Other Fuel System Pump Problems of BMW X5 - part 1

BMW X5 owners have reported 64 problems related to other fuel system pump (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/22/2021

Vehicle shut off while stopped. A smell of hot electrical was present immediately before the shut off. Inspection of the vehicle showed a blown fuse for the fuel pump circut, as well as melting of the plastic power connection to the fuel pump, and the insulation on the power wires themselves. The bare wires were exposed at the connection. The wiring harness was stiff from the connector of the fuel pump to the rubber seal on the body.

2 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/29/2020

I had a failed high pressure fuel pump, which BMW admits is faulty, and they have an extended warranty for. I had to have it replaced, but since I had it changed out at an independent shop BMW refuses to reimburse me for it. Just looking to see if there are any options for avenues for reimbursement.

3 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/02/2020

There have been two occasions that I have changed the fuel pump on my vehicle. It is extremely dangerous that it turns off suddenly. I am so afraid that this might just happen worst thing is that there are no light indicators that will tell you that there is something wrong.

4 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/18/2019

While driving home on the most dangerous highway in colorado, my vehicle suddenly went from doing 75mph to 50mph during traffic hour, almost causing my vehicle to get into an accident, with my family in the car. So very dangerous. The engine light and the engine malfunction message came on. I was able to merge off the highway and have my car and have a mechanic take a look at it. The error code is p15df (high pressure fuel pump). I did some research on this and found that BMW had been taken to court on this safety issue. BMW had recalled 1000's of BMW's for this exact same issue. I wrote to BMW customer relations and their response basically is that my car's VIN does to qualify for this recall. I stated to them that it should be recalled because it has the exact same problem as the 1000's that were recalled. In reality they do not want to pay for it. I feel that my vehicle should be recalled to include 1000's of other X5's, before someone is killed.

5 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

I got an engine malfunction warning light on my 2011 BMW X5. I brought it to a mechanic who told me the issue is the high pressure fuel pump. There is a recall for other Bmws although mine is not on the list. The mechanic indicated this is an ongoing issue for my BMW and should be covered by a recall.

6 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/24/2019

While my wife was driving to work the vehicle lost power and stalled. She had just turned off the highway, and onto a side street. She was stuck in the middle of the road and had to be towed. The vehicle would not re-start and would not engage to neutral, so the tow truck driver had to use skid blocks. BMW inspected and found the fuel pump had failed and contaminated the entire fuel system with swarf. This leaves the driver and vehicle in a dangerous position as the vehicle completely stalls with no prior warning.

7 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/22/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2012 BMW X5. While driving 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to momentum BMW (10002 southwest fwy, houston, TX 77074) where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump failed. The manufacturer was also contacted and did not assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

8 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/10/2019

While driving on city street, vehicle lost power and stalled. Was able to keep the vehicle rolling into a parking lot. Would not re-start and would not engage to neutral following emergency park release procedure. BMW inspected and found catastrophic fuel pump failure that sent particles into fuel system and injectors. The vehicle is a 3. 5d diesel model. Other owners of similar vehicles have complained about same issue and re-occurring after warranty repair. This leaves the driver and vehicle in a dangerous position as vehicle completely stalls with no prior warning.

9 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

On 12/14/18 at 11pm on a dark road with my young kids in the backseat and wife as passenger, we were in motion at 35 mph when the car suddenly lost power. The dash indicated a drivetrain malfunction and the engine completely died. To make matters worse, this car has a transmission lock to prevent two-wheel towing that makes it near impossible to put the car in neutral. We are left sitting in the middle of a dark road around a blind curve and no way to move the car, and a flat-bed tow truck would not arrive for hours. BMW has diagnosed a high-pressure fuel pump failure that sent metal fragments throughout the fuel system. The entire fuel system including injectors must be replaced at a cost of over $14,000. I have learned that this same car had the same repair six months earlier by the previous owner. This car has suffered two catastrophic fuel system failures resulting in driver and occupants being stranded in very dangerous situations this year alone. Had this happened on the freeway at high speed, it could have caused a major accident with substantial injuries or even death as a result. A quick internet search reveals that this is a common problem with the X5 diesel high pressure fuel pump with many owners across the country reporting similar problems, some of whom state feeling lucky to have escaped without injury. It is highly possible that there are cases of this same vehicle causing tragic accidents that have not been tied back to the fuel pump due to excessive vehicle damage or perhaps driver death. BMW has refused to comment, but other BMW models have been recalled for fuel pump problems.

10 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/17/2018

We were in our 2017 BMW X5 diesel driving on highway 14s in santa clarita, CA on the 17th of Nov 2017 at 1:30pm . Accelerated to pass a car, felt a sudden surge, drivetrain malfunction indication came on, indicated safe to proceed at a moderate speed. Attempted to accelerate, no response. Was able to coast to the right median between the freeway and the on-ramp away from on-coming cars. BMW came to a complete stop and was not able to start. Contacted BMW assist, was informed that it would be about a 3 to 4 hour wait for the tow vehicle. Tow vehicle arrived at 2:45 pm, unable to put X5 in neutral, had to use skid plates to get X5 onto the tow vehicle. Got the X5 to the dealership at 3:20pm, inform the consultant what happened and left the X5 there. Consultant called on Monday and informed us that the high pressure fuel pump was the issue and that brass shaving from the fuel pump contaminated the system, informed us that they were going to replace anything from the back to the front of the vehicle that was effected by the fuel pump.

11 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

Kept getting mail about a recall my car had didnt think it was that important so I stalled the process a little until I kept getting mail non stop about the matter so I finally find the time to take my car to get the recall done of course I imagined it will be a walk in the park due to the fact that it was free of charge , so after I get the recall done for fuel pump and airbags I pick vehicle up from the dealer everything seems to be fine , next day comes my car leaves me stranded on a random block and completely shuts down on me , what makes matters worst now im stuck somewhere and have to get a tow truck to take me somewhere im not bothering or move me out the way , I contact the dealer tel them whats going on they make me pay a tow truck to bring the car to them again , so I bring the car to the dealer and let them check over the work they just did on my car because I wasnt having any problems with my car before this literally none maybe a lightbulb went out that was about it nothing else even passes inspection with flying colors , so anyways pass that now they telling me that the problem is in the fuel system that they just was suppose to replace mind you I never had a problem with my vehicle and ive owned it a few years , so now I got this recall done and now this problem comes up , so now I agree to pay them 1100$ just to fix something that was suppose to be free which im not happy about one bit not only they take longer then they suppose too working on my car but few days after I pay them and take my vehicle now the same problem again !! get stranded so now im not thinking going back because I cant afford to have something else come up and have to pay once again ! so as of now I had to take my car to my own personal mechanic so he can fix a problem my car never had prior to this recall visit im furious and spend over 3000 trying to clean up the dealers mess !.

12 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

High pressure fuel pump failure on n55 engine. 10/10 manufacture date used the exact hpfp as the one that BMW extended the warranty on the n54 engine. When you pull out in front of traffic the engine goes into limp mode and no acceleration causing a major safety issue. Also it can just die leaving you stranded in the middle of nowhere.

13 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

This 2014 BMW X5 has a diesel engine. The fuel pump has failed twice in nine months causing the vehicle to suddenly lose power and completely stop. The vehicle was stationary at a stop light both times. However, this can occur while in motion at any time. This diesel engine fuel pump failure impacts entire fuel system which requires a complete replacement (please see attachment for first repair. The car is currently at BMW service}. This problem will occur again because they keep using the same parts. I am sure with some investigating you will find that this is an unreported problem with BMW. The safety of my family is at stake and BMW is being completely evasive at this point.

14 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/07/2018

My car caught fire while driving under my passenger backseat where the fuel pump is located up under. The fire department came, snatched out seat and put the flame out.

15 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/16/2018

We had a defective in-tank fuel pump replace in September 2016 by an independent mechanic. We then received a recall from BMW USA in December 2016. We've since had BMW san diego review the installation and they determined that the part installed was not a BMW part so BMW USA denied reimbursement under the tread act. We then confirmed with our mechanic that BMW parts were used and forwarded this info to BMW but they still refuse to reimburse. We replace a defective part and should be compensated . Reference; BMW correspondence [1-8113168403] . I asked for photos and their denial in writing and they refused to provide either. I saw the part initially removed and it was burned up inside the gas tank!!!.

16 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/17/2017

The contact owns a 2012 BMW X5. While driving approximately 30 mph, the check engine warning and low power mode indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to walser BMW auto campus of wichita (11000 e 13th st n, wichita, KS 67206, phone: (316) 221-3841) where it was diagnosed that the high pressure fuel pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. In addition, while attempting to drive the vehicle, the check engine and low power mode indicators illuminated again. The vehicle was taken back to walser BMW where it was diagnosed that the vanos solenoid failed, there were metal shavings in the oil, and the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 75,140.

17 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/10/2017

My car has been in the shop since 12/19/2017. My car was in the shop for the fuel pump recall and change of spark plugs. A year later it went back into the shop for replacing a fuel injector along with spark plugs. 2 months later its back in the BMW shop for fuel pressure pump & turbo hose. My car is constantly in the shop and I am paying for everything.

18 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/22/2017

Hesitation starting the car, diagnosis by dealer was fuel pump failing. Mileage was 65,000. Cost to repair 1500. 00. I see there was a recall for model years 2008-2011.

19 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/23/2017

BMW fuel pump recall vehicle is hard to start and it is progressively getting worse. There is a mandatory NHTSA mandated fuel pump recall on this vehicle. We received the owner notification letter. I was told by the dealer at first that the fuel pump is not available. After I persisted the dealer stated that the fuel pump is available but that they have to perform a diagnostic first. A) it is unlawful to charge a diagnostic fee in conjunction with a federally mandated recall. B) the fuel pump issue has been known to BMW for many years (BMW had a voluntary reimbursement of fuel pump repairs in place until NHTSA mandated the recall of all vehicles with the affected fuel pump. ) the fuel pump should be installed and the parts should be readily available. I just talked with bwm of north America customer service. They stated: * I would have to take the vehicle to the dealer and have a diagnostic run * I would be charged for the diagnostic if it turns out to be an issue other than the fuel pump * if it turns out that the fuel pump module is defective, then I would not have to pay the diagnostic fee this illegally ties a different service (that I may have to pay) to a federally mandated recall. It is not in dispute that the fuel pump recall is mandatory. It is BMW's allocation of parts availability that may result in me having to pay the diagnostic fee.

20 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/17/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2009 BMW X5. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the fuel cap warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to mckenna BMW (located at 10900 firestone blvd, norwalk, CA 90650, (562) 219-4570), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired per NHTSA campaign number: 16v746000 (fuel system, gasoline) and the fuel pump was also repaired under warranty at mckenna BMW; however, the repairs did not correct the failure. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 74,025.

21 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/13/2017

In January 2015, I bought a BMW X5 35d twun turbo (n57t engine) oe equipped with a bosch high pressure fuel pump ("hpfp") part #0445010667. Two weeks ago, I was driving at 75 mph in the 4th lane of a 6 lane highway when my car jerked and a "drive train malfunction" message came on the screen. I was towed to the dealer thinking this would be covered under warranty - the car is less than 3 years old! I'm told that there was a "catastrophic failure" of the high pressure fuel pump that I did not cause, had no warning of and could not have prevented. That failure caused metal shavings to break off, damage the fuel injectors and spread throughout the entire fuel system requiring replacement at the cost of $15,000! I was then told that my car was out of warranty because of the mileage (I drive my sons to lots of baseball tournaments so I am over 50k miles after this summer). I asked BMW na to stand behind their vehicle and repair it under warranty because no 2. 5 year old vehicle, especially a BMW, should have this happen to it. Indeed, a pump failure, no matter how catastrophic, should not require replacement of the entire fuel system. There are lawsuits out there over these hpfps and BMW has recalled over 150,000 vehicles and extended the warranties on many of the hpfps to 120k, but apparently not mine, even though it experienced the same type of failure, is made by the same company (bosch) and out of the same material (different part number). BMW has offered to fix it at warranty cost and contribute 50%, but that is still over $6,000 or roughly 10% of the original cost of the vehicle. Please investigate this as it is dangerous and consumers need to be aware that this is still happening.

22 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/18/2017

My vehicle is having a recall regarding the in-tank fuel pump since October 2016 BMW of san diego has failed to provide a replacement part in a timely manner and BMW of el cajon has just provided the necessary part for my personal vehicle I have waited almost a year for a part to be provided for my vehicle. Moreover, the car has been experiencing failures in ignition and stalling due to this particular issue and possibly other issues that are derived from this specific recall. Other issues regarding the engine could be in question due to the fact that the engine rarely shuts by itself when starting the ignition, also there is a problem involving cold starts in most BMW vehicles and my car is not an exception. The engine shutting off by itself is a special concern because this may mean there are other faulty parts located deep within the vehicle.

23 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

X5 xdrive 35i sav; while driving under normal street and highway conditions, vehicle speed and engine rpm have become unstable. This causes the vehicle to increase and decrease it's speed intermittently and without warning. The vehicle is not trustworthy as you may lose power, or unintentionally accelerate while trying to execute a driving maneuver, causing a dangerous condition. Check engine warning light illuminates. Vehicle was brought to BMW dealership (zt motors) for diagnostics. Service personnel stated that the high pressure fuel pump indicated a low fuel pressure at the inlet. This would tell me that the low pressure fuel pump is not delivering the correct fuel flow/pressure to the high pressure fuel pump. Ref NHTSA campaign # 16v746000 et al. Diagnostics also indicated the valvetronic motor shows it short circuiting. Dealer recommended replacement of valvetronic motor, cam shaft and oil injectors. The replacement of the cam shaft and oil injectors are unnecessary maintenance items, only the valvetronic motor would need to be replaced, and fuel system reprogrammed. Ref NHTSA campaign # 14v176000 et al. Recommend recall replacement of both high pressure and low pressure fuel pumps, valvetronic motor, vanos cam shaft and oil injectors as well as reprogramming of fuel operating system. Also replace cam shaft mounting bolts.

24 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/26/2017

Drive the vehicle on vacation and the engine would studder and stall on the highway and an error prompted on the vehicle dashboard that displayed "engine malfunction" reduced power. Occasionally the vehicle engine would cut off while on the road and needed to be towed to the dealership. The dealer diagnosed that it has a high pressure fuel pump malfunction that needed to be replaced and although the vehicle is not part of the recall it showed the same symptoms as some problematic models. This occurred while driving the vehicle on both local roads and the highway. In one occasion, I needed to restart the car to get it to a safe location.

25 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/03/2017

Takata inflators and fuel pump recalls. BMW still has no fix for these issues which is a ticking time bomb for any occupants in the vehicle.

26 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/19/2017

We are smell gasoline inside the cabin while we were driving and also when we stop we could still smell gasoline. We took in to the BMW shop on July 5, 2017, but they said they didn't the recall in-tank fuel pump part yet.

27 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/21/2017

This SUV has 3 safety recalls. Both the airbags are in the takata and the fuel pump creates and extreme risk to me and my family's life. I do not understand why BMW is as a company is keeping these faulty cars on the road. Every time I get in it I am nervous and afraid for my life. Now my wife and kids do not drive with me in the car. It has become a huge burden. It is shameful that BMW but even more so that our government will allow these unsafe cars on the roads. Every time I talked to BMW they try to down play the issue. But I simply can't continue to drive this car and it's unfair to me because dealerships won't even take it due to the safety recalls. I keep smelling fumes from the car and I believe these cars also have additional defects with the radiator to add to the issues already explained above. Today the car stalled and I saw smoke from the hood. I don't know if it was related to the fuel pump situation but it's so annoying and frustrating that BMW is waiting for people to actually die before they will address these defects in their cars!!!! unreal!.

28 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/07/2017

I purchased a car in 2/4/2017, on second driving, the car stall on the green light. I did contact dealership named sharpest rides, to ask what cause the problem, as they told me to drop car at their place to investigate and diagnosis. I did drop, after day they contact me and mentioned that they cannot duplicate the problem, because not enough tools, so they refer to BMW of denver downtown. The BMW dealer did test and diagnosis of couple days and respond with "we cannot duplicate of problem", so they return my car to me with unsafe condition. After while I starting have same problem with stall engine in the middle of road, at parking lot, or one day wasn't even start engine, or when car stall and I am lucky the guy didn't hit me in the back, but he did horned on me, showed me finger, and so on. I did contact multiple times with dealerships, with corporate headquarter at us north America and did have a chance open a case, have a chance talk to supervising, but everyone saying to me because car didn't showed error massage and they cannot duplicate problem they wont replace fuel pump, even they knew this is a fuel pump causing a problem. In addition, they did recall 136000 fuel pump, but they didn't want change now, and I did try explain them everyday we are on the road, we must keep our life safe and keep our environment safe, but they still telling me we cannot duplicate a problem. My car was a second time at same dealership on 4/72017 with same problem, and they still telling me everything fine with your car, just drive, I have four witness that can verbally in writing proof that my car stall. Maybe the car is drive-able but unsafe, because you cannot predict where it can be stop. Please review and see if manufacture or dealership following on all safety procedure to let people drive in high risk and dangerous of life on road. Please call me 7203013937. Thank you.

29 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/01/2017

I am writing in regards to a technical service bulletin / recall from BMW si b16 0102 which I obtained from the NHTSA website. My BMW, 5uxff03593lj96493, was showing an emissions fault code related to the part addressed in the unlimited age/mileage TSB. I went to the dealer regarding this item to figure out what can be done at around 110,000 miles in April of 2017. I was informed the part is not in stock. When I returned in June to see about the service being done, I was, again, told the part was not in stock - and that I also do not qualify as the vehicle now has 130,000 miles, and the new bulletin has a mileage cutoff of 120,000 miles. I was informed I could contact BMW directly and discuss a hardship. upon contacting BMW directly, I was informed that they would not do anything to help. I am attaching the original TSB and updated TSB for the diesel exhaust fluid issue. I am also attaching the response from BMW. Additionally, my vehicle is now exhibiting problems with the high pressure fuel pump, another covered emissions item for unlimited mileage; and am not seeing any resolve for that. The TSB is attached. Peter wheeler 314 651 3245 peter@theexceeder. Com.

30 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/26/2017

My fuel pump has been failing to create the correct amount of pressure in the fuel line, on and off, for several months, resulting in the vehicle suddenly operating at "reduced power" when driving. This then causes me a safety issue as I can no longer maintain proper speeds, especially when on the highway. It also causes me to have to restart the vehicle several times in a row as the vehicle often stalls out several times before finally achieving the proper pressure. My vehicle is model year 2012, which BMW states is outside of the current recall. It appears that my vehicle is having the issues outlined in the recall 16v-746. My request here is to have the recall amended to include my make model and year of vehicle.

31 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2007 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/08/2017

"takata recall " I have reached out on several occasion to the dealer and the BMW recall dept concerning the problems that I'm having with the fuel pump, they assured me that they would reach out to the dealership and let them know but they have not done so, I am totally fed up with the stalling of the vehicle the engine light keep coming on and according to the recall the fuel pump can cause these sort of problems. The recall was well over a year ago and the fuel pumps were not sent to the dealership they keep saying that they are not in stock and have no way of ordering them until it is.

34 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/15/2017

Takata recall. The contact owns a 2009 BMW X5. The contact stated that the check engine and small vacuum system leak warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the fuel pump was leaking fumes and needed to be replaced. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 16v071000 (air bags), 16v364000 (air bags), and 16v746000 (fuel system, gasoline). The part needed for the repair was not available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact called two local dealers. One dealer informed the contact that the recall was too new and they would call the contact back. The other dealer informed the contact they would not service the recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Parts distribution disconnect and VIN tool confirms parts not available.

35 Other Fuel System Pump problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/13/2017

I did received a recall letter about my front driver airbag module in March 2016 and immediately contacted BMW of cape cod mass and as a answer they said that the part is not available in the moment and I will get second letter when it is available and ready for replacement. It has been almost a year and there is still no answer. Now I get second recall letter about the fuel pump in my fuel tank. I do travel every week from cape cod mass to new york and there is strong smell of gasoline in my car on long distance travel, but according to BMW cape cod I will have to wait for the part to be available and just need to get used to the smell. I try to call and ask to order the parts that need to be replaced from the recall letters and from the parts department replied that they can get the parts in a day or two as long as I am buying it as a regular customer, but as soon as I try to get the parts replaced as a recall I get a answer that the parts are not available at the moment. When I contact BMW of cape cod mass the only thing I get is that I have to wait for another letter - I have never been asked for my name, car VIN or any other info, and looks like there is not intend this recall to be fixed. I am concerned about my safety and would like this to be fixed up. Thank you.
