1 Parking Brake problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

1. I parked my wife's van at the neighbor's house because guests were about to arrive. Their driveway is on a slight incline so I engaged the emergency brake. 2. It occurred just once with the pedal going completely to the floor. 3. After contacting gm and being denied compensation due to no recall and the age of the vehicle I purchased and replaced the broken driver side emergency brake cable myself. I believe the cause was a design flaw. I have the old part if needed for examination. The cable was completely severed due to a crack in the outer sheath allowing moisture to enter and to deteriorate the cable. The crack occurred at a severe bend where a bracket secured the cable to the frame of the vehicle.

3 Parking Brake problem of the 1996 Chevrolet Astro

Failure Date: 09/20/1997

When stopping the truck it takes about 1 minute for the brake pedal to go down, and usually it goes all the way down to the floorboard of the truck and loses all of the braking power. Consumer states that ever since the power assist brakes were changed from vacuum to a hydraulic booster, the emergency brake is difficult to operate and weak, the vehicle can not be shifted to park until the engine is started and the rolling speed is sufficiently slow, and when stopped on a grede with the motor off, the foot operated brakes will fail.
