1 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/01/2026

I'm reporting a safety issue with BMW vehicles equipped with the b58 engine, primarily 2019-2021 models. These vehicles have an oil pump with an internal plastic component that regulates oil pressure, and this part is fracturing in the field, causing sudden loss of oil pressure. The failure typically occurs during cold starts in low temperatures. When it fails, oil pressure becomes erratic or is lost entirely, often with little to no warning before engine damage or vehicle disablement. Warning signs, when present, include inability to measure oil level electronically, abnormal oil pressure, or sudden drive train malfunction warnings. These can rapidly progress to engine shutdown or severe damage from oil starvation. This creates a dangerous situation because the vehicle can become disabled without warning while driving or after startup. This is especially hazardous when cars become immobilized in traffic or during winter conditions when failures occur most frequently, leaving occupants exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance. Pump replacement requires extensive disassembly and commonly costs $6,000-$8,000, assuming no engine damage. A critical concern: owners cannot determine if their vehicle has the original plastic pump or the later metal revision. BMW's VIN-based parts lookup now shows updated components even when original plastic parts remain installed, and BMW has removed the original plastic part number from dealer networks entirely. Failures are reported across multiple production years, and the scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this condition causes sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning, especially in cold weather, I believe this warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.

2 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/16/2026

It has come to my attention that liquid from the positive crankcase ventilation (pcv) system may leak onto the water pump electrical connector. This condition can lead to an electrical short circuit and, in rare cases, may increase the risk of a vehicle fire. This issue presents a serious safety concern for vehicle owners and others on the road. A failure of this nature, especially one that carries a fire risk, warrants immediate review and corrective action. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate this matter and determine whether a safety recall is necessary to address this defect. The dealership noticed the leak beginning at the weep hole of the waterpump. No incident occurred this is for preventive measures and review for recall and reimbursement.

3 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/02/2026

We had an oil pump failure that was because the part was plastic, not metal.

4 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/28/2026

This technical failure in the BMW b58tu engine (2019–2021) involves the variable-displacement oil pump's internal thermoplastic slide. In low ambient temperatures, the high viscosity of cold oil creates mechanical stress that causes this plastic component to fracture. ? the safety hazard ?the primary risk is a sudden loss of motive power. When the slide fails, oil pressure becomes unregulated or drops entirely, triggering an immediate "drivetrain malfunction" or engine shutdown. ? immobilization: vehicles may stall in active traffic or high-speed environments without sufficient warning. ?environmental risk: failures peak in extreme cold, leaving occupants stranded in freezing conditions while awaiting recovery. ? detection gap: the electronic oil level sensor often fails to complete a measurement ("measurement aborted") before a low-pressure warning appears, depriving drivers of a clear precursor to mechanical failure. ?critical technical challenges ? obfuscated parts history: BMW has superseded the original plastic-vane pump with a revised metal-vane version. However, the electronic parts catalog (etk) now lists the metal version as the "original" part for affected vins, making it impossible for owners to verify which version is physically installed without engine teardown. ? high repair barrier: correcting this defect requires extensive disassembly, often costing $6,000–$8,000. If the failure occurs at speed, total engine replacement is frequently required.

5 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/26/2026

Oil pump failures have been reported across multiple production years, and affected vehicle population boundaries remain unclear. Because this condition can result in sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning especially in the cold, I believe this issue warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect. Loss of lubrication can cause the vehicle to become disabled without warning while driving or shortly after startup. This creates a safety hazard, particularly when vehicles become immobilized in active traffic or during winter conditions the cold is when they fail the most, where occupants may be exposed to freezing temperatures while awaiting assistance.

6 Other Fuel System problem of the 2020 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/05/2026

Component failed: engine starter relay and starter motor assembly. The vehicle stalled in traffic and ignited upon a restart attempt. The vehicle is a total loss, currently held by [insurance CO] at [location/lot #], and is available for inspection. Safety risk: the driver’s life was at immediate risk. The vehicle stalled in active traffic, creating a collision hazard, followed by a rapid, uncontrollable engine fire. The driver suffered smoke inhalation and severe trauma while escaping. A delayed exit would have been fatal. Confirmed by dealer: the failure mirrors the defect pattern in recall 25v-636 (starter relay corrosion). While the fire prevents reproduction, the vehicle had a consistent service history with no prior electrical issues. Inspected the vehicle was inspected by [insurance CO] and declared a total loss. [optional: the fire dept. Responded under report #[number]]. BMW was formally notified via demand letter on [date]. Warning lamps/symptoms: no prior warnings. The failure was acute. A "drivetrain malfunction" message appeared seconds before the stall. Smoke and flames appeared immediately upon the attempted restart.

7 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/16/2026

On returning to my locked vehicle that had been in the parking ramp for 3 days, I started the car and the display message indicated that my vehicle was completely out of gas and the oil was very low. The vehicle had nearly a full tank of gas when it was parked. The vehicle was towed to the dealership who assessed the vehicle. The service department indicated that the vehicle likely did not sound like it was running because of the idle feature, and as such, I may have thought I shut off the car, but that eventually the idle feature turned off, and the vehicle ran while it was locked until it was out of gas. The service man who sent me a video of my vehicle and described what happened, also showed me another BMW SUV in the hoist next to my vehicle and indicated that same vehicle had the same thing happen as well. BMW replaced the programing/encoding control units software that was original to the vehicle. They indicated that this would improve overall function of the vehicle. The cost of this replacement was $371. This sounds like a design flaw. How can a locked vehicle start back up after a period of time, by itself with no vehicle fob in the vicinity, and run for hours until it is out of gas and the oil is low?.

8 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/30/2025

BMW knows there is a problem with the 2013 X3 timing chain. I have continuously had my BMW serviced at there shops. Never once when my car was in for service did they mention the issue or proactively check. My vehicle now has the issue per the dealership snd indicated it is approximately a 20k repair which they included a new engine. I also followed Bmws recommendation to have the oil changed 1year or when miles were hit per their change program. Just has the oil changed in November and at the end of December now timing chain issues. Again multiple times this issue could have been identified and proactively fixed while under warrenty. Also has issues where the material on the glove box peeled off. BMW is also aware of this issue. Poor design and quality on these models/engine. Thank goodness I was not on the expressway when drivabilty issuev occurred!!!.

9 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/29/2025

High pressure fuel pump stalling almost caused an accident yes the problem has been confirmed by BMW BMW has inspected the component check engine light and drivetrain errors BMW replaced a high pressure fuel pump and fuel system in 2019, see attachment. I was not notifies of the 2021 BMW recall for the high pressure fuel pump. The high pressure fuel pump fail in 2025, see attachment at around 60,000 on the replaced high pressure fuel pump in 2019, less than the original fuel pump. BMW now says they are not going to repair this because of the age and mileage on the car. My position is the mileage on the car is irrelevant. It’s the mileage on the fuel system replaced in 2019. In addition, I was not notified of the recall in 2021and now the question is “ is the high pressure fuel pump replaced in 2019 the same fuel pump replacement part that came with the car when new? obliviously the 2021 recall may have upgraded the fuel pump to satisfy the recall. If so, that should have been put into my car in 2021. BMW has been very deceiving on answering my questions.

10 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/24/2025

Our vehicle alerted us to over heating and to pull over immediately. Our car then stopped running. We had it towed and was told there was an issue with the water pump sensor and corrosion issues. They alerted us that there was a recall for these issues on our vehicle. We researched and found this to be true. When I contacted BMW they stated our VIN number was not part of the recall but our vehicle match the exact models listed in the recall. We took it to the dealership and they repaired it for $2500 and the reason for the repair was the exact reason for the recall. Spoke with BMW again regarding this and they said if our VIN was not on the recall list there was nothing they could do. I would think when your vehicle make and model matches the recall and the issues are the same you would be part of the recall no matter the VIN number. I would like for this to be reviewed and see if we can get a reimbursement from BMW for the charges we paid out of pocket for an issue that should have been covered by the recall. The recall form attached is one my friend received who has the exact same car we have. The other documents are the service invoice and verification of our payment. Thank you!.

11 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/31/2025

1. The primary failure occurred within the electrical system and engine compartment wiring. According to the official forensic report (ref xxx by the ministry of internal affairs of georgia, the fire originated in the engine compartment due to an electrotechnical fault (short circuit). 2. The vehicle spontaneously exploded and caught fire while parked in a closed, underground parking facility of a commercial building. This created an immediate risk mass casualties due to smoke inhalation and potential structural collapse of the parking ceiling. Fire spreading to dozens of adjacent vehicles. The explosion occurred without any prior warning, posing a lethal threat to anyone nearby. 3. The failure was officially confirmed and documented through a state forensic examination. The ministry of internal affairs’ forensic-criminalistic department conducted a comprehensive technical audit. They ruled out any external factors (arson/accelerants) and confirmed an internal electrical short circuit as the sole cause. 4. Yes. The vehicle was inspected and seized as evidence by the criminal police and the state forensic-criminalistic department of georgia. 5. There were no warning lights or messages displayed on the dashboard prior to parking the vehicle. The incident was a spontaneous combustion that occurred while the vehicle was stationary and unoccupied. Please note that uploaded police documents are in georgian language and I will be able to send over official translations upon request. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

12 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/09/2025

The low-pressure fuel temperature/pressure sensor failed internally, causing diesel fuel to intrude via capillary action into the engine wiring harness and ultimately contaminate the digital diesel electronics (dde) control unit (ecu). The failed components (sensor, harness, dde) are available for inspection upon request at BMW of loveland, CO. My safety was put at risk in two primary ways: engine stalling risk: the dde is the engine control unit. As the fuel contaminated the electrical connections, the engine's reliability was compromised, creating a significant risk of sudden engine stalling while driving in traffic or at high speeds. Fire hazard: the intrusion of diesel fuel—a combustible fluid—directly into the electrical wiring harness and the dde created a clear fire hazard. Fuel near active electrical components poses a serious safety risk. Inaccurate temperature readings: the egt (exhaust gas temperature) sensor received incorrect readings due to the dde/wiring issue, leading to potential engine damage due to excessively high exhaust temperatures. The problem has been confirmed by BMW of loveland. The service director and their technical team identified the root cause in less than one day and confirmed it requires the replacement of the sensor, harness, and dde. This was also validated by an internal BMW technical support case (tsara). Gebhardt BMW failed to diagnose the issue correctly over three prior attempts starting in June 2023 through Aug 2025. Prior symptoms appeared over a period of months and included: intermittent check engine light/mil. Multiple, confusing diagnostic fault codes (related to air mass, charging pressure, and dpf efficiency). Increased frequency of dpf regeneration intervals.

13 Other Fuel System problem of the 2025 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/26/2025

On may 26, 2025, after I arrived home and parked my 2025 BMW X3, the vehicle caught fire approximately 30 minutes later. The fire started due to a known recall issue (NHTSA recall no. 25v202) related to the electrical/starter-generator connection, which can cause overheating and fire. I contacted BMW multiple times before the incident — on April 19, may 9, and may 25 — requesting help to fix the open recall, but they failed to take action. The fire was sudden and violent, putting my life and property at risk. Firefighters and police responded; case number: 25/200048976. I filed a claim with progressive insurance and have photos and documentation available.

14 Other Fuel System problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/26/2025

On April 26, 2025, while driving my 2022 BMW X3, the vehicle suddenly emitted smoke and caught fire. Fortunately, all five passengers, including myself, were able to exit the car before it became fully engulfed in flames. The car was destroyed and is a total loss. The BMW app later displayed a “drivetrain malfunction” message, which did not appear until after the fire had already started. The vehicle was still under the manufacturer’s 48-month new vehicle warranty and had no open recalls at the time. Routine maintenance and service had been performed at authorized BMW dealerships. I am concerned this fire may have resulted from a manufacturing defect, especially in light of similar reports and recalls involving fuel rail cracks or leakage in this model/year. No injuries were sustained, but this was a terrifying and traumatic incident, and I am now left with significant financial loss. What I am requesting: I ask that NHTSA investigate whether this fire was caused by a manufacturing defect common to the 2022 BMW X3 and whether a broader recall or corrective action is warranted.

15 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/15/2025

The oil pump failed and needs to be replaced. Yes it is available for inspection. If the pump does not get replaced, the oil will not flow through the car like it's supposed to and the engine could seize up and stop working. My dealership confirmed that the oil pump has failed. Another service center mentioned that it's a common problem with certain Bmws because of the plastic component that they used. Because of the issues, BMW switched to metal but never issued a recall to fix those who still have the plastic component. The first error message I received said that the engine oil level is low and I need to add 2 qts of oil. When I tried to digitally measure the oil levels after oil was added, it wouldn't work. It would load to about 20% and then go back to the initial screen without taking a reading. I didn't realize that was a symptom at the time but the dealership confirmed it. I took it to the dealership within a day of receiving the error message.

16 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/01/2025

Vehicle was driving when it stalled while driving. The vehicle would not start after that. After having a mechanic look at the vehicle it was found the high pressure fuel pump failed causing extensive damage to the fuel system and a repair quote of $15,000. Even though vehicles manufacturered in the same model year had a recall for this issue my VIN number did not receive the recall. The recall number for the recall I'm referencing is 21v586000. BMW denies any recall for my vehicle and will not cover repairs.

17 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/23/2024

I was driving on the interstate [xxx] when the car (2015 X3 BMW xdrive28d) went into neutral out of nowhere and the car completely stopped and never came back on. I was just about to get off of the next exit and did not make it I was stuck in the middle of the interstate scared no one would pull over to help me it was dark when all of this was taking place cars were speeding and would come up on the car at the last minute to go around almost causing a accident once they realized the car wouldn’t start. When trying to see if the car would turn back on it wouldn’t things came up on the screen saying power train along with the check engine light and some smoke was coming from underneath the hood it was also saying battery not charging. I had to wait 2hrs for a tow truck to get the car back to my house and the police never came. On [xxx] I then had the car towed to BMW dealership (BMW of bloomfield) in new jersey where the vehicle is currently at they have told me it was a fuel pump issue. This has never happened to me before until the night of [xxx]. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

19 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/03/2024

I had a terrible BMW X3 (2013) engine timing chain failure leading to engine failure (known BMW X3 n20 engine time chain and engine coolant pump defect). The car is non drivable and had to be towed to BMW cleveland dealership and should be available for inspection. While driving on busy [xxx] , suddenly showed “low coolant” indicator and yellow engine light which turned red after sometime and the car stalled complelely on the road that caused huge safety risk for me the driver and incoming traffic. Had to call 911 to help manage incoming traffic and help with towing the car to the dealership. Dealership reported engine timing chain and pump failure and recommending replacing them along with total engine replacement at a cost of $21000. There is also an open recall for this car, which was not fixed by the dealership (NHTSA recall number 24v608: engine coolant pump) and I was told there is no remedy for this available. Due to the severe damage to car owing to faulty engine coolant pump and engine timing chain, I request NHTSA to order a recall and fix of all defective BMW 2013 X3 engines, coolant and fuel pumps by the manufacturer. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

20 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/01/2024

I received a recall notice from BMW in October 2024 for recall 24v-608 involving a water pump electrical connector defect in my vehicle. According to the notice, this defect may cause liquid to drip onto the water pump’s electrical connector, potentially leading to a short circuit and, in rare cases, a fire. As of June 2025, nearly eight months later, there is still no remedy available. I have contacted BMW, and although they acknowledge the risk, they have not offered a loaner vehicle or any alternative despite the known fire hazard. I am concerned for my safety and do not feel comfortable continuing to drive a vehicle with a known, unresolved safety defect. I am submitting this complaint because I believe this delay is unreasonable and puts drivers at risk. The vehicle is currently operational, but the issue has not been fixed or properly addressed.

21 Other Fuel System problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/22/2024

I'm reporting a safety issue with BMW vehicles equipped with the b58tu engine, primarily 2019-2021 models. Failures are reported across multiple production years, and the scope of affected vehicles remains unclear. Because this condition causes sudden vehicle disablement without adequate warning, especially in cold weather, I believe this warrants investigation as a potential safety-related defect.

22 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/15/2024

Fuel pump failed, leading to overheating notice, leading to engine cutting out while driving. I was on one lane road 50 mph speed limit and able to drift to side of road at around 10-15mph, but if I was on freeway and engine cut and had to get to side of road at 10-15mph it would have been extremely dangerous. Car towed to BMW dealership, replaced water pump, but since 2015 X3 35i not subject to recall , paid out of pocket.

23 Other Fuel System problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/13/2024

BMW has failed to issue a remedy for the coolant pump that may lead to fires, if not replaced. For months now, I have called several BMW dealerships and they do not have an idea of when BMW would issue a remedy. BMW needs a push from the NHTSA to address this recall instead of looking to the other side because the car's date is 2016. If they cannot fix that hazard, then they must replace vehicles.

24 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/16/2024

On two separate occasions, the BMW has completely shut down in the middle of the road while driving. An alert showing something along the lines of "drive train failure" was shown on the dash display, and I simply had no control over driving the car. Upon making it safely to the side of the road, the car would not start, only sputter, when the push button start was engaged. After the first incident, the car was towed to a shop where they stated it was the high pressure fuel pump that needed to be replaced and stated there was a recall for this exact issue; however my VIN is not in the recall. Somehow, the car started working again and seemed okay, until it happened a second time, in the middle of the road again. Took it to a new shop, and received the same information, same part, same recall suggestion, with my VIN still not falling into the recall. The recall is for my exact year, model, engine number, everything - just not my VIN. It does not make any sense. The recall that number that should be covering this is 21v-586.

25 Other Fuel System problem of the 2019 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

I am reporting repeated coolant system failures and overheating on my 2019 BMW X3 . I have had 4 coolant-related repairs in under 3 years, including the coolant reservoir boiling after service. Most recently, the problem recurred despite prior repairs. This is a certified pre-owned vehicle with warranty history, and I believe this is a systemic engine/cooling defect that poses a risk of engine failure or fire. Other owners may be affected. A recall or investigation is warranted.

26 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 BMW X3

Failure Date: 01/14/2024

On December 27, 2023, vehicle was taken to the service center of the dealership where it was purchased. The primary concern was that the car would at times suddenly launch forward and increase in speed on its own. Employees/repairmen test drove the vehicle, scanned the codes and the concern was not duplicated. On January 14, 2024, when slowing to park this vehicle, it suddenly raced forward, causing driver to hit a post. I have this documentation. Vehicle was totaled (at loss to me). I need some remedy.

27 Other Fuel System problem of the 2011 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/10/2023

The car started lurching and then the power went off. When turned back on and put in gear, the gas pedal did nothing. Then a few minutes later, it would kick back on. I finally got a letter from BMW about a recall. The symptoms matched. However, for the last 10 months, they offered no help. I understand there was no remedy until recently. However, we were out of a car since November 2023 and put $3,000 into engine work trying to fix the car, before the recall came. The recall said to report if the manufacturer failed to remedy the recall in a timely manner. I'd say 10 months is way over a timely manner. Thanks for your time.

28 Other Fuel System problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/10/2023

This is a very common malfunction happening with this motor/fuel injection system. N47t/n57t diesel fuel injectors: ltd wty extension to 10 years/120,000 miles. The vehicles listed have the same engine as mine, yet my specific model is not listed. Please can I have a letter explaining to the dealership that this is a faulty fuel injector and the warranty extension should cover my vehicle as well. Si b01 09 19 (DC 13 53 90 06 00).

29 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/16/2023

Fuel pump failure- 71,000 miles.

30 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 08/05/2023

Experienced a sudden fuel system failure at speeds above 50 mph. The car's engine shutdown without notice and would not restart. Being told by my shop requires the replacement of the fuel pump control module. After researching on the internet seems a common problem that is often misdiagnosed (even by BMW).

31 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 07/01/2023

Fuel pump control module stopped working causing the engine to stop. It would not restart. Also, the car would not shift out of park into neutral, thus it could not be moved. This happened on a highway in traffic and created a very dangerous situation. Apparently, this fuel pump control module has a history of failing in hot weather. In this particular case the vehicle had been operating in 100 degree weather for a few hours.

32 Other Fuel System problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/08/2023

1. The fuel pump and electronic relay have malfunctioned 3x while driving. 3rd fuel pump!!! 2. The car broke down in downtown atlanta, at night. The car stopped in parking lot at work at an event site, then ubered home. I had the car towed the next day. 3. The issue wasn't reproduced by the dealer, however it reproduced on its own 3 times. 4. The last repair, number three, the vehicle was kept by Bmwglobal atlanta for approximately 30 days. The pump system was dead, but they couldn't reproduce the issue with the new pump. They blamed it on the fuel I was using, which was always premium! 5. There were zero warning lamps in the car before the shutdowns. All three times the car the pumps died the car began stuttering right before it shut down.

33 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/22/2022

1. The fuel pump and electronic relay have malfunctioned 3x while driving. Causing me to replace the low pressure fuel pump . First fuel pump was at 30 k miles on 10/8/2021 2. This is the second fuel pump! 10/13/2022 the car broke down on the highway near columbus GA . The car stopped at a traffic light and limped into a parking lot. I waited 4 hrs for a flatbed, got a hotel for the night and a rental in the am. The car stopped running 2x on the highway both times in rural georgia, miles away from a BMW dealership. I was able to limp the car off the highway. Once it died in downtown atlanta. All three times the vehicle needed to be flatbedded to a BMW dealer. Twice I needed hotels and rental cars the next day to finish work. And both times needed to go back to rural GA to pickup the cars. 3. The issue wasn't reproduced by the dealer, however it reproduced on its own 3 times. 4. The last repair, number three, the vehicle was kept by Bmwglobal atlanta for approximately 30 days.
