BMW n63 engine powertrain issues 2012 535i the n63 engine, utilized in various BMW models including the 2012 535i, has been subject to multiple customer complaints regarding premature timing chain wear and other powertrain-related issues. This led BMW to introduce a "customer care package," detailed in technical service bulletin (TSB) b110614, to address the concerns reported by multiple owners and noted by the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) under id number 11016414. A primary cause of the issue is accelerated timing chain wear. The n63 engine's design features timing chains that are prone to stretching prematurely. This stretching can disrupt the precise timing of the engine's valves, leading to a cascade of problems. As a consequence, owners have reported a variety of symptoms, including the illumination of the "drivetrain malfunction" warning light, noticeable engine noise, excessive vibration, and potentially catastrophic engine failure. The "drivetrain malfunction" message, in particular, is a frequently cited indicator of this underlying powertrain problem. To address these widely reported issues, the n63 customer care package was implemented. This service bulletin instructs authorized BMW technicians to perform a series of diagnostic tests. The main objective is to detect if the timing chains have stretched beyond acceptable tolerances. If excessive wear is confirmed, the TSB provides a detailed procedure for the necessary repairs. This often involves replacing the timing chains and related components to restore proper engine function. Beyond the core timing chain replacement, the customer care package also includes several proactive and preventative measures. Technicians are instructed to check and potentially replace other components, such as fuel injectors and boost solenoids, which may have been impacted or contributed to the engine's performance issues. Furthermore, the service includes reprogramming the vehicle's software.

I believe using the manual shift mode for normal usage of optimal shifting in certain driving situations and gentle downshifting caused a malfunction in the functionality of the transmission that led to a complete transmission failure. I don’t believe it’s a mechanical issue or result of misuse. There were no warning signs. Only that every time the manual shift option was used, it would cause an error to occur that caused an automatic shifting issue that would reset if the vehicle was shut down and restarted.

The vehicle is having cooling/ heat problems. Does not overheat while driving but rather driving on high temp. Cools to norm temp here and there. My best thought is electrical. Also same vehicle rattles in rear center when going 65mph. . Not sure the cause is.

The contact owns a 2012 BMW 535i. The contact stated that while driving at 20 mph, the vehicle stalled as the drivetrain malfunction warning message flashed on the instrument panel. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start up after multiple attempts. The contact had a friend replace the battery; however, the failure persisted. The contact then had the vehicle towed to a dealer where they diagnosed the vehicle with a defective fuel pump. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA campaign number: 16v746000 (fuel system, gasoline) which she linked to the failure. The manufacturer was notified and informed her that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.

A warning came on for drivetrain malfunction and the engine started to choke and lose power while driving.
The back and front axles aren't reliable at all. All four on my car are damaged and every time I go over a bump it's a violent sound and feeling.
I was driving on the highway and vehicle sent an overheating message and instantly the power to the motor was cut off causing the vehicle to rapidly slow down with no brake signal so the rear car almost rear ended the vehicle due to the signal cutting power to the engine during the overheat message, once I was able to pull over and stop it was fine? I checked the coolant after I got home and it was at the level required, after I was able to the read the codes it showed waterpump ? I recently saw recalls for 2011 BMW 5 series on water pump issues, I would like to ad this problem and or safey issue to be noticed, if all those vehicles are being reported to have waterpump issues ,l believe my car should be on that list of recalls as well , they all have the same water pump ,so that would effect all models 6 clyinder ,8 cylinder etc,, tthe after a month of no codes no issues, I pulled into my driveway to get something from the house, I left the car running, when I cam out it had sent an over heat signal again, when the car wasnt overheating? it was just weird, it might be wise to include all vehicles with the 2010-2011 style water pump to be replaced and look into the power cut off due to the failure of the pumps/and or their electrical systems which are being recalled , please let know if my car can be added to the recall so it could be replaced because it has the same issues as the other models that recalled, havent driven on the highway since, scared I might get rear ended, if the power cuts off to slow the vehicle brake lights should go on or some indicator to let vehicles following behind know the vehicle is slowing down, live and learn I geuss,.
I was driving home stopped at a red light , then turned green went to accelerate car took off and lost all power would not move pressing accelerator and 2 semi trucks coming real fast from cross traffic almost killed me light turned red for me and green for semi trailers with no time to exit car.
Drivetrain malfunction is on may be due to a bad fuel pump or engine coils.
The car lunges/jerks at random times during startup. It does this whether the car is cold, hot and at random times during the day or evening. The vehicle is stationary when this occurs. Engine mounts have been replaced and transmission mount if in good working order. The dealer cannot identity the problem. At times the jerk is barely noticeable but other times the jerk is harsh and I fear the the car will move forward while parked.

Drivetrain malfunction -driving on hwy when error was displayed and car shutdown in on me and would not start back up -dealership stated they replaced the fuel pump -issue happened again -while driving - under 3000 miles later - same error codes of low pressure - car hesitant to crank and studdering on low speeds- towed to dealer was told no issue found and they reprogrammed the fuel pump -same issue again - fuel line and sensor replaced -ran fine for another 1000 miles or so -while driving the car jerked really hard and gave the same drivetran malfunction error --was able to make it to the dealership however car would not drive at full speed- same codes seen stored -- BMW do not know whats causing the issue however replacing parts hoping it will fix the issue and charging me for their trial and error. -since 2 more parts replaced car now with new error and of course BMW has no clue but want to charge me another 1000 to replace another part.
Drive train malfunction: drive moderately caused by valvetronic motor and eccentric shaft. At 50k miles.
After bringing my car to BMW of buena park to take care of a couple of recalls, a couple of miles after I get on the freeway at about 60 mph the car lost power and I heard the emergency sound on my dashboard, the emergency light came on and a message on my screen saying drive moderately, maximum drive train output not available the car did not stop but lost lots of power.
I was driving my family and my enging cut off on and the car would not start nor go into any gear took it to my mechanic and was told that my car might be on a recall list because it jas reach over 70000mi now I don't know what to to.
Driving family down the highway around 65 mph. I loose all power in the cabin. The car starts throwing all warning lights, abs, steering, sway control, transmition, etc. Engine still running would not shift into neutral had to use e brake to pull over then it wanted to keep going had to turn car off to stop it. Called tow truck sent family home.
This recall has my powertrans not preforming as it should. I brought the car in 2017 and this recall was never done. I turn my car in to the dealership and since then I have been taking my car frequently to mechanics for powertrans problems. When I take it to the dealership they tell me they don't see a fault for the powertrans it as soon as I leave the fault returns. I paid money for numerous diagnostics for this problem and I still have the same issue. This problem occurs after reaching speeds over 65 mph.
Took my 2011 BMW 535i xdrive with 68k miles in to get state inspection at the BMW dealership. I was told it failed inspection because cv boot was torn and that thrust rod bushing, axle and cv boot need to be replaced. There is a safety recall that only affect 8700 cars for same or similar problem. I think the safety recall needs to be expanded. The cv boots and cv joints are a known problem by the dealers and a very expensive repair. BMW is happy with the service revenue . . . As long as it falls outside the warranty. Talking a very expensive repair for something BMW knows about . . . Oh and yeah "if the cv joint breaks the vehicle may have a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash" (safety bulletin 17v067000.
Driving on freeway 65 mph and vehicle looses power completely power steering power brakes lost. Engine just shut off errors appear such as p142e or malfunction however when restarting vehicle 5+min later no errors and codes appear resulting in no failures no possibilty to diagnose found 4 incidents occured 2 near fatal collisions note: BMW code list has no recommendation for resolving only that p142e is shutdown of engine this coding of ecu allowed by BMW is dangerous to human lives.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 BMW 535i. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle suddenly slowed down and the "engine power malfunction" indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an unknown BMW dealer in columbia, south carolina where the technician was unable to duplicate the failure. The failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,900.
While driving drive train light comes on, made appointment and was informed that the left cv joint boot was torn and leaking. Had it fixed on October 2016, paid over $1700. In September 2017 drive train light comes on again, was informed that the left and the right cv joint boots were torn/leaking had it repaired and this time it cost $4094. Noticed that there was a recall for the rear cv joint and want to know if the front should be included in the recall.
Fuel pump cut out unexpectedly while driving at posted speed limit of 60 mph. Almost run over by tractor trailer while pulling car to side of the road. Car was later re-started.
Vehicle has issues in line with the recall that has been extended for some VIN numbers under recall number #16v746000. The vehicle has had items noted under the recall fixed at the expense of the vehicle owner. Currently the high pressure fuel pump has been replaced, as has the battery without making any change on the vehicles performance. It is currently in the dealers hands (for the last month) with Bmwna currently reviewing the service records to see if they will cover the issue. The vehicle has experienced issues while merging into traffic, accelerating, and daily ddriving.

While driving on a rural highway to work the car shutdown completly. I had the car towed to the mechanic for a diagnotic check. The car needed alternator and water pump. I called BMW because there is a recall on the water pump on my vehicle. The customer service rep stated that recalls are vendor specific. That does not make since to me since cars are made on an assembly line.
Vehicle was previously driven the day before drove perfect no problems, the day after the vehicle when you put in drive or reverse it would automatically go back to park on it's own and would not move the vehicle was parked in the drive way as normal. I had vehicle towed to BMW they diagnosed as the mechatronic sleeve needed replacing they charged me 1300 dollars my wife picked the car up and drove 50 miles and the car started doing the same previous behavior I contacted BMW they had me to tow back to their dealership a second time both tows cost me 125 dollars each the car was then diagnosed as needing a 9000 transmission and I was told the previous repair that I paid for would not be credited toward the new transmission I'm outraged. My service advisor is john ard at tom williams BMW in irondale alabama.
Drive train malfunction light comes on from time to time. Message: "dirvetrain malfunction; maximum output not available. " loss of power. Told by dealer service department (otto's BMW) to stop car and turn it on again. It runs just fine after this is done. But intermittent loss of power while driving on the highway is very very dangerous. I called the state trooper the first time this happened (in 2012 when the car was practically new, having less than 20,000 miles) to provide cover.

Drive train malfunction, engine over heats and does not function the same. The vehicle slows down, sputters and does not have power. It has died out on the highway while going 65mph and had to pull over suddenly through 3 lanes of traffic.
It has acceleration issues all of the time. Does not accelerate as it should, instead it jerks. When at a stop sign or light and looking to accelerate it would jerk making it unsafe. I have almost hit multiple vehicle ecause of this.
