3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW 535

Failure Date: 10/10/2020

On October 10th, 2020 at approximately 830am, I was driving westbound on the 118 fwy, my 2012 BMW 535i suddenly lost power. I tried to give it more gas but it would not go faster. It immediately gave me an error pointing to the fuel system. I was able to exit the freeway safely. After being inspected by a certified mechanic, it was determined that both of my fuel pumps need to be replaced. There is a recall for fuel pumps for the 2012 BMW 535i but my specific VIN number does not fall under the recall. It's obvious I have the same issue as other 2012 BMW 535i.

4 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 535

Failure Date: 07/17/2020

Several times I was placed in peril while traveling at high rates of speed then the car stalls on us highway 95. There were also times when the car stalled while driving less than 35mph. When this happens I have no real control to steer the wheel, no prior warning or issues with the car to indicate it would stall. It is extremely traumatizing. Traumatizing! message of "fuel pump malfunction. Moderate driving possible". Car stalls while in motion whether it is 20mph or 65mph. Initial malfunction in July was after 1hr of driving then several times after that periodically as the car isn't driven often due to stay at home restrictions. The issue could not be duplicated at two auto mechanic shops, in fact by the time the tow truck arrived, the car started and was able to be driven onto the truck. There is no pattern of driving behavior or messages between failure / stall and as months went on, the time between stall and inability to start the car shortened from driving1hr to driving 10 minutes. BMW of the main line replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter and stall and error issue remains. Wiring to fuel pump issue possible. There are several open complaints on the exact same issue. . 9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 535

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

When attempting to bring vehicle up to speed on the on-ramp of the highway, the "fuel pump warning" will display on screen. This is then followed by a loss of power in the engine until the engine stops and the vehicle no longer runs. Vehicle has been towed and diagnosed as the high pressure fuel pump be technician. 11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 BMW 535

Failure Date: 06/05/2019

Fuel pump randomly causes engine failure during normal driving conditions causing it to malfunction, stall engine, and endanger the cars occupants saftey in normal to heavy traffic conditions. The fuel pump will reset itself after 5-10 minutes and the car will start again allowing it to then safely exit the roadway. . This issue is random in occurance. It could happen twice in one day, or it could happen only twice in one month.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 535

Failure Date: 05/15/2019

Vehicle stalls, hesitates when driving. Message on the dash says that the fuel pump is failing, but can be driven with decreased performance and to bring the vehicle to BMW. Brought the car to BMW service and they told me that there was a recall on the fuel pump but my car is not covered because I have 159k miles one the said vehicle. Upon further investigation with the service advisor, (carlos - norwalk BMW), who is polite and helpful, we found that the car had already been serviced for three same problem at least 3 times. First is in 2009 when they replaced the high pressure fuel pump. After folloa year 2010, the same problem occurred. The dealership again replaced the same fuel pump. Then on 2013, having the same problem again, the dealership replaced the injectors but the problem is still occurring. The problem had been ongoing and this time, they will not fix the issue because the vehicle is over the 120k miles. I believe that BMW is responsible for the problem that the vehicle was never properly fix in the first place. At least 3 times of having the same problem (that was documented by BMW), and still not resolved! it is a good car, but can be dangerous and could cause an accident. I will not let my wife drive it anymore until I feel it is safe. Problem is intermittent. At low speed, idling, and at highway speeds which can be really scary. I hope they will take responsibility and actually find and fix the issue.

High pressure fuel pump failed. This part has been highly publicized as faulty. Including recalls and extended warrantees. The failure at high speeds caused stalling and was very dangerous. BMW failed to replace for free the high pressure fuel pump and charged me full price. Failure to honor recall/warranty. It has been noted 150,000 plus vehicles are affected. This needs to be a mandatory recall and paid in full by BMW. Seeking investigation and reimbursement. I have the invoice if needed.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW 535

Failure Date: 04/23/2019

The recall number 16v746000 on 2012 BMW fuel pump is insufficiently executed by the manufacturer as it did not include my car (VIN # wbafu7c51cdu65024). I have encountered a safety hazard during driving and the car stalled in the middle of busy expressway. Cannot restart and car towed with help from police. After dealer diagnose problem with fuel pump but refuse to honor the recall on my fix even it is of same model and year. Apparently manufacturer did not include "all" affected vehicles affected with the defective parts. Please open another recall or extend the recall of affected vehicles. I have filed a complaint to BMW north America and hopefully your agency can followup on this.

16 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW 535

17 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW 535

Failure Date: 03/28/2019

While waiting behind another vehicle to make a left hand turn my vehicle stalled and would not restart. However, whenever I opened the door it would start and stop when the door was closed. The vehicle was towed to sloane BMW of devon, PA. Sloane said the problem was the fuel pump and fuel pump module which they replaced for which I was charged $1585. 62. However, this was not the end. On 3/28/19 while passing another vehicle on a 4 lane highway the engine light came on and the vehicle started shaking and decelerating. Other drivers behind me couldn't understand what was happening and made some dangerous moves. Fortunately a driver in the right lane allowed me to get the vehicle to the shoulder of the road. I took the car back to sloane BMW as he fuel pump that they had replaced was under warranty. Sloane decided that "the engine eccentric shaft adjustment motor is internally faulty and charged me $169. 99. Tech reported "all performed normally" despite not finding a problem with the eccentric shaft sloane recommended replacement at a cost of $6109. 71. Later when copies of the test were requested sloane said they didn`t have them. As a result I am still driving a vehicle that presents a danger to my life in order to gt to work. I have contacted mr. Claus eberhart vp after sales and mr. Ian robertson, board member at BMW north America but neither responded. The only guidance that I have been able to was in an article I found online that recommended caution when accelerating. In addition I have found that there was a recall 16v746000 for fuel pump and module for which I was never notified. Regarding sloane BMW of devon, PA. I have found that they have committed consumer fraud, "I had a problem opening the trunk, sloane said it was due to the latch- wanted $677 repair. On line found that trunk could be opened by switch in the storage box. Latch works trunk opens.

Fuel pump failures, car shut down while driving on the highway (numerous times) lost power steering while going over 60 mph. Cost over $10,000 to make repairs on the vehicle because BMW said it is no longer under warranty.

24 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 535

Failure Date: 05/26/2018

The car shuts off unexpectedly when it's being used because of the fuel pump. I think it's unfair that the 2008 models got recalls up to 10 yrs and 120,000 miles. I feel like the 2009 BMW xi was missing from this recall. The same high pressure fuel pump was the problem for the recall. I'm both close to reaching my 120,000 miles or the 10 yr mark so it would be amazing to see something being done about this soon.

25 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 535

Failure Date: 04/05/2018

Stopped in traffic at a red light after approximately 15 minutes of driving. The light turned green and upon acceleration, the engine stopped in the middle of the intersection. The "fuel pump" warning came up on my screen. The vehicle would not start. The vehicle was towed to the repair shop where it did not exhibit any problems, according to the mechanic the vehicle ran fine. Nonetheless, the fuel pump was replaced. Drove the car for two days before it broke down again. Same scenario, stopped at a stop sign, proceeded to accelerate and the engine stopped. Vehicle had to be towed to the repair shop for the second time in three days. Awaiting to see if a new hpfp will resolve the issue.

29 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW 535

Failure Date: 01/22/2018

Nhtsa recall number 16v746; in-tank fuel pump: this fuel pump consist of 2 parts: a high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) and a low pressure fuel pump (lpfp). After contacting BMW pacific in glendale ,CA. I was told that they will replace the low pressure fuel pump only. My question: is it only one part of the fuel pump included in this recall??? after contacting my mechanic (a BMW ex master technician employee), I am concerned that not replacing the whole unit (hpfp and lpfp unit fuel pump) will keep the problem alive and it will give the false impression that the problem was taken care of. . . . . My car has shown uneven start ups in the morning and engine codes related the fuel pump malfunction. This include in motion and stationary. . . .

30 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 535

Failure Date: 10/27/2017

My 2009 BMW 535i xdrive has been owned by me for 6 years. It has less than 90,000 miles on it. Since I became owner, it had 2 fuel pump failures, one water pump failure, and now fuel injector failure. When its fuel injectors failed on 10/27/17, the car's engine started shaking right after I turned it on. The car was parked overnight and I proceeded on the side street at 10 miles an hour speed towards work in the morning. Car then lost power and would not accelerate. Very dark, dense, black smoke was coming out of the tail pipe. After towing it to the dealer because it was unsafe to drive, I have been told by BMW dealer that the fuel injectors are malfunctioning and rather than spraying the fuel inside the engine, they were dumping it in large amounts instead. This created a state of too much unburned fuel inside the engine and it caused the black smoke. Cost of repair estimate was $3075. I was told that the catalytic converter may have been affected as well due to this dysfunction and as a result I might need replacement as well adding another $1500 to the cost. I have learned of similar reports of fuel injectors problems in this particular model, placing the cars, the drivers, and the passengers at risk. Seeing the dark, dense, black smoke coming out of the tail pipe seemed very unsafe and extremely hazardous and should trigger recall of such deficient fuel injectors. I believe the fuel injector malfunction caused an abnormal fire inside the engine which caused such dark smoke to occur.

31 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW 535

Failure Date: 10/17/2017

I was driving my BMW 535 xi on interstate highway. All of a sudden cars gave a message of "drivetrain malfunction: contact your service centre". After that car's power reduced. After that whenever I apply brake, the car ignition stopped and car puts itself in neutral. I had to start the car around 8 times to reach home safely. After that I towed the car to nearby BMW service. BMW dealership told me that my car's high pressure fuel pump is not working. This is traumatic experience as I was on interstate and sudden stalling on interstate could have been fatal for me as well as my passenger.

32 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 535

Failure Date: 08/27/2017

Fuel pump cut out unexpectedly while driving at posted speed limit of 60 mph. Almost run over by tractor trailer while pulling car to side of the road. Car was later re-started.

33 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 535

Failure Date: 08/08/2017

I am requesting NHTSA investigate this known dangerous defect and issue a mandated recall to protect the public. Fuel pump failure or related failures can cause a car to be unable to move out of a dangerous highway after engine power failure at idle, causing risk to human life. On 08-08-17, I was on interstate in stopped traffic. My 2009 BMW 535xi with 115, 502 miles on it quit running. Traffic cleared and I could not get the vehicle to start, run, and move. It would start, but it would then quit running before I could place it in gear. Interstate traffic was approaching at 60 to 70 mph. My three passengers got out and pushed the vehicle while I steered it in neutral, not running, off the roadway. We had a near miss collision from approaching vehicles on the interstate. The dash display said "high pressure fuel pump failure. " after sitting 5 minutes, the car started and appeared to run normally. I e-mailed BMW and they said they had extended their warranty on high pressure fuel pump to 10 years or 120,000 miles, and said take it to BMW service center. On 08-10-17 BMW dealer diagnosed it and said it was the "low pressure fuel pump located inside the fuel tank had failed. " they offered to replace it at a cost of $2,079. 90, stating "BMW does not offer recalls. " four people were almost killed. BMW has "extended the warranty to 120,000 miles on high pressure fuel pump" but not on the "low pressure fuel pump. " I asked service tech if he was sure it was "low pressure fuel pump failure" if vehicle could run intermittently. He offered no satisfactory explanation, comparing it to a "light bulb than can work some times and not work some times. " I am requesting NHTSA investigate this known dangerous defect and issue a mandated recall to protect the public.

34 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW 535

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

My vehicle recently had the lo pressure fuel pump recall completed. I was hoping that it would correct the fuel related diagnostic trouble codes and the vehicle stalling and going into reduced power mode. However, this recall failed to correct these problems. I have now learned that my high pressure fuel pump is failing. My local BMW dealer informed me that this vehicle does not qualify for the extended free replacement of the high pressure fuel pump based on the VIN even thoe it is the same n54 engine that other BMW vehicles have that is covered under the recall. Symptoms, while driving my vehicle on slight acceleration I get a warning on the dash that states "reduced power mode" at that point the check engine light comes on and I loose power in the vehicle. At times the vehicle will shut completely down while driving. The vehicle has an extended crank time as well but always seems to start.

35 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW 535

Failure Date: 06/30/2017

BMW recall campaign no. 16v-746 in-tank fuel pump. BMW ag has decided that the above fuel tank listed above is defective which relates to motor vehicle safety. This notice was sent in December of 2016, which stated the parts were unavailable. Although, the letter stated I would be contacted when parts became available. It is now eight months into year 2017 without this issue being resolved. Also, over time, the fuel pump connector can become damaged. If this happens, a foul odor may be noticed. This could also lead to a fuel leak during fueling, or when cornering while driving. The fuel pump could also stop working and lead to a no start or stalling condition. We have noticed, a faint gas odor and slight stalling with the vehicle, especially with starting and taking off. This has happened when the vehicle was stationary and in motion. When the car was serviced by BMW specialist, we were encouraged to get the fuel pump replaced in a timely manner due to the recall.
