BMW 330 owners have reported 24 problems related to body (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW 330 based on all problems reported for the 330.
Within days of purchasing the vehicle, multiple warning lights and safety-related alerts appeared, including repeated check engine warnings, an alert stating “driver assistance support reduced,” and a wrench indicator referencing an auto lighting and wiping system malfunction. While driving, the vehicle felt unstable and would sway side to side, making it difficult to maintain confident control. The vehicle was brought in for service shortly after purchase due to these concerns and was removed from my possession because of the seriousness of the issues. During the service process, I was informed that the vehicle had previously been involved in an accident and that a critical structural safety component (the front crash bar) was damaged. This damage had not been disclosed prior to purchase. The crash bar is a key part of the vehicle’s body structure designed to absorb impact and protect occupants in a collision. Driving a vehicle with damage to this component posed a potential safety risk. The combination of structural damage, reduced driver assistance alerts, visibility system warnings, and unstable handling raised concerns about crash protection, vehicle control, and overall safety. The issues were identified by the selling dealer during inspection after the vehicle was returned for service and are available for further inspection if requested.

I have been in the motorcycle industry 1988-2000 and the auto industry since 2000 to current, a break for about 10 years in there. I am fairly mechanically knowledgeable. On 8/1/2 was showing a customer a BMW 330i that we had in inventory. The customer sat in the driver's seat, started the engine and popped the primary hood latch. I was at the front on the vehicle. Since I deal with every make, model and years finding the secondary latch release can be challenging. Initially, I felt under the hood at the center, not finding it I proceeded to feel my way down both sides of the hood. Still not finding the release I inserted my right hand into the grill at first grill opening center right (drivers side). I was feeling inside to find the elusive release. About 1-2 seconds of feeling around I felt the a pressure against my hand. There isn't much space in the grill openings and very quickly I could not remove my hand in time, it was pinched between the vertical grill vent and, at that point unknown, active grill venting. My hand was stuck and the active grill venting continued to close since it indicated the cycle was not complete. I was stuck and it was very painful. My right was stuck in the first opening and I tried to overpower the electric motor with my left hand on the second grill opening (drivers side) I could not overpower it. I slowed it but it continued trying to close. I told the customer that I was stuck and in pain and that I needed help. I could not pull hand out since it was never intended to have a hand in there, the edges where sharp plastic on the inside, almost like a barb. It took me, being one handed and both his hands pushing on the vents to over power the system. Without the second adult male, I was trapped. Issues: 1. Excessively overpowered 2. No reverse sensor like auto up passenger windows 3. No break-away safety system.
My sunroof exploded randomly, without warning as I was traveling on the highway at approximately 65 mph. There was no impact from an object. The cloth cover beneath the sunroof was fully intact and undamaged after the incident.

Window broke while driving down highway. Right rear passenger window was being lowered. Hear what sounded like a cracking sound. Window stayed in the down position and could not be raised. Small child was seated in his car seat next to window. We were traveling on highway at a speed of 70 mph. (hwy 540). A thunderstorm began, no safe way to pull over for about a mile or two. 4 yr old child was scared, wet and hot (north carolina-summer). Child was not harmed, just very scared. Semi trailer trucks hauling by. Very busy time of day. Child was my neighbors son, I was helping pick him up from daycare because her other child was sick I bring this to your attention as this is the 5th window on this vehicle that this has occurred. Each time it has been jarring to say the least to hear glass cracking as you lower the window. I've had to leave my car open to the elements, thrived. Each time the cost to repair a window has been around $600. I go to very reputable repair shops here and in California. Things have been sucked out of the window due to the force of the wind. This is ridiculous. One incident was enough, but 5!!! I have owned many vehicles over the years and the windows don't have a problem. It scary and a major distraction for the driver. Unbelievable. BMW has a big problem. My first occurrence was in 2010 and they have continued though 1218. Currently the front passenger window is also make a glass scraping sound, so we just lease it up. That window had been replaced in 2010. . Something should be done about this. It's all over the internet, I don't have any photos to provide since I was always in such a hurry to get them fixed due to weather conditions. Please help this a big problem for us BMW drivers. (I'm glad the toddler in my car was unharmed, no broken glass got on him. My 1999 Ford expedition windows have no problems, even with my 3 boys using them.

All passenger doors except driver door cannot be unlocked or opened using any method--the key or any unlock button, or using either inside or outside door handles. This leaves only the front driver door openable. This is a huge safety risk. I can't drive the car this way--I would not be able to get my kids out of the back seat. It happens whether the car is running or not, and moving or not.
Vehicle window regulators had to be replaced for passenger and drivers windows (regulators were cheap). Driver side door lock failed. Passenger door locks failing. Passenger headlight fell out. Rear brake lights need constant repair. If one completely fills up the gas tank, gas fumes will be in the passenger compartment. Air conditioning fan needed replacement. Water pump failed. Instrument panel needed replacement.
The contact owns a 2001 BMW 330i. The contact stated that while stationary, all of the doors locked from the inside and the contact and his family could not exit the vehicle. As a result, the contact and his family required to exit the vehicle from the driver's side door. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 95,000.
Takata recall- I was driving and someone ran a stop sign and hit the vehicle on the drivers side door. Leaving the other cars emblem embedded in the drivers side door. Then continue to drag the vehicle. The entire drivers side is wrecked including the tire being turned in under the car. The drivers window shattered all over me but no airbags deployed.

Support strap for gas tank broke off on passenger side and was dragging on ground. Vehicle was in residential area and made loud metal dragging noise. The welds broke away from the frame leaving the gas tank unsupported on passenger side. Definite fuel fire hazard car is now in driveway until repair. This is my commuter car and dealer should fix. How is a gas tank supported by welds that simply break? design flaw. .
When stopped after driving, I attempted to exit the vehicle from the driver side door. The door would not open. The door was unlocked. I crawled out the passenger side. I tried to open the door from the outside. Same result. The driver side door now does not open by any means. Diver side door will not open utilizing key fob, from the inside and from the outside of the vehicle. From reading online posts, it seems to be an issue with others in different combinations. It could be the door handle cable or door actuator. Regardless, this is a dangerous situation, due to the fact that if the driver needed to exit the car immediately, driver would not be able to do so.
Tl- the contact owns a 2001 BMW 330i. The contact stated upon attempt to exit the vehicle, the driver side door would not open at all. The interior door handle could be pulled, however,it would not open the door. The contact then had to climb over to the passenger side door to exit the vehicle. The vehicle had not been taken to a mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures and the approximate failure mileage was unavailable. Gb.
Door relay system malfunction causes door to be inoperable, closed and locked. Potentially deadly if trapped in vehicle.
I tried to get out of my car but the drivers door would not unlock. Tried using the key, but it still won't unlock. I had to climb out the passenger door! door will not open at all!.
Vehicle was hit by another driver running a red light. The other driver centered on the driver's side front wheel but damaged the driver's side door and windshield. The driver's door airbag deployed. The driver's side airbag partially deployed. We could see hit hanging from the rear pillar to the front pillar but it was still tubular shaped and did not prevent the driver from hitting her head on the side of the car. The car was totaled. The front panel was compressed all the way to the engine compartment.
The contact owns a 2006 BMW 330xi. The contact stated that none of the doors would unlock except for the front driver’s door and the only way to exit the vehicle was through that door. In addition, on one occasion the contact was unable to unlock the vehicle using the key fob and he was forced manually unlock the door. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the door actuator failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was aware of the failure. No repairs were performed. The failure and current mileages were 57,000.
The passenger doors fail to open with the internal door unlock button. This is due to failure of door unlock relays in the gm5 module. This could result in a significant safety issue if a failure of the unlock relay happens when attempting to unlock passenger doors in an emergency to retrieve passengers.
When there is a power failure in the 2006 BMW 330i, in this case caused by a blown fuse, the doors will not open either by attempting to electronically unlock them or by using the door handles. The only way I was able to exit the car was to roll down the driver's side window and use a manual key on the outside of the car to unlock the door. In the event of a total power failure and the power windows failed as well, it would be impossible to exit the vehicle other than by breaking the windows. This is a very dangerous design flaw. There should always be a way to exit the vehicle without having to rely on the vehicle's electrical system.
Broken welds on fuel tank strap bracket on passenger side. Caused bracket to fall off and gas tank to hang low to an unsafe height from the ground. Dangerous to an unknowing driver who is not aware of the true danger of this failure. This is happening quite often on this '01 BMW 3 series from thread below. . Read more...
