14 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While attempting to start the vehicle, it failed to start. The contact stated that the vehicle eventually started up after waiting for a while. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the fuel pump, battery, and starter were changed; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the starter was replaced again; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
While driving at 65 mph the engine cut out. Could be the crankshaft position sensor. The truck is a 2500 with an 8. 1l engine. Similar issues that the 2001 was recalled for. Same engine and cps as the 2001 but not included in the original recall. This has happened several times at various speeds.
While driving at 65 on the freeway truck began to lose power and when I stepped on gas it didnt respond. Had to keep letting foot off and back on to get it to go. Pulled over to the shoulder turned truck off and it ran good for about 3 minutes and it repeated itself. When engine gets hot the truck loses power and you have to shut it off and repeat this step until you get to where you gotta go. No codes, no warning no nothing. Truck also shuts off while driving. Replaced fuel pump, filter, cleaned maf and throttle body replaced crank shaft sensor and it still does this.
The engine will die at any time with out warning. This happens fairly often. Sometimes after trying to restart it will restart with no delay and other times it will take a few minutes. Then it will run normally for no specific amount of time. Then it will die again. Incidences may occur hundreds of miles in between. The dealer says they don't know why it would do this and it would be very difficult to diagnose the problem because it happens spontaneously and it usually restarts quickly. This is very dangerous and turning the vehicle to get off the road when the engine dies is very hard to do.
Engine died at 55 mph, restarted right away, died out again in the middle of an intersection about three miles away. Nearly caused an accident. This time it took about 10 minutes before it would start. I found there is a recall on the 2001 Avalanche, why not the 2002?.
02 Avalanche 2500, engine just stops running while driving. Speed doesn't make a difference. It just dies and I have no power brakes,no power steering. The has been getting worse and is very dangerous to myself and others in traffic around me. It may take up 5 minutes to restart now. 2 chevy dealers say they can't find any problem codes and I can't afford to pay for unneeded parts for trial and error repair. Please help get this problem dealt with. I know there are other owners of the same model, year of this vehicle have same problem. It has been know about for some time that the 2002 Avalanche 2500 8. 1 liter engine has this problem. It is also known that replacing the crankshaft position sensor will cure it. This should be a safety recall item by gm before someone gets killed in traffic!!!.
Vehicle won't start, engine dies while driving.
Truck shuts off while driving. When this happens I lose power steering and brakes. Will occur at all speeds including 70 mph on the interstate. Very scarey situation that could cause a large accident in rush hour. After researching this on the internet, I have found this is a problem with the make and model truck I have. The problem is the crankshaft position sensor. This should be recalled and fixed at Chevrolet's expense!.
This complaint involves the crankshaft position sensor failure on my 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche while on the highway. Cause was later diagnosed to be sensor by maita Chevrolet in elk grove CA. I found out that it was a widespread issue on the chevyavalanchefanclub. Com website.
My 2002 chevy Avalanche 2500 has the problem of the engine dying as I am driving down the road at freeway speeds and any other speed for that matter. When the problem occurs, I loose power steering and braking ability.
I have not given permission to the dealership service department to start repairs. They told me it was the rear axle or rear end that was damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. I was quoted a repair cost of $2,400 for a used part and $3,000 for a new part. This truck has around 42,000 miles and was purchased June 1, 2003. I have had multiple problems ranging from replacement of cd's to a door window motor problem. I inquired/complained about a noise in the rear end at around 25,000 miles prior to the breakdown. However, they could not find the problem. The tailgate would fall open when locked occasionally, but this was adjusted after taking it back for repair. I have also replaced one hub assembly on the front of the truck at a cost of $250. 00. There is an oil usage problem that requires an additional quart to be added between changes. I personally think that this truck is a lemon and needs to be researched to discern if it has had some previous mechanical problems. Although it was purchased new there is a possibility that it could have had some malfunctions before it was delivered. I misplaced my receipts, and I'm not sure that the service department will give me another copy. However, I will search for them as verification that I took the truck in on several occasions for various and sundry complaints.
2002 chevy Avalanche, 5. 3l engine seized up on me as I was driving and could have caused an accident as I lost power. I'm not getting any satisfaction from gm or the dealer as to why this happened. I just want a new engine. Can you help?.

2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 2500 has a miss in the engine at highway speeds that cannot be fixed at the dealership. Chevrolet says it is "engine fade and a stiff suspension". It is a power train problem, perhaps in the transmission. It is noticeable with or without cruise control on and pronounced when climbing hills or towing any load. The dealer (larry green Chevrolet in blythe CA and Chevrolet)both have open files on the problem. Another vehicle from the same dealer was repurchased by Chevrolet and the replacement vehicle has the same problem. All vehicles are within 100 VIN 's of each other.
