BMW 3 Series owners have reported 27 problems related to front air bag sensor control (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Hello, my 2009 BMW e92 328i is experiencing an issue where the front passenger seat sensor is not functioning properly, which will cause the airbag and seatbelt to not function as intended. There have been recalls on other models for the same issue, but with the same design and parts, I do not understand how my car is not covered. (https://brandilaw. Com/2013/12/26/BMW-recalls-76565-vehicles-due-to-a-front-passenger-seat-electronic-sensing-mat-failure/) this is a very dangerous problem. I have read on several online forums that it is a recurring problem in the cars after the effective recall date. I am trying my best to do due diligence and inform the ntsb to review this incident within other BMW models and to hopefully remedy any affected cars. The design of the sensor is very poorly constructed and very expensive to fix, leaving many owners to simply forego making the necessary fixes. In fact, several mechanics informed me that customers typically avoid making the fix due to how expensive it is, running the risk of their passenger not being protected in the event of a collision. I hope the ntsb can look into this problem. Please feel free to contact me at matthewburchill@aol. Com for any additional information. Thanks, matt.

The seat bag sensor is continuously on. There is no one in the seat. This started at about 65k, the car now has 106k. . . Is this dangerous to a passenger? of course, this seems to activate the seatbelt light also. . .

Front passenger occupancy seat sensor is defective because it disables passenger airbag creating a safety hazard rendering vehicle inoperable for passenger occupancy. This is a known defect experienced by previous models. Cost of repair is excessive. .
Takata recall- my airbag in the steering wheel has been replaced. The passenger seat mat sensor has had to be replaced 2x(1x under warranty) 1x I had to pay out of pocket and now a 3rd time (out of pocket) it has broken again. I believe this is a faulty part and should be covered under warranty. The vehicle was stationary each time this has broken.

Passenger seat mat sensor has gone bad. This is the same type of recall as the takata recall but BMW says that this car isn't covered for that recall. Recall cost over $1000. 00 to repair for a airbag safety issue. Seems to extremely common in BMW's. Took car to BMW dealership and they confirmed the issue with the car. Spoke to Bmwusa directly and they won't cover repair.
The car was stored outside in extreme heat during the month of April - 90+ degrees for over 3 weeks. (in florida) air bag sensor and seat belt sensor on passenger side, incorrectly alerting, when someone or no one was in the seat. Now the sensor is on all the time. Also the fan which cools the engine was extremely loud and on every morning when car was started.
Takata recall. The front passenger seat sensor in my 2006 BMW is defective making the passenger airbags turned off during the event of a crash when car is on or running airbag and seatbelt light turn on. Many other 2006 Bmws like mine are affected with this issue. A recall has been done for Bmws for models 2007 and newer but not for the 2006 model year. A recall needs to be done for this year make to insure the safety of people and passengers riding in this car. I use this car as a daily driver with my 5 year old daughter. Please update new info ASAP.
On the day of December 11, 2013 I began to encounter my passenger airbag sensor go off and on intermittently. As I write this today the sensor is always on. I now drive with questionable passenger safety on the daily.
I received a recall notice from BMW in January 2014 (recall campaign number 13v-564: front passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor mat). The recall notice states that in the current condition, the vehicle is unsafe to drive with a passenger in the front passenger seat. The recall notice states that the parts needed to perform the repair are scheduled to be available in March 2014. It is now may 6, 2014 and BMW customer relations has indicated that the parts are still not available and they are unable to provide an estimate on when they will be. It has now been nearly 5 months since receiving the original recall notice. During this time I essentially have a vehicle that is unsafe to drive with a passenger in the front passenger seat. BMW does not appear to be taking this issue seriously and providing a prompt resolution to this problem. I have placed repeated calls into BMW customer relations and continue to be informed that nothing can be done until the required parts are made available. Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Have had issue with my one of my 2 --- 2007 330i's dashboard light came on with a message "pass restraint system malfunction". A detailed message says "fault in passenger-restraint system affecting airbag, belt tensioner or belt-force limiter took it to the dealer and they said I need a new passenger seat air bag sensor with a replacement cost of over $1000,00. I recently learned BMW has had a problem with this part and has recalled 2006-2007 cars but any vehicle made after September 2006 is not on the recall list. Mine were manufactured Jan 2007. I've been informed that my vehicle has the same part as the recalled ones and believe that BMW should recall all their vehicles with this same passenger seat sensor problem.
The front passenger airbag warning showed up. Took to the shop they charged me $1200 to replace the front passenger seat sensor mat. I see that there is a recall issued by BMW to fix this in 2006 3 Series. I want to get my refund for the repairs which I have already got done.
I got in my car after driving it to the park & got a fault that said restraint system malfunction. Fault in passenger restraint system affecting airbag, belt tensioner or belt- force limiter. I researched this & found that it is a problem with the sensor in the passenger seat mat. I found that this is a recall on my car & year, but when I call, they say it doesn't apply to my VIN. This has been a huge problem with a ton of owners. I've also read that most of the people call & complain & they'll end up fixing it under the recall. But, I'm having no luck. I'd understand if it was just me, but they've recalled it on the sane exact car & year as mine & I don't understand why mine wouldn't fall under this recall!.
Faulty seat mat sensor in passenger seat for the 2nd time.
Front seat passenger seat occupancy sensor failed. Most 2006 BMW 3 Series were recalled for this issue. Our car was not included in the recall but had the identical problem. I believe my car should have been included in the recall.
My 2006 BMW 325i front passenger sport seat was diagnosed by dealer to have a cracked front seat sensor mat of the air bag protection system. This defect causes the front passenger air bags to be deactivated & the air bag warning lamp to illuminate. This situation could cause the front passenger air bag to be deactivated & not deploy in an emergency. Therefore not protecting the passenger. This defect is a known defect & is covered by the nhtsha campaign #: 08v384000. BMW stated that my VIN # [xxx] was not part of the 200,000+ vehicles recalled. Certified mechanics verified the details of the recall & the faults shown on the diagnostic check of the air bag protection system to be the same. I am asking that NHTSA issue a letter directing that my vehicle VIN be included in the recall so that the system can be restored & the warranty be extended as directed in the BMW recall of 2006 3 Series sport seats. Thank you for your consideration in this matter. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2006 BMW 3 Series. The contact stated that both of the air bag on-off lamps illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they diagnosed a faulty front passenger seat sensor mat. The contact stated that he was made aware that there was a recall for this specific failure by the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and they explained that his vehicle was not included in recall: NHTSA campaign id number - 08v384 (air bags: frontal), therefore they would not pay for the labor but would pay for the parts. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage were 49,800.
Srs airbag sensor for 2006 BMW 3 Series VIN [xxx] needed replacement. Thought it would be repaired for free under recall 08v384000 but dealer said vehicle is not covered under recall and made owner responsible for repair costs. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2006 BMW 330i. The contact stated that the restraint system malfunction light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the dealer informed the contact that the mat sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The dealer also stated that the vehicle was not included in recall 08v384000 (air bags: frontal). The contact called the manufacturer who verified that the vehicle was not included. The current mileage was 73,620. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Failure of front passenger airbag on 2006 BMW 330i. Small cracks have developed in the sensor mat within the front passenger seat. The cracks have deactivated the airbag, which affect the safety of passengers in the event of a severe accident. No undue external force has been applied to the seat. There have been no collisions, etc. The failure occurred after 4 years, approximately 40,000 miles. A previous recall has been issued for the same year, make, and model (08v384000); however it does not apply to my VIN number. BMW is unwilling to replace and repair parts due to defects in parts and craftsmanship.
I have a 2006 325i and my airbag sensor light warning lit up - I took it to the dealer and they ran a diagnostic test it was the airbag sensor that needed to be replaced - over $1000. There is a recall listed for my year and model but my VIN is not included in the recall. I called BMW USA and the NHTSA - they say there is nothing I can do. I do not understand why my VIN is not included when I have the model and year listed in the recall.
Regardless the recall rconl-08v384-6332 on 2006 BMW 330xi, front passenger seat occupant detection sensor, BMW denied to replace failed sensor.
The contact owns a 2006 BMW 330i. The contact stated that the front passenger mat sensor light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. Both the dealer and the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in recall 08v384000 (air bags: frontal) and the contact would be responsible for repair costs. The VIN was unavailable. The current mileage was approximately 63,000. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.
Passenger occupancy sensor malfunction that disables the airbags in 2006 e90 BMW 3 Series sedan. This malfunctioning sensor could cause grave bodily injury or death. BMW recalled previous years sensors but has not fixed the issue in later models. Some people are bypassing the sensor in there vehicles and are placing unknowing subsequent owners children at risk of airbag injury. BMW forums all have multiple complaints about the safety concerns NHTSA should investigate and force a recall of the passenger occupancy sensor as it did in some earlier 2006 Bmws with the same issue.
This complaint is in regards to NHTSA id #08v384000. The air bag warning lamp, seat belt lamp and the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp will not turn off . I contacted BMW via the phone number provided by your department and also visited my local BMW dealer and they both say that my car doesn't fall under said recall. My car is a BMW 2006 330i with sports seats, which is one of the cars listed as being defective by your department. However, BMW stated that the recall is for a specific number of airbag sensor matts that were damaged during shipping and that my car's matt was not part of this batch. Since my car is experiencing the same symptoms as those under the recall, and is actually one of the cars listed in your report, it's safe to say that the faulty airbag sensor issue goes beyond just the batch BMW is claiming were damaged. Even if this is true, and that specific batch of air bag sensors were damaged during shipping, then what's to say that my air bag sensor wasn't also damaged during shipping even if it was part of another batch. The logical conclusion, however, would indicate that the sensors being damaged during shipping is false and that there is in fact a flaw with the sensor itself. This is evident in the fact that BMW produced an updated version of the sensor and that my sensor though not part of the so called damaged batch is also experiencing the same exact symptoms. If the cause of the faulty sensors were due to being damaged during shipping then why need to create an updated version. The logical thing to do would be to ensure the safe delivery of the sensors, not create a new version. I've owned many vehicles with this same feature and have never had any problems. BMW claiming that the symptoms of my sensor having the same symptoms as the damaged batch is just a coincidence is a far cry. At the very least a new investigation should be done. Thank you.
The oc3 mat (passenger occupancy sensor mat) has failed. This issue, as described in more detail below (4. ), involves the front passenger seat occupant detection mat of certain BMW vehicles, and has been the subject of NHTSA pe07-045 and ea08-001. In short, a fatigue failure of the mat can occur and would consequently lead to the deactivation of the front passenger air bags with exception of the head protection system. The air bag warning lamp as well as the passenger air bag "on-off" lamp would illuminate in such case. BMW states that my vehicle does not fall under this recall since it was produced after 11/2005. Yet, the prognosis of the failure is exactly the same as of the recall.
Faulty front passenger seat sensor mat always breaks.
I brought the vehicle into brecht dealership in escondido to address seatbelt safety/airbag sensor light warning. The vehcile ahs been in for repair a total of eight (8) times for the same issue. Today the seatbelt airbag warinig devise came on with the loaner provided bydealer with a screen statement: warning danger keep your seatbelt on and return to shop for repair. This is a 20014 vehicle. I believe this entire issue of seatbelt airbag safety is a manufacuturer defect and warrants full investigation before a grandchild seated in the passenger seat is killed from an airpabg improperly ejecting or even worse nothing no airbag or seat belt protection in an accident.
