BMW X5 owners have reported 17 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Drove at the speed of 75 mph in the highway all in a sudden the car lost power until its speed dropped to 62 mph. It is a hybrid. Dash board showed some reserved battery power and half tank of gasoline. It is a big safety issue. Need to find the cause of it.

With only 66,000 miles , this is my second BMW diesel that requires a replacement scr active tank at a cost in excess of $2,000 so the additive can be measured. The older version of the X5 received a warranty extension, but not the current model even though the problem persists. Shameful.

Vehicle's engine, being a diesel, requires nox trap system and scr systems in order to reduce harmful emissions per epa standards. In order for the scr system to work properly, the engine must inject def (diesel-exhaust fluid) into the scr system. In the BMW X5 35d, the def system is comprised of two tanks: the active tank and the passive tank. A common problem with this system is the primary sensor of the passive tank failing. The sensor itself fails, but the entire tank has to be replaced as a result of the sensor's issues, resulting in several thousands of dollars being spent due to the sensor itself not being able to be replaced in the original tank. Recall is recommended for BMW to replace these sensors as the failure of these sensors results in the scr catalyst system failing to operate, which in turn significantly decreases engine performance, increases exhaust emissions, and results in the engine not knowing the capacity on which to operate. This can be dangerous.

The car stopped without any warning 3 time in the middle of the road while driving my wife and kids inside the car. I consider very lucky this happened on county road two time and ones in the shopping center parking lot, instead of middle of the highway. I have taken the car to the dealership for the second time they are still trying to figure out what's wrong with gauges. Last time it happened was 11/13 while my wife was driving with the daughter to doctor's appointment, gas reading shows above 1/4 tank and 146 miles remaining (I have pictures of the cluster). But the car abruptly stop twithought any warning which will be a deadly situation if happened in the highway. The reason for it to stop was no gas in the tank though it gives a reading of over 1/4 tank 146 miles remaining. My last visit to the dealer was about a month back and I was told they replaced the gas tank and the sensor inside the tank which was covered under vehicle warranty. I feel very unsafe driving this car, I have reported the issues BMW na customer service and the car is with BMW of rockville.

I have an 2011 X5 diesel. I got engine light on because of passive tank problem. I love the car but this car has so many ses lights after I got it. I fixed active tank out of my own pocket before they had extend warranty for active tank. Its lights on again and this time under covered. But after couple of month the passive tank got problem. I called BMW but they said it's not covered. It's $3000 again. I talked to dealer, dealer said it will not effect my drive because it's a back up tank (only be used if active tank broke) but it won't pass emission test. I am really frustrated with this ses light on and I did lots of research about passive tank. Lots of people had same problem and some got covered by BMW. I tried to communicate with BMW about the scr tank. Passive tank is the same component as active tank and it's back up tank. You already know these tanks have problem why cover only one and let costumer pay the other one. And why some covered some don't? this is really not fair and I can't pass emission test without fixing this engine light on. It's also really bother's me (engine light on) when I drive my car every day with my kids and don't know it there is any other problem except passive tank. Please help me on anyway you can. Thank you so much for your time!.
Frequent issues with def active/passive tanks and sensors and the dealer runs about $2500 upward charges for each of these repairs. The complete X5 diesel is full off issues compared to their 35i.

Diesel engine, scr passive tank/sensor needs replace. BMW dealer said its not covered in the warranty (extended warranty of 10y/120k miles, but scr active tank/sensor is covered. What? my mileage 94k miles). Passive tank still part of the emissions systems. Cost is $3k repair. I don't understand (BMW) put the sensor built into the tank. I'm sure a lot of BMW owners will run into this issue costing lots of dollars and profit for BMW. Need to get BMW to cover this cost.
2009 BMW X5 diesel passive tank failed. I told the dealer and called BMW customer care and told them this is emmisions related and they should have replaced it when they replaced the active tank a year ago. BMW diesels will not pass smog due to defective designs of the active and passive tanks that contain def. The sensors are located inside the tank and cannot be replaced by an over the counter BMW part. Hence the whole tanks have to be replaced. BMW customer service is not willing to help and basically told me to go buy another brand which I will after owning 4 BMW. BMW should be heavily investigated for designing a poor emmisions system found in the BMW X5 and 335d diesel vehicles sold in the USA. Shame on you BMW for screwing your loyal customes.

The diesel exhaust fluid passive tank in my BMW X5 has failed, which from what I've read in many forums is an unacceptably common occurrence. While taking the car into the dealership to have three other recalls addressed I asked about the tank being covered in the extended emmissions warranty on the car. They informed me that the main diesel exhaust fluid tank is covered (which they replaced because it had failed too), but the reserve or passive tank was not covered under the warranty. Now there is a countdown on the dash that if I drive over 900 miles without fixing it the car will know longer start. I have had my diesel exhaust fluid filled multiple times but the message returns immediately. To replace the defective tank is $2,500. I'm making a complaint because as I said this is a widespread issue with this part and if BMW realizes there is a defect on the main tank, why wouldn't they also replace the passive tank under extended warranty?.
Check engine light came on and BMW service center told me the sensors in the passive diesel exhaust fluid tank failed and entire tank needs to be replaced. BMW extended the warranty on the active tank, but not passive. Think its ridiculous that only one tank is covered while the passive is not. This is a well-documented issue on BMW's diesel.
I have had several issues with this recall, I only had the car for 1. 5 years and this is the third recall! my current main concern is there is a burning gas like oil odor in my car. I received a recall notice saying remedy is unavailable! this is unacceptable my life and my children life is in danger. BMW should provide an immediate resolution!! when I start the car I smell burning smell and sometimes see smoke come from hood of car. I took my car to BMW 2 months ago for service and was told all was well with my car. Two other recalls were corrected however, I still have the same gas odor which was due to another recall dealing with the fuel tank. This is a serious safety hazard driving this car, and its an insult for BMW to send a letter stating the issue but state there is no remedy when the recall consequences can cause a fire! and you telling me there is no immediate remedy!! please investigate this, I will also be contacting BMW customer relations in regards to this matter.

Crystallized diesel exhaust fluid (def) clogging selective catalyst reduction (scr) metering valve. Valve failure. Additional subsequent damage to def metering line, nox sensor, wiring, connectors, etc. Check engine light on. Multiple codes set in computer. Same issue with same scr metering unit part # 18 30 7 807 206 (bosch oem) as acknowledged in BMW technical service bulletin si b 18 04 12 which covers replacement of selective catalyst reduction (scr) metering unit in e90 series vehicles with same m57y diesel engine as my vehicle. BMW has extended warranty coverage for my vehicle to 10 years/120,000 miles for other related diesel exhaust fluid (def) issues, including, but not limited to active def tank/sensor, footwell module, egr/nox sensors, etc.
BMW has to fix this priority 3 recall, 2 are the front airbags,(inflator rupture could result in metal fragments striking the driver or other passengers, potentially resulting in serious injury or death) before some really bad can appen. 1 is the fuel tank leaks can cause fire another real bad option can appen. I have my BMW stalling last week was very bad, the car just stop on freeway with not control of the steerweel was very scary and also my and my family life was in danger. When I go to BMW (kelly BMW columbus) they ignore completly the recall and they start to charge me 145 for stulling when should be free and see the attachment for what they try to charge me. I will like to get this fix soon as possible before me or my family can risk life. Thank you.
I was at a stop sign then accelerated onto a round-a-bout when the vehicle stopped it would not accelerate even though my foot was on the gas pedal and the car was still on. I tried signaling my emergency lights but the whole inside of the dashboard was going on & off not letting me signal anything. I put the vehicle in park & turned off the car. When I tried turning it back on it would just click and all lights would turn on. I waited for 20 min then tried to start it again & it did start but then sounded like it was dying out and eventually would shut off, there was more than a half tank of gas in the vehicle.

I own a BMW X5 diesel 2009 model year, sometime 2012 the def active tank was replaced as covered by recall. Now it has started to give the same cel code ( active tank temp sensor failure). The replacement for this issue is very costly. This is part of emissions and BMW does not want any replacement without any cost to consumers.
An engine light comes on when hard breaking. Some time the lights go off after next refueling. When check in, the computer indicate some problem with sensor related to fuel tank.
Passenger door got locked - unable to open. Deler had to take door out to fix. This major safety issue with very expensive repair from BMW dealer. Got engine light for diesel fuel tank sensor. BMW told me to take two month to get part from germany. Waiting for part and high repair bill. Again got engine light for other reason. I am com earn about safest of my 2010 BMW X5 diesel model and like help from NHTSA. Thanks.
