2 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 1997 Buick Park Avenue

Failure Date: 10/01/2006

Repeatable, while driving my 1997 Buick Park Avenue, the abs and traction-off warning-lights suddenly come on together and stay on indicating loss of abs and traction control. Turning the ignition off and back on resets the functions, but they will become disabled again sometime later while driving. This could happen, possibly for the first time for someone, in an emergency just before one of these functions is called upon to avoid a severe accident. The failure occurs on smooth roads without regard to speed. I have not seen this happen when the car is stopped. The car may run for 200 miles without a problem, and then again the problem may occur within a few hundred feet from starting out.

3 Brake Electric Antilock problem of the 2000 Buick Park Avenue

Failure Date: 12/27/2004

The incident originally felt like possible warped brake disc (slight throbing in the brake pedal). Whithin two weeks it became a clicking noise in the front end even whithout the brake pedal pressed. Investigatio disclosed a buildup on the inside surface of the right front brake disc. This buildup was radial in nature; about . 375 inch width, about . 010 inch in height, with a length of brake pad width. Its appearance was similar to weld bead. The buildup was removed by hand burnishing. This removal disclosed a crack in the brake disc which ran along one edge of the buildup. My analysis of this problem is; the disc surface just ahead of the crack deflects inward when the brakes are applied, the trailing edge of the crack then acts as a scraper blade on the pad. The brakes do function throb and noise free since the burnishing, but I am sure that the buildup will reoccur.

This may or not be a problem. Road conditions were damp after a night of rain,no standing water on turnpike. Traveling at 65 mph using cruise control on straight part of road. Auto suddenly went into a rear end slide which continued from left to right slides . After about 150 yards I disengaged the abs system and regained control of the car. Question. Could this be a malfunction of the abs /cruise control system causing loss of control of the auto?.
