The drivetrain disintegrated. Car started running really rough, and then just stopped completely. Would crank but would not move. Yes, it is available. Car would barely go, and then just stopped in the road. I had to have it towed to a mechanic. No, I had not received a warning of this possible hazard. No, it was not inspected by any of the above, but was inspected by numerous mechanics. Yes, drivetrain light/warning came on, as well as, drive at a slower rate when the car started to drive roughly. The turbo also went out on the car. May 28, 2024.

Car gave a drivetrain malfunction error and I was able to get the car to the mechanic I've used on the car since it was purchased. I was informed this week that there is now debris in the oil from the timing chain.
The engine seized after paying it off I was told the timing chain jumped and hit a valve.

With no prior warning or issues my car displayed a drive train error followed by a low pressure error and immediately lost power. The timing chain blew and destroyed the engine.
Car engine caught on fire while driving today and stopped. No smoke or other issues prior. Worried this is related to the recall issued by BMW recently, however my car is not covered under the recall yet. The car is currently located in vancouver canada. It was purchased in tulsa, ok.
While driving on the grand central plwy, queens, NY, a drive train motification came on and stated to drive moderately, right after the oil light came on. We were near a gas station, and added a quart of oil. The oil light went out, the car started without hesitation. We decided to go home, we got off the highway about a mile out, the car just stopped went into park and could not start again. It would crank over, but not connect. We were on a four lane road, luckily there was no one behind us, it could have been a terrible incident. The car was towed to a BMW dealership in great neck, NY and we were told it was either the engine or the timing chain and it was not worth fixing. The car was then towed to my mechanic, who stated there was a technical warning #n20 & n26 regarding the timing issue. Hoping something can be done.
The contact owns a 2012 BMW 528i. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, there was an abnormal sound coming from the vehicle. The drivetrain malfunction warning light illuminated. Car just wouldn't start one day. Drivetrain malfunction warning indicating timing chain replacement. Car just sits in my driveway. Will cost 6 grand to fix. Timing chain failure probably effected my engine.
I own BMW 528i 2012. These engines are straight up bad. Timing chain failed at 149k miles with no signs of failure. Just driving down the road when suddenly the car just turns off and goes into neutral on its own. I simply pulled over restarted the car to cylinder misfires, car struggling to accelerate, smoke out the exhaust, and a loud rattling sound. I pulled over had the car towed. I had my car taken to a independent shop for repairs and diagnostics and what I got told was absolutley crazy. The timing chain guides broke off the timing chain, went down into the oil pump and those pieces settled into the pump restricting oil from going to the top of the motor causing the timing chain to start slacking and breaking from the top. He also said one of the camshaft caps also has a crack in it. The car has been parked in my driveway for 6 months because repairing the motor would cost a ton, and putting in a remanafactured motor with labor cost would cost just as much as buying the same car again. BMW had a lawsuit about the n20/n26 but thats only covered upto 100k miles. Considering my car was running good I had no reason too change anything on this car. Oil changes were done almost every 3-5k miles and the car had no sounds no lights on the dash. I tried to claim the sulev/pzev warranty which is covered upto 150k miles and the dealerships either never contacted me back or they just said no. I even contacted the hq of BMW and they also refused any repair even with sulev warranty. BMW knows 100% these motors have a bad timing chain issue and that these timing chains can fail at any moment. What type of motor fails at 150k miles. Im a college student, my dad gave me this car for graduating high school. I maintained my car so much just for it to fail out of no where and the way it failed could have caused someone to crash into me. Im really upset that BMW isnt taking responsibility for whats wrong and wont recall these timing chains or motor no matter the mileage on the car.
Casually picking up from a stop light when my car just randomly decided to turn off on the middle of the road and go into neutral. I lost power steering and brakes. I was able to manage to pull over and restart the car and I was welcomed with a bunch of check engine lights and many other malfunctions. Got the car towed and comes out that the timing chain has failed as well as the oil pump and resulted in damage to the camshaft and cylinder head of the motor. This is just insane how all of this happened in just a few seconds. I took care of my car did oil changes on time, coolant, brakes, transmission fluid. I took care of my car. BMW put me in a very unsafe condition that day and I’m very upset because that could have ended very bad for me. The n20 motor has been very well known to fail at any time without any warning and BMW has yet to recall this motor. It became very bad to the point to where they even got sued but only limited the warranty up to 100k miles. Many people experienced this problem before 100k and some experienced it earlier. Their is no given time when this timing chain can fail on you. In my case so many things were damaged in the engine and I even contacted BMW na and they didn’t even care to help. BMW put me in a very bad spot and they want me to replace the engine and pay labor and pay more than what the cars worth! BMW is crazy for this and I hope all of these engines get recalled and get replaced free of charge without worrying about how many miles you got on the car.
Picked up from a stop light no aggressive but normally and a few seconds after going around 20-30ish mph the car stalls and goes into neutral. I was really confused and panicking of what happened, the cars behind me almost crashed into me and I was trying to manage to pull the car over to the side of road and thankfully I did. This could have caused a serious injury to me and others. As I was able to pull off to the side of the road I try to start my car back up and it cranks and cranks for a few seconds which it normally never does and finally when it starts back up the car just starts miss firing like crazy and the check engine light comes on and the car is throwing codes all over the place like drive train malfunction, engine malfunction, low oil pressure, check engine oil, auto stop start malfunction. I was super confused so I shut it off and tried to start it again but it didn’t help at all. I drove slowly into a parking lot and got it towed to a independent repair shop to which they diagnosed the timing chain guides breaking and falling into the oil pump, clogging the oil pump then causing further damage due to no oil going to the top of the motor. I was very confused how all of this could have happened since I took care of my car . If the car had given me a service warning light I would have went and got my engine serviced for this job. Now the thing is these timing chain jobs aren’t cheap and replacing the oil pump chain is even more expensive since it requires lowering the sub frame. Now in my case the timing was so bad to where the engine did something to the cylinders as of what my mechanic said. So my engine is toast and I need a new engine. Car has a hunk of metal parked in my driveway now that I’m still paying off. Good job BMW. I really want to sue BMW for this bs. The car is poorly designed and I’m super thankful this issue did not occur on the freeway because I could have died. I looked into the BMW warranty and it’s only covering up to 100k.
In 2020 the engine started malfunctioning at 76,000 miles. I took it into the BMW dealership to get it inspected and they stated that it was a valve issue and charged replacement. After replacement, the engine lit would come on and I called the representative. He stated that it would need time to reset so I continued driving it. Eventually the light did not come on for some time. A year later in 2021 after driving to work the engine started to stall on my way to work on the highway. I since taken it back to BMW stating that it was less than 10,000 miles since the repair and I'm having engine troubles again. After talking to the BMW service representative, they stated that I will need a new engine because it is now blown. The engine only has 84,000 miles on it and I requested root cause analysis on the engine. After reviewing online, I discovered that this engine is mounted on multiple platforms BMW sold and is known to have issues since 2017 and a lawsuit in 2020, the same year I took my car to the BMW dealership for repairs. They neglected to inform me of the issue with the engine when I first took the car in and put my car back on the road with a faulty engine. Gross negligence by BMW.
The vehicle lost power, while in motion, in the middle of the road after accelerating. The car gave an error code of drivetrain malfunction. My car lost power in the middle of a busy city street, and it could have easily led to a terrible accident. Possibly related to NHTSA campaign number: 16v746000 but my car was not included in the recall.
I bought a certified BMW and had continuous issues with my engine, constantly refilling the oil, even after service. After taking this to the dealer, I was told that everything was fine and there weren't any issues. All of this finally came to a head-on Sunday, 6/21/2020 when my car finally came to an abrupt stop. After towing, I was told that this is a timing chain issue and would cost me $7,400 which wouldn't necessarily remedy the issue, I heard this could reach towards 15-20k. I find this hard to believe after having only driven this car on avg 8k/year and having roughly 84k miles in total. My experience with BMW has since been painful to say the least since. I've had this towed twice in 2 days, been given an ultimatum on either fixing the vehicle or buying a new one - when asking for a loaner, I was told that I needed contact enterprise and reserve one on my own. I've owned multiple german cars and never had to deal with this level of unprofessionalism.
I was driving on the freeway and my car suddenly stopped running and shut down on me mid freeway! I stepped on gas pedal and nothing! it turned off on me and wouldn't turn on! now it turns but gas won't work! I believe there is a problem with the gas pump of something regarding gas fuel! I had to call my car insurance to tow my car when I became stranded on the freeway.
My 2012 BMW 528 xi engine n20 just grenaded itself due to the issue in this link below and noticed you had a class action suit that let BMW cover customers upto 7yr/70k miles. I had to shell out 7000 for replacement engine. Mine failed just over 70k miles and there are numerous other customers in the same boat based on what I am reading in the forums. Is there another class action lawsuit that could be filed to cover these customers so that BMW extends warranty to 10yr /120k for these faulty engines. BMW engine chain defects class action lawsuit is williams, et al. V. BMW of north America llc, et al. , case no. 2:17-cv-11567, in the u. S. District court for the district of new jersey. . Tl the contact owns a 2012 BMW 528xi. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the drive train malfunction warning light illuminated. The vehicle coasted to the side of the roadway and loss motive power. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact called the global imports BMW located at 500 interstate n pkwy, atlanta, GA 30339, (800) 294-1853, and was told that the timing chain failure caused the engine to fail. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the service director of the same dealer. The contact was informed that the vehicle was out of warranty. No further assistance was provided. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 155,000.
My 2012 BMW 528 xdrive suddenly got a warning low oil pressure follows by drive train malfunction, and slows down-went on neutral and stop in the middle of the road. All that happened within less than a minute. I got it towed to the BMW dealership for a diagnostic and they told me that the timing chain guide has broken apart, timing chain came off, jumped time, starved engine for oil & contaminated engine and will require a whole new engine replace which will cost around $13756. 56 +labor+tax my total was $ 16456. I found out I am not alone and this is a known problem with BMW of this make and model. I also called the BMW north America they told me that the extended warranty was only up to 70,000 miles and they can not do anything about it, my car fails at 105k miles. I think BMW must stand behind there product. We can not buy an expensive car like BMW with an engine life is less than 8yrs.
My 528xi was being driven at high speed when engine bucked and seized. Managed while this was happening to get to emergency area. Car died, no neutral/ towed to dealer 12/31/18. Computer showed with no warning low oil pressure followed immediately by drive chain failure. Had to fight to get engine replaced with remanufactured engine and ask for turbo to be replaced. 6/22/19 cr died again would not start, jumped started drove to dealer and dies again. Told need d new battery. 6/30/19 car once again stopped dead on major road, no warning. Now they say I need a new fuel pump.
When driving the car on the highway, a drive train malfunction warning would appear frequently on the display panel. I took the car to valley BMW in modesto, CA, on November 2018. After on extensive diagnostic evaluation, they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. The only suggestion was to replace the car's battery. I took the car to batteries plus bulbs for a second opinion. They determined that the battery was still in good condition and did not need to be replaced. The drive train malfunction continued to appear when driving on highway. In a subsequent visit to the dealer, I again mentioned the issue with the drivetrain malfunction warning still apearing on the display panel. Our customer service agents, said they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, therefor, there was nothing they could do. On a trip to san francisco, we experienced a major engine break down. The car had completely shut down. Fortunatly,we had just exited the highway. We then had the car towed to petter pan BMW dealership and they concluded that indeed the engine had experienced a major breakdown, in their evaluation, they also noted the battery was in good condition. This completely contradicts the claim by valley BMW that the battery was the issue. Since then, I have found out that there is a class action lawsuit against BMW for a defective n20 engine which is the engine in my car. I also went as far as contacting the ceo of BMW northamerica reganding this deffective motor. As expect BMW refused to accept any responsability for the deffective engine. Once I brought up the class action lawsuit, BMW cut off all communications with me. My family and I are asking for your support in investigating BMW on this deffective motor and holding then accountable for such poor and negligent behavior, please help all affected customers with this terrible and devestating situation.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 BMW 528i. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off and "drive train malfunction" displayed on the instrument panel. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer (BMW of dallas, 6200 lemmon Ave, dallas, TX) where it was diagnosed that the engine was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000. The VIN was unknown.
I purchased my BMW 528 xi drive cpo in January 2015. In August 2018 my engine oil pressure light came on in the car and then the drive train malfunction light. I tried to run a self diagnostic on the car as this is a feature built in and the engine oil check would only go up to 15% and cut off. I took it into BMW of bloomfield for service mentioning this to them. They changed the oil and cleared the codes got the car back. Fast forward to just a few weeks ago, I am driving on the highway and the engine oil pressure and drive train malfunction light come on and the car stops on me. I could have gotten killed. I had it towed to BMW and they check it and say that the engine is gone due to low pressure and repairs are 20,000 plus. Remind you I barely drive the car as I work in NY and take the bus . I only drive the car on evenings and weekends. I contacted the corporate BMW of na offfice and they act like they don't care. Advised me to talk to the service manager to see what could be done. Based om what I have researched this seems to be a common issue with these types of cars as it is a defect in the engine. Now I am not sure what to do but will be consulting an attorney.
With only 76k miles while driving on highway with no warning drivetrain malfunction comes on car stops. Brought to BMW and was told oil was dark with pieces of shred metal and engine needs to be replace for over $10,000. Was so confused due to having a oil change less then 1 month ago. Now call is sitting because I can't afford to replace engine and still owe money on car which no one will take due to it not driving.
At 96,000 miles and 6. 5 years my car with no warning, the low oil pressure light came on and the car immediately shut down. Luckily for me, I was traveling on a road with little traffic which was fortunate as I usually travel on i95. I took it to the BMW dealer and he stated I needed a new engine as the timing chain broke and left shards of metal in the engine. . BMW has proof that the maintenance was completed timely on the car. The cost is $11,250 to replace the engine and the dealer and BMW will only decrease to $8,000. The automotive repair facility stated that they see at least one of these per week. This was a new engine that BMW came out with in 2011. They increased the warranty to 7 years 70k miles due to issues but I'm over on miles. This is a huge safety issue and should result in a recall. Issues are abound on-line and BMW will not take responsibility. This issue has had to result in deaths and injuries. BMW should be held accountable and be required to fix these issues. This is not an anomaly.
My car has always been serviced they BMW service department. There is a running log. Car was last serviced back in oct. My car had been there 2 times previously. Not sure how metal shaving would end up in my engine. My vehicle is out of warranty. 109,000 miles. I have the same driving patterns. Warning issued while driving engine oil pressure. Pulled over , car turned completely off. You could here the car trying to restart. Car was towed to the BMW service department. I was told a needed to replace the engine. Not sure how or why I never received any indication of engine falliure. I'm the second owner of this car. My service records prove I have faith fully bought my car in for service whenever needed or any issue would arise. Not I'm told I'm responsible for paying the repairs. BMW has issued several recalls. This is clearly another issue that should be investigated and BMW should assume responsibility.
I found the noise from the engine and took into the dealer(patrick BMW) with towing. They found out that the timing chain and guide were broken inside the engine. I need to replace the engine. BMW has extended a warranty to 70k miles regarding this problems. My mileage is 89k. There are many 5 series BMW has these problems when they reached between 90k and 100k. BMW already knew about this problems and have extended to 70k miles. They are trying to giving the gesture to the consumer but it does not resolve any problems at all if it does cover by 70k miles. Again these problems usually the occurs between 90k and 100k miles. BMW has realized this but did not fix the problems. I am paying more money to a luxury car but they are not qualified.
