I own a 2008 335i twin turbo BMW 3 Series, while driving I started smelling a fresh gas smell in the back of my car inside and outside, really strong smell so much I have to keep my windows down and it gives me a headache and I feel like my car is going to catch on fire with any given spark and it could, the certified mechanic said my fuel pump assembly is faulty so I went online and there is a recall on the 2008 335i twin turbo but for some reason when I called BMW they said my car is not on the recall list so they wont fix it! my car has the problem, my car has apx 80,000 , eighty thousand miles oni it. Why is my car not covered when it has the problem of all the other cars? this is a very dangerous situation I have. Please help. Thank you for your time.

March 28, 2018 - driving on the freeway, car suddenly comes to a stop and shows message fuel pump with car on rock icon. Car gets towed. Next day mechanic says it ran out of gas, added gas started the car. March 29, 2018 car stalls after 5 miles near the ramp of exit. Get the car towed to another mechanic. Mechanic does not find any problems. April 14th, 2018 - car stops on the freeway. Tow it to mechanic mechanic says that its related to fuel tank sensor. This causes a wrong reading of level of gas in the car. Mechanic changes it and car runs ok for 2 months. June 21, 2018 - car stops on the freeway with the same message "service engine soon" with the car on rock icon. I get towing service to add gas and wait for an hour. Restart the car and it works. The message is gone, the icon is gone. This is the fourth time I was stranded on the freeway.
I was driving on a very busy road in downtown chicago in heavy traffic and the car just suddenly stalled without any warning middle of the road and won't move. Of course came close to being crashed from behind. I am grateful and lucky that the cars behind were able to stop in time and maneuver around me to avoid collision. The BMW dealer inspected the car and told me that the fuel pump and its control unit is faulty. I have attached their diagnosis as well. I find it hard to believe that a less than 4 year old car with under 25k miles on it has a fuel pump failure, unless it was faulty to begin with. I checked into the recalls for BMW 328i models for faulty fuel pumps and it seems BMW recalled models from 2014, but it seems the 2012 BMW has this issue as well. I was saved but I want to make sure no one else is hurt because of faulty parts that car manufacturers fail to check before selling it to unsuspecting consumers, who think they are safe when driving these expensive cars with their families and precious ones in it. I shudder to think what could have happened and I consider myself lucky to be still alive, safe and ok to write this message.

Currently I have the high pressure fuel pump in my 335i (2008). I have my "service engine soon engine malfunction. Reduced power" light on - it just came on yesterday. Original warranty was 4 years 40,000 miles. Which according to BMW was extended 10 years 120,000. So I am out of warranty because I already have 130k, my car was brought to BMW several occasion, it was never brought to my attention that there may a potential problems with the high pressure fuel pump.
When crossing an intersection engine lost power and power steering went out. Took car to BMW dealership and they said the fuel pump went out and the pump and tank have to be replaced.
I was driving on a highway around 60 mph speed and suddenly my car couldn't speed any further and lucky for me I was driving next to center divide and could pull it, I was able to avoid any accident. It was peak traffic time ( early morning commute ). So I believe this needs to looked into that if there was a recall which was not applied to all the make, models. After diagnosis it was found the issue was with fuel pump on which there are certain recalls on the newer models but for 2008 model they was none I confirmed with the customer service.
1) car would not start, fuse blown on fuel pump. (no. 1 original) towed to mechanic. 2) mechanic replaces fuel pump. (no. 2) 3) return car to driveway where it sits over night. Car won't start. Towed it to mechanic. Replaced fuel pump, and he allows it to sit in his garage over night. (no. 3) 4) car won't start. He thoroughly checks the car for problems, replaces the fuel pump, emptying fuel tank, replacing with new gasoline. (no. 4) mechanic cut opened the original fuel pump and found that the impeller had swollen. This suggested to him that the high ethanol content fuel was swelling the impeller. He tried using both BMW parts and after market parts. This isn't not an issue with the age of the car. He saved the fuel pump and a gasoline sample.

I was driving on local. All of sudden, there was no response when stepping on the gas. I had to pull over the shoulder and stop the vehicle. I tried to restart the car. It didn't succeed. I had to ask for towing to the mechanic. And it turned out to be a fuel pump fuse problem. My car was just out of warranty since I bought it in Dec 2006. So I had to pay it myself for the repair ($600).
