2 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 07/07/2016

The vehicle is made with inferior wire coating that can and I'm sure has resulted in fires. Not to mention the features of the lights can and will stop working unexpectedly. This also causes shorts in the wiring of the switch in the dash I believe and possible battery drain leaving people stranded or even having car die while in motion. BMW had my car for 3 weeks trying to figure out all their other faulty issues - they finally had their head foreman take the car home with him and go over it with a fine tooth comb. He fixed most of the issues. They had sent me home with my car 3 or 4 times telling me my issues were resolved only for the car to stall, smell like burning rubber or just not start. They were also aware of the faulty wiring but did not list it as an item of eminent concern - however after taking car to another mechanic for a blown bulb a month later they expressed to me the extreme fire hazard the vehicle wiring posed and that because of the nature (or problematic design rather) of BMW they were not at liberty to delve into such matters. BMW is the utmost morally reprehensible auto maker I have ever encountered from start to finish. My lights went out while driving and I was almost hit by a driver in a large escalade around dusk a week ago. What's worse is when I took vehicle to BMW I was also having them fix the tail light recall that is prone to cause fires. I have never met more incompetent people. You do not get what you pay for.

3 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 09/17/2014

Suddenly right sided headlight went out, I opened the headlight cover to change the bulb . Found all the wiring was crumbled and the coating was melted. Headlight came back on. Since then it happens a lot. I called Bmwna to complaint about it and they said I have to open complaint with NHTSA. This has been reported by other BMW 528i 2008 owners. This is hazardous issue as open wires can potentially catch fire in headlight. Same problem in tail light initiated recall last year.

4 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

Passenger side rear tail light (back up and turn signal) wire harness connector melted. Per ntbsb and web search, numerous people have had exact same problem. Dash indicated that first tail light failed, then back up light failed. Inspection showed melted wire connector. This is a manufacturing defect and safety issue that needs to be addressed. Was nearly collided when making a right turn.

5 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 BMW 528

Failure Date: 08/28/2013

I received a displayed message there was a malfunction with the rear lamp. When checking the tail light assembly and wiring, I noticed the connector on the tail lamp assembly was melted (plastic) where the brown ground wire connected. The male/female connector parts got so hot that the plastic connector was melted where the ground wire connects. This was on the drivers side, but it is likely the passenger side would have the same problem. The heat generated to melt the plastic connector could cause the ground wire to burn and the brake/rear lights to fail. With a failure of the rear lights, an accident could happen.

6 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 07/31/2013

Rear exterior lights(brake, tail, & turn signal) - melted wire assembly is causing malfunction. While driving I noticed a "burning" smell. Shortly thereafter, all at once my dash indicated that my passenger side tail light, brake light, and turn signal had simultaneously malfunctioned. The wiring harness that attaches to the light assembly is melted. BMW did a recall of over 2,500 3-series vehicles for the exact same issue but has not recalled the 5-series (????) this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

7 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Warning came on that the right rear tail light malfunctioned. Within the next few days the warning went away but then came back intermittently and also stated that the right rear brake light and turn signal had malfunctioned. These warnings were intermittent. About a week later the signals came on every time the car was driven. I looked at the lighting housing and discovered that both the plug and housing had melted due to a brown wire. I will be taking the car to the shop tomorrow to get fixed but it seems more damage could have been done unless I discovered the existence of the problem.

8 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 06/20/2012

The grounding wire in the connector to the tail light bulb holder melted and melted parts of the connector. This resulted in no signal, brake and running rear lights. A recall has been called for BMW e46 3 series for this exact problem. The recall should be expanded to cover the 5 series as well.

9 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 03/30/2012

The warning came on that the right rear tail light malfunctioned. Within the next few days the warning went away but then came back intermittently and also stated that the right rear brake light and turn signal had malfunctioned. These warnings go on and off so my husband pulled the housing for the light out and discovered the connector plug and housing had melted because the brown wire was burnt and melted. So he went to the dealer ship to get another housing unit and new connector to fix the promblem. And a few months later the other side had the same issue and he replaced it as well. . . Now both are burnt again. I called the dealer ship to take my car in for this issue and they want $140 to look at it and they said they have not heard of this issue before. This is a safety issue and now that I look online it looks like a lot of people with this year, make and model have the same thing going on. This needs to be a recall. I feel like this will keep happening since both have beeen replaced already and it's happening again. Something is wrong.

10 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2008 BMW 528

Failure Date: 02/17/2012

Ground wire for passenger side tail light burned up. Ground wire, both sides of electrical connector, and tail light bulb holder all burned up. Passenger side brake light, tail light, turn signal and back up light do not function at all. Improperly rated fuse did not blow before circuit burned up and melted. This circuit is not designed correctly. This is a safety hazard to myself and anyone driving behind me. Car model is a 2008 528i.
