1 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2013

I did an internet search to see what causes a speedometer to go out and to my surprise there are many people who have had their speedometer to go out on this model vehicle. Most people experienced this problem around 30,000 miles. It would benefit consumers if this problem were addressed by the manufacturer.

2 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/14/2012

In may 2012 I bought a used 2004 chevy Avalanche 1500. About two months later, I noticed issues with my speedometer. I first noticed it on a small trip where I was traveling about an hour or so, then all of a sudden, the speedometer dropped to zero. I pulled over for a minute to see what might be wrong, and it seemed that after the truck was shut off for a bit (need to cool down??), it started working ok again. This has happened several times since then, not usually on short runs, but more when the truck has been running for a while. Another issue with the speedometer was when I was hauling a small utility trailer, and going up a hill, it did it again. Someone told me to check out recalls and I found this site where I see that many, many others are experiencing the same, or very similar issues. If there are so many with these same types of issues, why isn't the manufacturer doing anything about it, or at least investigating it? I am military, and I cannot afford any type of motor vehicle violation on my military record, nor can I afford a speeding ticket. . . Just like everyone else. My permanent address is tyrone, PA, but I am stationed at ft. Benning, GA where I bought the truck. Since I live in barracks, I've listed my permanent home residence in PA. Phone contact number is good, and any mailings should go to the address provided below.

The speedometer will quit working correctly, after driving for a little bit the speedometer needle will get jerky and then start dropping down to zero while maintain the same speed on the vehicle. This is a serious issue as you don't really know how fast you are going any more and all the other dash instruments seem to be working fine and the odometer seem to keep working correctly too. I was checking on line about this issue and found that many other are having this issue too and felt this should be a safety recall to fix their issue.

My 2004 chevy Avalanche z66's speedometer malfunctions constantly while I am driving by displaying that I am going over 120 miles per hour when its only just been backed up and out of a parking spot. Then when I drive, I have no idea how fast I am actually going due to this defective speedometer by chevy still displaying that I am going over 120mph. Even after it is parked and sits for awhile, and is turned off, it still reads over 120 miles per hour.

14 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2009

I have a 2004 Avalanche and it has been working great for the last 4 years. Recently within the last 6 months my speedometer had been twitching and sticking on a certain number. After a few weeks of that. It finally got stuck on 15 mph. I called gm and they stated that they know it is a problem, and they have allowed for a special circumstance replacement for 7 years or 70,000 miles. I am over the miles, but believe that if gm has identified a problem they should cover the repair especially when it is a safety concern. On top of that, I never received a letter informing of such special circumstance.

21 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2009

The speedometer on my 2004 Avalanche (cluster) is failing. It reads 120 mph when it is idling and shows the same when im doing 60-65 mph. I bought the car used (with 25,000) and currently it has 108,000. This is ridiculous! its a common problem thought the state, why isn't it being replaced free !.

22 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

Failure has occurred twice on my 2004 Avalanche surrounding the inefficiencies within my dash board. The speedometer was reading incorrectly. It was very dangerous as the accurate speed was not reporting. I was able to get this replaced at about 40,000 miles. Recently, the gas gauge is not working correctly. After filling up the tank and taking a road trip the gas gauge immediately reported an empty gas reading. The gas gauge continues to read incorrectly and fluctuates. I have contacted the company to find out that there is a service warranty on the vehicle up to about 70,000 miles. Currently my truck is at 86000 miles all due to highway traffic to work (30 miles each way). I do not feel that I should expense this cost since this is clearly a factory issue. Regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle if it is a known defect it should be covered. This is very dangerous as I could run out of gas on the road. This is also very disappointing as this depicts the quality of the vehicle. My father has bought nothing but Chevrolet's over the years and states how efficient the vehicles are. In addition I have already replaced the entire dash board once from the first incident surrounding the speedometer to have received another defective dash board surrounding the gas gauge.

23 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2008

The instrument panel on my vehicle is displaying the incorrect information for fuel level and oil level. This is occurring at startup and continues while I drive the vehicle and is a constant problem. Nothing has yet been done to correct the problem but feel that the manufacturer should assume financial responsibility of correcting the malfunction.

24 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2008

The speedometer in my 2004 chevy Avalanche starting sticking - and now reads any were from 45 - 65 when I am at a stop and over 120 at times, very sporadic operation of speedometer can not determine true speed of travel.

25 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle has not been taken to an authorized dealer for a diagnostic. The contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 39,800 and current mileage is 40,000. Updated 3/3/09 updated 03/04/09.

26 Instrument Panel problem

Instrument cluster on my 2004 chevy Avalanche has stopped working. The failure occurred while driving down the road.

27 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2008

My 2004 Avalanche speedometer and tachometer read completely inaccurate. Example=shows me going 120mph and 3000m rpm with motor off. I bought the vehicle used from a chevy dealer and was told it had warranty remaining. When the problem began last year I was told it was not warranted. I lacked the money for the replacement and have been driving it broken. Now I am finding out through other Avalanche owners that it has been being fixed by dealers at no charge as there have been so many problems. I feel this should be a recall. I know my vehicle now has 110,000 miles, but I can document by law enforcement notes on a ticket I received last year that I had the problem about 30,000 miles ago. I feel this should be repaired at no expense to me. They told me when I called that their parts dept had a long waiting list for the replacement panel so you know ?Chevrolet knew they had a widespread problem. Thank you. I hope to hear back from you. Also at about the same time my abs/brake light started coming on after I drive a few miles. I don't know if it is as common of a problem or related to the instrument panel problem or not.

28 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/23/2008

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The speedometer began going out at 60,000 miles, and now the gas gauge and tachometer occasionally fail. I have 123,000 miles on my vehicle. The local dealer, ryan Chevrolet, informed me that gm would have fixed it prior to 72,000 miles. I found this out after 85,000 miles.

29 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2008

The speedometer had stopped working on my 04 Avalanche. Not realizing this and traveling at night with no traffic I had gotten pulled over for speeding. Once I had stopped and noticed the gage was stuck at 60mph I showed it to the officer and he let me go. I realize there is a recall out for this if the vehicle has less than 70k miles but I am over that because of the amount of driving I do for my job. This could be a serious problem and should be covered for a longer period of time, or all clusters should be changed because they will fail at one point.

30 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2008

Speedometer has been acting erratically.

31 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. My speedometer cluster recently stopped working all together. I have called the Chevrolet place and they are saying it will be very expensive to fix. Then one told me that there was a recall on this. But it was for 7 years or 70 thousand miles. I just bought the truck and it was over the mileage when I purchased the vehicle. What can I do to get this fixed, with out breaking my bank. ??? please help me out on this. . . . . .

32 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2007

The speedometer on my 04 chevy Avalanche stopped working. It is pegged out at 120 mph.

33 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2007

My 2004 chevy Avalanche's speedometer has been sticking on 65 for a week now. Today it completely went out and stays on 0 mph now. I have no idea what I am going to do now other than not drive it until I can afford to repair it. Every bit of research I have done on this matter shows that thousands of other people are having the same problem. I baby my truck and take excellent care of it. It has 66,000 miles on it.

34 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2007

1 speedometer became erratic and now there is no movement of the speedometer at all. Unable to determine speed. Dealer informed me this has occurred often on 2003-2004 gm trucks and SUV's.

35 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2007

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving 45 mph, the speed control stopped working. The speedometer needle was not registering any speed. The contact attempted to receive assistance from Chevrolet, but was unsuccessful. Chevrolet stated that they were not responsible due to the mileage on the vehicle. The current mileage was 76,104 and failure mileage was 72,000.
