Tl the contact owns a 2013 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a vacuum pump failure. The mechanic linked the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 14v627000 (service brakes, hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included. BMW of warwick (1515 bald hill rd, warwick, ri 02886, (401) 298-9457) and the manufacturer were contacted and confirmed that the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

While driving along secondary roadway , with no other cars within sight or obstructions within view, automatic braking of the vehicle occurred. Braking action was severe enough to cause driver to be propelled against the seat belt shoulder strap. Brakes released within approximately one second after application. Took vehicle to dealer next day after episode to diagnose problem. Service technician found, " no faults " stated, " operation of automatic braking on occasion is normal operation due to the sensitivity of the feature". It was indicated to me that the service technician contacted BMW na and was given this explanation. When asked if there was a , "fix I n the work's " to resolve this issue , BMW na replied they considered this operation normal for all of their vehicles with this braking system. I find this answer unacceptable. Inadvertent brake application by the vehicle when there is no vehicles or obstructions in close proximity is a safety hazard. Drivers run the risk of being rear ended by those drivers following to closely especially when the following driver has an expectation that there is no traffic situation that would necessitate the car in front to apply their brakes. Automatic braking systems should be deactivated until BMW na can resolve this problem.

Was driving in the city about 40mph, and automatic braking system engaged but there was no hazard. No car near by in front, back, or both sides. This happened 2/26/20 around 10am pt took car to dealership. They claimed the car was dirty on windshield and is the only possible reason. Claimed they were not able to recreate the issue.
While driving home January 11, 2020 at approximately 8:30 pm on a main street thankfully in very little traffic, while proceeding to travel through a traffic controlled intersection at approximately 50 mph the automatic emergency braking system activated. This is the third time that this has happened to me and if it had been a day/night with normal heavy traffic, the possibility of a rear end collision would have been great. Previously as well as during this occurrence, the driver is forcefully pitched forward but the simultaneous high pitched sound did not occur and I did not notice an icon flashing on the dash as before. This occurrence did seem to be of longer duration than the previous incident. These happened on 1/11/2020 with the two previous incidents on 12/02/19 an 12/11/19 respectively.
I purchased a vehicle in good faith from BMW on 12/23/2019 what I thought would be a great christmas present, for myself. Little did I know I was buying a road hazard. In less than two months a tire light came on, I took the vehicle a guy a the service desk reset the light it never went off I then took the vehicle again to have it looked at and I was told it was a $4600 repair. I was totally taken aback. I advised the dealership that I would not pay for a problem that was clearly there when I purchased the vehicle. I told BMW I would not pay for the repair of $4600, considering it appeared to be an underline problem that was not disclosed when I purchased the vehicle.

I was parking when I totally lost control of my car. I could not steer it and I could not break. I went left while I was attempting to brake but I had no brakes. I attempted to go straight and hit one parked car. Then I went right and damaged another car then the car hit a 3 car. Then the car stopped. I receive a BMW assist message regarding having an accident then the screen went dead. I was parking my car. Few weeks before I received the following message: chassis stabilization problems. You can continue driving but take your car to the dealer ( something like that). I stopped the car and the message went away. Never came back. So I was planning to talk about it to the dealer when going for the next appointment. I was parking in a place I know very well, hispital parking.

While driving on a busy city street in moving traffic the automatic emergency braking system activated without cause. The vehicle was travelling at approximately 50 mph without another vehicle or obstacle near the vehicle. This caused the vehicle to suddenly pitch forward, throwing the driver forward with the forceful more while simultaneously making a high pitched screeching sound and flashing a dashboard icon. This has happened on two separate occasions, 12/02/19 and again on 12/11/19.
It was in the morning on 11/8/2019, I had pulled into a parking lot (located in highway 85 & camden Ave, san jose, CA) traveling very slowly then turned right into a parking space with my foot on brake but just before coming to a complete stop the car suddenly surged forward at great speed, leapt over a concrete curb designed to stop a vehicle and crashed into the cross-link fence 6 feet in front of the car. The whole incident was over in 2 - 3 seconds. Thankfully there weren't cars coming on the highway next to the fence. I was terrified about what just happened. Very scary. I found other drivers complaining the same online. This is a major safety hazard putting my life and others at risk. It is not safe to drive my car. I called BMW of north America at 800-831-1117 and reported this incident.

The error "chassis stabilization" popped up with multiple lights on the instrument gauge cluster. Steering, acceleration, and braking were effected. After backing out of driveway, made a sharp right turn and warnings appeared. They also happen intermittently during driving, most often in the first 2 minutes of driving.

Automatic braking spontaneously activated without cause. Happened 2 times. Most recent incident caused injuries to the driver and almost caused a severe accident. This is a full stop from approximately 40 mph.
Twice on rainy days, when stopping on a hill at a traffic light, the brakes would not hold. Luckily the light changed and I did not hit the car in front of me. I brought it in with once, but nothing was "wrong". I am going to try again this week. I am afraid to drive the car in the rain.

The steering angle sensor has faulted, at around 60,000 miles. This fault results in possible airbag failure, in conjunction with inability to perform safety breaking mechanisms, as well as disabling the cars 4x4 stability control features. BMW as well as other BMW third-party mechanics have told me this is a reoccurring problem and could pose a serious danger if in an accident. BMW officially told me to put a complaint in so that a recall could be performed. I will not pay 2000 for my airbags to work, as it is a feature required by law to operate properly. I will upload all necessary documentation if needed, should this complaint be taken into consideration.

Automatic emergency braking system activated without cause. There was no vehicle or other object in front of my vehicle nevertheless the brakes were automatically employed suddenly slowing the car. Speed at time of the event was approximately 50-60 mph. There was a warning signal and dashboard icon for the aeb system.
As I drive and stop, my brakes stick, when I try to accelerate it struggles to go. On the highway it began slowing me down. I was scared it was going to get me rear ended because my brake lights do not come on when this happens. I brought it to my garage and they diagnosed it to be the dsc pump. They put in a used pump and fixed the issue. Please take this seriously, it is a dangerous problem.

Traveling east bound through an alley in order to make a right turn onto a south-north running city street. Brake was first applied approximately two-car length (distance wise) before the intersection. I noticed the vehicle was acting funny: instead of slowly coming to a stop, it picked up speed. I felt as if something was disengaged and the car was flying off without gravity. I hit the brake again as the car was dashing into the intersection. The vehicle was again accelerated on its own, completely out of control. At that moment a trash truck was traveling south bound. Both the driver and the passenger in the trash truck were looking at me in disbelief (that my vehicle was dashing out into the main road). We were eyeballed at each other, approximately at an 45 degree angle, for several seconds, before the two cars were collided. The outcome could have been fetal if the time and angles of the collision were off by a split of second. My vehicle was totaled though.
My car was stationary or in very slow motion and then suddenly went into a very high speed on my driveway ramp on its own. The brakes would not work till I went into someone's lawn and as it skid on the grass it gradually stopped. I almost had a near fatal accident. I have a witness who was taking a walk and saw the car suddenly fly at a very high speed and was beyond control.
We have a BMW X3. We pressed the brakes to stop at a traffic light, but it did not stop and kept going. The dealer could not replicate the problem. Again, when we were backing the car, it jumped backward even if my foot was on the brake pedal. We searched on the internet for BMW X3 problems, and many people had the same problems and some of them got into accidents. It is scary to drive the car, but the BMW dealers have not done anything for anybody who had the similar problem.
Vehicle intermittently lost power in motion on a highway causing the speed to drop at times from 55 to 45 until slowing down to a stop and intermittently caused random alerts to come on such as "door open" when driving when door was locked/not opened or powertrain alert or chassis stabilizer alert. This happened prior to hid installs but occurred more frequently with hid installment. Dealership discovered the accelerator pedal module was faulty. Very unsafe. Apparently the extra voltage from the lights was the reason for the increased duration for this faulty issue. Multiple reports of this on forums. Car is only at 46k.
Tl the contact owns a 2017 BMW X3. While driving various speeds, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. Instead, the vehicle lurched/ accelerated forward. The failure occurred six times. The contact placed both feet on the brake pedal and shifted the gear into neutral to stop the vehicle. In addition, the tachometer revved to high. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to BMW of akron (500 w exchange st, akron, OH 44302, (330) 752-2224), but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 9,000.
Driving on 3 lane road traveling approx 20-30 miles per hr cars ahead of me stopped and I applied the breaks and nothing happened, car kept going and I hit the car in front of me. Seemed like the car didn't even slow down.
The brakes are less or not responsive in city drive. I notified 3 times to dealer but they said no problem with the brakes. It must be something wrong in electronics. Alot of other owners of 2013 BMW X3 have same complaint. It is very risky. It happened 3 out of 4 times whike driving in 35 mph limits. Though the brakes feel good at high speed or highway limits.
The contact owns a 2018 BMW X3. The contact stated while driving at 65-70 mph, the vehicle became unstable. The contact stated that several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact reduced the vehicle speed and regained control of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to wide world of cars BMW located at (125 NY-59, spring valley, NY 10977) to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to tire treadwear. The tires were not replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 14,000.
The vehicle was a 2016 BMW X3. My sister bought it used at approximately 30,000 miles a few months ago. It was me, my mom, and my 1 nephew and 2 nieces. We decided to use it to take it on a trip to tybee island. But, my sister didn't come with us. While on islands expressway approaching the intersection at bryan woods rd south to tybee island, my mom pressed the brakes and it made a scrubbing sound. It didn't accelerate, though. It stopped after. We both just dusted it off our shoulders and continued to tybee island. We then went back to the house. On the same day, in decatur, GA we were heading out onto flat shoals pkwy at around 9:00 pm. Mom was at the stop sign. Suddenly, the truck raised to approximately 4000 rpm and surged into traffic a bit. My mom was scared she pressed in more on the brakes and the truck did a burn out. We could've got hurt bad. As a car was driving past us and the car was surging, our vehicle was almost hit! it accelerated for about 5 seconds and stopped. My mom was very anxious and refused to drive that truck again. We had to get my brother to pick us up. She was scared, and that bothered the kids. My sister also had an experience like this and she just thought it was her mind. After we got off of vacation in atlanta, my sister took it to the dealership. The dealership said they looked through it and said nothing else after that (my sister's words) my mom is angered. I hope BMW does a recall on this from all the cases that have occurred and all the damage that has happened. I will put this case under my mother's name.

Causing the car to jump forward. By putting car in neutral and depressing the brake on a grade, when I had completed, I noticed the the rpm gage was at 4000 rpm with brake on. The vehicle was stationary at the time. Three times it has happened as I slowed down and it lurched forward striking obsticalls. When braking it possible to engage the gas pedal.
It was in the morning and I was driving out of my townhouse neighborhood. I wasn't driving fast maybe 10-15 when I approached the the stop sign. I started to slow down but my car wasn't slowing down so I pressed the brakes as hard as I could. The car revved up and accelerated with force out into the cross street. Thankfully there wasn't a car coming or I would of been in an accident. I continued to drive a few miles very slowly. I was all shook up and confused as to what just happened. I called BMW to tell them and make a appointment to bring the car in. I stopped in a parking lot and parked wasn't thinking I parked across from a car. I decided to try just pressing on the brakes in the parking spot. I put the car in drive with my foot on the brakes and started to press harder the car revved up high as if I was pressing the accelerator in park. . But I wasn't it was in drive and I was only pressing the brakes. Then suddenly it started jerking forward. I almost hit the car in front of me I had to put it in park to stop it. I moved to a different parking spot there was a huge mound of snow my bumper was right up close to it. I tried it again and it did the same thing but the snow stopped me. BMW has not been able to reciprocate the problem as of now. I found online similar almost exact incidents of this on other X3 all different years. Some of them had been in accidents. I haven't picked up my car yet I am waiting still to see if they were able to duplicate it. I am not sure why with all the incidents I found of this that there hasn't been some sort of recall. I am hoping they will find out what caused this and fix it so I can feel safe driving my car on the road. So far it doesn't seem likely. I am not sure what to do if they don't find the problem and can't fix it. I feel like it would take someone to die for this to be investigated.
Last week when in city traffic, I depressed the brake to slow down, then lifted my foot off the brake. My car lurched forward and I immediately braked again to slow down and stop. This was not normal, had not happened before, and I decided to mention it during my next visit to BMW service. Last Saturday, Feb. 17, I was driving 20 -25 mph in a neighborhood, approaching a red light on river rd, bethesda. There was one car at the light. I braked to slow down, and realized that the car was not slowing down, braked again and it lurched forward and accelerated. I saw the speed the speedometer moving between 20-25, and the tachometer varying wildly between 1. 5 - 2. 5. I pressed very hard on the brake, which was harder to press down than ever before, pressed the park button and finally got the car to go into park before I arrived at the stopped vehicle in front of me. This all happened in less than 10 seconds. I immediately called BMW and took my car in, explaining what happened, still very shaken and afraid to drive the car. Afterwards, I looked on the internet, and read about other 2013 X3 drivers with the same experience. It did not appear that BMW was able to replicate the problem or that they repaired the cars to fix the problem. One person did have an accident and totaled the car. Thus far, BMW has told me they cannot replicate the problem. I requested the service manager to get involved and will ask to speak to the factory rep as well. This is a major safety hazard putting my life and others at risk. It is not safe to drive my car. I would like to know how many similar complaints have been filed with NHTSA and what NHTSA has done to address this serious safety flaw.
The car is having a triad of lights with no problem found. Keep getting 4x4, abs, brake, and now my passenger seat airbag warning lights. And researching online I found that smiliar year models were recalled for the airbag sensor.

Message on dash: park brake malfunction.
2016 BMW X3 xdrive28 I I pulled into a friend's driveway and applied the brakes approximately 2 feet from the closed garage door. My car "leapt " into the side of the house, then careened into the garage door. The car accelerated with such force that both airbags were deployed. I am sure that I did not hit the accelerator by accident. At the close proximity to the garage I could not have accelerated to cause such a violent crash that deployed the airbags. My car was declared a " total loss ". This was one of the more frightening experiences of my life. It all happened in a split second. I am thankful that I was not in traffic.
August 19, 2017 I pulled into my driveway at a very low speed and applied the brakes to park. The car aggressively accelerated even though my foot was on the brake. The car went through my neighbors fences and it finally stopped between two garages behind my property on the next street. I could not open the doors or windows for a minute or two. I do not feel safe driving this car again.
I had pulled into a parking lot traveling very slowly then turned left into a parking space with my foot on brake but just before coming to a complete stop the car suddenly surged forward at great speed, leapt over a concrete "log" designed to stop a vehicle and crashed into a concrete wall 3 feet in front of the car. My first reaction was to lift my foot from the pedal thinking I had depressed the accelerator in error, however the car increased speed and I just had time to glance down and ascertain that my foot was on the brake before the car plowed into the wall, deploying the air bags. The whole incident was over in 2 - 3 seconds and the car was perfectly aligned in the parking space except for the front wheels being the wrong side of "log". The X3 was not drive-able and was towed on a flatbed to the BMW service center and subsequently declared a complete write-off by the insurance company. I am horrified by the fact that many car manufacturers are aware of this sudden unintended acceleration problem yet, because it is difficult to prove, usually put all reported incidents down to operator error, therefore absolving them of responsibility. My insurance company is not investigating the cause, neither is BMW. Why is that? is it going to take a fatality before something is done to rectify this very real problem. Below is the contact details for the chubb claims examiner who is willing to share his report and photos should NHTSA decide to investigate. Sam jackson 800 432 2482 ext 0860 sam. Jackson@chubb. When starting the car, the brake pedal does not depress a short distance before resistance as it did previously. Now, I have to push very hard to get it to depress any distance so that I can start the car. This usually does not occur when the ambient temperature is below 50 degrees or the car has been operated very recently.
2013 BMW X3. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle brake repairs not covered under extended warranty.
I was stopping my car at a red signal behind another vehicle. I applied breaks and vehicle reached to complete stop. Immediately, engine picked up and started moving forward even though breaks are completely pressed. I had to do something to stop the car rear ending. So, I released and re-applied breaks. Vehicle reached complete stop and again started accelerating forward. I repeated the process but the third time it hit the car infront of me. The car is equipped with : auto start/stop engine (which stops the engine when the car is at complete rest). Auto hold (which allows the driver to take the foot off of the break) both the functionality are turned on when the incident happened, but I didnt take off my foot from the break pedal. Also, ac was running. I found another driver complaining the same online. . Read more...
