Table 1 shows three common latches/locks/linkage related problems of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche.

| Hatchback/liftgate Lock problems |
I have experienced two separate incidences where upon acceleration the tailgate has dropped causing it to fall extremely hard on the rear bumper. One of the times we were on the freeway with heavy traffic causing us to immediately pull to the side of the road so our luggage did not fall out onto the road which would have caused an accident.
Retaining hook attached to underside of hood is rusting apart from the hood panel. Chunks of rusted metal are falling off of the area around the hood retaining hook. Vehicle is still under rust warranty but general motors will not honor rust through warranty. Severe rust began when vehicle was approx 2 years old. Partial or complete separation of this retaining hook could cause hood to fly open at speed. Many members of the chevy Avalanche fan club have the same issue, but it is more noticeable on a vehicle with white paint.
While having all supplies for police firearms training lock in the back of my 2004 Avalanche the tailgate would not unlock, dealer need to replace unit, same thing happened the very next day at the range. Returned to dealer and this time I was told they were using bad springs.
