BMW X5 owners have reported 13 problems related to warnings (under the back over prevention category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW X5 based on all problems reported for the X5.
Vehicle: 2026 BMW X5 system involved: parking assistant professional (automatic parking) description of the incident: while using parking assistant professional on my 2026 BMW X5, the vehicle performed an automated parking maneuver and reversed into a stationary wall, causing damage to the rear window, tail light, and paint. The maneuver was initiated by the automated parking system. During the event, there were no audible or visual warnings, no alert prompts, and no system disengagement prior to impact. The vehicle continued reversing until contact occurred. I did not manually apply throttle or steering input during the automated maneuver. The obstacle was a fixed, stationary wall in a normal parking environment. BMW north America later informed me that their investigation concluded the system operated as designed and that certain sensor limitations are described in the owner’s manual. However, from a safety perspective, an automated parking system reversing into a stationary object without warning raises concern, particularly given the absence of alerts or system intervention. I am submitting this complaint to document a potential safety issue involving automated parking behavior and lack of warnings during low-speed automated maneuvers.
While attempting to park forward into a handicapped parking space, the car lurched forward approximately 4 feet instead of braking/stopping. The braking system appeared to fail and the electrical/sensors/adas warnings did not engage. The vehicle drove over a cement parking block and struck a building shrub, signage and hvac unit.

Because of this water intrusion, the following safety systems have malfunctioned or failed: • abs and dsc (stability control) warnings • chassis stabilization warning • frontal collision and pedestrian warning malfunction • airbag system warning • loss of audible warning tones • most bus communication failure • electrical modules intermittently shutting down or throwing codes these failures affect braking, stability control, crash avoidance, and driver alerts, creating a significant safety risk while driving. This is not normal wear or maintenance. Many BMW owners have reported the same issue: clogged or poorly designed sunroof drains that route water directly into areas containing critical electronics. Once water reaches these modules, it causes electrical shorts and safety system failures that require expensive repairs. BMW dealerships typically diagnose this as “water damage,” but the location of the drains and the placement of the electronics indicate a design flaw that allows a simple drain issue to disable major safety systems. I am filing this complaint because the water intrusion should not be able to cause total failure of abs, dsc, collision warning, and airbag-related systems. This is a safety-related design defect, not wear and tear. I request NHTSA review and investigate BMW sunroof drain failures and their impact on essential vehicle safety functions.

The car safety features should not allow the vehicle to move with an open door. It should also alert driver with warning if passenger door is ajar before and when in motion. The car did not register at any point (sound, dash light or otherwise) while the car door was moving that the rear driver side passenger door was ajar and door hit something. Even after collision, the vehicle still did not send any collision notice, signal driver door was open or stop automatically at any point.

My backup camera is so dim at night I cannot see many obstacles. The dealer adjusted the camera to maximum brightness, but it's still so dim that I cannot see pedestrians wearing dark clothing and other obstacles behind me. Only the acoustic warning has prevented me from hitting an object or running into a person. I have talked to many other owners of this year BMW X5, and all of them have a similar complaint. The dealer adjusted the camera to its maximum night-time brightness but to no avail. The dealer then told me BMW designed the camera to be hard to see at night. I have normal night vision, as confirmed at my yearly vision exam by a licensed ophthalmologist, so I find it dubious that BMW would make their backup camera too dark to use at night. I found that shinning a bright light at the lower-left area of the instrument binacle causes the backup camera image to become much brighter and solves the visibility problem. Therefore, I think there is a BMW sw problem that dims the rearview camera too much when it believes it is night time.

On 06-02-2024, at approximately 1430 hours, I was stopped in traffic, because of a red traffic light and I was the last vehicle in line. In less than a minute later, I was hit by another vehicle. The other vehicle left approximately 183' of skid marks on the road and I determined that vehicle was traveling at approximately 60 mph, before it hit me, when I was stopped in traffic. The damage was moderate. I have the executive package on my BMW X5, which has a 4 way camera system, that records an incident, when an impact occurs. After the impact, the camera system is to record 20 seconds before the impact, as well as 20 seconds after the impact. I was not sure how to retrieve the video, so I had to call BMW genius and the employee had to walk me thru the steps to retrieve the video. The camera system was set up for automatic recording, as well as manual recording, but no video of the accident was ever recorded. The only video that was recorded and saved, was from January 13, 2024, when I was showing my wife, how to manually record something. According to the person who hit me, he said "I could not stop, because I had a bad wheel" and that person also included that statement in the accident report. Since the accident, I sustained lower left back pain, left hip pain and upper left leg pain in the muscles. According to my x-ray images of my left hip, the head of the femur bone is flattened, due to the impact sustained following the collision. According to my doctor, I have bone spurs, which causes me pain when standing, walking, sitting and complete hip replacement is now required, to eliminate my pain. My lawyer suggested that I file a complaint with the NHTSA, because the camera system should have recorded the collision and that would have given us a clear view and understanding, on what the other driver was doing before the collision. BMW is at fault for the camera system, which did not record the accident, when it was set up for automatic and manual.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2023, shortly after 8:30 p. M. , I turned into the driveway for my columbia residence and proceeded with caution toward my carport. The weather was clear, with no rain or ice, and my driveway was free of all obstacles. My 2021 BMW X5 began to accelerate and move forward at a dangerous speed. Though I applied the brakes, they were unresponsive, and the vehicle collided, with force, into the brick steps at the carport entrance to my home. Upon impact, all airbags in the vehicle deployed, and the emergency response system was activated. Prior to impact, none of the vehicle’s safety monitoring features responded. These would include the system by which the vehicle’s speed is regulated whenever a vehicle on the roadway, in front of the X5, slows down or brakes. Neither did the warning system activate – the system that monitors the presence of obstacles in front of or behind the X5. The 2021 BMW X5 sustained significant front-end damage in the collision, and my residence was also damaged by the vehicle. I deny that the incident was operator error and believe it to have been the result of a vehicle or computer malfunction. Interestingly enough, the X5 had been serviced by BMW of columbia on Tuesday, December 12, 2023. That routine service included a brake flush.

Rear cross traffic alert system never works whenever a car is approaching. Only works when it is too late. Definitely no pedestrian alert. Much cheaper vehicles with this feature actually sound an alert before any emergency activation. Dealer states system is working according to spec. BMW forum has many complaints with this system that cost extra $s on my SUV. This is a safety issue & a manufacturer quality issue.

We purchased the car June 3rd 2023. Since purchase the car has given a check engine light over6 times and the expansion valves have been replaced. It has spend 50+ days in service since purchase. On 1/26/24 the high voltage system light cam eon and the car is back for repairs for 7 days and still not resolved. The automated parking systems are prone to errors and have nearly cased accidents. Luckily I intervened and stopped using them. The esim features that are advertised do not work. I have spoken to BMW na and hey have not been helpful.
I was trying to park my car on March 11, 2023 at noon, and I noticed a sudden uncontrolled acceleration even when my foot was off the accelerator pedal. Parking collision front sensors failed to provide an early warning, and automatic emergency brake did not engage leading to a minor collision with the vehicle parked in front. The situation occurred so rapidly that I did not have enough time to react quickly and apply brakes. I managed to apply brakes to avoid a serious incident, but it was not quick enough to even avoid this minor collision. I have reported this to BMW USA, however the car has not been inspected by a dealer or an independent service center after the incident. There were no warnings displayed prior to this incident, however I have had consistent issues pertaining to the operation of front sensors. I had BMW certified dealer inspect front sensors, and according to them the sensors do not provide an early warning as per the design but they have adjusted the sensitivity. The adjustment did not improve the situation, and I provided that feedback to the service center as well. The sensors did fail at twice prior to this incident, and the dealer inspected that as part of sensor sensitivity adjustment. I drove this vehicle to the BMW certified dealer more than twice to have the front sensors and other things inspected prior to this incident. Nevertheless, this uncontrolled acceleration is something that I have never experienced before, and I am traumatized to even drive this vehicle comfortably. All the automated systems designed to prevent or avoid collision did not engage leading me to not trust anything.
Sunroof drains - front and back overflow and drone down the pillars into the front and rear electronic boxes. A know problem for this BMW. I want BMW to repair and fix this problem. Water damaged control boxes are thousands of dollars. This problem should be a recall! BMW was sued in 2018 and settled the case. I am unable to file a claim for this now. I recently moved from southern CA to new orleans la. There is a lot mor torrential rain here. Never had a problem in southern CA.

Forward sensors did not activate braking system, vehicle subsequently jumped the curb and struck concrete piling, embedding it into the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. I sent an email to the company and the incident was reported to the police. The vehicle was determined to be a total loss by new jersey manufacturers insurance company after being inspected by the collision company. As my wife pulled into the parking space, there were no indications observed.
After the passenger would vacate the car the passenger seat belt alarm would come on and stay on till I would take action by hitting the seat with my palm. I tried three times in having the dealership to repair the seat pad sensor while it was under warranty, but they said they could not duplicate it. After the warrant expired I returned it the dealership and then they said it was a defective seat pad sensor. (ugh).
