BMW 5 Series owners have reported 17 problems related to warning light on (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My passenger air bag warning light came on about a month ago for apparent reason and stay on ever since. I contacted the local BMW dealer and was told my VIN was not on the recall list. I was very disappointed and dont understand why some cars were on the recall and some were not. Apparently this is a common problem with all Bmws and a very serious safety issue. This safety issue should be taken care of by the manufacture.

I had an on & off issue since last week of this year about the airbag & seatbelt warning being illuminated on the dashboard & overhead console of my 2007 BMW 530 xi. It will stay on for a while as I start the car but will turn off by itself after driving a few miles. Now since last week the warning light stays on. The idrive screen shows " pass. Restraints system fault in passenger-restraints system affecting the airbag, belt tensioner or belt-force limiter. Continue to wear the seatbelt. Have the system checked by BMW service center". I did some research online about this issue & found out that there is recall NHTSA campaign number: 13v564000. I called BMW of tenafly and informed them about the issue I'm having on my vehicle but I was told that the VIN# of my car is not associated with the recall even though it falls into the same category of make, model & year of vehicles being recalled with the same problem. This is a very serious defect and definitely a safety concern that needs to be addressed.

The front passenger seat sensor triggers the safety warning light on all the time. It may affect the airbag operable. This is a known issue and was subject of a voluntary recall program in 2008 by BMW. Despite many other car owners (as evidenced by complaints to NHTSA and online car forums), including myself, having this issue as described within the recall program for cars of the make and year of the production, only 200k within a specific VIN range were recalled.
The passenger restraint airbag/seat belt warning light show up because the mat sensor under passenage seat is broken by normal use. BMW refuse to honor the free fix for this issue and wanted to charge around $1300 for the repair the safty issue.
On my BMW 2006 530i, the passenger airbag warning light indicating a restraint failure. I saw a recall on the NHTSA web site (campaign id 08v384000) covering the 2004- 2006 model year BMW 5 Series with this exact problem. My vehicle was built in may 2005. I contacted BMW USA to report the safety failure. BMW said it was not covered and has refused to offer any assistance. I asked them to explain why if my vehicle, is in the middle model years and experiencing the same problem, why the recall does not apply. Their reply, BMW will not honor the recall, it's my problem. This is a safety issue that could cause injury or death. Please review this campaign id and expand or issue a new recall. BMW would not help me in this matter. Thank you for reviewing this safety concern,.

The approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 102,000. Updated 05/24/lj updated 05/25/11.
While driving, the passenger airbag warning light was on, and the airbag was disabled, although there is passenger sitting there.
Air bag warning light illuminates with adult passenger firmly belted into passenger seat. Light remains illuminated for periods which vary from 5 minutes to 30 minutes. There is no way to tell if this is a defective light only or if the air bag is inoperative. An additional safety concern is that BMW diagnostic techniques are not able to detect this failure. BMW refuses to correct the defect.

Air bag / passive restraint system warning light is illuminated on my 2006 BMW 525ix with the exact same symptoms reported on the recall for 5 Series 2006 models. However, BMW is stating that my VIN is not one of the impacted models. I believe this problem is part of the know issues and my vehicle should be included in the recall. A consumer should not have to pay $1,500 to have a safety feature working. I am hoping that you can include my VIN in the recall since the symptoms are exactly as reported in he recall statement.
2004 BMW 530 I. The consumer complained about several electrical problems, such as air bag warning light coming on/windows rolling down and then malfunctioning/trunk opening, and halo lights staying on. The onstar or sos systems was not working. Took the vehicle to the dealership. The manufacturer considered this vehicle a lemon. The dealership and manufacturer were not complying with the lemon law. This process was to buy back the vehicle. They were taking too long to resolve this matter.
