I bought a BMW on November 3rd and within 48 hours on the 5th of November at 6:30 the engine seized while the car was driving when I took it to BMW they did a carfax on it, it said the car had 197,000 miles on it and the car was listed with 97,790 miles and the odometer still says 97,000 and the transmission is also slipping because it had 197,000 miles on it and the font headlights won't work.

I recently was advised by BMW that my valve cover had a leak as well as a rear axle. I feel that after only 8 years and less than 80,000 miles those component should not be failing so soon. My biggest complaint is that I recently had my power steering system completely fail on me. I was able to limp my car home and turn it off to let it sit for 15 minutes which the dealer recommended. I started the car back up and it has been working fine. The dealer inspected the vehicle and advised that I should have the entire system replaced for a little under $6,000. My largest concern is that the steering system is going to give out when my wife is driving the car or when we are hundreds of miles away from a dealer to fix it. The aggravating portion of this is that there is a recall for this issue on 2015-2017 SUV's and the 4 series (recall 16v-704) and BMW will not cover the costs for repairs. I'm currently talking with BMW north America to see if their good will repair program will cover it but I still believe that the electric steering should not go out after only 8 years and less than 80,000 miles.

My vehicle functioned normally without any faults for the approximately year and a half/ ~20,000 miles I used it. The one day I attempt to start my vehicle in colder weather (-6 degrees fahrenheit) and my starter fried and my engine seized up. I have heard of other occurrences like this happening where BMW owners attempted to start their vehicles in colder weather, have a fault come up as "starter/ignition malfunction" and then leading to an engine seizing. I believe this to be a faulty product from BMW.

This incident happened twice while I was driving. After driving for about 20 minutes my 2013 BMW 335i (sedan) shifted into neutral as I was making a turn. I was shown a drivetrain malfunction error along with an error that my car was not in park position and my car's motor suddenly shut off while it was in neutral. I pulled over to the side of the road and I managed to start my car again without any problem. A few weeks later while I was driving on the I-10 driving past banning, CA. My vehicle shifted into neutral and my motor shut off. I had to make an emergency stop on the side of the freeway and I managed to restart my car and drive to my family's home. My girlfriend and I were in the car at that time and this sudden shut off of my motor could have caused us to get rear ended on the freeway. When I got back home I scanned my car using an obd ii reader and found 0 faults pertaining to the transmission. I did find the following codes: 11a002 fuel high pressure, plausibility pressure too low and 101f01 throttle valve angle-absolute pressure intake pipe, comparison pressure too high. I had my mechanic inspect and drive my vehicle, but he couldn't determine the cause of the error. He suspects there is something wrong with the fuel pump, but he was hesitant to say that is problem. Car ran fine at full throttle while testing and I have not received another error code since then. My vehicle has an 8-speed automatic transmission and in both instances when it shifted into neutral, my hands were not on the gear selector. My vehicle is available to be inspected and I have been unable to reproduce the problem. Other BMW owners stated they experienced the same problem. . Read more...

Transmission failure, while driving 45mph the car automatically downshifted then stopped pulling rolled to a complete stop was able to put into park turn car off then when tried to restart that is when the transmission failure light and notice came on the dash and radio screen. After that the car would not go into any gear or pull in any gear. No warning signs appeared before the incident.
Positive battery cable heat up cause fire above battery. Blow off wire worked blowing off. Distribution box and power pole connection sparking heating up causing arc fire. No recalls for my specific VIN but 2008 through 2012 recalls this part but not for my vehicle. 2009 335 convertible. ? $1132 to fix. 9 months ago 2021 BMW could not find problem recommended changing my alternator never recommended changing the recalled part that I am now having changed at my own expense. Very scary I have the car returned to me but I was only able to drive limited distances as the cable deteriorated I was limited more and more use of the vehicle until ultimately I drove to BMW to have it fixed and the wire exploded a mile before exiting the freeway very scary.

Loss of power failure, it lights up several times when turning corners and then accelerating.
I loved my BMW until I realized it has a faulty engine. I noticed the drive train malfunction light once when I went through a car wash. I turned off when I restarted the car. My car was up to date on all oil changes etc, I take it to BMW specialist only. I noticed a light tick sound and reported it to BMW at my last oil change. They disregarded it and said they did notice oil on the gasket. No changes requested at that time. My car never showed signs of leaking oil and the oil pressure at times showed to be low but would always return to normal. I was told it was because the hybrids work differently. On my way home on the frontage road of i35 my car just shut down and never restarted. I was able to guide it into a parking lot and the engine just stopped turning and the drive train malfunction light turned on. I had it towed to a mechanic and they basically said they had to replace the entire engine. A new engine cost $18000 and a used is around 13000. That does not include labor!!! I had to then have my car towed home to just park it. This is the only car I have, I owe thousands on it and the engine completely broke! as I'm doing research I see multiple complaints with the same issues and same result, complete engine failure!!! this needs to be investigated! from what I gather it is related to the drivetrain malfunction light sending a signal to the engine & stopping oil from reaching the top of the motor, leading to vanos complications and leading to metal in the engine leading to a complete damage to the engine. Cheap issue leading to failure of the entire vehicle. I've also gathered there is a fault with the start/stop that causes this issue. I am left with no car, I'm a full time nurse and now in debt with no working car! this could have been prevented had a recall been done a few years ago with all the initial complaints!! several forums including on this site!!.
While driving the car will automatically go into neutral. When idle too the car goes into neutral and you can't shift into drive. When driving on the highway it hits neutral and the car redlines, the car will coast down the highway until it hops back into gear.
Same as everyone else reports for powertrain/drivetrain drive moderately car goes into limp mode message drivetrain affected drive moderately when. Really struggles vehicle was just changed comfort to sport and 3/4 acceleration happened almost immediately.
The 2011 vehicle with less than 65,000 miles normal runs at highway speed in a range of 2k rpms. A warning regarding the transmission immediately caused the car to rev up to 5k rpm (very high for a diesel engine sedan) and the speed reduces 30-40mph while driving. It is incredibly scary and dangerous. Assumed this was a one-off. Pulled to the shoulder, turned off the car and it ran fine. Took it to BMW for inspection and they said they could not diagnose the problem but would replace the transmission and charge me more than half the value of the car. The issue has since repeated and is very dangerous to all on the road.
I took my car into BMW for 2 recalls after waiting 2 months for the parts after 6 hrs had passed they claimed to have the wrong parts ,when I went to pick up my car it had no power I couldn't drive it home . I paid $147 for diagnostic that was supposed to be complimentary and a repair bill of $3,478. 25 April 20 20018 . Last year I had to replace the axle do it not twisting like a wash rag.
Car stalled multiple times while driving. Each time it was a sudden death while driving. Every time got lucky that I was not followed by a truck and no one hit me from behind. Dealer replaced engine earlier, diesel pump and now dealer said reported all injectors failed. History: 1/5/17 - car stalled while in motion on city street - speed 30/hr 3/3/17 - car stalled again while in motion on highway - 50/hr 5/20/17 - check engine light - no stalling 5/31/17 - car stalled - on city street at red light. 2/13/18 - car stalled while driving - speed 50/hr 3/1/18 - car stalled - speed 15/hr - after stopping and starting at red light in city street. Downhill. No break . Started rolling down. Used hand brake. 3/7/18 - car stalled while driving in snow city street - speed 25 /hr repairs: 5/23/17 - egr cooler , injectors replaced 5/31 - 6/18 - car was at dealer and engine, intake manifold replaced. 2/13/18 - diesel pump replaced. 3/7/18 - car is with dealer - reports multiple injector failure.
The transmission malfunctioned while attempting to park. Car won't go in reverse, also car had no power to accelerate in drive mode. This was caused because the valve body sealing sleeve that is made of plastic broke.

The contact owns a 2011 BMW 335i. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 17v067000 (powertrain); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was unable to confirm when the parts would be available. The contact was advised to bring the vehicle to the dealer for inspection before the remedy parts would be ordered. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
The car has had numerous issues since purchased. This all came to a head when driving home, under normal conditions, it suddenly would not shift past 1st gear. I proceeded to pull off to a side street and attempt to idle home, as I was about 1 mile from home. After approximately . 5 mile, the transmission suddenly lost first gear, there was an audible bang under the hood, and the car completely lost power. After being in a service center for a couple weeks, I am now informed that the engine is locked down and that the car will require a new engine to be working again. This car had been an absolute nightmare and has turned me quite calloused towards Bmws quality standards.
Valve cover oil leaking onto exhaust manifold that causes fire. It was turned off and stationary. Asked BMW to change in 80k but they said just sweating oil. Safety hazard ignored. Common amoung BMW 3 series engine.
While driving on the freeway going to work, around 5:30 in the morning, the power train warning light came on the screen. . , while on sport mode selected I noticed that my rpm was close to 3k doing 65 mph. , the vehicle slowed down to 45 miles per hour and had no power. . , I was able to pull over the shoulder and tried several times to re-start the car to no avail. , I had the car towed to the nearest BMW dealership, and they diagnosed it as a bad high pressure fuel pump. They replaced the pump the same day, test drove it and everything is back to normal. The repair was covered under warranty, I sent the towing expenses to the BMW road side assistance for reimbursement. , said it will take a few weeks to get it in the mail. .
Drive train malfunction has occurred twice in which the cars output is minimized. We were on one highway, connecting with another and went to accelerated to merge with traffic and the car would not accelerate. Top speed was 40mph. The second time we could at least do 65mph. Occurred 7/5/16 and 9/19/16.
The vehicle started making a loud knocking sound while driving on the highway at approximately 65 mph. (video was taken) the oil pressure dropped, a battery indicator light flashed, the power steering went out, and the vehicle lost speed. I almost wreaked. I checked my steering wheel fluid and it was brown, an indication to me the power steering pump went out. A belt also snapped. I purchased an extended warranty that BMW is telling me does not cover the a/c compressor. I am being told that in order for BMW of fresno to make a proper assessment of the steering issue I first have to replace the a/c compressor at $2535. 34. As a fleet manager, I know my chain is being yanked.
Vehicle stalled on road way while going 50 plus miles an hour. Shutting off completely. Police were called. Could not get car to shift and move. Needed two different tow trucks to get dollies to move car. BMW replaced fuel pump. BMW says warranty on NHTSA for my year make and model does not apply to my vehicle. I am scared for my life. Felt like I was going to get killed as cars honked going 60 miles an hour around me at 830 at night on beach blvd.

While parking car turning wheels to left, car suddenly accelerated on it's own without any warning, causing car to jump over parking bumper, through concrete block wall and continued to ram into private home, making home unsafe to enter. All this caused $14000. 00 damage to the car, not including the cost of damage to the wall and building. BMW dealership will not look into the accelerator cables etc. . . Says can't be an issue with this incident. This should be investigated further as safety of occupants / pedestrians and other vehicles could be in jeopardy! p. S. We have not driven the car yet since it has been at the BMW body shop since December 8 2015. Car is second owned by us. We bought car at 6k miles and now has 10k miles. Kind of scared of getting behind the wheel and driving the car.
The vehicle stalled while accelerating through an intersection and stranded me in the intersection. I was unable to restart the car at first. It would not even crank. After several minutes of attempting to restart the car it finally responded and started. It stalled 4 more times driving a short distance to get the vehicle off the road. Car went in for service Thursday the 31th and was returned to me Saturday the 1st of August. Stalling issue is back and the car is now being towed in for service again. This is an extremely dangerous issue. There was another 335d in for service at the dealer also experiencing stalling issues!!!!!.
Tl- the contact owns a 2011 BMW 335d. The contact stated that while having the vehicle inspected that the vehicle failed inspection due to the catalytic converter. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter needed to be changed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 22,161. Wh.
The contact owns a 2008 BMW 335i. The contact stated that the vehicle was extremely slow to pick up speed. The contact applied force to the accelerator pedal to pick up speed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnosed that the fuel pump assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Excessive soot and carbon build up in the intake manifold and intake valves of the 335d which is a diesel car. This causes rough idling, misfires, and loss of engine power. While merging onto a highway, the engine malfunctioned due to this problem and immediately lost power almost causing a collision. The vehicle has had this problem for more than 20k miles and continous trips to the dealer to diagnose. Finally, the dealer agreed it was carbon build up but that it is not covered. The repairs for this should be covered by BMW as it is emissions related and can cause significant engine problems. This has not been an issue on other diesel cars by other manufacturers.

Driving on 4 lane road at 40mph when 2104 BMW 335i xdrive vehicle experienced total failure-starting with the navigation screen then the entire dashboard went black and engine shutdown (all in few seconds). There was no shoulder (concrete curb) so vehicle came to stop in the right lane. Headlights were "stuck" on but nothing else worked including the emergency flashers! contacted BMW assist but they were unable to help but sent out police and tow truck. Car would not shift into neutral and was dragged onto a flatbed damaging the vehicle. This was extremely frightening! we could have been injured or killed as cars were bearing down on us then swerving as we could not warn them without emergency flashers. Before someone is injured/killed, this issue needs to be addressed starting with why does this vehicle not "fail-safe"?--I. E. , where the emergency flashers work and transmission can be shifted into neutral? thank you!!.
Driving the vehicle on a highway with normal speed limit. Vehicle started to sputter and drivetrain malfunction warning light came on. Vehicle was losing power and speed decreasing quickly in the middle of the highway. I did have a chance to pull over safely on the shoulder. Wife and children was scared and so was I. Had the vehicle towed to the nearest BMW dealers/service station. Diagnostics so far was bad fuel. Online forum suggested otherwise. Any help is greatly appreciated.
"limp mode" is a very well known issue affecting 2012-2014 BMW 335i models with the m sport package. After accelerating from a stop to 60-65 mph, and merging into traffic, I experienced limp mode. The car would not accelerate, the rpms would not rise above 2500 or fall below 2000. The oil temperature was approximately 200 degrees. During the sudden loss of acceleration and power, no matter how hard or far I pushed the accelerator, the car would not accelerate- the car completely lost all power and the ability to accelerate. As I was coasting, I tried pumping the gas and shifting gears (shiftable automatic) to no avail. There were no warning lights on the dashboard or other warning messages displayed. While traffic zoomed past me, I coasted for a good 30-60 seconds gradually slowing to about 15 mph. After roughly 60 seconds, I pushed the accelerator down again and the car bucked, lurched and jumped and the rpms began to rise. I was able to accelerate normally again though the temperature did rise to roughly 240. I made an appointment immediately to have the car checked by my local BMW dealer. They replaced the aux cooling fan and applied a software update as is the case with "limp mode". This is the same "fix" applied to countless other 335i owners which simply doesn't work. My dealer opened a puma case with BMW to resolve the issue. Standard operating procedure is to replace the fan and apply a software update the first time, replace the fan relay the second time and apply a software update the third time. None of these work!! check f30 post, bimmer world and bimmer fest forums. Dealer was great, but I wanted them I will fight for a buyback if it happens again. Had this happened a few seconds later, while pulling out in front of cars traveling 65+ mph, I would not be here now. Recall this piece of crap!! when my lease is up or if I can get out of it, I will. Not safe.
Rattle noise coming from engine compartment or inside of dash upon acceleration (2000-2500rpm) on cold starts. Can change noise based upon acceleration. Goes away after motor warms up (usually 15 minutes) so getting diagnosed at the dealer is difficult. Repeatedly get "can't reproduce problem" back from the dealer. Widespread problem across multiple platforms (2012+ 3 series, 2014+ 4 series).
I am very happy to see your organization taking an interest in this issue. This is a dangerous problem with this vehicle that Bmwna is well aware of, but insists that it is "normal behavior" for my car/transmission. I brought the car into the dealer, and they were able to reproduce it, but they were told by BMW that this was "normal behavior. " the problem occurs when you slow down- like for a turn, but do not come to a complete stop. The dct transmission seems to have trouble figuring out what gear to select because when you step on the gas to accelerate, there is a very significant delay in the onset of power- up to 2-3 seconds. By this time, the driver is usually really digging into the throttle. The transmission finally picks a gear, which results in the car suddenly lurching forward, sometimes invoking the anti-skip control. The danger in this behavior occurs when making a turn into on-coming traffic after slowing down to around 10-15 mph. After the turn, the car is positioned in the traffic lane, but you have no power to accelerate into the flow of traffic. The oncoming cars are now closing in on your car at a fast rate, and you're basically stuck. This situation is most pronounced in the "auto" mode of the dct transmission, but also occurs to a lesser degree while in the manual mode when you select second gear in preparation for the turn. It is also very repeatable in both modes. These problems started occurring after a previous recall on this transmission where the engine would stall under hard braking or not shift under hard braking. The recall fixed that problem, but introduced this problem, which occurs almost every day whereas the previous problem only occurred during a specific situation. Thank you for looking into matter.

Manual transmission. 2nd gear synchronizer (synchro) failed @ 5000 miles. Unable to shift into 2nd gear safely. Problem/failure become more prominent @ 18,000 miles. BMW of san francisco voided warranty retroactively for using aftermarket parts @ 16k miles. Many individuals on complaining of same transmission issue. (1st to 2nd grind). Problem not resolved.
The contact owns a 2010 BMW 335i. The contact stated that the vehicle hesitated to accelerate from stops. The contact also stated that the vehicle experienced a failure in which power would not be transmitted to the rear wheels. The engine continued to run, but the rear wheels would not receive power from the transmission. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but received no assistance. The dealer did not believe that the contact had encountered the failures as described. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure and stated that it was impossible for their diagnostic system to not detect the failures. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The manufacturer also stated that they were closing their case and would no longer communicate with the contact about the situation. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 35,000.
