37 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 335

Failure Date: 12/15/2015

Before I start my description I need to mention that my car has been serviced for all recall notices related to the vehicle make and model!! on December 15, 2015 my 2011 BMW 335i sport model stopped while I was driving. There was no warning messages for this issue. Several minutes prior to the car stopping I received a warning message that my wind shield wiper fluid was low. I was driving straight with traffic on a city street approximately 35-40 mph on a clear evening, no weather issues. The stearing wheel became hard to turn and when pressing on the gas pedal the car would not accellerate and it slowed down . I put my flashers on and moved to a safe lane where there we no cars driving, put the car in park, turned it off and removed the key from the ignition and waited for a minute. I checked my vehicle status menu to see if there were any issues, which there we none indicated. I put the key back into the ignition, pressed the gas and the car started. I drove about a quarter mile to a parking lot and called BMW assist to report the incident and ask if there was anything in the vehicle that could check that may have cuased this issue to occur. They were very helpful and I was told that there was nothing they could do at that time but I should bring the car to the dealer and have them check it. I took my car to the dealer on December 17th and waited while it was checked. They couldn't find a reason for the occurance. This type of issue is not stored on my BMW key with it happens. The issue has not occurred since 12/15/15 but I don't know if it will occur again during my city or highway driving. There must be a reason that the car stopped and I'm entering this issue in hopes that testing will be done on my model year to determine if this was cuased by a software or hardware issue. Please contact me if additional information is needed.

38 Equipment problem of the 2013 BMW 335

Failure Date: 12/08/2015

While parking car turning wheels to left, car suddenly accelerated on it's own without any warning, causing car to jump over parking bumper, through concrete block wall and continued to ram into private home, making home unsafe to enter. All this caused $14000. 00 damage to the car, not including the cost of damage to the wall and building. BMW dealership will not look into the accelerator cables etc. . . Says can't be an issue with this incident. This should be investigated further as safety of occupants / pedestrians and other vehicles could be in jeopardy! p. S. We have not driven the car yet since it has been at the BMW body shop since December 8 2015. Car is second owned by us. We bought car at 6k miles and now has 10k miles. Kind of scared of getting behind the wheel and driving the car.

39 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 09/15/2015

Vehicle caught fire after being parked for 20 minutes in a mall parking lot. Vehicle was destroyed.

40 Equipment problem of the 2009 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/21/2015

On 8/21/2015, I was driving my 2009 BMW 335d to work when it suddenly lost power and started spewing smoke on jefferson Ave. I pulled over near my work and saw smoke seeping in from the steering column. I exited the vehicle immediately and opened the hood and saw that the engine compartment was on fire. I ran inside my workplace and grabbed a fire extinguisher and cautiously returned to the vehicle. I was able to put out the fire. After filing a claim with state farm, the claims adjuster and plaza motor company BMW came to the determination that the car's wiring harness malfunctioned and that they're going to replace it. But that's not my issue. I'm concerned with how the fire started in the first place. Plaza motors nor state farm can tell me why or how it happened but they are willing to replace the defective part and have me drive the vehicle again without any assurances that this will never happen again. I was fortunate enough to had exited the vehicle before the car was engulfed in flames and I was also fortunate enough to had been close to a fire extinguisher. My complaint is that I feel like my claim is being handled in a very leisurely, run-of-the-mill manner akin to changing a flat tire or a dented bumper. But a car spontaneously catching fire is anything but typical. Plaza motors and state farm's casual nature is disconcerting to say the least. I do not feel safe driving this car ever again. I don't feel like BMW is taking any responsibility for their catch spontaneously catching fire. Also, one week prior to the fire, I had a diagnostics test conducted on my car by autohaus BMW in st. Louis, mo and the two minor issues were unrelated to the electrical fire.

41 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 335

Failure Date: 07/05/2015

The sunroof exploded for no apparent reason while driving on the freeway.

42 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 06/25/2015

2008 BMW 335i coupe purchased on July 15th, 2013 from carmax. Currently drivable but has major mechanical problems. The extended service contract is still under coverage and is valid at the BMW dealer or any carmax nationwide. When carmax can't fix the car it's hauled over to the BMW dealership to complete the repair and a check would be written by maxcare to the BMW dealer. The only problem is that I've had to take this vehicle in for major repairs several times and I'm not counting maintenance visits. Most of these major repairs were repetitive major jobs such as oil leaks, fuel pressure system, injectors. At one time my car ping ponged between carmax and BMW for close to 2 months. Consider the time I've owned this car for and how long and how many times it's been out of my possession. I was paying a car note for a BMW but driving around in a a base model rental car most of the time. I've got invoices/estimates where the car went in for major repair or diagnosis during these dates: 07/22/2013 05/30/2014 06/13/2014 07/01/2014 11/05/2014 06/25/2015 the repair invoice/estimate on 11/05/2014 was the biggest one. I was very frustrated with the amount of work being done on the vehicle so I got the car appraised to sell back to carmax and they told me $10,000 which I thought was ridiculous. The work done on that car amounted to almost $7,000 or more just on that one invoice which is 70% of the car value. Also, while the car was in the shop I acquired the history of the vehicle directly from BMW. The history stated that the car had oil leak repair at the pan and gasket and the automatic transmission had a leak in 03/06/2013 and the mileage for this record was completely off. As you can see the date of this diagnosis was a few months prior to me purchasing the vehicle.

43 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 05/05/2015

Sunroof exploded for no apparent reason. Was merging onto a highway in the onramp at about 45mph, very bright and sunny (but not hot, maybe 75f) day. Driver side window was open, a/c off, sunroof was closed, sunshade was also closed. Suddenly I hear what basically sounds like a gunshot right above my head, and since having already heard about this phenomenon happening on a car forum (e90post. Com) I regularly visit, I instantly guessed what had happened. I look in my rearview mirror and see large pieces of my sunroof bouncing along on the road behind me. Once I arrived at my destination and got out of the car, I saw the sunroof had exploded outwards. The broken glass was curved up around the hole. From that same forum there are several theories floating around, the one most people seem to agree on as being most plausible is there's a heat/pressure difference between the sunshade/sunroof and the outside of the car. The negative pressure on the outside + the increase of heat under the glass is enough to stress whatever imperfection might have already been in the glass and literally suck it out.

45 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 03/16/2015

Passenger safety restrain system malfunctions, when a passenger is sitting in the passenger seat, the system malfunctions. This means the airbag will not deploy should there be a crash. This very issue is a cause of a recall by BMW in 2008, but this model is not currently covered despite this being a very common issue with this model.

48 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

When I started at the car noticed a electrical burning smell and smoke after a while it was gone and it came back. Also driving the car on the highway smell was present.

49 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 335

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

After starting the car, the center console gave an error message "engine malfunction. Engine operating at reduced output. Possible to continue. Drive with caution. Have the system checked by the nearest BMW center. " the car could not go more than 2mpg and the entire car was shaking. I turned the car off and turned it back on and it did the same thing. I took it to the BMW center and I am waiting to get it back. They claim it had something to do with the fuel pump or the fuel injectors and the detection of ethanol in the gasoline.

50 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 10/18/2014

2007 BMW e92 335i - just took off from my home (car was not turned on since the day before atleast not after 8pm) 10 minutes into the road I turned on my a/c blower on max. On about 2 or 3 minutes, suddently it slowed down and stopped working followed by plastic burning smell. As I tried to pull over as soon as possible, smoke started coming out the dashboard and just like that the car caught fire on the glove compartment and so on. . . I stranger from an tire shop ran up and used an extinguisher to stop the fire. Saddly there was severe damage to glove comparmtnets, dashboard, electrical components like fuse box, passenger door, front and top interior. Plus some money I had stored in the (was my way to the bank to make a deposit and pickup my fiancee) im still waiting for my insurance descision. Im very worried since ive search around in forums and I've read about some other people having same problems and other electrical fires with no response/resolution from BMW. I've owned a Mini cooper and 2 Bmws. My cousing, aunt, granpa (e30) have Bmws. Any suggestions?.

51 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

I parked the car at work at 7:30 am. At noon a CO-worker notified me that my car was filled with smoke in the cabin. I went outside and saw this and immediately called the fire department. I waited for them to show, and opened the door as smoke poured out from the cabin. The fire department said there was an active fire in the glovebox. It looks like it started around the blower motor for the ac and the fuse box . My insurance company declared the car a total loss.

52 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

While driving at highway speeds for 15-20 minutes, the yellow engine overheating warning light came on and quickly turned to red, within 5 seconds. The car lost the ability to accelerate and my speed quickly began to slow. There was no response from the car when depressing the accelerator. I had to cross 3 lanes of traffic with no acceleration which nearly caused several accidents. My car was rolling to a stop on he highway. I turned the car off for several minutes and everything seemed to be fine. However, this has now happened multiple times. Each time while driving on the highway for 15-20 minutes.

53 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

I was driving my car getting on the freeway and the electrical system came on stating " engine temperature, engine temperature is high. Drive moderately to cool the engine. If temperature increases again. Have the system checked by your BMW dealer ship. " I recently purchased this car on 6/9/2014 on the 30th day the car had this issue with me. The car turned off 4 times with me as I tried to drive back home. My 2008 BMW 335i series was purchased with only 60,000 miles on it. I need to know if this is recall so I can take it in . . Been doing some research and seen that alot of BMW customers are having the same issues but years ago. . . . I need help cause when I called the dealership they look up the VIN # and say there is no recall on this car. . . . Help I dont know what to do?????? I been back and forth with Chrysler in clovis CA where I purchased the car and they want to charge me $1500. 00. . . .

54 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 335

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I bought this 2011 BMW 335d used in April of 2014 with only 18,500 miles on it. This car runs on diesel. As soon as I started driving the car on the daily basis I noticed a smell of sulfur or exhaust inside the cabin. Every time I drive the car and especially when I accelerate I can smell it with the windows closed. It never goes away and is very distinctive in its nature. I took the car to the dealership and they found and fixed some oil leak but it did not resolve the issue with the smell. I think the smell could have a long-term negative effect on my health and I think BMW must resolve this issue. I just canã¢t believe no one else has this problem. To me it looks as if there was a leak in the exhaust system and the gas enters the cabin.

55 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 02/05/2014

I was driving on I-405n at around 70 mph, the pace of the very light traffic that night, and there were no other cars within 100 yards in front of me. There were no overpasses or pedestrians anywhere nearby. All of a sudden, my sunroof spontaneously shattered! a large piece of it broke off and then was blown backwards, bouncing off my roof and trunk, scratching the paint. The person driving behind me drove over the sunroof and shards of glass. Luckily, I had my sunroof sunshade closed which prevented the shards of glass from showering on me when the sunroof exploded.

56 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

2007 BMW 335i with sport seats, malfunction light for passenger seat occurs when seat is occupied, which deactivates air bags, this could be potentially dangerous, very disappointed that BMW refuses to fix this issue since there is a recall on this specific part for several models, unfortunately they have told us that our vehicle is 2 months outside of the manufacturers date for the recall even though our vehicle requires the same part number as other vehicles that where recalled.

57 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 09/11/2013

The car would not start as indicated on the recall. The battery was drained from the bad cables. I replaced the cables at BMW under the recall a d was charged for reprogramming. To replace the connectors it would need reprogrammed and I feel the battery should be included in their recall. There are several similar complaints on this issue. The lights worked and all other functions just would not start. BMW advised it needed a new battery but would not include on the recall even though its a known problem. If they had to replace the cable they would have to reprogram it either way, new battery or the existing battery as they would not leave it "hot" while working on it.

58 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 335

Failure Date: 09/11/2013

9/11/2013 at approximately 9:25 am est my 2008 BMW 335i spontaneously caught fire from what seems to be an electrical problem in the dash board area. I was making my daily commute to work when the ac unit shut off and then turned back on with thick black smoke pouring into the cabin of the car. Naturally I rolled the windows down to allow the smoke to clear so that I could pull over out of traffic. This made matters worse, the smoke thickened, the horn started honking as if someone was holding the horn down, as I was pulling the car over to the side of the road the smoke became unbearable, I was fortunate to escape the car as the fire ripped into the cabin consuming the entire vehicle within just minutes. The car is now totaled and my insurance is investigating. My query is what if I had other people in my car? what if my car was in my garage? what if I had younger children in the car? judging on how quickly the car was engulfed in flames I know for a fact that even in my very able condition removing two young children from the back seat of the car would have been impossible, this needs to be looked into! seeing as BMW's targeted audience is middle to upper class families I wonder if the public knows of the risks? I know I sure didn't, however after reviewing the blogs and posts online I have seen countless other scenarios unfold almost identical to mine and I know I am not alone. I am currently dealing with my insurance and I am sure they will be in touch with BMW as the car was still under 100,000 miles and just at 5 years of age.

59 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

When parked listening to music, my brother plugged in the usb adapter and it electrocuted him ever since he's scared to be in the vehicle. Well right after the incident the cigar igniters to plug in the adapters wouldn't work anymore. I had just got this car from a dealer as a trade in 3 months ago and I noticed really strong smells of gas from the back seat and my siblings sit back there and that really concerns me. Along with the smell of gas, my coolant reservoir starting spilling out brownish fluid like if a gasket was blown and oil got into the coolant ! I am very irritated I'm being charged thousands that I don't have and only have had the car for a few months. My warranty would not fix any damages, and dealership is not helping me out. I need to go to work and school and I have no transportation at the moment.

60 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 07/21/2013

Driving normally, about to make a turn onto a street my power steering fails and I get a light on the dashboard about battery charging malfunction. Upon further investigation it turns out my accessory belt that drives the ac compressor, power steering pump and alternator was completely shredded and not on the pulleys. I have damage to multiple pulleys in my car. My power steering pulley is missing big chunks because of impact with the sub-frame. This is a known service bulletin ( sib 11 09 08 ) the power steering pulley impacts the sub-frame because of motor movement when hitting bumps etc. . This caused my belt to be ripped into shreds and break off big chunks of my power steering pulley.

61 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

I drove to the gas station left car alone for no more than 5 minutes. And when I come back I try to start the car and tries to start but doesnt have the power too, then I get a jump start and drive home and the next day same things happen. Battery was changed out by shop just about a week ago.

62 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 02/23/2013

All doors except driver door are locked and cannot be open by passenger from inside using door handle; cannot be opened using the door lock switch on the dash board; cannot be opened using the key fob; cannot be opened from the outside door handle. Therefore all passengers have to exit through the driver door. Once being locked from the outside, the drive has to use the backup key in the key fob to unlock the door. This is a serious safety issue regarding exiting the car in emergency situation.

63 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 02/20/2013

On 20 Feb 2013, we were driving on a highway in san francisco. Traffic in front of us slowed to a stop and we also stopped. We were then struck hard from behind by another car that hit the right-rear part of our bumper. Immediately after the impact, all interior and exterior lights in our car flickered and became very dim. We discovered later that the impact had damaged the car¿s battery, evidenced by electrolyte leaking out of the underneath, rear of the car. After the collision, traffic began moving again and the other driver moved his car off the roadway, leaving us sitting in the middle of a busy, 5-lane freeway after dark with no lights of any kind in or on our car. The emergency flasher flickered dimly, but was not working. All the head and tail lights were dark. Police eventually arrived and pushed our car to the shoulder. I waited inside our car while the driver spoke with the police. As I waited, the door locks suddenly latched and the alarm started. It was impossible to unlock the car from the inside. The door handles were completely non-functional. The windows would not open. I was trapped inside the car. People outside the car were unable to help me escape. A tow-truck driver asked me to release the hood latch. He attached a battery pack to some terminals in the engine compartment and when the interior lights came on, I was able to unlock the door and leave the car. Then he disconnected the battery pack and the car went dark. If there had been a fire or an injury, this would have been a very serious situation. As an engineer I see two, no-cost solutions to this problem. (1) surround the battery with a strong barrier and move it farther away from the rear of the car. (2) include a mechanical link to the door latches so that the doors can be opened from the interior of the car when the battery is disconnected.

64 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

2007 BMW 335xi floor mats are not anchored or attached to floor in any way. Floor mays constantly slide back and forth, as they are smooth on the bottoms. The drivers side mat will often cause clutch pedal not to release when shifting, as the mat obstructs the pedal from releasing. This issue was reported to local dealerships and I was told there was nothing that would be done.

65 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 335

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

The thermostat was failing to cool the vehicle under extreme heat conditions (over 100 degree days), took vehicle in to check the thermostat, but it was only a 90 degree day when they looked at the car, and were "unable to reproduce problem", so they returned the vehicle. About 6 months later, I took vehicle in to check the thermostat when the vehicle was unable to warm up under extreme cold conditions (under 30 degree mornings). Again, "unable to reproduce problem" because when the mechanics got to work in the morning, the temperatures were over 40 degrees. Other than extreme conditions, the thermostat seemed to work fine. But the following year, on a cold morning, not only did the vehicle fail to warm up, but the "check engine" light came on. By the time I was able to make an appointment and bring the car in, the light had gone out, and again, the service dept. Was unable to determine what made the "check engine" light come on. They said it must be an "intermitent problem". Yes, it was!! and the light came on another time, but I was out of town, so that by the time I got back, again it had gone out. The problem finally got bad enough for the light to come on again, and this time I drove the vehicle directly to the dealership w/o turning it off, so they could determine the problem. They finally confirmed there was indeed a problem with the thermostat, like I had told them all along, and they replaced the thermostat. When I got home and checked the internet, I found many complaints about this same problem with my engine in this model BMW. And BMW has not made a recall to to repair the item. This is a known and frequently recurring problem that BMW should be made to pay for &/or reimburse customers for expenses they incurred in fixing the problem, just like the fuel pump and battery problems for this same model vehicle that were fixed under recalls!!.
