34 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

Vehicle looses power and brakes go out then dies, doesn't matter speed. If slowing down and press the brakes, the locks, lights, and security goes crazy. This is dangerous as it is in intersections and caution for collision. The vehicle has to be off for a time frame and restarts fine and can go. Happened when coming from ramp and in middle of road with semi truck coming down by us.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

While driving or in park the tachometer sticks as does the speedometer. This has lasted from minutes to days. The vehicle appears to run properly, however, I am very leery of my safety and the safety of my children when they are in control of the vehicle.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2015

The vehicle's abs and brake lights are on. I took the vehicle in for repair and a state inspection. The part to repair the abs and brake light are on national back order with no definite availability date. The truck is not usable because of the failed state inspection.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2015

While driving all my cluster gauges froze. . . I was parked and it still said I was going 40mph. . . How is this not a recall? no clue how fast I was going, nor how much fuel I had. . . We should be reimbursed something.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2014

I was issued a recall a few years back specific to my vehicle about a blower motor operation malfunction. It stated that settings on the blower motor may not function properly. For example, when I turn on the air or heat I have settings for 5 blower motor options. All the settings 1-4 work just fine, setting 5 does not work at all. When I set hvac to setting 5 no air blows out. I have since then misplaced that recall notice. If you have any information on this recall can you please get in contact with me thank you.

6 Electrical System problem

Oil pressure and water temperture gauge's pegged out to the high side and will not return to normal.

7 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2012

Speedometer readout stuck at 40mph while vehicle parked. If driven continues up from there and sticks. Next day speedometer resolved itself and rpm gauge is stuck on 6 when it should be reading 2-3, its' been stuck for two months still.

8 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

The transfer case buttons only light up occasionally but it might be the neutral button that lights up or sometimes the two-wheel drive button. The oil pressure gauge is pegged on the right side of the guage. Yesterday my radio quit working does not even light up.

9 Electrical System problem

Can u fix it 4 me. . . . . Thank you. . . Mark palmer.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2011

Speedometer not working at all reads over 120 mph even when turned off. All windows get stuck when trying to close them.

11 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2011

Instrument gauge cluster on 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The speed odometer does not work correctly it goes wherever it wants while driving, the voltage gauge stays on 9. The tachometer does not work right.

12 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2011

Was driving my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 down the road, when I noticed that my speedometer was acting funny. Was moving ir-ratically in upward increments of one mile per hour, while sticking and jumping on each increment. Then, it just flat quit! not knowing the mechanics of my vehicles speedometer (ie; speedo cable, electronic, or what have you), went online to search this out. Found out that there are many, many of this incident happening with consumers. Seems that gm refuses to recall this, even though it seems to be a very common problem?? have read that this can cost upwards of $600 to repair? just bought this truck/avalanche (used) from a dealer in portland, oregon. Can I get any help with getting this repaired? from my understanding of what I have read (online), there are several "step motors". These step motors are apparently a poor (design) product, and are the same for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, etc. Also read that because they are all built by the same manufacturer, that (eventually) they will all fail? it is my contention that gm is fully aware of this, from the information obtained (online). I am hoping that this will be repaired for me, free of charge, thru gm?? how do I know how fast I am going? what if I get a ticket? what if my other instruments fail?.

13 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

Upon start up of the truck, the abs light stayed illuminated and started chiming at me. Everytime I start the truck this happens. I had my brakes inspected and they were fine. I currently do not have abs. I took the truck to a mechanic this last week and had it looked into. It is a known problem with the chevy Avalanche and they informed me that there is a part for this problem but it is on indefinite backorder. What and how does that happen? the abs system is throwing fault codes stopping it from working properly but there is not a part to replace it. Per chevy!.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated the speedometer and rpm gauges have stopped working. The contact stated he should be able to see how fast he is driving and does not feel safe driving the vehicle. The failure was diagnosed and the contact stated the instrument cluster needs to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle identification number was not available. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 130,600.

15 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2010

Windshield wiper will not cut off. Left side of dash blows hot air while the right side blows cold air when air conditioner is on.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2010

I own an 04 Chevrolet Avalanche and the tbc2 fuse always blows. So I have no dash lights to show me my speed or anything. I have read up on this and lots of these trucks have the same problem with wires rubbing and shorting out. As well as the service air bag light comes on as well which I think is another thing with wires being in a bad spot and shorting out.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/24/2008

While driving approximately 50 mph my speedometer began to read 120 mph. I consider it a driving hazard (safety) when driving on the highway and in traffic. Very distracting. When I investigated on-line I discovered that this is a well documented defect. The cost for repair is over $400 and should not be bourn by the consumer for a known defect.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

Speedometer has become erratic at zero to 120 mph at any given time or any where inbetween truck running or setting still. Will be traveling down the road at flow of traffic and speedometer will be zero to 120. This is very dangerous. GMC or federal government needs to issue a recall. This is a problem common to GMC chevy products silverado truck, impalas, and Avalanche vehicles 2003 to 2005.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2008

Speedometer not working. Speedometer readings from 100km per hour to 200+ kms per hour. Speedometer never returns to zero.

20 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/22/2008

2004 chevy Avalanche 1500 2wd spedometer became erratic and stoped working. The problem was first noticed with the tachometer acting erratic, it stopped actin funny and then the speedometer began acting crazy and then stuck.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Was driving at a rate I thought was around 65-70 mph but got pulled over for going 84 mph. I explained to the officer I was only going about 68 mph. He then showed me the radar gun and it said 84mph. When I went back to my truck I noticed my gauge was stuck on 18mph I showed the officer and luckily he told me ha had the same problem with his chevy truck and let me off with just a warning. To make things worse all gauges don't work now. I've read some messages online and some people said they got letters to rapair this problem. I've been the only owner of this truck since may 2004 and never received anything about this problem. I believe gm should repair the problem because it's a big safety issue. Please help. Thank you.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

Speedometer failure in chevy Avalanche. It is a common problem and is widely discussed on the internet, yet no recall. 2004 chevy Avalanche z71.

23 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2007

Oil gauge began to show low pressure then no pressure. Carried to dealer, they replaced oil sensor on engine. Problem still occurs but only after vehicle has been driven for a couple of hours straight. Now the pressure gauge pegs to the right. However, once the vehicle has been turned off for the night, it performs correctly and I have been unable to get it to demo for dealer as it only does it on long trips which occur on weekends and night.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2007

I have had problems with my dash cluster it pins itself at high speed and the amp gauge and temp gauges stop working too I had this problem just after buying it and it had 125000kms on it and chevy said it was over the kms too be covered to me their should not be a time frame or mileage set too have them replaced . . . Please let me know if their is anything that can be done . . . Thanks.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2006

Here's about my disappointment with my 2004 Avalanche which I purchased on July 28, 2004 with 137 miles on the odometer. I purchased the value guard gm protection plan. Of course, the vehicle was great for the first 37,990 miles. My first problem came on 10/31/06, only 2 years 3 months after purchase date. My tailgate handle broke while opening it handle replacement was $568. To my surprise and apparently also to the representative from the dealership the existing spoiler had to be torn off and replaced with a new one to access the handle. That was an additional $186 plus labor. I question the designers of the tailgate assembly. Why would anyone design parts that would have to be destroyed in order to service another part? in fact, why would any part that would normally be used frequently by a regular trucker break so easily? of course, neither the warranty nor the gm protection plan covered this. The next problem occurred on 12/27/06 at 41,901 miles, my windshield wipers wouldn't shutoff. Into the dealership we went and $334 later a wiper board was replaced. No warranty again covered this problem. I no sooner got home and had to return on 12/28/06 at 41,944 miles. Now my dashboard light service 4 wheel drive was on. This time I was told the transfer case encoder shorted out and $779 later it was fixed. I might have used the 4-wheel drive 8-10 times at the most. At that time, I'd owned this vehicle for 29 months, that's pretty sad!! today with the latest episode, I tried to lower my front passenger side window and it wouldn't work. The other 3 windows work fine. I waited and tried again later still no luck. I hear a clicking sound but no action. This probably means another visit to the dealer.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2006

Speedometer failure, dealer will not replace part even though is clearly a factory problem issue as well as a safety issue.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2006

Driving down the interstate my speedometer suddenly quits and says I am driving 120 mph (even while parked). This is a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche with only 28,000 miles on it gm needs to recall this because of the frequency this is happening with Avalanche owners.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/07/2006

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy Avalanche does not work properly. When I am going 25 mph it indicated 80 mph. Sometimes when I am stopped the speedometer indicates 30 mph. Basically the speedo works sometimes, but I cannot rely on it to drive safely-at any speed, because I do not know what speed I am actually going.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2006

Speedometer malfuntions it sticks and or drops to 0 while driving.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2006

My 2004 Avalanche started making knocking sounds when turning corners - took it to the dealer and $700 later and a new steering yoke the knock was squelched (not gone) and the speedometer coincidentally started moving like a second-hand on a watch (jerky) - took it to the dealer and they want $525 for a new cluster that they say is not common - looking on the web, I found this to be a very common problem with Avalanches and the waiting list can be in the hundreds before me - if this is so common, why isn't there a recall and why does the dealer deny the number of occurrences?.

31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2006

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that the speedometer failed to work at all speeds. The failure has occurred a couple of times. He felt that it was a safety issue that could lead to traffic tickets and a crash. The current and failure mileages were 50,800.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2005

: the contact stated while driving at 60 mph the vehicle lost power without warning causing the speed to decrease to 30 mph. The sudden loss of power occurred ten times, but the vehicle was taken to the dealer on six occasions for inspection of the problem. The dealership replaced the throttle body twice, but the problem persists. Updated 2/7/2006 -.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/24/2004

New 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche purchased 08/14/04. On 09/24/04, vehicle stopped on freeway. Towed to dealership purchased from, winter Chevrolet in pittsburgh, CA. Kept for 11 days without information given verbally or in the mail. Continue to have problems. Truck again stopped on freeway on 12/27/04. Re-started after turning off and waiting a couple minutes. Taking back in tomorrow. Sales department will not return call regarding trade or return of down. Simply patch up the new vehicle and send me out again awaiting next problem.

34 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2004

The electricity from the automatic control monitor that controls the air conditioning and temperature control on the roof of the truck was causing the consumer to experience severe headaches and she was no longer able to drive the vehicle with the heat or air on. She had to pull the fuse that controlled the monitor because turning it off the wave of electricity was still flowing. The gauss meter that checked the wave of electricity was flashing red when she held it up to her head. It was not suppose to be like that. The symptoms were: her scalp was real tender and swollen, her left side of shoulder and neck was hurting a lot, and she had to use contacts in her left eye because of vision problems. All of these symptoms were from the automatic control monitor she has never had any of these symptoms prior to this. Since she unplugged the fuse these symptoms disappeared, and she felt better. Her concern was that other people driving this vehicle may never be able to figure out what caused these problems and she felt that this was a severe health risk.
