36 Equipment problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/17/2024

I am filing this complaint regarding the recall on my 2022 BMW X3, which involves the interior rear cargo rails. The recall, added to the NHTSA database over a month ago, indicates that in an extreme rear crash, the attachment between the rear cargo rail and the vehicle body could become damaged. This issue could lead to the rail separating from the vehicle body, increasing the risk of injury. Despite the significant safety risk outlined in the recall, there has been no update on when repair kits will be made available to service centers to begin the necessary repairs. This delay in providing the remedy is causing concern as it leaves my vehicle potentially unsafe for an extended period. I urge the NHTSA to look into the timeliness of this repair process to ensure that the necessary parts are distributed promptly to mitigate the associated safety risks.

37 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/15/2024

Upon starting the vehicle, the electronic dashboard comes on, declares “reduced driver assistance” then about 15 seconds later, the entire dashboard goes dark and won’t come back on until the car has been shut down for several minutes. This sequence of events happens 95% of the time that I start the car. Upon restart, the dashboard will stay on about 40% of the time, the other 60% it shuts off again. While I can still see my speed in the heads up display, I have no idea how much gas I have, I can’t get any information from the dahsboard and I can’t use the cruise control. I’ve read about other owners of the 2021 BMW X3 m40i having this same issue however the dealership seems to have no idea and wants me to spend $1,000 in diagnostics to see if they can find the problem…. Then I would have to pay to have it fixed as well. This seems like a pretty big safety issue.

40 Equipment problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

This BMW vehicle's odometer readings are inconsistent and inaccurate resulting in overage of mileage for lessee. This cars BMW tires were not verifiable to be from BMW and tires subsequently failed within 15,000 miles. No entity at BMW, not the dealership, not the sales, not BMW financial services or BMW of north America llc could provide any information regarding the original tires or provide any warranty information regarding the tires - this impact mileage efficiency, miles per gallon and is a way to game the systems. BMW front sensors on act erratically sometimes working and sometimes going off without anything present, during rain/snow sensors would constantly go off for no reason. Issues have been raised through certified mail to BMW and all have been ignored. There is no accountability regarding the tires with no warranty that fail, inaccurate odometer readings, car sensors and we request an investigation into these three matters.

41 Equipment problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

Since purchasing the vehicle, the illumination of the instrument cluster, information center screen, and sometimes the climate controls dim partially or completely during daytime driving. This occurs randomly and frequently at times. Reported this to BMW service at least three times since purchasing the vehicle. BMW service could not identify the issue but flashed the on-board software at least twice as a possible fix. Neither episode corrected the problem and BMW says they don't know what is going on since the issue has not reported an error code. I understand this issue, or issues generally similar, has been experienced by other BMW owners across this and other BMW model lines. BMW north America has washed their hands of this isse and the dealeers have no idea how to diagnose and fix it.

42 Equipment problem of the 2024 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/24/2024

Whenever the vehicle is driven, despite the temperature, the panoramic moon roof cracks and creaks and sounds like it is going to break. The dealer said numerous people have also complained about this happening and BMW will not do anything about it. This is my 3rd X3 of this body style and my other two did not have this issue because BMW didn't "cheapen" out on the window sealant and materials of the lining and mounts in the sunroof until the lci redesign or 2023. I am afraid that one of these days it will crack and break downward, causing a major safety hazard while driving and I want BMW to fix and/or remedy the problem(s) ASAP.

43 Equipment problem of the 2022 BMW X3

44 Equipment problem of the 2014 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/02/2024

Several warning lights flashed on and off while driving. My display/computer turned off and rebooted while driving. A day or two later the electric rear hatch stopped working. I opened the cover in the back where the spare is, and found several inches of water (4-5) in the well. I called the dealer first thing since it was a frightening thought thinking the car may blow up or trigger the airbag making me (or whoever is driving the car) crash into someone else. To my surprise there was no warning or recall on the problem. A surprise since a simple google search turned up pages of complaints, chat rooms and discussions concerning the same issue. This is where the battery is stored in this car. The battery was sitting in inches of water even though it is slightly elevated. The control module for the electric hatch (according to a schematic found by google) although in a separate raised styrofoam holder, was halfway submerged in water. Under the side panel was wet. In that side panel is the fuse/ relay panel. Water was dripping down the side of that wall and the insulation was wet and dripping at the bottom and into the bay. The safety of myself, the driver, or my wife the primary driver of the car could be affected in many unexpected/ unknown ways with a short on the fuse panel or worse yet water sloshing around a big 12 volt car battery. Could it explode? I don’t know. I vacuumed out the water and it has come back and fills a substantial amount in a couple weeks. About one inch per week. It is certainly ongoing. My wife won’t drive it so deduction tells me it is not coming in from driving it. It is available for inspection although I have not driven it to the dealer since it has been quite wet and is some distance away. I tried to follow your format and include all your requested details. If I have left anything out I am happy to answer any questions. Thank you for the opportunity to bring this to someone’s attention. Thanks again, jim haws.

45 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

In June 2023, I purchased a vehicle from enterprise car sales. Around June 2024, I reached out to them with concerns about the vehicle. They recommended I contact either the insurance or warranty company, but neither could address my issue. I then took the vehicle to the dealership, and they agreed to inspect it. They confirmed that the windshield and rear window molding trim were aftermarket parts, which were causing streaks on the window and obstructing the driver’s view. Additionally, the brakes and tires had been replaced with non-recommended parts, though I was willing to cover the cost of replacing these two items out of pocket.

46 Equipment problem of the 2018 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/23/2024

2018 BMW X3 m40i - after the car was washed in a car wash, the tailgate started opening and closing on its own. Would open all the way up, wait a few seconds then close all the way down and lock itself. It happened about 20 times until it stopped on its own. This started immediately after the car was parked in the garage. Did not happen while driving. The button on the remote control was not pressed at all. The tailgate would beep and flash the taillights when opening and closing.

47 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/07/2024

At this time nothing has happened yet. However, the recall notification clearly indicates the possible dangerous situations that can result. And, it seems to me that the idea behind a recall is to remedy the problem and avoid the possibility of a harmful event happening on the road. I have spoken with a BMW dealer and no one has suggested that the car should be inspected to see if there nis a problem or not. . Also, there have been no warning lamps or other symptoms or messages yet. Safety for myself and the vehicle is put at risk by the very fact that this recall has been issued as of October 20, 2023. I would very much like to avoid the possibility of any of the incidents happening that are listed in the "additional details" list below.

48 Equipment problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/22/2024

On the 2019 BMW X3, we’ve experienced the tailgate opening while the vehicle is in traffic, and the transmission is in ‘d’ drive. The safety hazard I’m suggesting be investigated is that the buttons on the remote key fob to the vehicle, including lock, unlock, tailgate, and panic, all work even if the vehicle is turned on and driving. This poses a serious safety risk to not only occupants of the vehicle, objects or animals that may be in the trunk, but also to other motorists on the road. We’ve personally had this happen three times, all in cases where we were in live traffic on an active roadway. One case in particular our dog was in the trunk and we had to pull over in the middle of traffic while the dog thankfully stayed seated in the trunk area. I believe this happens because it’s very common for the key fob to be in a pocket or purse while operating the vehicle, where it’s very possible for the buttons to be pressed inadvertently. In my opinion, the key fob should not be functional while the car’s ignition is on. No other car I’ve ever owned has had a key fob whose buttons still work while the ignition is on. Happy give further comment if need be. Thanks.

49 Equipment problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/01/2024

This issue affects nearly all modern vehicles that support only dark mode for backlit/light-imitting dashboard/infotainment screens. Back-lit, white text on a black background is very difficult to read for some people with certain medical conditions. For example, my wife has an intraocular lens implant. She can read road signs and physical 'white on black' text fine, but the led backlit screen white text on a black screen causes the white lettering to glare and be blurry, making it difficult to read. I see this as a safety issue as she has to spend more time trying to read the dashboard and ac/radio controls. Simple fix - require all auto manufacturers to include both a dark mode and a light mode for electronic displays. Currently the only ones I'm aware of who have a light mode display are Tesla and Hyundai.

50 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/15/2023

Sirrus xm advertising pops up in the middle of the speedometer and stays there. Blocks vision of speedometer. Big blue square comes on at night distracting driver. Several internet posts and complaints advise that it comes on blocking the rear camera vision. Contacted sirrus they say they cant do anything about it, it is built into the car. Contacted BMW and their "genius" squad they don't know how to get rid of it. I see postings of other car brands having the same complaint. Consumers don't spend $70. 000. 00 for a vehicle to be solicited for a service that they don't want. Besides the safety factor. This is an invasion of privacy and none requested solicitation. Please look into this.

51 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/08/2023

Driving on a highway with occasional traffic lights, my 2021 X3 plugin hybrid's sunroof's from glass cracked with a loud bang. I had it closed and the sun shade part also was closed. The loud bank also felt like an impact on my head and I felt in a bit of a shock like the time I was hit from behind with a shock and having to think. I first though it was a tire and slowed down to safely exit into a business parking lot to asses the situation. After checking the tires I noticed something on the roof. The glass was cracked and deformed in an upward direction. It was still pushing upward and a 4-6 inch section fell off and onto the top of the sun shade part. In safety, the loud shock caused a brief distraction on a highway going at least 50 mph. Also if the sun shade was open some of the glass could have fallen on me. . Read more...

52 Equipment problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/13/2023

The X3 suddenly slowed down to stoppage on an interstate highway, and the car "shifted" to neutral by itself. I had to shift back to "drive" and then drive away. It happened twice in September to October 2023, with my family and other kids in the car. Luckily there was traffic, driving speed was relatively low. Contacted two BMW dealerships and the only thing they could do was change the battery. They said maybe the battery wasn't functioning fully. However, BMW shouldn't stop my car on a highway just because the battery may be relatively low. No warning about battery was ever observed. Four pictures attached: error message 1 - increased steering effort on 10. 13. 23 error message 2 - transmission (suddenly "auto-shifted" to neutral) error message 3 - four-wheel-drive system error message 4 - front monitor suddenly turned on?.

53 Equipment problem of the 2018 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

My 2018 BMW X3 xdrive30i g01 series has been experiencing persistent overheating issues, even in cold temperatures as low as 40 degrees. The coolant reservoir boils vigorously while driving, but the temperature gauge does not indicate overheating, and no warning lights appear. The only alert displayed is a low coolant warning instructing to refill coolant or to top off. Recently, I noticed coolant and other fluids leaking from underneath the vehicle, along with a strong burning smell coming from the engine. Adding BMW brand antifreeze/coolant did not resolve the issue. Despite these ongoing issues, the authorized BMW dealership has refused to inspect the cooling system further because no fault codes appear. Independent repair shops have also been unable to diagnose the root cause. This presents a serious safety risk. The vehicle is overheating without warning, which could result in sudden engine failure while driving. The boiling coolant, burning smell, and fluid leaks also raise concerns about a potential fire hazard. This vehicle is now undrivable and unsafe. I urge NHTSA to immediately investigate potential cooling system and sensor defects in this model.

54 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/26/2023

Sun roof glass shattered while driving.

55 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/10/2023

Summary of complaint: we own a 2007 BMW X3 SUV that we have taken to the BMW mt. Laurel NJ dealership for service since we bought the car over five years ago. On August 15th 2023, we took the car for a scheduled service and oil change. We paid $3000 + and brought the car back home first week of September when the car was purportedly repaired. My husband noticed that the car was not driving quite well. The steering was tight. When we called BMW they told us it might take a few drives for things to get back to normal. Then our 29 yr old daughter came from nyc where she resides to visit is for the weekend. On Sunday sept 10th 2023, she went on an errand for us to moorestown area. At a stop sign when she was not moving the car, the car started a spin in all directions. The oncoming vehicles thankfully avoided hitting her and she was able to come to a stop. Our daughter was terrified. After calming down she called to let us know what happened. She was so shaken up she barely managed to drive back home. We then called BMW right away when they opened on Monday and told them what happened. They came to pick up the car from our house to check it out and see why it spun out of control in circles. Then the service dept called and said the car spun out of control due to a transfer case issue. I then questioned them why they did not properly diagnose this initially instead of us wasting $3000+ on repairs and still the car was not safe to drive. I then contacted robert durante the asst service manager and he has not been too nice. BMW should do the right thing. I just paid over $3000 for car repairs in September and car did a spin out on sept 10th less than two weeks after repairs was completed. The car was worse off when repairs was completed than when I brought it in. Way I see it, an inexperienced mechanic or a negligent mechanic worked on our car. I have never had any problems with repairing our car with the dealer service department till this incident.

56 Equipment problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/06/2023

Uro parts engine oil filter housing there was no sensors that went off to indicate that there was an issue with my coolant or my oil and I went to drive my car and broke down on the side of the road. The dealership and the repair shop and mechanics I’ve called have told me that this is a common issue with BMW because of how it's made. If I knew that there was a problem because of the sensors I would’ve never had to break down on the side of the road and be less stranded without a vehicle.

57 Equipment problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/22/2023

Driving in a rural area on a paved road when an explosion of the sun roof glass occurred showering the driver and passenger with glass. Most of the glass blew away from the vehicle as the window exploded upward. A noise like a shot gun. No warning no any justifiable cause for the incident.

This car does not have an accurate speedometer. The analog dial only marks the mph number every 20 miles (eg numbers shown for 20 / 40 / 60. But not for 10 / 30 / 50). So impossible to easily or safely see the speed you are going. There is no digital speedometer showing the mph number.

Failure Date: 03/08/2023

1. My car is very old and has 189,000 miles. Takata airbag recalls are now known and issued by the nhsta, it shows that I have 6 recalls and BMW does not see the recalls. As well as my brakes they are super soft and the only thing I did for the brakes is replace new brake pads they are oem and also my emergency parking brakes are not working. It is avaible for inspection. 2. My safety while driving the car is at risk because I dont know if the airbag will work or fail at any moment. 3. The problem has not been solved and BMW seattle states that, "we do not see any recalls, and I am not saying that there isn't but because of the age of the car I don't know. " BMW seattle service receptionist states. 4. The vehichle has not been inspected for any safety recalls or notices. I have tried to call them about the safety and they always deny and say I dont know. 5. First it was the engine warning and now the low tire preasure light. But I always keep my car on top of things. But like I said 6 recalls that BMW don't see and I have called them about is very concerning for my safety and they safety of my passengers as well as kids that ride with me.

61 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/01/2023

I parked my vehicle in front of my house for the night after driving for only about 15-20 minutes. Maybe less. Roughly 3-4 hours later, I was alerted to my car being completely up in flames by the sounds of fire trucks / police sirens. Flames were 20-30 feet in the air coming from the engine compartment area. Fire department / police worked to extinguish the flames, but the vehicle is totally destroyed.

62 Equipment problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/29/2023

I purchased this as a used car online and had it delivered to me. It hasn’t been a year of owning it yet and my car is now un-drivable. I was driving down the road and my transmission malf light came in and my car went into limp mode. I had to get it towed and the local shop who has it said it’s a broken timing chain from a failure. I’ve never had any issues and then all of a sudden now I have an estimate of $3627 to be able to drive my car. Upon researching, my model/year has a known issue for this happening. I feel stuck and don’t know what to do but feel like I need help so I can get my car back running. It barely has 105k miles on it. The dealership I purchased it from never mentioned any known issues with it.

Failure Date: 10/19/2022

We were towing a rental travel trailer (~3500 ib), going east bound on highway 80 near martinez, CA. The travel trailer suddenly went into oscillation, the amplitude got larger and larger, and finally both SUV and trailer landed on the sides on the embankment. The SUV was supposedly in "tow" mode, so the feature "trailer stabilization control" should have been activated to reduce the sway/oscillation (and perhaps issued some warnings). However, we only got traction control alarm just prior to the crash.

Failure Date: 10/07/2022

On 10/7/22 my wife started her 2021 BMW X3 and the instrument panel did not appear. She drove the vehicle to the local BMW dealership. After being told that the reported problem had not been previously reported by any other X3 owner, the dealer tested the vehicle. A scan returned a fault code, b7f8f9 hu-h. A software reset was performed and a test plan was conducted. Test plan directed technician to program vehicle due to unfavorable software. Vehicle was programmed to the latest integration level. Vehicle was test driven to confirm the repair.

67 Equipment problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/02/2022

While driving on the highway my rear hatch opened and I was not given any warning that the hatch was open. My car was full of luggage on our return trip to florida and I could not see that the hatch had opened. We lost boxes that were in the trunk. It could have been a lot worse if we were not notified by passing drivers that something was wrong with my car. Looking for previous issues this happened in 2019 for my model car, BMW X3. I do not understand why this has happened again.

68 Equipment problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/15/2022

As I was pulling into my assigned parking spot in my building complex. Both me and my 6yr old daughter were in the vehicle. As I was pulling into my parking spot and went to brake and put my vehicle in park- my brakes locked, gave out and the vehicle continued to proceed forward. As it proceeded forwarded, I immediately kept trying to brake- but because the vehicle is all wheel drive it accelerated forward pushing through the concrete parking bumper guard located on the floor of the parking spot. Because of the acceleration, the vehicle crashed into the storage units connected to the building structure. I immediately tried reversing and forced the car into park without braking. Thankfully my daughter was still in her car seat. It was terrifying and we were in so much panic and scared. My neighbors came to our rescue- because I was distraught knowing that we had literally just come off of the highway and that could have happened at any point with my child in the car. My insurance is able to cover the damages - but, the auto repairs do not consist of checking the brakes/malfunction. I cannot see myself staying with this vehicle and putting the safety of myself and daughter in jeopardy. I am praying that BMW takes the necessary measures to assist in addressing this.
