36 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/10/2024

My 2024 BMW X5 50e has stranded me three times now due to "drivetrain malfunction". Each time my safety has been at extreme risk due to driving on busy streets and interstate in atlanta. Fortunately, today I had not made it to the interstate or I would have been in a the worst possible situation with my X5 locking down and shutting off with no notice. Given my long commute, I can no longer take the risk of driving the X5 50e. BMW na should be held responsible and no one's safety should be at risk that BMW has put us in given this problem seems to be a common occurrence.

38 Power Train problem of the 2018 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/17/2024

While driving moderately on suburban roads, the car suddenly jerked forward and stalled, and a warning came on indicating "drive train malfunction". The message said that continuing driving was possible and to contact dealer soon at convenience. Then, 30 seconds later while still driving, the car completely died. Engine died and car began coasting. Had to coast into a parking lot where the car came to a complete stop. Tried troubleshooting and turning the engine on and off for an hour; the car would turn on for a split second, stutter and growl as if it was out of gas (it was not), and then shut off. Car had to be towed (six hours later) and is awaiting inspection at dealer. Nothing at all indicated an issue prior to this happening; in fact, the car was just serviced at the dealer literally ten days ago. Incredibly unsafe and insanely frustrating experience to have the car randomly and without warning die while traveling in traffic.

39 Power Train problem of the 2019 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/14/2024

Reference recall no. 24v-576, I believe the issue reported in the recall is related to the 'auto start' feature of the vehicle. As a result of this failure, the safety issue can be much serious than what is stated in recall. In addition to the electrical overload of the starter, leading to risk of fire, the vehicle will not start, unable to shift out of park therefore, potential of stranding the vehicle and the passengers in the middle of the road. The following occurred on [xxx]. At 2:30pm, we( my wife, 2 daughters and I) were traveling [xxx] in tracy, in the fast lane in our 2019 X5. Auto start feature was active, when I pressed on the gas pedal, engine suddenly turned off. The car would not start. There was no warning or any error message. We were stuck in the middle of the fast lane in heavy traffic and cars were passing on the both sides, making it impossible to be even get out and walk to safety. I tried to restart the car multiple times with success. We felt in danger of being struck by another vehicle. Luckily, the chp was a few minutes behind us and stopped to help us. We tried to put the vehicle in neutral so it can be pushed out to the side and not block traffic. I called the east bay BMW and the road assistance for help with putting the vehicle in neutral but I was told it can’t be done. The chp (2 officers) and I tried to put the car in neutral but without any success. I with eastbay BMW and was told that noting can be done to put the vehicle in neutral. The only way to shift the car in neutral is from under the car and requires a mechanic . There was electrical burning smell coming from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to the eastbay dealership in pleasanton, CA. Upon inspection, the dealer stated the issue is due to bad battery and it caused the starter to overload as I attempted to start the car. I was told that none of it's covered by warranty and I had to pay for the repairs. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 5.

40 Power Train problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/03/2024

A recall on the prop shaft was done in 2017 and today 06/24 while driving on the freeway I heard a loud clunking noise and then a huge pop and I pulled over on the side of the road to find my prop shaft had exploded and messed up everything. Now im stuck with a nonfunctional car because a part that was allegedly replaced for safety ended up exploding while I was driving.

41 Power Train problem of the 2020 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/24/2024

How does a known manufacturing defect ( or the factory-filled transfer case oil does not meet BMW specifications. ) not become a safety concern. The wheels have intermittent power from the transfer case. My car showed the concern at 55k miles and the warranty company made me go through another 12 months of the shuddering issue before replacing. When moving from winter to all season tire it became more noticeable. When setting off from a slope my power loss was even greater causing the front wheels to slip from the shuddering power train. This possess a greater risk on loose paving.

42 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/22/2024

Four check engine lights and a drivetrain malfunction related to the high voltage hybrid system including problems with the battery cooling, continuing to charge instead of stopping at 100%, and high voltage faults. Coolant smell in the ventilation system in the cabin as well as hot electrical smell after charging and from the regenerative system on a long descent in the mountains. Has been happening multiple times and taken to the dealer multiple times over the past 10 months. The dealer has only replaced a part one time (the evaporative container), but typically just resets the system and sends it home. I have reported this to BMW na and asked for a buyback, but so far it has been denied.

45 Power Train problem of the 2014 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

The vehicle has been part of recall #18v-755 related to engine egr cooler leakage. The egr cooler is part of emission's control. On this vehicle the egr can leak which causes coolant to get into intake manifold and potentially cause risk of fire. BMW denied to cover the repair on my vehicle reason I am asking for support. Have already called BMW customer service 1800-831-1117 but unfortunately no support was offered. Car have been fixed by replacing the egr with genuine BMW part. Invoice attached.

49 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/07/2024

I purchased a new BMW X5 50e in September 2023. It currently has 1601 miles. As I was getting onto the freeway onramp on 3/7/24, I felt the SUV losing power and got an error message (actually 2). The first message indicated the "high-voltage system," telling me I could continue driving but should have the system checked. The second message stated a "drive train malfunction" and indicated roadside assistance was not needed. The error messages provided incorrect guidance as I lost all power to drive the SUV. I could drift the SUV over to the shoulder of the onramp. Fortunately, I had not fully gotten onto the freeway, or I could have been hit when the SUV lost power. The car had no power and would not drive. There was no warning of malfunction prior to the sudden loss of power and the simultaneous appearance of the warning message - one followed by another. I tried restarting the SUV, but it would immediately shift back to park. It was not drivable, and I had to have it towed by aaa to the dealership. The malfunction has the potential to result in a catastrophic outcome. Upon researching the issue online, I found there are several other BMW owners with the same issue; some have been unable to have the problem fixed. The BMW dealer was not yet able to determine the underlying problems and deny this is a known issue (although it is). They told me they have contacted BMW na and are waiting to hear back. I was told they did not have a loaner and they had done me a favor by putting my car ahead of others. They will not return my calls (only text messages) and cannot give me information about the problem or timeframe I will go without a car. I read others had similar issues and must have their car repurchased by BMW na. This seems to be a problem BMW is aware of. I do not know if I can ever feel safe in this SUV - there will always be the concern of the SUV running out of power on the freeway or in isolated areas.

50 Power Train problem of the 2016 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/07/2024

Hello, I took this vehicle in for a service at 100,000 miles. Part of that service was to change the transmission fluid. While the BMW dealership replaced the fluid, they found that the level was higher than it should have been. They voluntarily removed the transmission, and found that the electric drive buffer spring had been making extremely excessive contact with the transmission, so much so that the buffer spring had worn a hole in the transmission casing. Not a single code, or check engine light had illuminated saying there was anything wrong with any part of the transmission. The only reason this was found was because of regularly scheduled preventative maintenance. After discussing options with the BMW dealership, their recommendation was to put it back together as is, drive it to somewhere like carmax, and trade it in with the issue, since it was not showing any faults, codes, or errors with the transmission. The BMW dealership also stated this is not the first X5 edrive that they have seen with the exact same problem, so there is the start to a trend with this vehicle. The transmission could have failed even more catastrophically while driving at highway speed, with no indications that a long term problem was occurring within the transmission, as there is no sensor or error that is being monitored for this type of failure. Although the problem was found at 100,000, the BMW service has stated this issue must have been going on for a significant amount of time for the significant amount of damage. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. I am really shook up that my family was driving what I thought was a very safe vehicle with a ticking time bomb underneath it. Please please look into this. I am a helicopter pilot in the usaf, as well as mechanical engineer, and everything I know about vehicles and systems tells me this is a serious problem. 51 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/04/2024

While driving locally at a 20-25 mph speed my vehicle shuttered violently and a huge thunk was heard which sounded as if the engine had dropped out. I immediately pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle underneath and under hood but nothing was detected by me. Thankfully I was on a local street with grass side and not highway driving at greater speed and without location to safely park. No warning lights had flashed prior, and no warning lights came on when I restarted vehicle. I limped the vehicle a short distance to a auto repair shop for diagnosis. It was reported to me the front drive shaft had broken out and fallen down into the skid plate. It was given to me and I still have the shaft which is broken at the front fork with one fork missing. I had the 2013 BMW X5 taken to the local BMW dealer and was told this vehicle is not covered by the NHTSA recall 17v138000 for this model BMW due to my VIN being excluded. The vehicle is 12 years old but has only 114,000 miles. I cannot understand how such a major safety component failure for a maker and model can exclude certain VIN vehicles and that major safety component actuall fail in that excluded vehicle. At this point BMW is denying any responsibility for this issue. I feel as if I could have been killed, and possibly killed others, if this had happened in a higher speed and higher traffic situation.

52 Power Train problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Driving at approximately 60 mph, suddenly - a lot of vibration and an incredibly loud bang. We were able to continue driving. On investigation, confirmed that there had been a catastrophic failure of the front drive-shaft. On further investigation, this is a known issue with this make & model and there was a recall [xxx]: replace front driveshaft in 2017. This recall literature describes everything in the document as to what actually happened. I called BMW of westchester where I purchased car on [xxx] and left message, they did not return my call/message. I then proceed to call BMW USA (1-800-831-1117) on [xxx] and as to how come car had not been called and concern with potential gap in their system. They explained that this recall only applied to cars produced on April-22, 2013 and my car had been produced on [xxx]. Apparently, they changed the front driveshaft part. However - as you can see, this seems to be too much of a coincidence. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

53 Power Train problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/19/2024

While driving at average residential speed, heard a "chopper" like sound coming from the driver side wheel area. There was no indication in the vehicle for any issue (no check engine light or warnings). I pulled over and checked all tires for flat/low air, and all looked good. I drove less than a mile, and the sound got louder, and then I heard a thump. I pulled the car over and looked underneath, and the driveshaft broke and lodged out of the bottom guard. Looked at previous X5 models and it seems like there was a similar compliant resulting to a recall. The service technician informed me that these types of premature failures can be life-threatening as you can lose control of the vehicle (especially at highway speed), and even worse, the driveshaft can lodge at the footwell, ripping into the car.

54 Power Train problem of the 2018 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/14/2024

The contact owns a 2018 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at approximatly 75 mph, the vehicle lost power and slowed down to 15 mph. The vehicle was steered to the side of the road and restarted, but was not able to accelerate over 5 mph for a short period. The contact stated that the vehicle eventually accelerated over 35 mph. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed after 8 days that the throttle value needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was waiting to be diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,000.

56 Power Train problem of the 2010 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/07/2024

I own a 2010 BMW X5 xdrive30i (VIN: 5uxfe4c52al277208) with two active recalls: the vanos bolt recall (23v-707) and the pcv valve heater recall (22v-119). Despite these being federally mandated safety repairs, sharpe BMW in grand rapids, mi refused to perform the work without a paid diagnostic and potential full repair payment upfront, stating reimbursement would be decided afterward. I was sent home in an unsafe, recalled vehicle that visibly and audibly shakes at startup and frequently stalls. Other engine components have now failed due to the vanos issue and the vehicle is now inoperable. BMW na has acknowledged contact, but has only redirected me back to the same dealer without offering resolution. This has created financial hardship and an ongoing safety concern.

2nd time receiving a drivetrain and high voltage warning.

58 Power Train problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 01/11/2024

I own a 2011 BMW X5. The NHTSA shows 15 recalls for my vehicle type; however, NHTSA must be relying upon BMW for the VIN numbers 1. ) my vehicle doesn't show up for recalls; 2. ) I have never been contacted by BMW for many of those recalls - in fact, I have not received a letter from BMW in many many years, and among the 15 recalls above, I have never received any notification of for at least October 20, 2023 NHTSA campaign number: 23v707000 camshaft timing bolts may loosen causing stall loose or broken vanos unit bolts can result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash. April 18, 2018 NHTSA campaign number: 18v248000 electric auxiliary water pump failure October 30, 2017 NHTSA campaign number: 17v683000 pcv heater may short circuit March 2, 2017 NHTSA campaign number: 17v138000 front driveshaft universal joint may fail may 17, 2016 NHTSA campaign number: 16v311000 front driveshaft universal joint may fail. When I call BMW, they say there are no recalls outstanding on my vehicle and this NHTSA states there are recalls, but does not associate my VIN with the recalls, so say there are no recalls outstanding. The most prominent recent issue was that when my BMW dealership diagnosed a check engine light in my vehicle, they wanted to replace a scr def active tank for $3,000, but it turned out that BMW had an almost 100% failure rate for the same part and issued an extended warranty for this part under their technical bulletin si b01 23 16. They denied replacing the parts under the warranty stating that it was limited to 10 years/120,000 miles. I had only 101,600 miles on my car, but they stated the 10 year limited out the warranty from the in-service date. However, my car had many emission system related issues including just a few years previous.

60 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/16/2023

Drivetrain malfunction error that disabled the vehicle. Software update done by dealer, but dealer is unsure if that is the repair. Many other owners of the 50e are having issues. All are related to the high voltage battery system. Car will not operate when error occurs. BMW has refused to publish a TSB.

61 Power Train problem of the 2015 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/09/2023

The fuel pump catastrophically failed and caused the vehicle to suddenly break down (engine stall) while driving 65 mph on the freeway. There is metal in the system according to the mechanic. Numerous parts will need to be replaced and in essence the car no longer has value because of the number and severity of issues experienced. Mileage is 160,000. I see that two recalls have been put forth for similar issues for BMW X5’s produced around the same time as mine (campaign ids 21v586000 and 21v907000) but the recalls for some reason don’t cover my specific VIN. I think the recalls should also cover my VIN.

62 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/07/2023

The bell housing of the car is currently emitting a whistling / rusty tricycle sound at low rpms (1500-2200 rpms / 30 miles per hour or under). I have had the car in for service. During the last visit, BMW kept it for 30 days and only compared it to the sound of other cars. In being able to duplicate the sound, they stated that the sound is normal. BMW reached its conclusion without conducting any physical inspection of the bell housing and its related components to see why the parts are making the noise. They have no idea as to why the car is generating the noise. My shop foreman wrote the following to my advisor to share with ". . I narrowed down the noise. Noise is possibly mechanical and coming from bell housing area. Created tsara case and provided information to BMW and video to see what are the next steps we are going to be taking. I would like to remove the transmission and inspect toque converter and flywheel but need there authorization. " but again, because BMW was able to duplicate the noise in other cars, they will not authorize any work to determine the true nature of the sound. In doing so, they cannot, in my opinion, say whether this is a safety issue or not. Imagine traveling at a high speed on the freeway and the power train fails! my foreman remains committed to determining the root cause of the problem. As this is the first year with the hybrid engine, BMW should be required to determine the true nature of the sound and determine if it is a safety concern. A physical inspection of the components is a must!.

63 Power Train problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 11/17/2023

Transfer case actuators plastic gear(s) might be worn out due to bad quality of the material used. On some of the BMW X5 models there was a problem with the differentials and a recall was issued to fix those. But some how some cars with particular vins went missing in that. Codes thrown by my system are : 005219, 005f3a, 006ec4 code 005f3a signifies that the transfer case actuator is not engaging properly. This problem put me at risk when taking a u-turn as the gears did not engage properly and my car did not accelerate on time. The on coming traffic came very close and I somehow avoided a t-bone collison. My cars dashboard produces warning signs occasionally when the actuator does not engage. This is a big problem as the 4x4 system stops working and puts the car in rwd mode. In winters this could be dangerous to people driving as it happens without the driver's attention. I have attached reports from NHTSA for the same issue on other BMW models where a recall was issued. I request NHTSA to issue a recall on 2011 BMW X5 xdrive 35i as the same issue persists.

64 Power Train problem of the 2021 BMW X5

65 Power Train problem of the 2024 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/06/2023

We are 900 miles from home driving on the interstate, and received an error message saying that there was a drive train malfunction and we had to stop the car immediately. We were in the middle of nowhere, but able to pull over and turn the car off, and contacted roadside assistance. We were unable to start the car again. We were told there was a major malfunction of the drive train power supply and we could not operate the vehicle until it had been inspected at a service center 2 hours away. This vehicle is brand new with less than 2000 miles on it, and this is the second issue we have encountered with it. We had another sensor error pop up 3 days after purchase, and had to take this car into the dealership for 10 days. We have actually been driving this car for less than 2 weeks. This is completely unacceptable and dangerous. The car is unsafe to drive and we have no way of getting back to our home state. Roadside assistance has been unable to locate a tow truck to take us to the nearest town, and we are still sitting on the side of a dark road.

Vehicle stopped three times on highway. There is an issue with fuel injection. I am repairing the same thing every year and it is stopping every year on highway. They keep on repairing/replacing the module and I still get the problem. I missed a big rear collision because of this. This model has so many issues. Suspension broke. So many issues with gas pump. Being it a first generation hybrid, it can cause threat to so many people if we let these vehicles be on road.

As a result, the vehicle jolted into traffic and collided first with a bicyclist before continuing on to collide with the rear of another vehicle. A pedestrian later reported that they were also struck by the vehicle, but the contact stated that she was skeptical of the validity of their claim. The air bags did deploy. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The driver and passenger were both treated on scene by ems and later evaluated at an area hospital for injuries resulting from air bag deployment. The bicyclist and a pedestrian were both treated at an area hospital for unknown injuries. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and declared a total loss. 70 Power Train problem of the 2021 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/28/2023

While driving on highway/turnpike with cruise control on at 70 mph, drivetrain malfunction warning appeared and lost power. After turning off cruise control and playing around with buttons, could only get car to go about 35-40 mph, top speed with peddle to the floor. Very scary situation in traffic on busy highway. This happened twice about a month apart. First time, had to drive about 10+ miles in right lane with blinkers on to get to an exit. It was late at night and I didn't want to stop on my own. Once turned the car off and on a couple of time seemed to clear the error and I was able to drive city roads at minimal speed limit. Next day car was back to normal. Second time, drove about 2 miles to the exit with the blinkers on. This time when I restarted the car there was still not a lot of power. Drove for a bit but wasn't able to make it to speed limit of 45 mph. Made it home and turned car off again, next day it was okay. After restarting car a couple of times problem seems to go away. Took it to the dealer and all they did was "reset the system" which does not seem like anything is fixed. Will wait and see.
