine light would come on, but nothing would be wrong with the car at least I thought.

I was driving the whole weekend and now my car won't start I changed the battery and now some red symbol is coming up and I had look it up on you tube and they are saying that my steering wheel is lock and I have no idea why because I was driving the night before and now my car won't start all because of some locked symbol.

I went in to have a routine oil change and was told to have a brake flush by the dealership. After leaving dealership I started experiencing problems with steering and brakes. They informed me to bring car back in to rectify the issue. As I was driving on the highway the brake system on the vehicle completely failed and the car has now become inoperable. They are refusing to fix it stating that the issue has nothing to do with the oil change and brake flush but would most likely be a persistent valve issues with this car. The car has two recalls in the past week and yet the dealership refuses to do anything about it. This car is unsafe to drive as I almost got into an accident on MD 495 heading toward silver spring. I have tried to work directly with BMW of silver spring and BMW of north America and they are refusing to address the issue.

I have steering wheel lock malfunction "electric steering wheel lock.

While driving BMW, 328i, 2007 on a heavily used highway, I attempted to make a turn to an off ramp when the steering wheel locked up. Fortunately due the angle of the wheels I missed a retaining wall and an island separating on-coming traffic. Unfortunately when I finally stopped I impeded traffic until a tow truck arrived (2 hours). This occurred at the turn-off of belt parkway (queens, NY) and van wyck expressway (entrance to jfk airport). On researching this problem on the internet I was surprised to see other Bmws having the same defect.

My 2007 BMW 328i, did not start and it showed that it had a lock sterring wheel. Also having issues with my driver side mirror being folded back world and did not allow me to position to a safe view. The vehicle was stationary. I could not start the vehicle because of the sterring wheel was locked.

I was driving my 2009 BMW 328i sedan on the highway during peak morning office hour (~ 07:45 am cst) on August 24th 2017 when all of a sudden the steering control started behaving weird. The steering wheel was not staying straight. It was going to the extreme left and right resulting in the car going all over the lanes by itself. I was scared and panicked at this sudden behavior of the car. Ultimately I hit the brakes and the car seemed to get back to control. I pulled over to the shoulder and got the car towed to my home. Note that the car was not driven for a month as I was on vacation. I am thankful to god that I am safe and didn't hit or get hit by another car!.
