3 Car Stall problem of the 2012 BMW 528

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

My 2012 BMW 528i stalled twice 2 wks ago when I was slowing down at a traffic signal. The display showed either "drivetrain malfunction" or "transmission malfunction". Immediately I turned on the hazard lights, slowly changed lanes slowly and come to a halt, by which the warning was gone and I drove home at less than 15 mph. The next morning the car seemed fine and I was able to drive it to a local mechanic, who advised a BMW service. I took the car to an authorized service center (asc) for verification and was directed to come back in few days; within that week it happened again. I went to another asc to have it fully diagnosed. It was determined that faulty guides in the timing-chain caused it. I had no idea it was design flaw until I read about it in online. The service manager also said they have seen it happen in many cars and sometimes under 30k miles and in few instances needing entire engine replacement for $15000. I see several customers with n20 and n26 engines having this issue same as with n63 engines. I contacted Bmwusa and lodged a complaint about this for reimbursement referring to NHTSA TSB 110614, but was denied. I was told BMW knew of this issue and extended the warranty to 7y/70k. I was not aware of this and mygarage on Bmwusa is not showing it. I have received several marketing info on new BMW and leases instead. Class action lawsuits have been lodged in north America and deaths in ireland requiring a court order for mandatory recall. 1) williams, et al. V. BMW of north America llc, et al. , case no. 2:17-cv-1156. 2) gelis, et al. V. Bayerische motoren werke aktiengesellschaft, et al. , case no. . Read more...

4 Car Stall problem of the 2012 BMW 528

Failure Date: 12/29/2019

While driving down the 95 highway my car showed a fuel supply error then powered down and stoped and wouldn't restart. I had it towed to a hotel and the following morning it started while the tow truck loaded it to take to the dealer. I had a full tank of gas at the time. I could have been killed with my kids. Towed it to BMW and all they told me was to replace my battery even though I had a perfectly good battery and the and everything requiring a battery worked like radio, lights etc. I bought a new battery from them and the tech drove the car for 30 miles. Within 2 hours after leaving the dealership my car did the same thing while exiting the highway and slowing down at a stop light. A diagram flashes on the console and then a message about the fuel supply. I was assisted by calling 911 to get my kids and I to safety and my car out the way. There is a recall on the fuel module or pump for my year and make but BMW claims my VIN is not included. This is dangerous, people can get killed if the cars are stalling while in motion.

5 Car Stall problem of the 2013 BMW 528

Failure Date: 08/07/2019

While driving on the interstate at 70 mph, the car, without warning, gave an error message that the oil pressure was low and then another message that said drivetrain malfunction. The car went into neutral on its own and wouldn't go back into drive. In traffic on a 4 lane highway, I had to immediately pull over (dangerous), and get the car towed. The belly pan had to be removed in order to manually engage the car in neutral so the car could be towed(dangerous to do on a busy highway). After the car was taken to a BMW dealership, I was told the engine was locked and the replacement was $18,000! this car has been serviced and was full of oil, so the dealer could not tell me what the issue was unless they tore it down. I complained to BMW north America (corporate) that there was obvious an issue with this vehicle, and they only came back with giving me the warranty rate of $12,000 and they would pick up 15% of the cost. This is not good enough on a vehicle that cost $$60,000 and does not hold its value. After further research, I found out that total story about these cars. BMW's who have the n 20 or n26 engines have a timing chain that have a systematic defect. My vehicle has a n 20 engine. Once these vehicles approach 70,000 - 100,000 miles, the timing chain will break which will cause extensive damage to the engine. BMW is aware of this issue, but have refused to do a recall to install the repair kit. This is most likely due to the cost of the replacement kit, but BMW would rather compromise one's safety and for over priced repairs. Instead, BMW issued an extended warranty on the drivetrain unit up to 70,000 miles. However, BMW is aware that the timing chain will break after 70,000 miles. In the vehicles with these engines, it is not a matter of if the chain will break, it is a matter of when it will break. I will never purchase another BMW product.

6 Car Stall problem of the 2012 BMW 528

Failure Date: 02/26/2019

Last week I was on the NJ turnpike when all of a sudden my car stall and lost power, I barley got off the turnpike when the car came to a completely stop. No warning messages or noises just stopped. Fortunately no accident occurred due to this but could have been an ugly one. The car would not start and was towed to the BMW dealer. The car was inspected, oil was clean, no water damage, however they tell me I need a new engine (13k) has the engine seized without telling me what caused it. The car has 83k miles. I've been a BMW owner for 19 years. I now have mixed feelings about BMW and the way I feel now I will nevery buy another BMW as I'm not getting the attention I thin I deserve. 8 Car Stall problem of the 2012 BMW 528

Failure Date: 11/19/2018

Last week my wife was on the freeway when all of a sudden the car stall and lost power, my wife was able to barley pull to the side of the fwy when the car completely stopped. No warning messages or noises just stopped. Fortunately no accident occurred due to this but could have been an ugly one. The car wold not start and was towed to my house and was inspected by my mechanic. He found broken pieces of the timing guide and metal shavings inside the engine. I see that there was an extended warranty for this issue but it was only extended to 70k miles. I was not aware of this issues and specially not this big where I would endanger my family when the car would die while driving. I now have mixed feelings about BMW. I have a payment on a car that is well known and luxury all around that failed due to poor quality parts on the most important part of a car the engine. Please let me know my options and hopefully I don't get discouraged to ever buy another BMW.

This was the 1st out of 3 times my vehicle stalled while driving. I was very nervous, scared and upset being that I had told BMW that the coolant was constantly showing me low coolent light along with possible engine damage. But they would always try to erasure me the problem was fixed. I felt that all the gentleman at carmax chuckled quietly to themselves as I stood before them tirelessly requesting that the service manager look at the car to prove that I'm not a joke and just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I don't know how cars work.

15 Car Stall problem of the 2012 BMW 528

Failure Date: 01/12/2014

While driving in metro detroit last night my 2012 BMW 528i xdrive suddenly flashed a "fuel system malfunction" message, lurched and came to a dead stop just past the intersection of novi road and 10 mile. I was two miles from the expressway and my wife and children were with me in the car. Had I made it to I-96 - just two miles up the road - and this happened, we very likely would have been involved in a major accident. Police were called because I was in the middle of the street. The car was electronically locked. I could not put the car in neutral to move it out of the roadway. BMW service finally managed to get the car towed 8 hours later because few tow trucks lacked the equipment needed to move the car without damage. There is no manual override to allow you to put the car in neutral, it can only be accessed by a service tech underneath the car. My service advisor was well aware of the problem. This is a major hazard and huge design flaw. There is no mechanical linkage to either the start/stop button or the shifter. It's all electronically controlled. I shudder to think what would have happened had the car stalled on the interstate. Now I'm stuck with a car I don't feel safe driving.
