Throttle cable sticking due to outer layer of braided cable being frayed. Routing of cable caused a kink in the outer jacket that frayed the outer layer of a braided cable from the gas peddle to the throttle body. This caused the throttle to open and remain at what ever point it was by the pushing the accelerator pedal causing uncontrollable acceleration. The cable was routed below a hose at the firewall pushing the outer jacket downward and was that way from the factory as far as I am aware. No hoses have been changed. Replaced the throttle cable and routed it above the hose at the firewall to eliminate the downward pressure on the outer jacket and all is operating properly. Dealer had no interest in fixing or investigating the problem without cost being incurred by me. Made the repair myself with a new throttle cable obtained through a dealer parts department.

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Astro van. While driving 30 to 35 mph, the vehicle began accelerating on its own. The vehicle would not slow down by applying the brakes which forced the contact to shift gears into neutral and then into third gear. Within a few minutes, the contact was able to slow down the vehicle engaging the brake pedal and shut the engine off. The contact was informed to engage the accelerator pedal to loosen the throttle; however, when he restarted the vehicle the rpm's increased rapidly. The police helped the contact push the vehicle onto the emergency lane. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that the rapid acceleration was due to a frayed accelerator cable. The dealer replaced the accelerator cable and adjusted the idle and throttle plate. The vehicle is driving normally. The contact requested the parts from the dealer who stated that they were not longer available. The contact is concerned about the safety risk since a crash could have occurred. The failure mileage was 172,777.

Uncontrolled engine acceleration: without warning, the engine revved to full throttle. The car continued to accelerate even with foot off gas pedal and full brakes applied. The cause was identified as a broken accelerator cable. The breakage occurred near the gas pedal. The car had 48,000 miles. The gas pedal had been "jerky" intermittently on initial depression for the preceding year. Dealership servicing attributed this to a dirty throttle body, which was cleaned and "deferred. " but 6 weeks later, this break in the accelerator cable occurred.

Family and I were on hwy 441 traveling at 60 mph. I braked and went down to 50 mph as I began to make an exit off of this hwy. I let off brake and car sped up to 60 mph and the cruise control was never on. I was on exit ramp going 60. I was forced to put transmission into neutral. I coasted to a place off the roadwhile engine was "reving at high rpm's". I snapped the gas pedal and engine went faster. I reached down to pull on gas pedal and throttle cable broke. Vehicle was towed to a gm dealer the next morning. Their diagnosis was a dirty throttle body and stuck throttle cable. Never heard of an excessively dirty throttle body causing this type of problem, especially to a 3 yr. Old vehicle with 50,000 miles.
