BMW X5 owners have reported 26 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW X5 based on all problems reported for the X5.
The automatic emergency braking is activating when nothing is on the road. It has happened three times in six months. Once in a drive thru, once in the middle of a clear intersection while moving at 30pmh and today while traveling at 35mph on a city street. The car acts as if it's attempting to prevent a forward collision. The red car icon displays and blinks on the instrument panel, fast beeps sound, the car hard brakes. It nearly caused the car behind me to rear end me today.

The integrated brake system and dynamic safety control both malfunctioned, not turning on. The car is totaled, so I don't think anything is available for inspection. There was water on the highway, and the car ended up going off the road into the grass and rolled over a few times before landing at the bottom of the ditch 100ft away. The car was not inspected because I was not aware of the major recall until I started looking into it. There was a snapshot of the dtc codes two weeks before the incident and there were codes specifically for the ib system as noted in the recall. There may have been one or two times throughout driving the car beforehand that a error light popped up, but then it disappeared almost immediately after.

I have recently experienced sudden phantom braking on my vehicle on three separate occasions, following a recall on a brake module that was taken care of at the dealer. Each time this happened at highway speed for no apparent reason. The dealer, BMW of buffalo has had the car for over a week without finding the problem. They have been in constant touch with corporate, trying to diagnose this. No luck! I will not drive this vehicle, nor can I in good conscie nce trade it in to another dealer. I could be held liable. I'm wondering what you may have on record since there are reports on the web of similiar occurances.
On July 23, 2025, at around 10:50 am, shortly after leaving my community and driving onto a main road, my BMW X5 suddenly experienced what felt like an emergency braking event and completely lost power. I was driving at approximately 40 mph when this happened. It caused surrounding vehicles to honk and make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision, creating a dangerous situation. I was extremely frightened and shocked, and for a moment I panicked because there were cars all around me. With the help of a friend and my family, I contacted BMW roadside assistance. It took nearly five hours before my vehicle was finally towed about nine miles away to the irvine BMW dealership for service. This incident has caused me extreme emotional distress, sleeplessness, and serious concerns about the safety and quality of the vehicle. I am seeking help and an official investigation into this issue.
I received a recall notice for integrated brake failure on February 2024, but the manufacturer has still not provided a remedy or parts as of July 4th 2025. I contacted the dealer and was told there is no eta for the repair. I believe this delay is unreasonable, and I am concerned about the safety implications of continuing to drive the vehicle.
Multiple issues with the software. 1. Since yesterday, [xxx] car failed to start with the message "software upgrade failed". Sitting like a brick now - engine doesn't start and can't get the car off parking mode. 2, last week, the remote functions of the software as well as emergency call system stopped working. Called the local dealer BMW of north canton on June 25, ohio to check and fix and they scheduled it for Monday June 30. But car refused to start per point 1. 1. Couple of times got the message while driving that driver inability to drive detected and suddenly slowing down the car and veering it to a side. Transient actions. Took it to the dealership, supposedly a software bug was fixed but then the message flashed one more time recently. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
I was making a left turn in stopped traffic. Lanes 1 and 2 yielded die to bumper to bumper traffic. . . As I crossed into lane 3 at 5 to 10 mph. . . Struck by a vehicle going 55 mph plus in opposite direction. My vehicle spun into 3rd vehicle. I hit my head 2 times on driver windows. No airbags deployed. I suffered a traumatic brain injury.

A car from the other side made an illegal left turn in front of me, and I braked very early, yet still slid into them. The car had been inspected at the time at the collision center, and had dtc codes from before repair and after repair, showing the integrated brake systems had failures before and after. There was no mention of the results of the inspection until I asked after another braking incident occurred two weeks later. There were moments where a light would pop up for a second, then disappear. It may have happened only once.
Driving home on a two lane road that is joined by a side road at a 45degree angle. A woman ran the stop sign and suddenly appeared on my road right in front about 40-50 feet away. The BMW did not show any visual or audible warning and the forward collision mitigation system functioned in a substandard way not mitigating the crash into the woman’s drivers door. Damages amounted to 25. 8k to my vehicle and took 48 days to repair at my local BMW dealer in albany NY. BMW states to me that the system worked properly. If that was the case how come I had massive front end damage impacting about 30 mph. The BMW manual shows a frontal cross traffic intrusion and leads one to believe in the system. It is substandard and needs revision by BMW engineering.
This is a known recall and no remedy has been made available by BMW. This puts me and anyone riding with me at risk of injury or death.
The contact owns a 2015 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the automatic emergency braking system failed to engage as needed while there were other vehicles nearby. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer to be diagnosed. Additionally, the manufacturer was contacted, and the contact was provided a 2025 BMW X5 loaner vehicle; however, the contact stated that the same failure occurred while driving the loaner vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact to return the loaner vehicle to the dealer. The contact stated that upon returning the loaner vehicle to the dealer, the dealer informed the contact that the failure of his vehicle could not be duplicated. The contact stated that while driving the vehicle at various speeds, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was test-driven while the dealer's manager was occupying the front passenger's seat. The dealer confirmed that the automatic emergency braking system was inoperable; however, the dealer informed the contact that they did not know how to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they would contact the dealer to obtain information on the service that was performed on the vehicle. A case was opened; however, the contact was still awaiting a response from both the dealer and the manufacturer. The failure mileage was approximately 56,000.
In February,2024[12th]. BMW filed a recall notice about a defective part in the braking systems of 2023,2024 models 5series, 7 series, x1,x5,x6,x7 and xm. My vehicle was made in mid March and delivered early April. Supposedly according to my source , BMW received replacement parts from the vendor and production continued. I’m not sure if it ever stopped. The problem is BMW never tested these new parts to see if they fixed the problem. This is clearly negligence on their part. The degree the lawyers can determine. Now around august12, BMW issued a stop sale on all these cars including some 2025 models. Only because I read a user blog on line about this and checked my VIN was I aware it affected my car. No notice from BMW. This was not a don’t drive notice. The effect on owners is they can’t trade or sell their cars. There does not seem to be a requirement that BMW file a stop sale order with NHTSA. I don’t believe they filed a subsequent notice to the February filing. Every day there are recall notices. Most are narrow in scope but this will involve umpteen thousands of cars. There is no end date because they don’t know when a new part will be available. Once available it could be many months before owners are able to have the problem part replaced. It takes 2+ hours a car. The dealers are already overwhelmed because of limited space and mechanics. If these companies don’t get fined for this type of behavior, it will not stop. I am talking millions in fines. The faa does it. More people drive than fly yet it seems the federal transportation department does not have or doesn’t want to exercise this option. Just look at what has been going on for over 15 years with takata airbags which could be fatal if opened. Just today 577,000 cars from Ford and Mazda were issued a do not drive notice on the news. Granted they were for older models but people who need transportation will still drive. Why hasn’t the government over the past 15+ years stopped the buying of them.
The car safety features should not allow the vehicle to move with an open door. It should also alert driver with warning if passenger door is ajar before and when in motion. The car did not register at any point (sound, dash light or otherwise) while the car door was moving that the rear driver side passenger door was ajar and door hit something. Even after collision, the vehicle still did not send any collision notice, signal driver door was open or stop automatically at any point.

While driving on a highway, several lights illuminated on my dashboard instrument cluster, including the abs light, a red brake light, a yellow park light, and the dynamic stability control light. The message center reported to "drive carefully" however none of this appeared urgent. I decided I should maybe test my breaks as I was curious what the problem was. I then proceeded to gently tap my brakes to see what all of this meant, and to my horror, my brake pedal went completely to the ground with no brakes initiated. Thankfully, I was able to move over onto the shoulder and coast to a stop and place my car in park. The emergency brake would not initiate. This could have ended terribly awful.
We were driving at about 45 miles per hour (not using adaptive cruise control) and the emergency braking system suddenly kicked in, slamming on the brakes even though there was nobody in front of us slowing down and there was no hazard. It created a dangerous situation as the car in back of us could have rear-ended us.

The integrated brake system is not working properly. Received a recall notice in April 2024 and it is now 3 months later and it is still not fixed. Visited the BMW dealership and discussed the matter with them and they offered no information as to when it would be fixed. We just have to wait until they notify us. BMW stated that they will only fix it if the dashboard warning came on and they will look into fixing the problem. Why do I have to wait for the problem to become an issue before they address it. I think by then it might be too late. We asked for a loaner since they can't get it fixed in a timely manner and I was told, "just to drive the car". This is an accident waiting to happen. So, I am asking the NHTSA to assist in correcting this issue. I know I can't be the only one in this situation.
This recall was issued Feb. 21 2024, to this date BMW has not fixed the problem. Called them, and they were unwilling to commit to anything. All they said was to wait for the fix. As it stands, the vehicle is unsafe to drive, it cannot be sold or traded. I would either like them to conduct a buyback or fix the problem.
I purchased this vehicle under my company to rent and make some extra income for my family. We also had a baby in August of 2024 so wanted a larger vehicle for the family. We purchased the vehicle on Feb 20,2024 and the recall was issued on Feb 14,2024. We were sold a lemon. I went to the dealership and told them they said they will have a solution in a year. Still no solution and I still cannot rent my vehicle because it has an open recall. Me and my family do not feel safe in this vehicle. Please can someone help. I am willing to return the car or even exchange for a vehicle that doesn’t have a recall as soon as I drive off the lot. Thank you.
There is a recall on the car’s braking system that can malfunction at any moments. The issue was discovered back in Feb 2024 10 mos ago & no solution it’s a huge risk as per BMW to me my family & anyone on the road. 10 months and no solution is unacceptable it’s dangerous.
On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, shortly after 8:30 p. M. , I turned into the driveway for my columbia residence and proceeded with caution toward my carport. The weather was clear, with no rain or ice, and my driveway was free of all obstacles. My 2021 BMW X5 began to accelerate and move forward at a dangerous speed. Though I applied the brakes, they were unresponsive, and the vehicle collided, with force, into the brick steps at the carport entrance to my home. Upon impact, all airbags in the vehicle deployed, and the emergency response system was activated. Prior to impact, none of the vehicle’s safety monitoring features responded. These would include the system by which the vehicle’s speed is regulated whenever a vehicle on the roadway, in front of the X5, slows down or brakes. Neither did the warning system activate – the system that monitors the presence of obstacles in front of or behind the X5. The 2021 BMW X5 sustained significant front-end damage in the collision, and my residence was also damaged by the vehicle. I deny that the incident was operator error and believe it to have been the result of a vehicle or computer malfunction. Interestingly enough, the X5 had been serviced by BMW of columbia on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. That routine service included a brake flush.

Today, we experienced a some kind of sudden stop in a normal speed driving. Red alert car symbol flashed on our dashboard. It is without stepping on a break but it’s like our car is braking or like abrupt stopping. No car or any object that may hinder in front of us. It was scary coz there’s car behind us in a good speed. I don’t feel like it’s safe for what we had experienced today. Please try to look at it before anything like this scenario to happen again. I am and anyone else is into safety that’s why we choose this vehicle.
I was trying to park my car on March 11, 2023 at noon, and I noticed a sudden uncontrolled acceleration even when my foot was off the accelerator pedal. Parking collision front sensors failed to provide an early warning, and automatic emergency brake did not engage leading to a minor collision with the vehicle parked in front. The situation occurred so rapidly that I did not have enough time to react quickly and apply brakes. I managed to apply brakes to avoid a serious incident, but it was not quick enough to even avoid this minor collision. I have reported this to BMW USA, however the car has not been inspected by a dealer or an independent service center after the incident. There were no warnings displayed prior to this incident, however I have had consistent issues pertaining to the operation of front sensors. I had BMW certified dealer inspect front sensors, and according to them the sensors do not provide an early warning as per the design but they have adjusted the sensitivity. The adjustment did not improve the situation, and I provided that feedback to the service center as well. The sensors did fail at twice prior to this incident, and the dealer inspected that as part of sensor sensitivity adjustment. I drove this vehicle to the BMW certified dealer more than twice to have the front sensors and other things inspected prior to this incident. Nevertheless, this uncontrolled acceleration is something that I have never experienced before, and I am traumatized to even drive this vehicle comfortably. All the automated systems designed to prevent or avoid collision did not engage leading me to not trust anything.
My daughter was driving a vehicle and she was moving to another lane in the process. Car is capable and feature with automatic emergency breaking for front collision. During entire process she didn’t take action for some reason and car collided with another vehicle. Emergency brake didn't full stop vehicle. 10s of video recording was done during the collision.
I purchased a 2022 BMW X5 on Aug 29th as a birthday gift to myself and never imagined that less than three months later, I would have a near mishap that could have ended my life and others nearby. On Nov 26th, as I was driving my vehicle, I received a notification not to proceed driving and to pull over because the system noticed a brake system malfunction. At that moment, I proceeded with caution to a safe location and the breaks begin to resist below my feet. I immediately called roadside assistance to send a tow truck. Afterward, I phoned BMW honolulu to make them aware of my situation and asked for a loaner vehicle and was told I would not be able to get one. However, after stressing how important I needed one, I was given a BMW 340i series below the standards of my purchase. I was briefed that my brake booster needed to be replaced. Receiving this information caused me to lose confidence in the vehicle and the company's ability to provide me with a safe and secure product. To add, I was mentally affected given the critical severity this issue could have caused me, my family, and others. I scheduled a meeting with sales manager wallace MA at bavarian motoren works honolulu on Thursday, Dec 1st to make him aware of my intentions to involve the corporate office so I could give him an opportunity to make things right within the scope of his position. During our meeting, I stressed how important it was that I am given a new vehicle mimicking the same features while duplicating my initial agreement. On Dec 2nd mr. Ma contacted me via phone to let me know he'll move forward with handling the issue locally in the dealership to avoid long delays and processes with corporate. On Dec 3rd, we agreed on the 2023 BMW X5 that mimicked my initial vehicle. However, once again, BMW failed and the new vehicle did not have all the same features. On Dec 21st, I contacted corporate and spoke with destiny who informed me that corporate could not do anything.
Unintended acceleration with loss of braking effectiveness. We hit a tree head on going at least 50 by the time we struck it. The vehicle was inspected before we bought it and we only bought it 3 days before the accident occurred. The check engine light came on that afternoon and we were going to get it checked out on Monday.

Automatic braking system. Traveling about 50 mph the automatic brake activated, there was nothing even close to my vehicle, my passenger's head was jerked forward. I had the vehicle in for computer problems about two weeks ago, concerning the radio and dash board displays, not knowing about the automatic braking problem at that time, ( this is the second incident involving the automatic brake, first time I didn't think too much about it since I had just purchased the vehicle I thought maybe a new car bug ). I was told that there was no fix for the problems I took it in for , and that germany was notified and they had no solution, when a fix was found I would be notified. Now I'm now realizing more is affected by the faulty computer system then I first thought. My main concern is getting rear ended on the highway which I travel quite often. This incident occurred Saturday evening, today I'm contacting the dealership, we will see what happens with a more serious problem.
